There is a famous expression in English: "Stop the world, I want to get off!” This expression refers to a feeling of panic, or stress, that makes a person want to stop whatever they are doing, try to relax, and become calm again. "Stress” means pressure or tension. It is one of the most common causes of health problems in modem life. Too much stress results in physical, emotional, and mental health problems.
There are numerous physical effects of stress. Stress can affect the heart. It can increase the pulse rate, and can cause high blood pressure. Stress can affect the respiratory system(呼 吸系统).It can cause a person to breathe too fast, resulting in a loss of important carbon dioxide. Stress can affect the stomach. It can cause stomach pains and problems digesting food.
Emotions are also easily affected by stress. People suffering from stress often feel anxious. They may have panic attacks. They may feel tired all the time. When people are under stress, they often respond too strongly to little problems. For example, a normally gentle parent under a lot of stress at work may shout at a child for dropping a glass of juice.
Long-term stress can lead to serious mental illnesses. Depression, an extreme feeling of sadness and hopelessness, can be the result of lasting stress. Alcoholism(酗 酒)and other addictions often develop as a result of overuse of alcohol or drugs to try to relieve stress. Eating disorders, such as anorexia(厌食症),are sometimes caused by stress and are often made worse by stress. If stress is allowed to continue, then one's mental health is put at risk.
It is obvious that stress is a serious problem. It has a great influence on the well-being of our bodies, our feelings, and our minds. So, reduce stress: stop the world and rest for a while.
- Which of the following is NOT a common problem caused by stress?
A. Physical problems. B. Anecdotal problems.
C. Mental problems. D. Emotional problems.
- Why does the writer take a gentle parent under stress as an example?
- To show that people under stress may feel tired all the time.
- To prove that stress affects our physical health.
- To show how people under a lot of pressure may overreact to little things.
- To explain why stress makes people nervous.
- People suffering from emotional stress may feel _____.
A. excited B. hungry C. thirsty D. tired
- According to the essay, which of the following parts of the body does not have physical problems caused by stress?
A. The arms. B. The stomach. C. The lungs. D. The heart.
D
Have you ever noticed that some people can eat what they want and stay in shape, while others carefully watch what they eat and still put on weight? How frustrating! However, scientists are beginning to believe that some people get the ability to stay thin from their parents.
Scientists say that when some people eat, their bodies will naturally store the excess energy from food as fat. These people gain weight if they eat more than they need to each day. Meanwhile, other people eat more than they need to but their bodies are able to “bum off5 the extra food without making fat, so they rarely have weight problems.
To show that this is true, scientists have experimented on laboratory mice. They gave the mice a special diet with a lot of fat. Some mice gained weight while the other mice stayed thin, even though both groups of mice ate the same amount of food and got the same amount of exercise. Scientists concluded that weight gain seemed to be influenced by genetic (基因的) factors. They also believe they have now identified the genes that may cause this tendency. These genes, according to the scientists, get passed down the generations. Armed with this knowledge, they believe it may be possible to develop medicines that can target the genes and stop people from gaining weight.
The study of weight gain is becoming more important as the number of people with weight problems continues to grow. In the United States, over fifty per cent of the population are now overweight. This means they are at risk of illnesses such as high blood pressure and heart disease.
Current medicines for weight control do not work very well because they can have serious side effects, such as heart problems. However, it takes a long time to develop and thoroughly test new drugs. Therefore, despite this breakthrough in the study of weight-loss drugs, scientists and health professionals all agree that currently the best way to control weight gain is to have a healthy, balanced diet and an active lifestyle with daily exercise. This will not only help people avoid becoming overweight, but also help them stay healthy and energetic.
- According to the scientists, some people ____.
- are able to stay thin because of genetic factors
- can eat what they want and stay healthy forever
- usually keep doing exercise to lose their weight
- don't eat anything every day but still put on weight
- Some people don't need to worry about weight problems because _____.
- they eat many vegetables
- they eat less than others
- they don't store any energy from food as fat
- they can bum off the extra food without making fat
- What can we learn from the passage?
- Fewer people will have weight problems in the future.
- People with weight problems may suffer from heart trouble.
- We now have good medicine for people with weight problems.
- The result of the experiments on mice and humans are different.
- What does the last paragraph imply?
- Current medicine solve weight problems well.
- We should exercise regularly and eat properly.
- Taking exercise every day may cause heart problems.
- Testing new drugs is hard because of the side effects.
第二节 供5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面的短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两 项为多余选项.
Don't we all hope to understand one another better? How can you get a good idea of what kind of person your new friend is? The people around us can give a lot of information about themselves without even knowing it. They express it in the little things that they do. 36.So here are four small things that can tell you a lot about a person.
- Their body language.
Interpreting someone’s body language can be a powerful tool in helping you understand their personality, attitudes and feelings. For example, facial cues like smiling convey happiness, and biting at your lip means you're worried or anxious, clenched fists indicate anger or frustration, crossed arms are a sign of defensiveness. 37.
- The way they dress.
Another great way you can learn a lot about a person without ever talking to them is by observing the way they dress. 38. People wearing colorful clothes and fun patterns are usually creative and artistic types who want to express themselves through their fashion sense.
- 39.___
American author Dave Berry once said, a person who is nice to you but rude to the waiter is not a nice person. The way in which you treat people of lower social status than you or people who have nothing to offer you is a telling aspect of your character. When someone is rude or disrespectful to a stranger like a barista or a server, it shows that they're superficial and over-privileged.
- How they make eye contact.
Appropriate eye contact is a good way for someone to signal that they're paying attention to you and that they're interested in what you're saying. 40.Shy people also have trouble looking at someone in the eye for too long, especially if they find the other person attractive or intimidating.
It is important that we know how to assess people so we can make better decisions about them. These tips can come in handy in the dating pool, making friends, job hiring and can help you make a good first impression.
- The way they speak.
- How they treat strangers.
- All you have to do is observe carefully.
- This is actually an amazing thing in a conversation.
- However, those who often look away during a conversation may be uncomfortable or distracted.
- Generally speaking, those who dress casually are often easygoing people who value comfort over style.
- Learning how to better read others5 body language can go a long way in helping you understand what they are thinking even if they don't say a word to you.

Lily loved school. However, there was one class Lily worried about more than any other-art. She didn't know why she just wasn't any good at drawing, painting, or cutting.
Ms. Clay, the art teacher, stood at the front of the room. ''Class, next Friday our school is going to have an art competition,” she announced. Ms. Clay was a great teacher, and Lily liked her a lot. But this announcement made Lily nervous. "Everyone in the school will create a piece of artwork to show in the library. You can use the different types of artwork we have been studying.” Ms. Clay was quite excited when she spoke while Lily found herself sinking lower in her chair.
Lily had the whole weekend to work on her project, but she could not think of anything to do. On Monday, Lily felt frightened, so after school Lily asked Ms. Clay if she could write an art paper instead of doing an art project.
“I understand this project scared you, Lily," Ms. Clay said. "Just remember, you can create any kind of art you want?' Ms. Clay smiled at her. "Art is a person's way of expressing his or her feelings-it isn't always painting, drawing, or cutting. I know you will think of something very creative, and I can't wait to see it.”
When Lily arrived home, she took out a piece of paper and a pencil. She remembered Ms. Clay's words. “Art is a person's way of expressing his or her feelings.” Lily wrote the word “terrified“ on her paper. She crumpled (揉皱)the paper and threw it to the side of her desk.
