Beijing’s Forbidden City is a place full of wonder. From its thousands of rooms to its many beautiful artifacts (工艺品), there’s no wonder it’s one of China’s most popular tourist destinations.
But even more than 600 years after it was built, it’s still managing to serve up surprises.
Since it was built during the Ming Dynasty, it’s estimated that the Forbidden City has survived more than 200 earthquakes.
And while most structures aren’t made to survive natural disasters, let alone ones built hundreds of years ago, it seems that the Forbidden City was built to withstand anything.
A recent television documentary by UK broadcaster Channel 4 explored the skills of the ancient building’s designers. A group of Chinese carpenters and engineers were shown building a model of one of the Forbidden City’s palaces, at one fifth of the size.
To show how strong ancient Chinese architecture really is, the model was put to the test. It was subjected to an artificial earthquake of 9.5 on the Richter scale equal to the largest ever recorded quake and survived. Instead of falling apart, the model was just moved gently during the test.
According to experts, the answer to the Forbidden City’s strength, as well as other ancient Chinese structures’, lies in dougong-a centuries-old building method invented in China.
This is the name for special holders on buildings. Despite being held together without any nails or glue, the holders are perfect at keeping structures together when the weather gets rough.
“Dougong design is an important earthquake-proof feature of classical Chinese structures because the framework changes in shape when under pressure, much like the shock absorbers (减震器) of a car, ”according to Chinese National Geography.
“Ancient Chinese craftsmen created structures that were both enduring and aesthetically (在美学方面) pleasing[using dougong], revealing their advanced understanding of mathematics, architecture, materials, and structural science.”
The Forbidden City draws visitors because of its rich history and cultural significance, but perhaps it should add one more thing to its list of attractions: earthquake shelter.

Working robots are typically big, simple and strong. They are large preprogrammed units working in dangerous jobs. But the idea of putting “cobots” which work in harmony with humans into use has become a reality and has changed robotic products worldwide.
Cobots include robots made of tough materials that provide support for the disabled and software-based assistants for home of online services. With their operating software updated from the Internet, these helpers will become an extension of mobile devices.
Most industrial robots are not designed to deal with unpredictable human jobs. However, by reducing robots down to desktop size and planting them with AI, the next generation of cobots will learn from us and cooperate with us better. Lightweight cobots can work in less space and share themselves with people rather than being caged off. Decreasing costs for robotic systems make them more suitable for small businesses, and their easy set-up makes them simple to deploy. Typical industrial uses for cobots include packing and machine tending. More detailed uses include cleaning dirty samples, picking plants, making tea and coffee and so on.
Still, experts thought that introducing robots would lead to job losses. Some people said that 20 million industrial jobs would be lost worldwide by 2030.Actually,it was not the case. What big companies such as Germany’s Mercedes-Benz discovered was that robots alone were not intelligent enough to keep pace with the demand for special products, which still depends on a large number of skilled staff to control and push the whole progress.
“Unplanned changes to production and safer interaction with humans will then require a step change in robot improvements. It has become necessary to use the new generation of cobots in people’s daily life, and cooperation should be considered as an applicable strategy. When we make people and machines cooperate, we can produce many more products on one production line,” said Markus Schaefer, head of production planning.
5.What can we know about cobots from Paragraph 2?
A.They can do many boring tasks for people. B.They are still at the experimental stage.
C.They are designed to serve the injured. D.They can meet a variety of needs in daily life.
6.Which of the following words can best describe the newly designed cobots?
A.Complex but creative. B.High-cost but useful.
C.Affordable and convenient. D.Small-sized and energy-saving.

A.Cobots attract a large number of buyers.
B.Cobots may cause rising unemployment.
C.Cobots bring both benefits and disadvantages.
D.Cobots promoting human-robot cooperation is a trend.
8.What is the purpose of the text?
A.To stress the influence of cobots.
B.To discuss the development of cobots.

Harper Lee (1926-2016) was an American novelist widely known for To Kill a Mockingbird (published in 1960), which won the 1961 Pulitzer Prize and has become a classic of modern American literature. The 1962 film adaptation starring Gregory Peck won three Academy Awards.
For decades, the book was Lee’s only major work of published fiction, but it was hugely influential for generations of US readers. It has sold more than 10 million copies, and is one of the most widely taught novels in US schools. In 2007 Lee was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her contribution to literature.
Lee wanted to live a simple life and was never comfortable with the attention the novel won her, and she practically disappeared from public life after it appeared. The world, however, continued waiting for a new novel from her, and on occasion she hinted that she had a story in progress.
In 2015, a book did come out. Go Set a Watchman was more of a first draft, featuring Scout, the young girl who was the main character of To Kill a Mockingbird. Go Set a Watchman tells a story of Scout as an adult. Accusations arose that the 89-year old Lee was not able to consent to (赞成) the manuscript's release, and that various patties had signed on her behalf.
Though Lee moved in 1949 to New York, she spent many years guarding her privacy in Monroeville, which served as clear inspiration for the setting in To Kill a Mockingbird.
In 2007, Lee suffered a stroke, but recovered and later settled in Monroeville permanently to care for her sister, Alice, who died in 2014. She was said to eat breakfast every morning at the same fast-food spot, and was friendly with her neighbors. Like the countless Americans knowing her only through her work, they will undoubtedly miss her.

