The Top 4 Lies Girls Hear

    1.        “You’ll never be good at math.”

It’s generally accepted that boys are good at math while girls aren’t. The fact is that it isn’t true---at least, it doesn’t have to be. When girls reach their teens, most of them lose their interest in math. They’re trying to be regarded as female (女性). They want to stay away from things that are boy things, and math is still considered a boy thing. Math class is hard, but if you gave it a chance you could be great at math, especially because you are a girl.

    1.        “Being skinny is good, and how you diet is your business.”

Lots of web sites tell visitors that losing interest in eating is a beautiful thing. These  “skinny is better” sites are lying. Losing interest in eating is a disease, not a fashion statement. It can kill you.

    1.        “You don’t deserve (应得,值得) to make as much money as a guy.”

It’s said that women who work full-time earn about 23 percent less than guys earn. Once you see real women succeeding in cool jobs, you’ll truly get that you’re worth just as much as---or more than any guys.

    1.        “Caffeine (咖啡因) will help you study better.”

Caffeinated soft drinks have long been advertised as must-haves when you have to work very hard. But if you want to do your body a big favor, you’d better give up caffeine altogether.

    1.        Why do girls lose their interest in math?
      1.               Because they don’t realize the importance of math.
      2.               Because math class is too hard for girls.
      3.               Because they aren’t interested in the things which are considered boy things.
      4.               Because girls are not as clever as boys.
    2.        The word “skinny” means         .

    A. pretty B. strong C. tall D. thin

    1.        Which of the statement is NOT true?

      2.               Being skinny is good for girls’ health.
      3.               Girls can earn as much money as boys do.
      4.               Caffeine can make people feel more excited.

    B

After a busy day of work and play, the body needs to rest. Sleep is necessary for good health. During this time, the body recovers from the activities of the previous (以前的) day. The rest that you get while sleeping makes it possible for your body to prepare itself for the next day.

There are four levels of sleep, each being a little deeper than the one before. As you sleep, your body relaxes little by little. Your heart beats more slowly, and your brain slows down. After you reach the fourth level, your body moves back and forth from one level of sleep to the other.

Although your mind slows down, from time to time you will dream. Scientists who study sleep say that when you are dreaming, your eyeballs begin to move more quickly (Although your eyelids are closed). This stage of sleep is called REM, which stands for rapid eye movement.

If you have trouble falling asleep, some people suggest breathing very deeply. Other people believe that drinking warm milk will help make you drowsy. There is also an old suggestion the counting sheep will put you to sleep!

He dreamed of arriving at the party and skating into the room while playing the violin. He was sure that everyone would be very surprised.

On the night of the party, Merlin rolled into the room, playing his violin. Everyone was really surprised to see him. There was just one problem. Merlin had no way to stop his roller skating. Have you ever wondered why birds sing? Maybe you thought that they were just happy.

After all, you probably sing when you are happy.

Some scientists believe that birds do sing some of the time just because they are happy.  However, they sing most of the time for a very different reason. Their singing is actually a warning to other birds to stay out of their territory.

Do you know what a “territory” is? A territory is an area that an animal, usually the male, claims ( ) as its own. Only he and his family are welcome there. No other families of the same species are welcome. Your yard and house are your territory where only your family and friends are welcome. If a stranger should enter your territory and threaten you, you might shout. Probably this would be enough to frighten him away.

If so, you have actually scared the stranger away without having to fight him. A bird does the same thing. But he expects an outsider almost any time, especially at nesting (筑巢) season. So he is screaming all the time, whether he can see an outsider or not. This screaming is what we call a bird’s song, and it is usually enough to keep an outsider away.

Birds sing loudest in spring when they are trying to attract a mate and warn others not to enter the territory of theirs.

You can see that birds have a language of their own. Most of it has to do with attracting mates and setting up territories.

    1.        Some scientists believe that most of the time bird’s singing is actually          .

    A. an expression of happiness B. a way of warning

    C. an expression of anger D. a way of greeting

    1.        What does the underlined word “territory” mean?
      1.               A place where families of other species are not accepted.
      2.               A place where a bird may shout at the top of its voice.
      3.               An area for which birds fight against each other.
      4.               An area which a bird considers to be its own.
    2.        Why do birds keep on singing at nesting season?
      1.               Because they want to invite more friends.
      2.               Because their singing helps frighten outsiders away.
      3.               Because they want to find outsiders around.
      4.               Because they want to express their happiness.

The food we eat seems to have great effects on our health. Although science has made big steps in making food more fit to eat, it has, at the same time, made many foods unfit to eat Some research has shown that 80 percent of all human illness are connected with diet and 40 percent of cancer is connected with the diet as well. Hey, mom, I want you to stop dropping me off at the airport for some trip that I am about to take and start becoming my seatmate. I want to travel with you----just you.

I want to explore a new place with a woman who raised me, who put up with my teenager anxiety and my rebellious (叛逆的) college years. I want to see my favorite cities with the lady who taught me basic life lessons, such as looking both ways before crossing the street, how to use a glue gun, and that the most important thing in the world is to help others.

I always appreciated the vacations you planned for our family. I also remember how you watched me as I read The Great Gatsby on the balcony at midday. I wonder if you felt proud of me. These days, I am sick of traveling to places with wishy-washy(无主见的) friends. I want to travel with a strong woman who can see how capable I am of learning to speak French or hiking on a glacier or eating something as unpleasant-smelling fruit.

