Pat never did homework. “Too boring”, he said. He played baseball, basketball and computer games instead. His teachers told him, “Pat! Do your homework or you won’t learn a thing.” And it’s true. Sometimes he did feel like a fool.
But what could he do? He hated homework.
One day, Pat’s cat was playing with a little doll and he grabbed it away. To his surprise, it wasn’t a doll at all, but a little elf. He yelled, “Save me! Don’t give me back to that cat. I’ll make your wish come true. I promise you that.”
Pat couldn’t believe how lucky he was! Here was the answer to all of his problems. So he said, “Only if you do all my homework till the end of the term, that’s 35 days. If you do a good enough job, I could even get A’s.”
The little elf kicked his legs and said, “Oh, I hate that, but I’ll do it.”
And true to his word, that little elf began to do Pat’s homework except that there was one problem. The elf didn’t always know what to do and he needed help. “Help me! Help me!” he’d say. And Pat would have to help—in whatever way.
“I don’t know this word,” the elf said while reading Pat’s homework. “Get me a dictionary. Look up the word and sound it out by each letter.”
When it came to math, Pat was out of luck. “What are times tables?” the elf asked. “We elves never need that. Here, sit down beside me, you simply must guide me.”
As a matter of fact, every day in every way that little elf was asking for Pat’s help! Pat was working harder than ever! He was staying up nights! He had never felt so tired.
Finally, the last day of school arrived and the elf was free to go. As for homework, there was no more, so he quietly slipped out the back door.
Pat got his A’s. His classmates were amazed, his teachers smiled and were full of praise. And his parents? They wondered what had happened to Pat. He was now the model kid. He cleaned his room and was cheerful and never rude, like he had developed a whole new attitude.

We all know there is a problem with plastic pollution. Five trillion plastic bags are used every year. One million plastic drinking bottles are bought every minute.
What if we could use plastic waste to build roads? This is exactly what Toby has done.
In 2019, Toby’s company built the world’s first plastic road in Elgin town, Scotland. The plastic waste was made into grains and then mixed with biturnen. The road looks just like any other road. But it has improved strength and is more stretchy.
“Our technology can not only help solve the problem of plastic waste but also produce roads that deal better with changes in the weather, reducing cracks (裂缝) and holes,” Toby said.
The idea came from a trip to India. “I saw people in India would put plastic waste into pots and burn it. The plastic would melt down and form a seal (封口) in the hole,” said Toby.
“I knew that there must be some similarities between the plastic and biturnen, which both come from oil. That’s how I started to think about mixing them,” he said.
After lots of testing, Toby found the perfect way. And now his company has built many plastic roads around the world. A one-kilometer stretch of road uses about 684,000 plastic bottles or 1.8 million plastic bags. The road itself can be recycled at the end of its lifespan (使用期限). The materials can be reused to build new roads.
“We’re just a small part of ending the plastic problems, but it’s nice to be part of it,” Toby said. “I just don’t want my daughters to live in a world where there are more plastics in our oceans than fish.”
29.What does the underlined word “This” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.The serious pollution problem. B.To use lots of plastic bags.
C.To build roads with plastic waste. D.The plastic waste on the road.
30.Toby came up with his idea _______.
A.because he knew the cracks appeared due to the changeable weather
B.when he saw plastic waste burnt in India and form a seal in the hole
C.after he found a perfect way to build roads with drinking bottles
D.when he noticed there was a problem with plastic pollution
31.Which of the following statements is true?
A.Plastic bottles bought every minute is enough for a 1-kilometer stretch of road.
B.The plastic roads have improved strength and can be used without a lifespan.
C.Plastic waste and grains were used together to build the world’s first plastic road.
D.The technology can produce plastic roads and will end the pollution problems.
32.What’s the best title according to the passage?
A.A new road construction company. B.A new technology to build roads.
C.A mixture of plastic and biturnen. D.The end to plastic problems.

