We’ve been driving around in gas(汽油)— powered cars for over 100 years. Once we run out of all the oil from the earth, we can’t make more. Is it time for a change?
Biofuel
One simple way to use less gas is to fill up with biofuel, a fuel (燃料) made from plants. Biofuels can be brewed (酿制) from corn, wheat stems or other plant waste. Even old cooking oil can be turned into diesel, a fuel used in trucks. Most cars can’t run only on biofuel, so it’s mixed with gas. But every little bit helps!
Go electric
An electric car has an electric motor that runs on batteries, which come in a big pack. Instead of filling up the tank, an electric car owner plugs (插) it into an outlet to recharge (充电). What happens when the batteries run down? You need to find somewhere to plug in. It can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 8 hours to recharge an electric car. That’s not as handy as a quick stop at a gas station.
Hybrid ( gas + electric)
A hybrid car has two engines— one uses gas and the other uses electricity. For short trips, it turns on batteries like an—electric car. But if the batteries are low, the car can change to the gas engine. This can be a good choice for people who are worried about the batteries running out halfway through a trip. But when the car burns gas, it still gives off waste gases like a regular car.
Solar power
Could we use the sun to power cars? Some car companies are working on it. A solar car has an electric motor that runs on batteries. But instead of being plugged in, the batteries are recharged by the solar panels (太阳能板) on the car’s roof and body. To charge up, you just need to park the car in the sun! But making solar panels and batteries that are powerful enough to move a car is very expensive. It might take a good bit of time before solar cars are available to the general public.
66. What is biofuel made from?
A. B. C. D.
67. What does the underlined word “handy” mean in Chinese?
A. 方便的 B. 耗时的 C. 时尚的 D. 便宜的
68. What is the problem with a hybrid car?
A. It can only be used for short trips.
B. It is difficult to repair a broken hybrid car.
C. It still produces harmful gases when burning gasoline.
D. It is not easy to change from the electric engine to the gas one.
69. What can we learn about the solar cars from the passage?
A. They cannot only run on solar power.
B. They need to be plugged in for recharging.
C. They are too heavy for the batteries to run.
D. They are too expensive for common people to afford now.
70. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. Ways to replace gas. B. Qualities of different cars.
C. Suggestions on reducing air pollution. D. Disadvantages of different kinds of energy.
D
High-tech machines have made life easier for millions around the world. However, some people still prefer low-tech ways of doing things. Here’s an example of why this is happening. You can microwave a frozen (冷冻的) hamburger in 60 seconds. However, it won’t taste as good as one you cook on the stove. And if you’re in that much of a hurry, you probably won’t take time to toast (烘烤) the bread. High-tech cooking saves time, but it doesn’t make better-tasting meals.
Most people get their news from high-tech sources (来源) like television or the Internet. This has many advantages. For example, electronic news is more up to date than newspapers or magazines. It’s also more exciting to see live and videotaped news events than photographs.
However, newspapers and magazines have some important advantages. They give more background and details. They also let you read the parts that are important to you and skip (跳过) the rest. Other high-tech time savers have similar disadvantages. For example, most people use the phone or email to stay in touch with friends and family members who live in other places. But when you use the Internet or the phone, you don’t always think carefully about what you are saying, and sometimes you forget the important things you want to communicate. Similarly, when you do your homework on the computer, you needn’t check your spelling by yourself. However, you are so busy with the computer that they don’t pay enough attention to the actual words they are writing.
71. What advantages do high-tech machines have?
A. They make more delicious meals.
B. They can save time and make life easier.
C. They can provide news with detailed information.
D. They make students do their homework carefully.
72. How many advantages does the writer mention about high-tech sources?
A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D. Five.
