Children know that summer is probably the most fun of all seasons. However, experts say it is also the most dangerous, especially, for children aged 14 and under. In its first study of children’s safety in the US, the National Safe Kids Campaign (NSKC) found that nearly half of the injury-related (与受伤相关的) deaths (死亡) among children happened in summer.

Experts are not surprised by the study’s results. They always know summer is a dangerous season for children. During the summer, children are out of school and spend more time outdoors. They are more likely to get into an accident (事故) or be injured (受伤). “While we encourage (鼓励) children to be active and spend more time outdoors, they need to understand the importance of safety,” said Everett Koop, an expert of the NSKC

To help children stay safe, the NSKC started a “Make it a Safe Kids Summer” campaign during National Safe Kids Week, from May 5 through May 12. Here are some important summer safety tips from the NSKC:

    ●Always wear your seat belt.

●Wear a life jacket when on a boat or doing water sports.

    ●Obey all traffic rules.

    ●Don’t meet e-pals alone.

Broken bones: Take away clothing from the wound. Use an ice pack. Don’t move the hurt body part while waiting for the doctor to arrive.

    2022·北京西城·八年级统考期末)阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。

Diana was shopping in a busy store after work one evening. Just five minutes before closing time, she heard a shop worker saying, “Someone’s having a seizure (疾病突发)”.

Walking quickly towards the shop worker, Diana saw a shopper on the ground. She was lying on the floor, jerking uncontrollably (控制不住地抽搐). A small group of people crowded to help the woman and a shop worker called an ambulance.

Diana knew that she could use what she had learned from her first aid training to help as well.

“The seizure was very different from the way people usually move,” Diana said. “The woman’s movements were so powerful that her glasses flew off her face.”

Knowing it was important to keep the woman safe, one of the workers brought over a worker jacket and put it under the woman’s head so she wouldn’t hurt herself.

“The seizure probably lasted only a few minutes, but it seemed much longer while it was going on,” Diana said, “When the jerking stopped, a man helped turn the woman onto her side. I then tilted (倾斜) her head back to help her keep breathing (呼吸). After the seizure, the woman seemed not to be able to understand what we were saying and couldn’t speak. Luckily, I learned that this could happen after a seizure and it might take some time for people to get back to feeling like their normal selves. It was such a relief (宽慰) when she finally answered that she was OK.”

By this time, the ambulance was on its way, so the other shoppers who had helped left.

“As I was leaving, one of the store’s workers said, ‘Thank you for your kindness.’ I was very touched by her words, and I told her that I’d learned first aid in case something like this ever happened, and now it had,” Diana said, “Although the accident left me feeling very shaken, I was glad I knew what to do to help.”

2021·黑龙江齐齐哈尔·八年级统考期末)What should you do if there is a fire at school? Do you know how to protect yourself in a large crowd? Every year since 1996, on the last Monday of the last week in March, the National Day of Education on the Safety of Elementary and Middle School Students (全国中小学安全教育日) is held. This year it falls on March 28th. It offers us a chance to learn more about school safety.

A survey shows that the worst accidents are a result of stampedes (踩踏), fires and traffic. When facing an accident, the first and most important rule is to stay calm. But you should have different ways to deal with different accidents.

A stampede happens in a place where there is a large crowd. When students around you begin to push, stand still and try to hold on to something, or stay in a corner until the crowd leaves. If you fall down in a moving crowd, cover your head with both hands to protect yourself. Lean to one side, curl your body and bend your legs.

When there is a fire, you should follow the teachers’ instructions. Leave the classroom and use a piece of cloth to cover your mouth and nose so that you don’t breathe in smoke.

If you walk to school or go by bike, follow traffic rules. Wait for the green traffic light, and look left and right for cars before you cross the road.

Answer the questions according to what you read.

14When is the National Day of Education on the Safety of Elementary and Middle School Students this year?
