On the edge f the Atlantic, there is much mre water n islands. Experts say the Uists (尤伊斯特群岛) in the UK, knwn as the “lng isles” as they stretch fr 100 miles, are n the frnt line f climate change and sme f thse wh call this hme are already adapting t their changing landscape. Dnald MacPhee, an islander tld BBC, “We seem t be getting a lt mre rain—very unpredictable, but back in my father’s days yu culd guarantee that yu’d have plenty f dry weather in August. But nw it’s very unpredictable.” This lw-lying watery landscape is weak t changes in ur climate—with predictins that the sea level here culd rise by as much as half a meter ver the next few decades.
And that’s nt the nly challenge facing these islands which are s expsed t wet and strmy weather. Prfessr Stewart Angus, a castal eclgist said, “A lt f the land actually lies belw the level f the sea fr much f the tidal cycle. Secndly, yu have rising sea levels. Thirdly, yu have rising rainfall in winter. Thus yu have the great difficulty in a very lw-lying envirnment f remving that water. In fact, the rising sea level alne has the ptential t raise water levels within the islands by prgressively reducing the effectiveness f an ageing drainage netwrk.”
The airprt here prvides a lifeline service t islanders. A millin punds has been spent n the latest wrk t prtect the runway, which ends just meters frm the shre. At the islands’ arts center, a picture f a rising line is shwn. Andy Mackinnn, an artist tld us, “S, the line represents a symblic level that the sea will rise t. I hpe that it des make peple think abut what we’re ding.”
And frm the children here, ut f taking care f their lcal beach, messages in English and Gaelic (盖尔语) f their hpes and fears are being sent t the UN climate summit in Glasgw. “Stp sea levels rising. We culd be under the water sn.” These small islands hpe fr big cmmitments frm wrld leaders t lessen the wrst that climate change might bring.
What des the first paragraph imply?

The sea level will rise by 0.5 meter in decades.
What is the big challenge fr islanders nw accrding t Paragraph 2?

C. Prtecting the runway.D. Getting rid f the water.
What is Andy Mackinnn’s attitude twards the islands?
Cncerned.B. Indifferent.C. Neutral.D. Relieved.

Scientists have an unlikely new helper while explring the Earth’s crust (地壳) deep beneath the
cean: Fin whales. New research, published Thursday in Science, finds these Fin whale calls’ sund waves can help create images f the seaflr dwn t 2. 5 kilmeters.
Seaflr imaging, which is imprtant fr studying things like earthquake mechanics and carbn strage capacity, usually uses large air guns that send waves f sund dwnwards. The sund waves g thrugh the crust and bunce back t instruments n the seaflr, carrying infrmatin abut the structures they travel thrugh. But such surveys are expensive, and the guns’ explsive nise may interrupt sea creatures that use sund t cmmunicate.
Vaclav Kuna, the study c-authr, was studying earthquakes when he nticed strange readings n the seaflr seismic(地震的) instruments, which turned ut t match the frequencies f fin whale calls. Whale sngs ften appear in such instruments’ recrds, says Emily Rland, a marine seismlgist at the University f Washingtn. Seismlgists usually see these signals as annyance. Kuna, hwever, nticed that the signals were nt cming directly frm the whales, but were eches buncing back frm within the crust.
This technique des have limitatins, Kuna says. Fin whale sngs are limited in frequency, meaning the subsurface images are nt as clear as thse made with air guns. Additinally, a relatively flat seaflr is needed t triangulate(作三角测量) the whales’ psitins while multiple statins wuld be needed in uneven r muntainus regins, he says.
Nevertheless, these whales are fund almst everywhere except the ice-cvered areas f the Arctic. The whale calls’ wide existence means they culd prvide new insight int ld seismic datasets, Rland says. “At least the whale sngs can serve as an additinal surce f signals. They are free and they are always there,” Kuna says. “It’s a win-win.”
What d we knw abut seaflr imaging in Paragraph 2?
It may affect sme sea animals.B. It can help predict earthquakes.
C. It is nt cmpletely accurate.D. It is envirnmentally-friendly.
What can we infer abut fin whale calls?
They can help scientists t lcate their habitats.
They are easy t recrd and measure in the cean.
They are likely t be used fr seaflr imaging.
They have different frequencies amng fin whales.
What is the ptential use f fin whale sngs?
Exchanging messages between whales.
Wrking as an extra surce f signals.
Prviding useful insights int whales.
Explring the ice-cvered areas f the Arctic.
What is the best title fr the text?
Fin Whale Calls Reveal Structure beneath Ocean Flr
Fin Whales Cmmunicate by Singing Special Sngs
Fin Whale Prtectin Is a Win-win Mve fr All
Seaflr Imaging Helps t Lcate Mre Resurces