73. Which of the following is NOT true according to the text?
A. We sometimes forget the important things to say when talking on the phone.
B. We won’t miss important information while reading newspapers and magazines.
C. We can get the latest news from high-tech sources like television or the Internet.
D. When we email our friends, we are always careful to choose the right words to say.
74. How does the writer feel about high-tech tools?
A. Easy come, easy go. B. Better late than never.
C. Every coin has two sides. D. Learn to walk before you run.
75. How is the text mainly developed?
A. By giving examples. B. By listing numbers.
C. By following time order. D. By describing a process.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? If you were like most children, you probably let your imagination run wild. Maybe you dreamed of flying into space or being a famous cook. Then perhaps over the years, your dreams became more realistic(现实的). Or you might have given up some altogether.
It’s important to have dreams because dreams can give us the energy to succeed in life. Dreams inspire(激励) us. They might take a few years or they might take a lifetime to achieve. The important thing is that you’re always working for your dream. And the best way to do that is by setting goals.
What is the difference between a dream and a goal? It’s been said that dreams are the final destination(终点); goals are the stops along the way. Dreams can be very general. But the steps you take should be very specific. Your dreams mean what you want, but goals tell how you’ll get there. That makes goal set a necessary step in reaching your dreams.
Many successful people have spoken about dreams. Former US Secretary of State Colin Powell stressedthe importance of working for your dreams. “A dream doesn’t become reality through magic; it takes sweat(汗水), determination(决心)and hard work. ”Writer Les Brown reminded us that dreams have no age limit. “You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream. ”
If you’ve been dreaming about doing something for years, start today. Write down your dream, and establish your goals. Then you’ll be on your way to making your dreams come true.

Zhong Fangrong, whose score in the latest national college entrance exam,or Gaokao, was among the best in China, reaffirmed(重申) her decision to major in archaeology(考古学)for her undergraduate studies on Tuesday, ignoring the head-shaking of shock netizens(网民).
With her high score on the test--676 out of 750--Zhong could have chosen virtual any major at any university in the country. So it surprised people when she signed up for archaeology, one of the least popular majors in China.
In a letter replying to the highly regarded Chinese archaeologist Fan Jinshi, the honorary resident(名誉院长) of the Dunhuang Academy, Zhong expressed her desire to follow her heart, as Fan had done.
Zhong said it was Fan who had influenced her and gave her the confidence to study archaeology at Peking University, and she pledged (发誓)to follow in Fan’s footsteps and devote herself to the field.
Earlier this month Zhong, a student from a small village in Leiyang, Hunan Province, made headlines for her high Gaokao score, which was fourth among the 194, 000 liberal arts students(文科生) in her province.
When her decision to study archaeology was reported in the media, Fan sent Zhong her biography and a letter encouraging her to stay true to her dreams.
Described as a“left-behind girl” by Chinese media, Zhong was raised by her grandparents after her parents left their hometown to work for years in Guangzhou.
Some netizens were surprised by Zhong’s decision and said her choice would make it difficult to find a good job with a high income after graduation.

C. Because they were afraid that Zhong’s parents would be strongly against her decision.
D. Because they imagined Zhong’s grandparents would be lonely after she went to university.

My daughter Becky graduated from Washington High School in June. During the graduation ceremony, one of her classmates gave a simple speech that I will always remember. She talked about the "givers" of this world. She said, "You will be a success if you make another person smile. If you are a friend to someone who needs a little help, you will get an 'A'!"
After the ceremony, when all of the students were outside the hall trying to find their parents and friends, a man and his wife came to me and asked if I was Becky's mom. I said yes and the man handed me a gift and told me how much they appreciated Becky's kindness to their daughter, Jessica, during the school sports meeting the week before.
