The Girl No One Talked to
Last year there was a girl at our school who hardly anyone talked to.I think it was because she seldom showered,so she kind of smelled bad.Her name was Cindy Lindburg.I didn’t know exactly where she lived, but it must have been somewhere in the neighborhood because we always got on the school bus at the same bus stop.
Cindy Lindburg didn’t have many friends. She always came to the lunch room alone and left alone. On the bus,no one offered her a seat, and she never asked because she was sort of a shy person. She seemed like a nice girl—who had an odor(臭味) problem.
One day,I was walking up to the bus stop and I saw Carl Littleton making fun of her.I couldn’t hear what he was saying, but I saw the way he was laughing and rolling his eyes in his typical poking-fun-at-you way.I also saw how sad it made Cindy.Clutching her notebook to her chest like a shield, she stared at the ground and moved as far away from him as possible without leaving the bus stop entirely. As soon as I got close enough,I glared at Carl to make him stop laughing, even though I knew he probably wouldn’t.He didn’t.So I walked over and stood closer to Cindy so she wouldn’t feel so bad.It was just one of those times when you knew someone needed someone to be a friend.
I didn’t think she’d say anything, but she did.Her eyes peeked up from staring at the ground as though she thought I’d be embarrassed if anyone heard she spoke to me,and she whispered,“Hi.”
“Hi,” I said. Then as loudly as I could,I said,“Don’t pay any attention to Carl. His parents have been unsuccessful in teaching him some manners.” Seeing she had company,Carl left.
The comment didn’t even rouse a smile out of Cindy.____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
She looked up,studying my face to check if I was making fun of her. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Section C Using Language & Assessing Your Progress
Ⅰ.1.associated 2.are 3.with 4.cutting 5.on 6.to chew 7.calories 8.categories 9.had told 10.of
Ⅱ.1.regardless of 2.arguing over 3.cut down 4.high in
5.popular with 6.In addition 7.rather than 8.quantities of
Ⅲ.1.Regardless of what happened yesterday 2.play a trick on him 3.How/What about going to 4.that you can do this job
故填as。
require...to do...“需要……做……”,此处是被动语态be required to do...。
故填are removed。
根据前面的more junk food和more salt可知,这里要填连词than。
分析句子结构可知,“ enough fat and salt in your meals”在句中作主语,所以此处应该用动词-ing形式。
Ⅴ.Dear Jack,
I’m glad that your family like Chinese cuisine.
Chinese cuisine is one of the most popular diets, but it can be high in oil and salt. What’s more, main dish portions are often quite large,so you’d better order fewer dishes when you have dinner with your family in Chinese canteens. And then divide the dishes and eat up!
Choose dishes with lots of vegetables. You should try to avoid the dishes which have high calories, such as lamb kebabs and red braised pork belly.Ask the chef to use less oil,cut down on salt and cut out MSG.
Have a good appetite.
Yours,
Li Hua
Ⅵ. The comment didn’t even rouse a smile out of Cindy. Her face was overcast with sadness. With watery eyes, she began to sob.I gave her a hug to comfort her.“Why does everyone hate me?” she asked. Her question took me by surprise.Speechless as I was,I was wondering how to tell her the truth in a more appropriate way.“I think you’re smart and you dress OK,but...”.I stammered. She stared at me,waiting for my answer anxiously. Finally,I summoned my courage and told her it’s because she didn’t smell good.
She looked up,studying my face to check if I was making fun of her.Making sure I was serious, she lowered her head.Since she seemed to take this well,I suggested that she should take more baths if she wanted to make friends with the classmates. She looked up at me again with an embarrassed expression.I shrugged and added,“It’s just a thought.” Cindy took a deep breath and thanked me.I felt quite relieved.Cindy did take more baths from that day on.And it wasn’t too long before she started to make friends at school.I made a difference for the better in Cindy’s life.
