If you have lived in New York City for many years, like I have, the skyline becomes part of you and your daily life.
When I was invited to visit the recently completed Summit One Vanderbilt,New York’s fourth-highest tower,I wasn’t expecting much.I felt like I’d seen it all and I thought that this observation deck(观测台)would be another space for a view of the city, but nothing else.
Let me tell you something:I have never seen one like this before. It sits on top of a building on 42nd street and Vanderbilt, right next to Grand Central Station.Once you have ascended to the top floor, you step into air, which makes you feel like being at 1,000 feet above ground level with its mirrored floors.Once you make your way throughout the space, you feel like New York is part of a body, and your sense of space is challenged by the reflections of the light. The reflections create endless possibilities for photos and videos, and the light changes throughout the day.I took out my camera and began to take photos, feeling a connection with the city that no other observatory has been able to give me.
Summit is something unique,an artwork with architecture. It will be an observatory that will change with the city.I personally can’t wait to take photos at sunset,or when winter arrives.
4.How did the author feel when invited to visit Summit One Vanderbilt?
    A.Curious. B.Happy.

In the South Atlantic Ocean, there is an island called Tristan da Cunha, which is a six-day boat ride from the nearest town Cape Town in South Africa. There’s no airport on Tristan.Every month or so,a boat will bring visitors but not many. The boat will also bring mail and supplies. You can only see about 270 people,300 cows,500 sheep, and a whole lot of penguins there.
The British tried to build a military base there in 1816.They gave up after a year. But a soldier and his family talked a few people into staying. Those people slowly built a community.Few trees grow on the island. So they found wood that washed ashore. They used it to build homes and boats. For food, they raised cows, sheep and pigs. They fished and planted potatoes. They promised to share everything they had.Sometimes ships brought supplies to Tristan. But for many years,no one there used money.Instead, people on the island traded potatoes for supplies. It cost five potatoes to send a piece of mail.
Today, nearly everyone on Tristan is a farmer. The island’s main industry is fishing. It has a single factory that cans fish.
Several times, bad luck has nearly destroyed the town on Tristan. In 1885,men died in a boat accident. That left 13 women and only 4 adult men on the island.Still, everyone stayed. In 1961,a bigger disaster struck. The town was destroyed by a volcanic eruption. All 290 people on the island moved to England. But soon, nearly all of them moved back to the island and rebuilt their town.
What’s so special about life on this lonely island? For islanders like Harold Green, that’s an easy question to answer.Green has lived on Tristan his whole life.He left when the volcano erupted. But England was too loud and too crowded for him.He came back because the island is peaceful.
12.What was used as money on Tristan in the past?
    A.Fish. B.Wood.
    C.Sheep. D.Potatoes.
13.What made all the people on the island move to England in 1961?
    A.A deadly boat accident.
    B.A terrible natural disaster.
    C.The attraction of modern life.
D.The building of a British military base.

    A.Bored. B.Hopeful.
    C.Satisfied. D.Regretful.
15.What does the text mainly introduce?
    A.A lonely island.
    B.A special lifestyle.

My husband and I just spent a week in Paris. 16 So the first thing we did was rent a fantastically expensive sixth-floor apartment the size of a cupboard. It was so tiny that we had to leave our suitcases in the hallway.
The place wasn’t entirely authentic, though.Unlike a normal Parisian apartment, the plumbing(水管)worked. 17 Our building even had a tiny lift with a female voice that said,“Ouverture des portes,” in perfect French. That is the only French phrase I mastered, and it’s a shame I don’t have much use for it.
Parisians are different from you and me.They never look lazy or untidy. As someone noted in this paper a couple of weeks ago, they eat great food and never gain weight. 18 French strawberries do not taste like cardboard.Instead, they explode in your mouth like little flavor bombs.
19 On our first morning in Paris,I went around the corner to the food market to pick up some groceries.I bought a handful of perfectly ripe small strawberries and a little sweet melon. My husband and I agreed they were the best fruit we had ever eaten. But they cost $18!
In France, quality of life is much more important than efficiency(效率).You can tell this by café life.French cafés are always crowded. 20 When do these people work? The French take their 35-hour workweek seriously—so seriously that some labor unions recently struck a deal with a group of companies limiting the number of hours that independent contractors can be on call.
A.Not all the customers are tourists.
B.The quality of life in France is equally excellent.
C.There was a nice kitchen and a comfortable bed.
D.The amazing food is mainly consumed by local farmers.
E.That’s not the only reason the French eat less than we do.
F.Our aim was to see if we could live,in some way, like real Parisians.
G.The food is so delicious that you don’t need much of it to make you happy.

