    Unit 3 Sports and FitnessReading and ThinkingGrade level: Senior high school (Grade 10) Objectives:To develop reading skills such as scanning, skimming, and understanding the main ideas of a text.To develop critical thinking skills by analyzing and evaluating the ideas presented in the text.To improve students ability to express their opinions in English. Materials:The reading text: "Why We Should Exercise," from Unit 3 of the textbook.Handout with comprehension questions and discussion prompts.Writing materials. Warm-up:Start the class by asking the students what sports or physical activities they enjoy doing, and how often they do them.Then, ask them what they think the benefits of exercising are, and what they know about the risks of a sedentary lifestyle. Presentation:Give the students the reading text, "Why We Should Exercise," and ask them to read it quickly to get a general idea of what it is about.Ask the students to read the text again more carefully and underline the main ideas in each paragraph.Give the students the comprehension questions and ask them to answer them individually or in pairs.Review the answers as a class and provide feedback.Divide the students into small groups and ask them to discuss the following questions:a. Do you agree with the author that exercise is important? Why or why not?b. What are some of the benefits of exercising that you have personally experienced?c. Do you think people in your community exercise enough? Why or why not?Ask each group to share their answers with the class and encourage the students to ask each other questions and engage in a discussion. Practice:Ask the students to write a short paragraph about their own exercise habits, including how often they exercise and what types of activities they enjoy.Ask the students to write another paragraph discussing the benefits they have personally experienced from exercising.Review the paragraphs as a class and provide feedback on grammar, vocabulary, and coherence. Assessment:Monitor the students' participation in the group discussion and provide feedback on their ability to express their opinions and engage in a conversation in English.Evaluate the students' writing paragraphs based on grammar, vocabulary, coherence, and content. Homework:Ask the students to write a short essay about the importance of exercise in their daily lives, using the reading text and their own experiences as evidence.Encourage the students to use appropriate vocabulary, grammar, and organization in their essays. Exercises:Vocabulary Exercise: Have the students match the sports and fitness-related vocabulary words with their definitions. This exercise will help students to better understand the text and expand their vocabulary. Reading Comprehension Exercise: Create a set of comprehension questions related to the text, "Why We Should Exercise," and ask the students to answer them after reading the text. This exercise will help students to improve their reading skills and test their understanding of the text. Discussion Exercise: Divide the students into pairs or small groups and ask them to discuss the benefits of exercise, how often they exercise, and what types of activities they enjoy doing. This exercise will help students to practice their speaking and listening skills and engage in a conversation in English. Writing Exercise: Ask the students to write a short paragraph about their exercise habits, including how often they exercise and what types of activities they enjoy. Then, ask them to write another paragraph discussing the benefits they have personally experienced from exercising. This exercise will help students to practice their writing skills and express their opinions in English. Debate Exercise: Divide the students into two groups and assign each group a different topic related to sports and fitness. For example, one group could argue that team sports are better for physical and mental health, while the other group could argue that individual sports are better. This exercise will help students to practice their critical thinking and argumentation skills while also engaging in a fun debate.