Jessica's left leg was hurt and she was unable to finish the up-hill race. Becky was worried about her and kept going back to check on her leg. Jessica's dad told me that Becky had shown more concern (关怀) for her daughter than the coach, and that he and his wife would never forget her kindness. Of course, at that time I had tears in my eyes. It is reported that some developed countries have shipped broken parts of computers to China. Such a thing can be found almost every day although it is against international laws. Last month Hong Kong officers found 131,000 kilograms of broken computers, TVs and phones sent from Japan. Things like these are called electronic waste, or e-waste. Dealing with them is not an easy job because dangerous poisons like mercury (汞) and lead (铅) can be found in them. Every time an old computer breaks down, it needs to be dealt with safely. But at present, broken computer parts are usually buried. It may be hundreds of years before they are really gone in the earth.
Many places in China are polluted by e-waste. Guiyu in Guangdong Province is one of them. This town is named as “the e-waste capital of the world”. It has to deal with 1. 5 million kilograms of e-waste each year, from which it makes 75 million yuan. But it comes at a cost. Many of the poisons in e-waste find their way into the environment. Plastic is burned outdoors and chemical water is poured into rivers. Greenpeace, an environmental group, has found the air, the earth and the rivers in Guiyu badly polluted. The Chinese government wants the country to develop, but in a way that doesn't do harm to the environment and people's life. This year, China passed a new environmental protection law, the strictest one we have ever had. Computer companies like Lenovo and Dell will be asked to take back their old computers. This is because the companies that make computers know best how to deal with them safely. Hopefully, the problem with e-waste will be solved in the near future.

A good joke can be the hardest thing to understand when studying a foreign language.
There’s more to learn understanding a joke in a foreign language than understanding vocabulary and grammar.
Being able to understand local jokes is often seen as an ice-breaker for a language learner who wants to build friendships with native speakers.
“I always felt that humor was a ceiling (上限) that I could never break through,” said Hannah Ashley, who once studied Spanish in Madrid. “I could never speak to people on the same level as I would speak to a native English speaker. I almost came across as quite a boring person because all I could talk about was facts. ”
In fact, most of the time, jokes are only funny for people who share a cultural background or understand humor in the same way.
Chinese-American comedian (喜剧演员) Joe Wong (Huang Xi) found this out first-hand (亲身经历). He had achieved great success doing stand-up comedy (美式单口相声) in the US, but when he returned to China in 2008 for his first live show in Beijing, he discovered that his humor didn’t translate. People didn’t think his Chinese jokes were as funny as his English ones.
In Australia, many foreigners find understanding jokes about sports to be the biggest headache. “The hardest jokes are related to rugby (橄榄球) because I know nothing about rugby,” said Melody Cao, who was once a student in Australia. “When I heard jokes I didn’t get, I just laughed along. ”
In the other two major English-speaking countries, the sense of humor is also different. British comedian Simon Pegg believes that while British people use irony (讽刺)-basically, saying something they don’t mean to make a joke-every day, people in the US don’t see the point of using it so often. “British jokes tend to (倾向于) be more subtle (不易察觉) and dark, while American jokes are direct with their meanings, a bit like Americans themselves,” he wrote in a newspaper.
76. By using the underlined sentence, the writer means that _______.
A. you need to learn about a culture to understand its jokes
B. local jokes can help you to understand the local culture better
C. making jokes can help you form friendships with native speakers
D. understanding jokes requires excellence in vocabulary and grammar
77. What can we guess about Hannah Ashley? _______
A. She feels confident in using Spanish.
B. She believes that it’s better to tell the facts than jokes.
C. She thinks that Spanish people do not have much of a sense of humor.
D. Not being able to understand their humor makes her seem boring to Spanish people.
78. Joe Wong is used as an example to _______.
A. prove that it can be difficult to translate jokes
B. show that there are cultural differences in humor
C. show that your language ability influences your sense of humor
D. suggest that bilingual people (双语者) have no problems making people laugh
79. What are American jokes like? _______
A. Ironic. B. Subtle. C. Direct. D. Dark.
80. From the article, we can learn that _______.
A. Americans might not be able to enjoy British jokes
B. British people’s dark jokes often make people uncomfortable
C. English native speakers can all understand English jokes easily
D. jokes about sports are the most difficult ones for foreign people