Amy was a dear little girl, but she was too apt to waste time in getting ready to do her tasks, instead of doing them at once as she ought.
In the village in which she lived, Mr. Thornton kept a store where he sold fruit of all kinds, including berries in their season. One day he said to Amy whose parents were quite poor, “Would you like to earn some money?”
“Oh, yes,” replied she, “for I want some new shoes, and papa has no money to buy them with.”
“Well, Amy.” said Mr. Thornton, “I noticed some fine, ripe blackberries in Mr. Green’s pasture today, and he said that anybody was welcome to them. I will pay you thirteen cents a quart for all you will pick for me, but I won’t pay you any if you pick less than a quart.”
Amy was delighted at the thought of earning some money; so she ran home to get a basket, intending to go immediately to pick the berries.
Then she thought she would like to know how much money she would get if she picked five quarts. With the help of her slate and pencil, she found out that she would get sixty-five cents.
“But supposing I should pick a dozen quarts,” thought she, “how much should I earn then?” “Dear me,” she said, after figuring a while, “I should earn a dollar and fifty-six cents.”

The ancient silk road was a once in a life time journey. It was one of the most important milestones of trade and culture in world history, and the pioneer, Zhang Qian, could not be easily forgotten by history. He was an outstanding diplomat, traveler and explorer in the Han Dynasty of China, honored as the “the first Chinese to open their eyes to see the world” and “the Columbus of the east”.

In 138 BC, at the reign of Emperor Wudi, Zhang Qian was sent to the west of China for an alliance with the Yue-chi people to fight against the Xiongnu. He started his trip from Chang’an (now Xi’an in Shaanxi Province) to Longxi (in Gansu Province). Along the way, no matter how difficult the environment was, his faith was firm. But unfortunately, Zhang was caught by the Xiongnu people just as he left Han, and was held prisoner for ten years.

Zhang finally managed to escape with some of his men and continued to travel west without any dry food or drinking water. Due to the excellent skill of' shooting arrows, they survived by eating some birds and other animals along the way. When Zhang at last reached the Yue-chi in Northern India, he was disappointed to find that they didn’t want to fight against the Xiongnu people. On the return journey, Zhang Qian and his men were again caught. It was not until 125 BC that they returned to Chiang’an.
Though Zhang hadn’t finished his mission, he brought back first-hand information on the geography, ethnography, and societies of Central Asia. The paths Zhang Qian explored later served as the highways connecting Europe, the Middle East, Mesopotamia, Central Asia, and East Asia. Commodities, crops, animals, religions, ideas, music, technology, and artifacts have been transported by diplomats, merchants and soldiers along this network of highways, which have, since the 19th century been known as the “Silk Road”. Some people like the freedom of driving their own cars. But others find driving to be inconvenient or even dangerous. Fortunately, the driverless cars we've seen in movies and TV shows are on the way here.
The first driverless car to hit the screen was Herbie, a cute talking car from the 1968 comedy The Love Bug. Herbie could drive by himself and even talk to his human friends He didn't have any advanced technology—just magic.
KITT was another driverless car that appeared on the 1980s TV show Knight Rider. KITT used advanced Al to drive itself and help its rider Michael Knight catch criminals.
While the driverless cars of today can't talk to us, they do have many similarities to the ones we've seen onscreen. Nearly every major car company is working on their own autonomous, vehicle(AV). Tesla, for example. has developed a driver-assistance system for its cars called Tesla Autopilot.
Tesla Autopilot can complete many of the tasks hat human drivers usually do. It can make sure that your car is centered in the correct lane, as well as park itself and stop if it thinks that a crash might happen. However, it is not fully self-driving.
Google's sister company Waymo seems to be leading the way in the AV area. Its self-driving cars are already being used for taxi services in the US city of Phoenix. It is the only self-driving car service that operates without human backup drivers. It uses common cameras as well as laser radar to determine distance, which allows the cars to get around without risk of crashing.
Although companies are making great progress in developing AV. there is still a lot of work to be done. Year after year, companies promise that fully self-driving cars will become widely available. But nearly all of these promises have fallen through.
One of the problems is that designing a self-driving car that is safe and easy to use is much harder than people realize. Self-driving cars have to analyze millions of data-points in order to prevent accidents and choose the correct route. Humans are used to doing this—but designing an Al that can work like human mind to make a decision quickly is very difficult.
However, as new technologies like 5G develop, fully self-driving cars will come closer to reality.
    33.What were Herbie and KITT?
A.They were interesting TV shows. B.They were driverless cars onscreen.
C.They were cars using advanced AI D.They were owners of driverless cars
    34.Tesla Autopilot can________.
A.talk to his human friends clearly B.stop to avoid a crash happening
C.do all the tasks as human drivers D.fly for a short while if necessary
35.What does "It" in Paragraph 6 refer to?
A.The company of Google. B.The US city of Phoenix.
C.The self-driving car service D.A car with backup drivers.
36.How might the future of the fully self-driving cars be according to the passage?
A.It will be too hard to design a self-driving car that is safe and easy to use
B.Designing an Al that can make a decision like human mind is impossible.
C.Fully self-driving cars that are widely used must come to reality years later.
D.New technologies will speed up the development of fully self-driving cars.

