What can drones do? Their many uses include taking pictures from the sky, watching wild animals and sending packages of goods. Now these small flying robots are leading a big change in farming.
With cameras and some data-collecting devices, drones provide us with an eye in the sky. Here are a few of the farming jobs drones can do.
Looking for sick crops
Drones can scan crops using different kinds of light. In this way, they carefully examine the fields and produce detailed pictures that can help us find sickly yellow plants within fields of green. Drones can also check for bacteria that are harmful to crops in the air from a few kilometers away, so that farmers can try to find ways to protect their crops before the bacteria get to them.
Water watch
Most fields aren't perfectly flat. There might be hills, slopes and holes. After watering, some places may dry out faster. Some spots might not get water at all. Drones can scan the field and make a 3-D map. Using the map, farmers can find out which parts of a field are dry or need improvement. This can make sure every crop can get enough water to stay healthy.
Spraying pesticide(喷洒农药)
Different parts of a field might have different heights. Drones can check for this when flying above the land. Then, they change their height and therefore spray the correct amount of pesticide over each part of the field. This way works much better than traditional pesticide spraying. Drones can finish spraying a field up to five times faster than with traditional machinery, according to a study. This can stop insects from damaging the crops in a shorter time.
26. How many farming jobs done by drones are introduced in the passage?
A. 3 B. 4 C. 5 D. 6
27. Which of the following use of drones is NOT mentioned in the passage?
28. What advantage of drones is mainly discussed in this passage?

When she was 14 years old, Amy’s life was turned upside down by a family trouble.
Amy lived in a small village in India. Her mother fell ill and her father had to spend his time caring for her. As a result, she had to do most of the housework—including washing clothes. What’s worse, her family couldn’t afford an electric washing machine. Instead, she had to do the washing all by hand in the local river, and then carefully carry everything back to her home—a task that took several hours.
Interested in engineering, Amy wanted to make a washing machine which could be used without electricity. She started studying electric washers to learn how they worked. Amy then designed a machine with bicycle pedals(踏板) and chain. To get those, she went to a local shop. Workers there not only gave her the parts, they also helped her make the machine!
Here’s how the machine works: Amy used a cylinder(圆筒) to hold the clothes and put it in a cube(立方体). Next, she connected the bicycle pedals and the chain to the cylinder. As Amy pushed the pedals with her legs, the cylinder cleaned the clothes just like a regular washing machine.
Amy’s invention worked! She had created her own human-powered washing machine—and now a task that used to take several hours took only 30 minutes. Amy’s washing machine was chosen as India’s best invention! And the story of this young woman’s creative invention spread around the world.
“Amy’s invention saves time and money for the world’s poor,” said Jeanine Thomas of the Borden Project, “she made a difference.”
29. What problem did Amy try to solve?
A. Her mother suffered from illness.
B. Her family was too poor to afford her education.
C. It was a long way to get water from the river.
D. It took too much time and effort to wash clothes.
30. How did Amy solve the problem?
A. designing→studying→getting materials→making the machine
B. designing→getting materials→studying→making the machine
C. studying→getting materials→designing→making the machine
D. studying→designing→getting materials→making the machine
31. How does the machine get powered?
A. By turning the cylinder around with hands. B. By pulling the chain with machines.
C. By pushing the pedals with legs. D. By turning on the machine with electricity.
32. What does the underlined phrase “made a difference” mean here?
A. Amy changed the way a washing machine works.
B. Amy won a big prize and improved her family's life.
C. Amy improved many poor people’s lives with her creativity.
D. Amy encouraged many young inventors among the poor.

Doing sports is good for our body and mind. Today, exercising through online videos is becoming popular. With the Internet, people can do it anytime, anywhere.
One of my friends, Lin Fei, followed short videos to do daily exercise. “With live programs, I feel like I am working out with my friends, which encourages me to hold on to the last minute,” she said. Another friend of mine, Michael, told me that working out through videos made him feel comfortable. “I have a fear of working out at the gym, because I don’t like being watched by people around me. But working out at home doesn’t make me feel embarrassed,” he said.
Hearing about their experiences, I decided to give it a try. When I told my plan to my elder sister, a P.E. teacher, she said that workout videos could be helpful but might still carry some problems.
“Without being with someone in person, you will be less willing to work out to your best. Working out at the gym allows you to have advice in real time and get pushed harder,” my sister said to me. “Well, if you really want to have a try, first, choose proper programs or videos. That’s very important. And then ask your friends for advice. Their experiences can give you a better understanding of what you can expect. Anyway, don’t depend too much on it. You should try some different ways too.”
At her suggestions, I followed an online program for three months, which also offered advice to meet my personal needs. After the first period of training, I felt it very practical and helpful when I put in the right amount of work with a strong will. Compared with going to the gym, using online videos is a much cheaper and time-saving choice. But it can be difficult sometimes when I’m too lazy or too busy to stick with it.
33. What do the writer’s friends think of working out through online videos?
A. Lin Fei likes it but Michael doesn’t. B. Both Lin Fei and Michael like it.
C. Michael likes it while Lin Fei doesn’t. D. Neither Lin Fei nor Michael likes it.
34. What is the writer’s sister’s idea about following workout videos?
A. It may fail to push you to your best.
B. It can offer you advice when you exercise.
C. It provides you with different ways of exercise.
D. It shows proper and helpful programs.
35. What advice on working out through online videos will the writer probably give?
A. The more you exercise, the more advice you will get.
B. Following online videos is simply enough.
C. Don’t give up especially when you feel lazy.
D. Don’t go to the gym as it wastes money and time.
36. What is the main idea of this passage?
A. Working out through online videos is necessary and popular.
B. Working out through online videos is convenient but not helpful.
C. Working out through online videos requires a strong will and action.
D. Working out through online videos has advantages and problems.

