Starting from 2020, Chinese has become a course for high school students in Ireland. It has also become an exam subject of Ireland’s Leaving Certificate(证书)Examinations, the Irish version(版本)of Gaokao, since 2022. About 100 students took the exam of Chinese last year.

In 2017, Ireland carried out a ten-year plan. The plan included the goal of increasing the number of students studying foreign languages like Chinese. By 2021, all high school students in the country must study a foreign language. This move could help prepare for the increasing importance of non-English speaking countries.

This is not the first time Chinese has been considered as a language needed to be tested at school. Back in March 2017, Chinese became a graduation exam subject at an Italian high school, Sophie School, and 145 of its 910 students chose to study the language. By now, the Chinese course has been taught at the Italian school for years. Maria Silva Boccardi, director of the school, says Chinese is becoming a global language and they set up the course because many students asked for it.

There were only a few schools that provided Chinese courses and exams in the past. But now, Chinese courses have become an important part of teaching plans in many Western countries. This also encourages many Chinese young people to go to Western schools and colleges to teach Chinese and spread Chinese culture.

    27. What’s the best title for the passage?

    A. High School Students in Ireland B. Chinese Learning in Western Countries

    C. Young People Teach Chinese Abroad D. Foreign Language Learning in the World

There are many reasons to enjoy drinking tea. However, you should let the hot tea cool down a little before you drink it. Why? A new study published in the International Journal of Cancer gives the answer.

“Many people enjoy drinking tea coffee or other hot drinks. However, according to our report, drinking very hot tea can increase the risk of esophageal cancer (食道癌), so you’d better wait until hot drinks cool down before drinking,” the lead writer of the study, Dr. Farhad Islami of the American Cancer Society, said.

For the study, Islami and his team followed more than 50, 000 people aged between 40 and 75 years old. They found 0.7 percent of those people had esophageal cancer.

The National Cancer Institute reported that about 17, 290 Americans had esophageal cancer in a year, and that only 19 percent of sick people survived. However, five years later, they died.

The scientists found that drinking 700 ml drinks (about three cups) every day or more at a higher temperature (60℃ or hotter) would have a 90 percent higher risk of esophageal cancer, compared with people drinking the same amount at a temperature below 60℃.

“Long distance never separates close friends.” It’s easier to make new friends than to say goodbye to old ones.

When I was still studying in China, my school held a singing competition. I entered it because I really loved singing. I sang with a girl named Jenny. She’s one of my best friends.

Unluckily, I was nervous and I forgot the lyrics for a moment when we were singing. I was standing on the stage, looking pale on the face. We lost the competition. I felt terribly sorry, but Jenny tried to comfort me by saying “There will be another chance”.

After about a week, our school’s art festival began. I decided to take part in it. The first person I thought of to join me was Jenny, although I wasn’t sure if she would like to. But while I was asking other people to join me, she said she would join as well. We decided to sing the song See You Again at the festival because I would leave for the UK after I finished the performance. We prepared for it for a long time.

Finally, the day of the festival arrived. As I walked into the classroom, the class started clapping (鼓掌) for me. Someone had written “Sally, Come On!” on the blackboard. My classmates gave cards to me. After I completed my performance, everyone cheered for me.

It was a really unforgettable and touching afternoon. I wanted to thank Jenny, who didn’t give up on me when I felt down. I wanted to thank my friends for helping me, and I really wanted to thank all of my classmates who were with me in my two middle school years as well.

    27. Sally looked pale on the face because ________.

    A. she was seriously ill B. she got nervous and forgot the lyrics

    C. she was too weak to stand on the stage D. she was afraid of losing the competition

    A. Unforgettable and touching. B. Boring and tiring.

    C. Successful but tiring. D. Sad and regretful.

    29. What can we know about Jenny according to the passage?

    A. She would leave for the UK with Sally.

    B. She sang badly at the singing competition.

    C. She sang a song with Sally at the art festival.

    D. She felt angry after they lost the singing competition.

This was a new record for Chinese climbers Some Nepalese surveyors reached the top of the mountain in May. 2019 to carry out measurements(测量). The two countries reached an agreement on the height of the mountain before the announcement.

Your Internet experience is ruined when the net speed is too slowit takes so long toopen a web page and the show you're watching stops every few minutes. That can be very boring. But it could be a thing of the past. China's major telecom carriers(电信运营商)will start to provide 5G services in China.

The“G”in 5G refers to the generations of mobile technologies. 1G let us talk to each other, 2G let us send messages, 3G gave us mobile data(数据)and the Internet, and 4G made all of these things faster.

Now 5G promises much faster speed, and more stable(稳定的)connections. This means that you will be able to download(下载)an entire HD movie in seconds and only experience a short delay(延迟)between sending and receiving data.

According to the Straits Times, 5G will be able to improve many advanced technologies. With a 5G network, the short delay in information exchange will allow driverless cars to run more safely, as they will be able to communicate in real time and avoid probable dangers. Meanwhile, 5G-enabled wearable products will keep doctors in touch with their patients and warn them immediately if there's something wrong. Besides, VR games will become more popular with 5G. The short delay of 5G will make games feel even more real.

But 5G is not perfect. For one thing, 5G will not “travel” far. On 4G networks, you canbe 10 kilometers away from the nearest transmission base(传输基地). But 5G will only cover about 300 meters, meaning that we will need more transmission bases so that we can get signals. And in order to use 5G, we have to buy new products specifically designed for 5G that are expensive now.

    47. The underlined word“ruined”here means“_______”.

    A. achieved B. expected C. broken D. improved

    48. What can't we do with 5G?

    A. Play games quickly and safely. B. Experience more stable network connections.

    C. Make VR games more popular. D. Download an HD movie in seconds.

    49. What can we conclude(推断)from the passage?

    A. Fewer transmission bases will be needed in the near future.

    B. New products designed for 5G are cheap now.

    C. Many advanced technologies will be improved because of 5G.

    D. There will be no delay in information exchange with 5G.

    50. How far can you be away from the nearest transmission base if you use a 5G mobile phone?

    A. About 3 kilometers B. About 10 kilometers.

    C. About 300 kilometers. D. About 300 meters.

    第二节根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。(共5小题,计5分)

The Double Ninth Festival is a special day for old people in China. It started long ago. 51 Activities are held to show love and respect(尊敬)to old people.

Respecting old people is a tradition in China. That's because the Chinese know that older people have knowledge and experience that young people can learn.52When an older person enters a room. everyone stands up. People are introduced from the oldest to the youngest. When we present something to an older person, both hands are used. 53

In western countries, however, older people seldom think they are old.54They'd rather do everything themselves. Even after retirement(退休), they take up hobbies, part-time jobs and new activities to keep their bodies working well. But of course among westerners, older people are respected, too. Usually, seniors don't have to buy tickets for trains or buses. They are given discount(折扣)in stores and restaurants.

55For holidays, the families usually meet at their grandparents'home, and a great smile and a warm hug for their parents are enough for grown-up children to show their respect.

    A. The festival has a short history.

    B. The festival is on lunar September 9th.

    C. Old people need more respect in western countries.

    D. They are called“seniors”instead of“old people”.

    E. But western seniors don't often live with their children.

    F. There are many ways in which Chinese people express their respect to the old.

    G. Young people always offer their seats to older people on a crowded subway or bus.
