Life fell int a regular pattern. Staying alive tk all ur time and energy. Fr example, we needed water, and Elephant Island had nne. We fund that we culd melt ice frm the cean and drink the water frm it. But hw culd we make fire?
There were n trees grwing n Antarctica and n il, s the nly fuel we culd use was animal fat. This gave ff ily, black smke, but it stayed burning even in strng winds. Fd was als a prblem, as we did nt find any vegetables r fruit n the island.
One f ur grup members, Linel Greenstreet, nted in his diary abut hw bred he was with the meals: “The fd nw is pretty well all meat f sea creatures.” If it weren’t fr sea animals, we wuld all starve. As a chef, it was my duty t ck, s I tried t vary the meals in whatever way I culd. But it was difficult.
We had t be careful nt t g utside t ften, as the changing temperatures culd make us ill. It was almst as dangerus t becme t ht frm wearing t many clthes as t becme t cld frm wearing t few.
The sweat culd freeze very quickly. Many f us als became ill frm the black smke f the animal fat we burnt fr ur fires. It damaged ur eyes and burnt ur lungs.

1 This is a cntinuatin f the stry f Shackletn’s men wh were left n Elephant island. In pairs, predict what happened t the crew members. Then the memir belw t see if yur predictins were crrect.
The Reward fr PerseveranceWe watched as Shackletn and the bat sailed away frm Elephant Island. It was easy t imagine the danger ahead f them. Wuld they ever return t find us? What might happen t them? What if they were delayed? We felt s alne and desperate. But it was nt fr lng. There was nthing like a gd dinner and sme music t cheer us up.
1 What did the men eat and drink n the island? 2 What were the dangers f living n the island? 3 Hw did the men stay in gd spirits while waiting t be rescued? 4 What d yu think were the key reasns fr their survival? 5 If yu were ne f the men n Elephant island, wuld yu have trusted Shackletn? Why r why nt?
I wuld have trusted Shackletn as he was a man f hnur and wuld d all he pssibly culd t save us.
The men ate the meat f sea creatures and drank water frm melted ice.
The dangers f living n the island were the changing temperatures, lack f fd and water, and the black smke frm burning animal fat.
The men stayed in gd spirits by being disciplined and staying psitive. They celebrated birthdays, festivals, and every time when they caught a sea animal.
I think the key reasns fr their survival were their discipline and psitive mental attitude,as well as the reliability f Shackletn.
2. Read the text again and answer the fllwing questins.
3. Based n the diary entries and the memir yu have read, write an essay abut the stry f Shacktetn and his men n the ship Endurance.
Read the stry again and think abut the fllwing questins. Make ntes with yur answers.
·Hw des the authr describe Shackletn and his crew members?·What kind f relatinship did Shackletn have with his crew?·What struggles did they face?·What were the mtives fr their actins?·What did yu like mst abut the stry?

This stry is abut the 1914— 1916 expeditin by Ernest Shackletn t make the first land crssing f Antarctica. Fr this task he used the ship,Endurance, with a 28-man crew, including ne stwaway. Shackletn is described as calm and brave and takes his crew’s safety very seriusly. The rest f the crew are als brave, thugh a few are nt very psitive, and all were at times under-standably wrried and desperate abut their situatin. Overall thugh, they remained psitive. This was helped by the gd relatinship Shackletn had with his crew wh trusted him and knew he wuld d his best t save them. The crew faced great trubles nce Endurance gt stuck in the ice. Sn they had t abandn the ship and camp n the ice. They had t face the extreme weather and cld as well as a dangerus envirnment and all with limited supplies. All f this added t the mental challenge,s they had t maintain a psitive state f mind. Shackletn’s mtive was always t make sure his crew survived, and theirs was t last until he had fund help. What I like mst abut this stry is that althugh their expeditin failed in achieving its gal,it was nt the disaster it culd have been. This was due t Shackletn’s perseverance in getting help and the crew’s bravery in surviving fr s lng. My impressin f them is very psitive as they must have struggled greatly in such a psitin f adversity. I felt very happy when I learnt that the whle crew survived.
