They could even see fish swimming in it. They felt very excited. One of them suggested swimming in the river. Lin Tao thought for a while and said to his friends, “No. We can’t swim in the river. Ladies and gentlemen, I returned to this year in a time machine. In the year 2500, we are able to travel through time to any year in the history of the earth. This year is your last chance to change your lifestyle to save the earth.
Beginning in the middle of the 20th century, a few people were worried about polluting the earth’s water and air, but most people did not change their way of life. Instead, they continued to pour dangerous chemicals and other waste into lakes and seas, to drive more and more cars and trucks, and to cut down trees.
By the year 2200, the earth’s water was completely polluted. People could no longer drink water, and they had to use other types of liquids. Scientists said that in the future there might be too many people on the earth. But not enough was done. So, by the year 2300, there were so many people that food became scarce. There was no water to grow food and all of the fish in the lakes and seas died because of pollution. Terrible wars broke out between the rich and the poor. Scientists were working very hard to find another planet in space where humans could live.
By the year 2400, the air was too polluted for humans to breathe. So we had to leave the earth. But only the rich were able to leave. Where did we go? Nowhere. You see scientists did not find another safe planet, so now we must travel around the universe in our space ships. We are still looking for a place to call our home. So, it is up to you to change history. There is still hope. You must change your lifestyle now, before it is too late.

When Marion Sheppard began to go blind in her 40s, she cried, screamed, and felt sorry for herself. The doctor said she would never regain her vision (视力). It would only get worse, “This isn’t fair,” Sheppard said over and over again.
Since she was a little girl, Sheppard had always been a dance lover. But now she was so scared that she would never leave her apartment. She was afraid that, unable to see a stranger, she would be hurt on the streets. But mostly, she worried about the way she would appear to the world. She continually wondered, “What if people look at me differently and treat me differently?”
But after several months of sadness and fear, Sheppard started to tell herself, “You don’t understand yet, but you’ve got to keep moving.”
As hard as it was, Sheppard forced herself to go out. She pushed herself to attend various social events. As a single mother of one daughter, Sheppard continued her library job at The New York Times until her vision further got worse in her 50s. She kept moving, and she kept dancing, following her passion.
Sheppard was 61 when she attended a summer camp for the blind in 2008, where she taught her first dancing class. After that, she asked a Manhattan community center if she could teach there, but was refused because it would be too dangerous for the students. At last, she made the managers believe that she could teach very well as a volunteer.
Right up until the COVID-19 closed things down, Sheppard was teaching over a dozen people to move to the music. But Sheppard taught her beloved students on far more than dance steps. With confidence-building words and encouragement, she also gave them dignity (自尊) and independence.
In Sheppard’s classes, each student would dance in the center of the group, making moves as the others cheer them on. As Sheppard says, “We may be blind, but we’re doing our thing.”

A.The danger on the streets. B.Losing the self-care ability.
C.The way people treated her. D.Being unable to dance anymore.

A.In her 40s. B.In her 50s. C.When she was 61. D.In 2008.
32.Why did the community center refuse Sheppard’s request?
A.It needed a lot of space. B.It was Sheppard’s first class.
C.It required volunteers in class. D.It might cause danger to students.
33.Which of the following is correct about Sheppard’s classes?
A.They are only for the blind. B.They are cheaper than other classes.
C.They are filled with lots of training. D.They are good for people’s mental (精神的) health.
34.What can we learn from Sheppard?
A.Willpower can fight off illness. B.Dancing makes people happier.
C.Dreams break down difficulties. D.Good attitudes light up our lives.

How quickly can you count from one to ten? Do you use ten different words to do it? Can you do it in English, or do you have to use your first language? Do you count on your fingers? Many people think that numbers and math are the same all over the world. But scientists have discovered that it is not true.
People in different parts of the world use different ways to count on their fingers. In the United States, people begin counting with their first finger. They then extend the rest of their fingers and finally the thumb to count to five. Then they repeat this with the other hand to get to ten. In China, people count by using different finger positions. In this way, a Chinese person can easily count to ten on only one hand.
Besides ways of finger counting, scientists have found that cultures and languages are also different when it comes to numbers. Some languages have only a few words for numbers, and others have no words for numbers. For example, the aboriginal people in Australia don’t have hand movements to stand for numbers. They don’t even have words for numbers. However, they are still able to understand different ideas about numbers. Similarly, people of the Piraha tribe in northwestern Brazil don’t have words for numbers such as “one” or “three”. They are not able to say “five trees” or “ten trees” but can say “some trees”, “more trees” or “many trees”.
Professor Edward Gibson from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology said that most people believe that everyone knows how to count, “But here is a group that does not count. They could learn, but it’s not useful in their culture, so they’ve never picked it up.”
35.Why does the writer list the four questions at the beginning of the passage?
A.To make a survey. B.To interest the readers.
C.To give examples. D.To interview the readers.
36.According to Paragraph 2, what is the difference between the US and China in finger counting?
A.People from China use finger positions to do counting.
B.People from the US usually begin counting with their thumb.
C.People from China count much faster than people from the US.
D.People from the US use only one hand to count from one to ten.
37.People of the Piraha tribe are from ________.
A.the US B.Brazil C.Australia D.Asia
38.Which of the following is TRUE about aboriginal Australians?
A.There are ideas of numbers in their life. B.There is no “some trees” in their language.
C.They have only a few words for numbers. D.They have hand movements for numbers.
39.What’s the main idea of the passage?

【参考范文】
Chinese culture is a traditional thing with Chinese characteristics. It includes a lot of things we’re proud of. Now let me introduce Chinese food culture. Meals in China are different in some ways from meals in the West. In China, lunch is usually served around 12 o’clock. As for dinner, Chinese people eat it much earlier than people in the West. Chopsticks are used to eat most food. So it is important for us to learn how to use chopsticks. Generally, for dinner, there’ll be lots of different dishes, not just three courses. Besides, Chinese people like to talk about food, so it’s a good topic during a meal. From these cultures, I learned that Chinese culture is not only long, but also develops over time. We should protect and pass on Chinese culture. As students, we can join different traditional culture clubs so that we can understand and protect Chinese culture. Welcome to China and taste our Chinese food. I believe you will like it.