It was Christmas Eve,and almost all the people were getting together with their family, having the big dinner or enjoying the charming lights of the Christmas tree. But Thomas was still on the way,and it was still a long way to the destination. He felt tired, lonely and cold, especially when the wind was blowing in his cab(驾驶室).Thomas pulled up the truck and reached for his jacket but stopped when he saw the box on the passenger seat next to him.
His mother was the greatest mother in the world who worried about him spending Christmas on the road alone and had given him a box filled with presents before he left home.Though he is a driver now,his mum still treats him like a kid.He reached into the red stocking that was in the box and brought out a toy tractor that looked a lot like his truck. He wondered how many stores his mother had to go to before she found such a close match.Tears blinded his eyes.
He climbed out of his truck and ran into the all-night café,which was a truck stop that many truck drivers liked to have a rest in.
But today, besides those truckers who were eating and talking loudly as usual, there were a family of two sitting in a corner, wearing shabby(破旧的)clothes and looking sleepy. The mother hugged the boy who looked unhappy and tired in her arms. His hunger was easy to tell from his extremely fleshless face.
Seeing this,Thomas missed his family more. His mum raised four kids by herself, but no matter how hard the life was,she always made sure they had a good Christmas.

根据L’Hotel des Invalides部分的“Completed in 1709,L’Hotel des Invalides now holds museums relating to France’s military history”可知,如果你想看战争遗迹,你会去L’Hotel des Invalides。
根据Notre Dame Paris部分的“It started to build in 1163 and took 185 years to finish.”;The Louvre部分的“It used to be a Royal Palace with its history dating back to the 1100’s.”;The Eiffel Tower部分的“It was Gustav Eiffel who planned this huge,iron-work tower in 1887,”以及Trocadero部分的“It was laid out for the World Fair in 1878.”
根据Trocadero部分的“It is built on a hill opposite the Eiffel Tower and provides excellent views over the city.”和The Eiffel Tower部分的“It was Gustav Eiffel who planned this huge,iron-work tower in 1887,with observation decks that provided a bird’s eye of the city.”
根据第二段第一句“When I was invited to visit the recently completed Summit One Vanderbilt,New York’s fourth-highest tower,I wasn’t expecting much.”
根据第三段中“you step into air, which makes you feel like being at 1,000 feet above ground level with its mirrored floors”可知,画线句的意思为:一旦你到了顶楼的时候。
根据倒数第二段“I took out my camera and began to take photos, feeling a connection with the city that no other observatory has been able to give me.”
根据第二段中的“the best place to start is the CN Tower. From this point, visitors can get a bird’s-eye view of the city’s amazing scenery and unique geography”可知,从加拿大国家电视塔的顶端我们可以看到整个多伦多。
根据第二段中“Instead, people on the island traded potatoes for supplies.”
根据第四段中“In 1961,a bigger disaster struck. The town was destroyed by a volcanic eruption. All 290 people on the island moved to England.”
根据最后一段中“But England was too loud and too crowded for him.He came back because the island is peaceful.”
16.F 根据下文“So the first thing we did was rent a fantastically expensive sixth-floor apartment the size of a cupboard.”
17.C 结合下文“Our building even had a tiny lift with a female voice that said,‘Ouverture des portes,’in perfect French.”
    20.A 结合空前内容“French cafés are always crowded.”及空后的内容“When do these people work?”
    22.C make one’s way意为“行走,前进”,是固定搭配。
23.B 根据上文“she realized she had gotten on the wrong bus”可知,她意识到她上错了车,所以应该是崩溃哭泣。
27.B 根据下文“he should take the detour to get Jacqueline to her mom in time”可知,大家应该是同意(agreed)。
31.B 根据上文“‘He has made my Christmas and he has made my year.I can’t thank him enough,’ she said.”
32.C 根据上文“Soon,Alec’s daughter was telling him that she had seen his wonderful act of kindness on the news!”
33.A 根据下文Alec 说的话““The smile and the joy on her face just said it”可知,对他来说这才是重要的(matters)。
    35.C 根据上文“It was just a nice,magical moment.”

    Dear Alen,
Knowing that you are interested in Chinese traditional culture,I’d like to invite you to spend the Spring Festival with my family.
The Spring Festival is the most important festival in China. Before the coming of the Spring Festival, people clean the house and then post Spring Festival couplets on the doors and decorate windows with red papercuts. On the eve of New Year, families get together and have a big dinner. On New Year’s Day people put on their new clothes.Children will get lucky money from their parents, which can make them very happy.
I hope you can join us.Looking forward to seeing you.
    Yours,
    Li Hua
Thomas felt sorry for the boy.No kid should spend Christmas Eve in a truck stop like this. Then he thought of his box filled with presents chosen by his mother. He looked at the kid again and knew what to do.Without delay,he put on his jacket, went outside and climbed into his truck. In no time did he grab the stocking out of the box.
He came back from his truck and walked to the family.“I think Santa Clause left this for you,” Thomas said and handed it to the boy.The boy’s mother shook Thomas’ hand long and hard. The boy’s face lit up almost at once and he eagerly dug inside the stocking, full of curiosity and happiness.“It is the best present I’ve ever got at Christmas,” the boy thanked.Thomas felt a little excited and thought it was the greatest Christmas that he had ever had.