Long long ago, there was a piece of wood. It was not an expensive piece of wood. Just a common block of firewood, one of those thick legs that are put on the fire to make cold rooms warm.
One fine day this piece of wood found itself in the shop of an old carpenter(木匠). Everyone called him Mastro Cherry, for the tip of his nose was so round and red that it looked like a ripe cherry.
As soon as he saw that piece of wood, Mastro Cherry was filled with joy. Rubbing his hands together happily, he said to himself, “This has come in time. I’m in need of a leg of the table.” But as he was about to give it the first blow, he stood still with arm uplifted, for he had heard a little voice say, “Please be careful! Do not hit me so hard!” Surprising, isn’t it?
He tried to find out where that voice had come from and he saw no one! He looked under the bench—no one! He searched the room—no one! He opened the door to look around the street—and still no one!
“Oh, I see!” he then said, laughing and shaking his head. “There may be something wrong with my ears.”
“Well, well—to work once more.” He struck another blow hard on the piece of wood.
“Oh, oh! You hurt me!” cried the same far-away little voice.
Mastro Cherry’s mouth opened wide, eyes turned frightened and his tongue hung down on his chin(下巴). “Where did that voice come from? This piece of wood has learned to cry like a child? Here it is—a piece of common firewood, the same as any other. Yet—might someone be hidden in it? If so, the worst for him. I’ll fix him!” With these words, he started to knock it. He threw it to the floor, against the walls, and even up to the ceiling.
He listened for the tiny voice to cry. He waited two minutes—nothing; five minutes—nothing; ten minutes—nothing. “Oh, I see,” he said, trying bravely to laugh and touching his hair. “Well, well—to work once more!” So he tried to sing a merry song to get power, and worked on.
“Stop it! Oh, stop it! You tickle my stomach.” This time poor Mastro Cherry fell as if shot. When he opened his eyes, he found himself sitting on the floor.
37. How many times did the piece of wood talk?

Paying for bus rides with plastic usually makes people think of plastic bus cards. But one Indonesian city has decided to accept recyclable plastic waste in place of money for city buses.
Surabaya, Indonesia’s second largest city, made this decision in April, 2018. 41 A two-hour bus ride costs 10 plastic cups or 5 bottles.
Indonesia is the second largest ocean plastic polluter, producing up to 2.4 million tons of plastic waste into the oceans every year. 42 That’s why the city made this decision. It hopes to raise public awareness about environment, especially about plastic waste.
Each city bus can collect up to 550 pounds of plastic bottles and cups every day. The collected bottles are sold to recycling companies, and the money made from it goes towards running the bus companies and providing money for green space in the city. 43
The decision is part of the city’s purpose—to become plastic waste-free by 2020. 44 The new buses are air-conditioned, comfortable and easy for elderly and disabled passengers to get on and off.
The programme is well received. People in Surabaya said, “ 45 It is a win-win situation.” This type of programme can be a model for other cities worldwide and encourage citizens to recycle their plastic waste.
A. This is certainly turning rubbish into a national treasure. B. In Surabaya only, nearly 400 tons of plastic waste is produced every day. C. We can reduce waste, so it doesn’t pile up at home because we can make good use of it D. In order to encourage local people to take buses, the city also added the new Suroboyo buses. E. Now, locals can pay for their bus rides by putting plastic cups or bottles directly on the bus. |

It is even more wonderful if you wear some traditional clothes like hanfu and try to behave like them, which helps you understand their life better.
To meet modern Guangzhou, I strongly recommend you to take a trip by riding a shared bicycle along the Pearl River. Touring with a bike, you can enjoy not only the natural beauty along the river, but also some famous landmarks around Zhujiang New Town.
