Think of somebody you really admire. You will probably find that their success didn’t come easily. As the “Father of Hybrid Rice(杂交水稻)”, Yuan Longping got over great difficulties and spent his whole life working to reduce world hunger and helping to feed the country with the largest population.
Wu Mengchao, the “Father of Chinese Hepatobiliary Surgery(肝胆外科)”, focused on saving people’s lives for nearly eighty years. He performed more than 16,000 operations during his life. Holding the surgeon’s knife for such a long time deformed his fingers, which are not in the shape of normal ones. Wu once said, “It would my greatest happiness if I could work at the operating table until my dying day.”
In 1969, in order to solve the problem of treating malaria(疟疾), Tu Youyou, the pharmacologist(药学家) took on the job as head of a research team. She and her teammates performed different kinds of experiments. However, the results were disappointing. Instead of giving up? They kept trying. Finally, in 1972, they made it! In 2015, at the age of 85, she received Nobel Prize.
Thomas Edison, the inventor of the light bulb(灯泡) believed that every failure was a step towards success. He once said, “If I find 10,000 ways something won’t work, I haven’t failed. I am not discouraged, because every wrong try is another step forward.”
Some people only became successful after their deaths. Not like Pablo Picasso who became famous and very rich during his lifetime, the artist Vincent van Gogh only sold one painting all through his life and that was to a friend. But he kept painting and he painted more than 2,000 artworks in the following ten years. Now his paintings are very popular and they sell for millions of pounds.

    Derek Redmond
It was the Olympic Games in Barcelona in 1992; the semi-final of the 400 metres. The sun was shining and the crowd were ready for a great race. The British athlete Derek Redmond was a top runner: he had a very good chance of winning a medal.
The race began. At first, Derek was running well. Then, after about 150 metres, he felt a pain in his leg. He fell down on one knee. He had a bad injury and couldn’t carry on. The other runners went past him and finished the race.
After about five seconds, Derek got up and started to run again, on one leg only. Some organizers tried to stop him but he kept going. The crowd stood up and started to clap. Then another man came onto the track—Derek’s father, Jim. His father put his arm around him and said, “Derek, you don’t have to do this.” Derek replied, Yes, I do. I have to finish.” And so together they walked the last 50 metres and crossed the line.
When he finally crossed the line, Derek was crying and 60, 000 people were cheering him.

It seems like people today are more easily offended than ever before.
If smoking in an elevator or talking in a movie theater were normal in the past, they are considered to be rude today. We used to be obliged to answer whatever questions a family elder asked, but now when a prying relative asks about our test grades or dream university — information that we’d rather keep to ourselves — we feel offended, even if they mean well.
The boundary between “politeness” and “rudeness” has changed over the years, especially among young people.
But this change doesn’t just go one way — things that used to be considered rude may also go across to the other side of the boundary. For example, to stand up for themselves, some youths may try to make statements by using phone cases printed with phrases like “Leave me alone” or “None of your business”. In their eyes, this is more like being independent than being rude.
“These phenomena involve rejecting previously moral order to ignore insults, recognize the good intentions of those who accidentally give offense, and be charitable toward those with whom we disagree,” wrote Time. “They suggest a new morality.”
And this fresh morality is introduced by a new group of people. According to The Economist, young people, or millennials, are “the best-educated generation ever”, which is why they tend to be more conscious about their privacy and personal space. They are also freer than previous generations, more eager to explore the world and refuse to be tied down by elders’ rules.
But there are, of course, people who think that millennials have gone too far to defend their own needs. An earlier Time article called millennials the “Me Me Me Generation”, saying that they are self-involved, less grateful and less tolerant of people.
But Lauren Martin, a lifestyle writer in the US, and a millennial herself, has a theory.
“Our generation is an anomaly (与众不同的事物),” she wrote on Elite Daily. “We refuse to do things their way, so they call us entitled. We refuse to sit in cubicles, so they call us spoiled. We refuse to follow their plans, so they call us stubborn. What they are slowly realizing, however, is we’re not lazy, stubborn or entitled. We just refuse to accept things as they’re given to us.”
16.What is the article mainly about?
A.Why people today are more easily offended.
B.The definition of “politeness” and “rudeness”.
C.The morality of millennials and some views on it.
D.Key characteristics of the millennial generation.
17.What can we conclude from the first four paragraphs?
A.A prying relative always makes people feel offended.
B.Many young people can’t tell politeness from rudeness.
C.Young people today don’t care what people think of them.
D.Traditional morality has been rejected by some.
18.According to The Economist, millennials ______.
    a. are more curious about the outside world
    b. are less thankful and understanding
    c. are more concerned about their privacy
    d. are more likely to challenge elders’ rules
    e. enjoy more freedom and are self-involved
    A.a, b, c B.a, c, d C.b, d, e D.c, d, e
19.What does Lauren Martin think of millennials?
A.They are too stubborn to listen to others.
B.They cannot get along well with others.
C.They have their own ways of viewing things.
D.They should adjust their way to defend their own needs.

