One day, a heavy spring rain made the river rise. Tom decided it was time to make his move. So he got a large stick and used it to push the outhouse. Finally it fell into the river. That night, his dad told him that they were going to the woods after dinner. Usually, this meant Tom would get a spanking(打屁股). Tom asked why. The dad answered, “Someone pushed the outhouse into the river today. It was you, wasn’t it?” Tom answered yes.

I took a breath. “And then they asked what had happened.” I stopped and wondered if my brother could hear me. One of his fingers moved a little. “Yes,” I said. “I told them what had happened.”

Have you had a pet? Did it get sick or even die? How did you feel about it? Now let me share my story.
My family has always been poor, but we are a close family. We love our pets above anything else. Last December, things got even worse for our family because of the terrible snow. We went from just being poor to being homeless and finally, we lost everything except for our two German shepherds(德国牧羊犬).
lt was a cold winter, but luckily we found an old house where our two beautiful dogs could live with us.
Unluckily all of our money was gone and our dog food was running out.
We called all over the town, trying to find someone to help. But nobody would give a hand. I was afraid that our dogs would die because they didn’t eat anything for three days. I called one last place in town—a small pet food shop.
There, a young girl answered the phone. I told her about what we were going through. Then, this sweet girl told me that she would get the dog food for us for free.
Hearing this, I started crying. My fears went away. I knew that our dogs would have food, all because this young girl paid for it out of her own pocket. She didn’t know me, but she would help my dogs.
This young girl, whose name I don’t even know, will always be an angel(天使) to me, and an angel to my dogs as well.

①“Without music, life would be a mistake, ” famous German philosopher(哲学家)Friendrich Nietzsche said over a century ago. Music is a big part of our lives. But in recent years, some US schools have cut music classes to control budgets(预算).
②For example, Chicago public schools hurt arts education when it fired(解雇)over 1, 000 teachers. Among them, 10 percent of the teachers taught art or music, according to The Washington Times. In fact, this is not just a problem in the US. In other countries, such as China and the UK, music classes are not thought to be as important as ones like science, math and history. That’s partly because music is not seen as a very important life skill, and it isn’t tested. Many students are busy with schoolwork, so parents and students choose to focus on subjects that are tested more often.
③However, learning music is beneficial(有益的) in many ways.
④When playing music, you need different abilities to work together. It is not as simple as it looks, according to Kenneth Guilmartin of Music Together, an early childhood music development program. For example, when playing the piano, people see music notes and decode(解码)them in their brains. They also use their fingers to make sounds. You need to deal with all these things at the same time.

One sunny day, Snowy jumped up on the window sill(窗台). Snowy wanted to go out and play with the pretty butterflies, but the window was shut and the old lady had fallen asleep in her rocking chair.
He ran to the door but that was shut, too. He sat down near the old lady's feet and said, "Miaow?" That was his way of saying, "May I go out to play, please?" The old lady didn't hear him but stayed fast asleep.
He rubbed his soft head against the old lady's legs. Still the old lady slept. So Snowy sat down and thought hard. Then he had an idea. He would jump up on the piano and play a tune. That might wake her up. So Snowy jumped up onto the piano and was a little scared of the loud, big, deep drum sound he made as he landed.
He took another little step. It wasn't quite such a loud note(调子). Up and down the notes he walked until he reached the very high notes which sounded like lots of bells. But still the old lady slept. Snowy kept dancing about on them and made quite a pretty tune. At last the old lady woke up.

What are you holding in your hand while you are taking the examination? Right. A pen. Though it is small, the pen has changed the history, improved the trade of countries9 recorded events, and done far more work for human beings than all other tools.
Progress without it would have been almost impossible. The creation of the wheels 9 the introduction of steam engine(蒸汽机),the use of electricity, all these have changed the lives of millions of people, but the pen has done more. It has taken away mountains9 and it has prepared the way for all progress and development of the society.
In the past the pen did all the work if you wanted to keep any writing for some time. The lawyers(律师)took up their pens and wrote the law of the country from the days when papyrus(纸莎草纸)was first used. The most famous letters in the world were written with a pen. It was with a pen that the greatest thinkers of all time wrote down their thoughts.
The pen is very utilitarian. We cannot sign a bill or write a letter or buy a house without our pen. An agreement is worthless till our name is written with a pen. The writers encourage the world with it. The students take their examinations with it as well.
Our coming into the world is recorded with a pen. Before we have been at school, our name is written on the name list with a pen. We cannot be married till we have signed. A pen records the important events in our life.
