BOn many days I admit that I feel upset, days when it seems that the efforts and the struggles of so many people fighting for social and environmental justice, are fighting a losing battle. But without hope, all is lost. It is an essential survival quality that has continued our species from the time of our Stone Age ancestors. Like all people who live long enough, I have been through many dark periods and seen so much suffering. I was in New York on that terrible day, 9/11 in 2001. I still can remember the disbelief, the fear, the confusion as the city went quiet save for the wailing of the sirens警笛 声on the police cars and ambulances. It was ten years after that day that I was introduced to the Survivor Tree, a Callery pear tree discovered a month after the destruction1 of the towers, pressed between two blocks of concrete. All that was left was half a trunk that had been burnt black, with roots that were broken and only one living branch. She was almost sent to the garbage station, but a young woman, Rebecca Clough, begged that the tree might be given a chance. And so she went to be cared for in a nursery in the Bronx. Bringing that seriously damaged tree back to health was not an easy task, and it was touch and go for a while. But whenever you give her a chance, nature returns. Eventually the tree made it. Once she was strong enough, she was returned to be planted in what is now the 911 Memorial Museum. She truly is a symbol of the resilience 韧性of nature and a reminder of all that was lost on that terrible day 20 years ago. Last year, on the UN International Day of Peace, I stood silently in front of her, praying for peace on earth and for a new respect for animals and nature. It constantly makes me bold enough to hope for the better. 24. Why does the author sometimes feel upset?A. People are struggling for justice. B. Many people have lost everything. C. She is going through dark periods and suffering. D. She has low hopes of winning the battle for justice. 25. What can we learn about the Survivor Tree?A. It seemed hopeful to bring it to life at first sight. B. It was discovered and cared for by a young woman. C. It was planted in the museum one month after the destruction. D. It stands for the toughness of nature and reminds people of the loss. 26. What does the underlined phrase touch and go'in Paragraph 4 mean?A. In steady condition. B. At death's door. C. In a good state. D. On the mend. 27. What can be a suitable title for the text?A. Hope for the BestB. Conserve NatureC. Resilient NatureD. A Good RescueCEggs have been a symbol of fertility since ancient times, when they represented the rebirth of new life during the spring equinox昼夜平分点and the arrival of a new season after a long dark winter. In the Christian religion, eggs symbolize Jesus and his coming back to life. Because eggs are such an important symbol of Easter, it's natural that many Easter traditions around the world have something to do with eggs. In the city of Zenica in Bosnia and Herzegovina, there is a special celebration known as Cimburijada, wvhich marks both the Easter holiday and the beginning of spring. This festival, also known as the Festival of Scrambled炒 的 Eggs, takes place every spring in a park on the Bosnia River. Thousands of people, both locals and tourists, gather in the park at dawn. There, chefs scramble thousands of eggs in huge metal pans. The eggs will be shared with everyone. Later, the entire town participates in a barbecue and party with live music. Brave people also throw themselves into the cold spring waters of the Bosnia River for the first swim of the year. The Festival of Scrambled Eggs isn't the only eggy festival that takes place around Easter. Every year on the Monday following Easter Sunday, in Bessieres, France, chefs from the Giant Omelet Brotherhood of Bessieres gather and create a giant omelet 煎蛋卷 using 15, 000 fresh eggs. Legend has it that when the political leader Napoleon Bonaparte and his huge army were traveling through France, they spent one night near Bessieres. Napoleon had an omelet there, prepared by a local cook, and he liked it so much that he ordered the local people to gather all the eggs in the village and make a giant omelet for his army the next day. Eggs play a big role in Easter celebrations around the world. So if that box of fresh eggs falls on the floor before you can color them, just create your own scrambled egg festival. 28. What do eggs symbolize according to the text?A. The arrival of a dark season. B. An ability to support life. C. Newly-born life to earth. D. The beginning of Easter. 29. What do we know about the Festival of Scrambled Eggs?A. It observes the Easter and the start of spring. B. It takes place in a park and only locals participate. C. All the people scramble eggs together to share the fun. D. Brave people are thrown into the cold waters to celebrate it. 30. What is the Giant Omelet Brotherhood of Bessieres?A. A dish. B. A cook. C. A festival. D. An organization. 31. What is in common between the two festivals?A. Both are held in a park. B. They both fall in winter. C. Eggs are cooked by chefs. D. Similar activities are held. DNext time you open the fridge. Have a close look at what's in there. Vegetables, cheese, some milk? What else can you see? There is probably some type of plastic packaging protecting your tasty food. However, plastic pollution is one of the world's biggest environmental problems and packaging is the largest source of plastic waste. Plastic is a material used for many different purposes. However, although it is very strong, lightweight and flexible, since plastic is not found in nature, it does not break down easily. If not dealt with properly, plastic can end up in the ocean, where it causes big problems. Millions of animals die each year by eating tiny pieces of microplastics or getting tangled缠 绕up in plastic. These materials can have bad effects on people, too. Some contain harmful substances called endocrine disruptors, which can block or change vital body chemicals that influence how the body works. There are alternatives to plastic packaging, such as cardboard, paper or glass. Many countries have already banned single-use plastics. However, the case for banning plastic containers is not clear-cut. Plastic is one of the best material for preserving food. Plastic packaging is also durable耐用的and tough, and will protect food for longer so theres less waste. Plastic is also cheaper to make and lighter than many alternatives. Cardboard is not very good if it gets wet, and both it and glass are heavier than plastic. This means that more fuel is needed to transport products, which results in more pollution. Lots of packaging can be recycled or reused, and some countries recycle a large percentage of their plastic waste. For example, Germany recycles 66%, and Wales 64%. Instead of getting rid of plastic wrappers and containers entirely, perhaps we need to find better ways to use and reuse it. 32. How does the author begin the passage?A. By listing facts. B. By telling a story. C. By giving examples. D. By connecting with readers. 33. What is bad about plastic?A. It ends up in the ocean. B. It is not found in nature. C. It gives off harmful chemicals. D. It is mainly used in packaging. 34. Why do people favor plastic packaging according to the text?A. Plastic results in less pollution. B. Plastics can be recycled and reused. C. Plastic is durable and light in weight. D. Other alternatives cannot protect food. 35. What is the author's attitude towards the ban on plastic?A. Critical. B. Positive. C. Objective. D. Unconcerned.  第二节5小题; 每小题2, 满分10根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。If the prospect展望of going to college seems challenging, youre not alone.
