I was born in Peru, but I didn’t grow up there. I was adopted (领养) by an American family and grew up in the United States. After I went to the USA, I never went back to my hometown. When I was 11 years old, I first traveled there. I went on more than just a vacation. When in Peru, I wanted to know how the girls’ lives were, so I visited some orphan ages (孤儿院). One of the orphan ages I visited was in the hills of Cuzco, near my birthplace. The orphanage was really cold and dry there. The paint on the wall was falling off, and the girls were in poor health. When I returned home, I couldn’t get the girls out of my mind, and I really wanted to do something because I could have been one of those girls in that orphanage. I started a group called Peruvian Hearts to help them. Its goal was to offer orphans in Peru with education, clothing and food. In the first two years, Peruvian Hearts raised about $15,000 for the orphanage. It also bought a chicken chop (鸡舍) so that the girls could eat fresh eggs. More and more people are interested in my work. Last year, I won a prize which is given to kids and tens, and that makes a difference. From this experience, I learn that as long as we believe in ourselves and follow our heart, we can make a difference. And we can make the world a better place. |

A video of a girl dancing at the meat shop has becoming popular on the Internet. In the video, her mother is busy cutting up meat while the girl is lost in dancing.
The girl, 11 years old, is named Wu Gangyun. She lives in Naduo village of Yanshan county in Yunnan. Wu’s father is a truck driver and her mother runs a meat shop. (2022·吉林白城·八年级期末)One day, a poor boy who was selling things was so hungry that he found that he only had a cent left. So he decided to ask a meal at the next house. However, he just asked for a glass of water when a woman opened the door. She thought he looked hungry, so she brought him a glass of milk. He drank in slowly, and then asked “How much do I owe(欠) you?” “You don’t owe me anything,” she replied, “Mother has taught me never to accept pay for a kindness.”
Years later the woman needed an operation. The local doctors could do nothing. They finally sent her to a big city. Dr. Milton was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, he went to see her. He recognized her. At the same time, he decided to try his best to save her.
After hard work, the operation was successful. Dr. Milton asked the nurse to pass the bill(账单) to him. He wrote something on the side. The bill was sent to the woman’s room. She was afraid to open it because she didn’t have much money. To her surprise, she saw the words by Dr. Milton: “Paid in full with a glass of milk!”