3.(10分)As a son of a dirt﹣poor farmer,my father left school early and went to work in a factory, because education was for the rich then. So,the world became his school. With great interest,he read everything he could, listened to the elders and learned about the world beyond his tiny hometown. "There's so much to learn." He always said. "Though we're born stupid, only the stupid remains that way." He was determined that all of his children should receive education.
Thus,my father insisted that we learned at least one new thing each day.Though we thought it crazy,we never refused his request. And dinner time seemed perfect for sharing what we had learned. We would talk about the news of the day.No matter how unimportant,it was never taken lightly. He would listen carefully, gave us relevant comments, then shared the day's new learning.
My father,at the head of the table, would push back his chair and pour a glass of red wine,be ready to listen."Felice," he'd say, "tell me what you learned today." "I learned that the population of Nepal is…" Silence.
He was thinking about what was said, "The population of Nepal.Well…" he'd say, "Get the map,and let's see where Nepal is." And the whole family went on a search for Nepal.
This same experience was repeated until each family member had a turn.Dinner ended only after we had a clear understanding of at least half such facts.
As children,we thought very little about these educational wonders. Our family, however, was growing together and participating in one another's education. And by looking at us,listening to us,respecting our input, saying yes to our value,my father was unquestionably our most influential teacher.
Later during my training as a future teacher,I studied with some of the most famous educators. They were telling what my father had known all along﹣the value of continual learning. His ways of teaching have served me well all my life. Not a single day has been wasted, though I can never tell when knowing the population of Nepal might prove useful.

4.(10分) Your Internet experience is ruined when the net speed is too slow﹣it takes so long to open a web page and the reality show you're watching stops every now and then. That can be very annoying. But it could be a thing of the past.In the near future, major telecom carriers will start to provide 5 G services.
What is 5 G?What difference will it really make to our lives? The "G" in "5 G" refers to the generations of mobile network technologies.1 G let us talk to each other,2 G let us send messages,3 G gave us mobile data and the Internet, and 4 G made all of these things faster. Now 5 G promises much faster data download and upload speeds, and more stable connections. This means that you will be able to download an HD movie in seconds and only experience a short delay(延迟) between sending and receiving data.
For example, when you have a video chat with your friend, there is generally a 100 to 200 milliseconds delay with 4 G,but 5 G will reduce the delay to 1 millisecond or less, which is almost real time.
5 G will be able to improve many advanced technologies, such as driverless cars, wearable devices and entertainment. With a 5 G network, the short delay in information exchange will allow driverless cars to run more safely,as they will be able to communicate in real time and avoid potential dangers.Meanwhile,5 G﹣enabled wearable devices will keep doctors updated on the health status of their patients and alert them immediately if there's something wrong.Besides,VR games will become more popular with 5 G.The short delay of 5 G will make the games feel even more real.
Though 5 G will make our lives more convenient,it will not be perfect. For one thing,5 G will not "travel" far.On 4 G networks, you can be 10 kilometers away from the nearest transmission base( 基站 )and hardly lose signal. But 5 G will only cover about 300 meters, meaning that we will need more transmitters so that we can get signals. And in order to use 5 G,we will have to buy new products specifically designed for 5 G that are expensive.

    (1)The "G" in "5 G" is short for " ".
    A.Grams
    B.Generations
    C.Games
    D.Grades
(2)Which question does Paragraph 4 answer?
A.How much does 5 G cost in real time?
    B.Why will 5 G reduce the delay?
    C.How will 5 G improve driverless cars?
    D.What changes will 5 G bring us?
(3)What does the underlined word "alert" mean in Paragraph 4?
    A.Warn.
    B.Suggest.
    C.Improve.
    D.Support.
(4)What is the problem of 5 G according to the last paragraph?

His story mirrors the real lives of many young people at the time. "When I first read Life during my college years,I burst into tears.I felt that my life path and fate were the same as his." said Chinese writer Ge Fei.
    The heartbeat of the time
As a realistic piece of work, the story in Ordinary World spans from early 1975 to 1985,and aims to tell the huge historical changes of the life in the city and countryside in China.