Now I want you to see how much I grow up while abroad---I’m a different person, Mom. And I know you’d be different too. I know that someone has shared a similar burst of emotion while diving into Australia’s Great Barrier Reef for the first time.

So what do you say, Mom? Will you throw responsibility to the wind? I want to travel with you. Let’s just go---we can go anywhere in the world, just you and I. You can pick the place, and I will do the rest.

    Love,

    Katka

How nice are you? Do you give money to homeless people? Do you offer your seat to someone in need on a bus?

Many people believe that confident people think more highly of themselves, while those who have low self-esteem(自尊)think less of their qualities. However, a new study says it might not be true, the Guardian reported.

The study was done by Jonathan Freeman, a psychologist professor from the University of London, UK. He found that 98 percent of British people consider themselves to be among the nicest 50 percent of the population.

In the study, Freeman first asked some people to rate(估价)their own niceness. Then he got people to answer questions like "Do you give directions to strangers?" and "Have you donated blood?" The results showed that people are not as nice as they think they are. Two thirds of them seldom helped others carry shopping bags, and only a quarter of them donated blood.

In another study by psychologists from universities from Chicago and Virginia, the US 50me people were shown pictures of themselves. Some pictures had been slightly(轻微地) changed to make them appear more attractive. When asked to pick the unchanged pictures people usually chose the more attractive ones.

So why do we think we are nicer than we actually are? There are many theories (理论). A popular one says we unconsciously deceive(无意识地欺骗)ourselves, so that we can get confidence without knowingly lying to ourselves or each other

How can we solve it? Other studies show that there is a simple way: feedback(反馈) Compare others' opinion toward you with your own and you will see a clearer picture.

    63. What did the new study find?

    A. Confident people have more good qualities.

    B. People with low self-esteem are mostly not nice.

    C. People are not as nice as they think they are.

Deserts are found where there is little rainfall or where rain for a whole year falls in only a few weeks’ time. Ten inches of rain may be enough for many plants to survive (存活) if the rain is spread throughout the year, If it falls within one or two months and the rest of the year is dry, those plants may die and a desert may form.

Sand begins as tiny pieces of rock that get smaller and smaller as wind and weather wear them down. Sand dunes (沙丘) are formed as winds move the sand across the desert. Bit by bit, the dunes grow over the years, always moving with the winds and changing the shape. Most of them are only a few feet tall, but they can grow to be several hundred feet high.

There is, however, much more to a desert than sand. In the deserts of the southwestern United States, cliffs (悬崖) and deep valleys were formed from thick mud that once lay beneath (在……之下) a sea more than millions of years ago. Over the centuries, the water dried up.

Wind, sand, rain, heat and cold all wore away at the remaining rocks. The faces of the desert mountains are always changing---very, very slowly---as these forces of nature continue to work on the rock.

Most deserts have a surprising variety of life. There are plants, animals and insects that have adapted (适应) to life in the desert. During the heat of the day a visitor may see very few signs of living things, but as the air begins to cool in the evening, the desert comes to life. As the sun begins to rise again in the sky, the desert once again becomes quiet and lonely.

    54. Many plants may survive in deserts when_______.

    A. there is no rainfall throughout the year

    B. life exists (存在) in rough (恶劣的) conditions

    C. all sand dunes are a few feet high

    D. rocks are worn away only by wind and heat

    D

We often find that weekends and holidays feel so short while classes and work feel so long. Actually, though, we know that this is not true. But we still wonder where that strange feeling comes from.

In fact, this is one of the ways that we’re tricked by time, according to the website. All that is interesting. The website lists several wrong impressions ( 印象 ) we often have about time. Let’s have a look.

First of all, emotions affect (影响) our time-keeping abilities. Negative emotions (消极情绪), especially anxiety and boredom, make time seem longer because they make us concentrate (集中) more on the passage of time. However, when we are enjoying ourselves, we pay more attention to what we are doing and are likely to lose track of (失去对……的意识) time.

Here is another example. In 2007, a group of scientists carried out a test. In the test, people fell 50 meters into a safety net and were then asked about their experience. Although the experience took shorter than 3 seconds, the people thought it was much longer than it actually was.

This is because of the way our bodies reply to danger, according to the scientists. Our bodies produce a chemical called adrenaline (肾上腺素) when we are faced with danger. It allows us to concentrate better so that we can stay alive. As a result, we are able to remember far more details ( ) over a short period of time, which makes it seem like time is going more slowly.

Another situation when we make mistakes about time is when we take afternoon naps (午觉 ). Have you ever had trouble telling what time it is after a long nap? That’s because the best amount of time for a nap is 20 minutes. After 20 minutes, you enter a new stage of sleep called slow-wave sleep. If you wake up mid-way in this stage, it will take a while before you can correctly perceive (感知) time again.

Yes, time can be mysterious (神秘的) and there is no way to control it. So, perhaps the best thing to do is to make good use of every minute.

    58. According to the passage, what possibly makes people feel so long?

    A. Weekends and holidays.     B. Weekends and work.

    C. Classes and work.      D. Holidays and work.

    59. According to the passage, what will NOT happen when we are faced with danger?

    A. Our bodies will produce a chemical called adrenaline.

    B. We are able to feel that time seems to go more slowly.

    C. Adrenaline will make us concentrate better to stay alive.
