Video cameras are everywhere, such as schools, theaters and stores. But in recent years, they have entered our homes. Many parents set up cameras at home to watch their children’s online classes and homework. Are cameras really helpful? What do students think about it? Let’s look at two students’ opinions.
Kathy: Earlier last year, I liked to lie in bed and watch videos instead of studying. This influenced my study and made my grades worse. So my parents set up a camera to keep an eye on me. It worked. With the camera watching, I had to do my homework first and make plans for studying at home. When I was alone at home, the camera made me feel safe because I knew that my parents were watching on the other side. My grades improved after a year.
Jack: When I was in Grade 8, my parents set up a camera in my room. I really didn’t like it because I felt there were always eyes watching me. I felt so uncomfortable that I couldn’t sleep well at night. Knowing there was a camera around when my friends came to my home, they spoke quietly and carefully. We couldn’t play freely. I was sad. So I asked my parents to take the camera away. They agreed it as long as I promised to behave well. I feel happy and free now.
41.Kathy and Jack have different opinions about cameras.
42.Kathy’s parents set up a camera because Kathy’s grades became worse.

Many cultures have stories of talking trees that give advice as well as warnings to people. New research has found something amazing: it appears that plants can communicate after all.
It has been known for some time that plants use chemicals(化学物质)to communicate with each other. This happens when a bean plant gets attacked by insects(昆虫). The plant sends out a small number of chemicals from the leaves that are being eaten. This is like a warning, or a call for help, “I’m being attacked!” When another bean plant discovers this, it starts to send out its own, different chemicals. Some of these chemicals drive insects away. ____51____
More surprisingly, plants also use sound to communicate. People can’t hear these sounds, but plants are making them. Some plants make noises with their roots(根). ____52____ A chillli plant can tell if a neighboring plant is helpful, or unfriendly. Some trees make clicking noises when there is not enough water.
Most surprisingly of all, plants have an amazing system of communication that can connect nearly every plant in a forest. Scientists call this system the “wood wide web”. ____53____ The wood wide web is connected underground by fungi(菌类). This fungi network connects the roots of different plants to each other. Using the wood wide web, plants can share in formation and even food with each other. But just like our own Internet, the wood wide web has its own problems. ____54____ Perhaps one day scientists will learn how to create a “firewall” to help prevent these attacks.
Scientists are learning more every day about the secret ways in which plants talk to each other. ____55____ Maybe one day we will know enough about plant communication to be able to “talk” with them ourselves.
A.Plants can talk with each other through this.
B.They also “listen” to the noises from other plants.
C.Plants can steal food from each other, or attack other plants.
D.Who knows?
E.Scientists hope to learn more about this plant warning system, so that we can use it to grow crops in a better way.
F.It is in some ways similar to the Internet we use.

As is well known, saying “no” is not easy at all. But sometimes we have to learn to say “no”. To learn to say “no”, we have to first understand what’s stopping us about it. There are some common reasons why people find it hard to say “no”.
You want to help others. You are a kind soul (灵魂) at heart. You don’t want to turn the person away and you want to help when possible, even if it may take up your time.
Afraid of being rude. I was brought up under the idea that saying “no”, especially to people who are older, is rude. This thinking is common in Asian culture, where face-saving is important. It means not making others look bad or lose faces.
Wanting to be agreeable. At times, you find you are not in agreement. You don’t want to keep yourself away from the group, so you agree to do others’ requests.
Fear of conflict (冲突). The person might be angry if you refuse him. This might lead to an ugly conflict. ①Even if there isn’t, there might be disagreement which might lead to bad effects (影响) in the future.
Fear of losing opportunities. Sometimes, saying “no” means closing doors or losing opportunities. It may make you feel worried. For example, one of my friends was asked to work in another department in her company. Since she liked her team, she didn’t want to go. However, she didn’t want to say “no” as she felt it would affect her promotion (晋升) opportunities in the future.

A new research shows that women try 150 different hairstyles in their lifetime, including various cuts, colors and shapes. However, men settle(固定)on their favorite hairstyle after trying only 5 different cuts.
The study of 2,000 women has found that women visit the hairdresser five times a year on average, and about 100 like to try something different with each trip to the hairdresser. Almost half are willing to be experimental and change their hairs style.
Women are likely to go for two new styles and at least one color change every year between the ages of 15 and 65. The study found that 64 percent of women will change their hair simply because they are bored with their current(目前的)style. Nearly 12 percent will change their hair in order to look like a celebrity(名人)while 15 percent will change their style for a wedding. 13 percent of women would change their hairstyle after having a baby. Other reasons for trying a new hairstyle were birthdays.
However, men are not as troublesome as women. They only try five different hairstyles and then stick to their favorite one in their lifetime. Men usually stick with just one style because of its being convenient(68 percent)or being liked by their partner(10 percent).
The study of 2,000 men also noticed how celebrity hairstyles have the influence on them and what kind of haircuts would be more fashionable in their eyes. 400 of them admit they want to grow their hair longer to copy the likes of David Beckham and actor Brad Pitt, while 240 consider ①dying their hair grey, to keep up with fashion trends(潮流). Setting goals is very important for everyone. My goal is to lose weight for the sake of health. As I enter the middle high school, I often eat snacks or junk food which leads to the increase of my weight. What’s more, I often breathe heavily after running for a short while. To achieve the goal, I will go running for half an hour in the morning. And I will refuse to eat any junk food. Before going to bed, I will only eat vegetables or fruit. Now, I have made much progress in losing weight. I am sure I can achieve my goal.
