Two weeks ago, I had an amazing trip to my friend’s house in Serawai. Serawai is the name of a sub-district in Sintang Regency, Indonesia.
At that time, I was warmly welcomed by peaceful green yard. My trip was full of unforgettable moments: great people, delicious food, and new cultures. However, what left a remarkable impression on me was meeting up with my friend’s dad, Fx. Ngawan. He is now working as an education supervisor in Sintang Regency.
At our first encounter, he looked like a typical Dayaknese man with dark skin. As he mentioned that he used to be an English teacher, we discovered we were a match! I am an English teacher myself. More importantly, he is a language enthusiast and a hyperpolyglot(超级多语者). During the talk, we often switched from one language to the other such as Indonesian, English, Javanese to Ahe. He is now fluent in at least 15 languages and most of them are local languages.
When he was assigned to be a teacher and education supervisor, he had to go all the way from Serawai sub-district to Sintang Regency by motorcycle, riding about 170km by motorcycle. The trip could take six hours if the day was bright and sunny. However, it was not uncommon for him to spend three to seven days for the journey if the raining season came. Therefore, he had to stop at some villages if he couldn’t continue the trip and meet up with people with so many different languages along the way. So, whenever he stopped in a particular village, he learned a different language. For him, learning languages helped him to connect with people.
In our last talk, he highlighted the importance of learning languages. He hopes that the younger generation in Indonesiastart realizing that language is the gate to open up so many opportunities. Local languages are on the brink of disappearance because more people are leaving it behind. When people stop speaking the languages, the knowledge and culture from that language will also disappear.

    24. Which of the following impressed the author most?
    A. Peaceful green yard. B. Delicious food.
    C. Great people. D. Fx. Ngawan.
    25. How was Ngawan’s motorcycle trip?
    A. Difficult. B. Instructive. C. Exciting. D. Interesting.
    26. What benefit did Ngawan get in his long trip?
    A. He got enough rest. B. He learned some languages.
    C. He did much exercise. D. He made many friends.
    27. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
    A. Learning languages isn’t an easy job.
    B. Young people don’t grasp opportunities.
    C. Local languages are being more important.
    D. Languages and culture are closely related.

    C
Many of the New World supermarkets in New Zealand are letting their fruits and vegetables go packaging-free. In an innovative project pioneered by the New World supermarket located at Bishopdale in Christchurch, this change has led to an amazing increase in sales according to The New Zealand Herald. “We monitor them year on year and after we introduced the idea, we noticed sales of spring onions, for example, had increased by 300 percent,” Bishopdale’s owner Nigel Bond told NZ Herald. “There may have been other factors at play, but we noticed similar increases in other vegetables.” Bond explained, “When we first set up the new shelving, our customers were blown away. It reminded me of when I was a kid going to the fruiterer with my Dad, you could smell the fresh oranges and spring onions. By wrapping products in plastic, we sanitize and keep people away from this experience; it was a huge regret for us.”
This new project is part of the movement to do away with all single-use plastic packaging. There are actually government regulations that went into effect on July 1, 2019 for a phase out(强制逐步淘汰) of plastic bags by all retailers. Plastics take up as much as 20 percent of New Zealand’s landfill space to 252,000 tons per year.
The idea for the unwrapped produce came from Bond. He went on a study tour in the US and was impressed by the sales at Whole Foods. Then he spoke to growers and suppliers who were more than happy to look at different ways to provide produce without the plastic packaging.
Now, most of the produce is plastic-free but some items — including grapes and some tomatoes — still come wrapped in plastic. Nine New World supermarkets in the South Island have followed the Bishopdale’s stores example. And New World is testing another new way to BYO(=bring your own) containers for the meat and seafood departments. All of this is a part of the supermarket chain commitment to sustainable practices.

    28. What’s the result of making vegetables go packaging-free?
    A. An innovative project was carried out.
    B. More vegetables have been sold.
    C. Nigel Bond monitored sales stricter.
    D. Other factors were found to play the role.
    29. Which of the following is the content of regulations going into effect in 2019?
    A. Not using all single-use plastic packaging.
    B. Limiting the development of retailers.
    C. Stopping using plastic bags gradually.
    D. Building more New Zealand’s landfill space.
    30. What made Bond have the idea for the unwrapped produce?
    A. Whole Foods’ sales.
    B. His study in the college.
    C. His impression from work.
    D. Growers and suppliers’ requirements.
    31. What can be the suitable title for the text?
    A. New World’s Fruits and Vegetables Going Packaging-Free
    B. New Zealand’s Supermarkets Calling for Environmental Protection
    C. New Zealand’s Contribution to Reducing the Use of Plastics
    D. New World’s Supermarkets’ New Ways to Promote Sales

Thirty years ago, Switzerland-based artist Klaus Littmann came across a great drawing, titled The Unending Attraction of Nature. The drawing, by Austrian artist and architect Max Peintner, displays a scene in which nature is so detached(分离) from the environment that it becomes just a small piece, preserved for amusement. Given that we are now losing 18.7 million acres of forests each year, Peintner’s drawing was prescient, to say the least.
“When I first saw the 1970/71 pencil drawing, I was fascinated. I knew that one day this work would be the starting point for a major art project in public space,” says Littmann.
Now, decades later, Littmann has achieved the vision with the installation(移植) of FOR FOREST: The Unending Attraction of Nature. The installation sets a native central European forest in the middle of Wörthersee Football Stadium in Klagenfurt. With nearly 300 trees planted, some weighing up to six tons each, it is Austria’s largest public art installation.
In the face of climate crisis and deforestation(毁林), FOR FOREST comes with a more pressing urgency. As explained in a statement about the installation: “In support of today’s most pressing issues on climate change and deforestation, FOR FOREST aims to challenge our understanding of nature and question its future. It seeks to become a memorial(纪念物), reminding us that nature, which we so often take for granted, may someday only be found in special spaces, as is already the case with animals in zoos.”
The actual creation of the manmade forest was managed by landscape architect Enzo Enea and his company, Enea Landscape Architecture. It includes many kinds of trees. Having opened on September 8, one can imagine it already attracting surprised and happy creatures to the field. Regretfully, the installation will be closed soon. In a short video about the work, Littman says his goal was never to make something that would last forever; rather, he says, “My goal is for this picture to remain in people’s head for a lifetime.”

    32. What does the underlined word “prescient” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
    A. Able to affect the future.
    B. Able to last long enough.
    C. Able to draw much attention.
    D. Able to know what will happen.
    33. Why is the drawing The Unending Attraction of Nature described?
    A. To show it is one of Littmann’s masterpieces.
    B. To emphasis it left a deep impression on Littmann.
    C. To indicate it’s the source of Littmann’s inspiration.
    D. To present it is an example of the nature-themed art.
    34. What is the significance of the installation?
    A. It seeks to become a memorial.
    B. It is friendly to the environment.
    C. It is Austria’s largest artistic work.
    D. It warns people of environmental issues.
    35. What can we know about the manmade forest according to the last paragraph?
    A. It was made and managed by Littman.
    B. It won’t last for a long time.
    C. It didn’t attract much interest.
    D. It includes some special animals.