More than a third of Americans don’t get enough sleep. That may not seem like a big deal, but being short of sleep—even by just an hour—can have serious effects on your health, and the economy.
Every year, not getting enough sleep costs the U.S. economy up to $ 411 billion, according to a new report from the not-for-profit research group RAND Europe.
The researchers wanted to look at how shortened sleep—which means getting a sleep of less than 7 hours a night—affects the economy of five different countries: the U.S., the UK, Germany, Japan and Canada. With survey results from the National Sleep Foundation, they found three effects: death, since lack(缺乏) of sleep has been connected to about half of the leading causes of death in the U.S.; low productivity(生产力), since sleepy workers are less productive and more likely not to show up; and poor development skills, which affect lifetime earnings.
“How would those countries look if the number of people who sleep less than a certain amount of time actually improved?” wondered Marco Hafner, a research leader at RAND Europe and the report’s main author.
The U.S. loses the most from its sleepy people. The researchers said that workers with shortened sleep cost the country’s economy about $ 411 billion a year, about 2% of the GDP. Japan was the second most affected, losing about the same of its GDP followed by Germany and the UK. Canada had the best sleepers, but still lost 1.4% of its GDP to lack of sleep. The study authors also found marked health effects from lack of sleep. Sleeping about six hours a night is connected to a 7% higher risk of death, and sleeping less than six hours is connected to a 13% higher risk. “It’s not a small problem,” Hafner says. “It seems to be not only a public health problem, but also an economic problem.”
24.How much does lack of sleep probably cost the America economy every month on average?
    A.More than $ 411 billion. B.Less than $ 41l thousand.
    C.About $ 35 thousand. D.About $ 35 billion.
25.What effect is mentioned when workers are short of sleep according to Paragraph 3?
A.It may affect the health of the workers.
B.It may affect the creativity of the workers.
C.it may affect the education of the workers.
D.It may affect the communication skills of the workers.
26.What can we know from Paragraph 5?
A.The UK loses the least in economy.
B.Japan loses the most because of its sleepy people.
C.Lack of sleep has become an important economic problem.
D.Lack of sleep in workers has not produced noticeable effects.
27.Where can we find this text most probably?

There were smiling children all the way. Clearly they knew at what time the train passed their homes and they made it their business to stand along the railway, wave to complete strangers and cheer them up as they rushed towards Penang. Often whole families stood outside their homes and waved and smiled as if those on the trains were their favorite relatives. These are the simple village people of Malaysia. I was moved.
I had always traveled to Malaysia by plane or car, so this was the first time I was on a train. I did not particularly (特别) relish the long train journey and had bought along a dozen magazines to read and reread. I looked about the train. There was not one familiar (熟悉的) face. I sighed and sat down to read my Economics.
It was not long before the train was across the Causeway and in Malaysia. Johor Bahru was just another city like Singapore, so I was tired of looking at the crowds of people as they hurried past. As we went beyond the city, I watched the straight rows of rubber trees and miles and miles of green. Then the first village came into sight. Immediately I came alive; I decided to wave back.
From then on my journey became interesting. I threw my magazines into the waste basket and decided to join in Malaysian life. Then everything came alive. The mountains seemed to speak to me. Even the trees were smiling. I stared at everything as if I was looking at it for the first time.
The day passed fast and I even forgot to have my lunch until I felt hungry. I looked at my watch and was surprised that it was 3: 00 pm. Soon the train pulled up at Butterworth. I looked at the people all around me. They all looked beautiful. When my uncle arrived with a smile, I threw my arms around him to give him a warm hug. I had never done this before. He seemed surprised and then his weather-beaten face warmed up with a huge smile. We walked arm in arm to his car.
I looked forward to the return journey.

I have to finish.” And so together they wallked the last 50 metres and crossed the line.”(然后,另一个人来到赛道上,Derek的父亲Jim。

I have to finish.” And so together they wallked the last 50 metres and crossed the line.”(然后,另一个人来到赛道上,Derek的父亲Jim。他的父亲搂着他说:“Derek,你不必这样做。”Derek回答:“是的,我需要。我必须完成。”于是,他们一起在最后50米处筑墙,越过了这条线。) 可知,Derek在腿受伤时仍然坚持跑完全程。根据Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner部分第三段“K2 was now a very sad place for her, and she thought perhaps she would never climb the mountain.”(K2现在对她来说是一个非常悲伤的地方,她想也许她永远不会爬上这座山。)和最后一段“So in August 2011 she went back to Nepal and K2, and tried again.