Apples, oranges and other fruit should be kept in the fridge to last long, new supermarket labels will say, in a move which could tell the end of the traditional fruit bowl. The labels will form part of the Government-backed guidance to help consumers reduce the amount of food they throw by changing advice on packs of supermarket food.
Under the plan supermarkets will introduce a new “Little Blue Fridge” sign for food which should be kept chilled(冷藏), or benefit from being kept in the fridge to prevent it going off. The sign will appear on much food which is not usually kept in the fridge. For example the Waste and Resources Action Program (WRAP) pointed out that apples, oranges and pears, which are usually kept in a fruit bowl, should in fact be stored in the fridge.
Dr. Andrew Parry, a special advisor on food and drink, said, “Most fresh fruit and vegetables will keep fresher for longer if kept in their packaging and in the fridge. Generally a good way to manage fruit at home is to take out enough into the fruit bowl—if you prefer it at room temperature; but use your fridge as cold storage for the majority. This will give you more time to enjoy your food, and help cut down on waste.”
Environment Minister Thérèse Coffey said, “We know that confusing(难以理解的) labels can lead to food waste by suggesting that edible items need to be thrown away sooner. This new guidance will make packaging much clearer for consumers, saving them money and reducing waste. I encourage all food businesses, large and small, to use this guidance to help them put the right date mark on food and help to guide people on the freezing products which are crucial(至关重要的)to reducing the amount of edible food thrown away.”
Heather Hancock, chairman at the Food Standards Agency, said, “I think this clear guidance can help deal with food waste, without damaging the safety of food. It will help businesses supply food that is properly described and stored, and safely provided to consumers.”
16.According to the text, what is in line with the goal of the Government-backed guidance?
A.It encourages business. B.It lowers goods prices.
C.It helps cut down on waste. D.It improves product quality.
17.What’s the second paragraph mainly about?

For a few seconds on a sunny afternoon last April, renewables broke a record for California’s main electric network, providing enough power to supply 94.5% of demand. The moment was praised as a milestone on the path to decarbonisation(脱碳).But what happens when the sunsets and the winds stop?
Handling the varied power production of renewables will require cheap storage for hours or even days at a time. New types of iron-based batteries might be up to the task.
Many firms are engaged in developing these kinds of batteries. Oregon- based ESS,whose batteries can store energy for between four and twelve hours, launched its first network-scale projects in 2021.Massachusetts-based Form Energy, which raised $ 240 million in 2021,has batteries that store power for up to 100 hours. Its first installation will be a one-megawatt(兆瓦)pilot plant in Minnesota, planned to be completed in 2023.
Both companies rely on batteries that use iron, one of the most abundant materials on the planet. This means that their offerings could eventually be cheaper than other network storage candidates. Form says its batteries could eventually cost just $ 20 per kilowatt-hour,lower than even optimistic predictions for lithium-ion(锂离子)batteries in the next several decades.
There are still challenges to address:iron batteries typically have low efficiency, meaning a good part of the energy that’s put into them can’t be recovered. Unwanted side reactions can also degrade them over time. But if iron-based batteries can be applied widely,at a low enough cost, they could help power more of the world with renewable energy.

“Everything happens for the best.” My mother said whenever things weren’t going my way.” Don’t worry. One day your luck will change.”
Mother was right, as I discovered after I had finished my college education. I had decided to try for a job in a radio station. One day, I wanted to host a sports program. I went to Chicago and knocked at the door of every station. But I got turned down every time. In one station, a kind lady said my problem was that I hadn’t got enough experience. “Get some work in a small station and work your way up,” she said.
In one station, a kind lady said my problem was that I hadn’t got enough experience. “Get some work in a small station and work your way up,” she said.
I went back home. I couldn’t get a job there, either. Then my dad told me a businessman had opened a store and needed someone to help him. But again, I didn’t get the job.
I felt really down. “Your luck will change,” Mon said to me. Dad lent me the car to help me to look for my job. I tried another radio station in Iowa. But the owner, a nice man, told me he had already had someone.
As I left his office, I asked, “How can someone be a sports announcer if he can’t get a job in a radio station?”
I was waiting for the lift when I heard the man called, “What did you mean? Do you know anything about football?” He put me in front of a microphone and asked me to try to imagine that I was giving my opinion on a football game. I succeeded.
On my way home, Mom’s words came back to me, “One day your luck will change, Son. And when it happens, you’ll feel good because of all the hard work you have done.” At that moment I knew just what she meant.

In 2007 Lee was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her contribution to literature.(几十年来,这本书是李出版的唯一一部主要小说作品,但它对几代美国读者产生了巨大的影响。
根据第三段中“Lee wanted to live a simple life and was never comfortable with the attention the novel won her, and she practically disappeared from public life after it appeared.(李想过简单的生活,对小说给她带来的关注感到不安,小说出版后,她几乎消失在公众生活中)”可知,哈珀·李在她的第一部小说出版后就从公众生活中消失,是因为她不想被打扰。故选C项。
根据第四段中“Go Set a Watchman was more of a first draft, featuring Scout, the young girl who was the main character of To Kill a Mockingbird. Go Set a Watchman tells a story of Scout as an adult.(《设立守望者》更像是初稿,主角是《杀死一只知更鸟》的主角小女孩斯考特。《设立守望者》讲述了斯各特成年后的故事)”可知,从文本中,我们知道哈珀·李的《设立守望者》延续了她早期的故事。故选A项。
根据最后一段中“Like the countless Americans knowing her only through her work, they will undoubtedly miss her.(就像无数美国人只通过她的作品了解她一样,他们无疑会想念她)”可知,从最后一段可以推断出哈珀·李一定会被铭记。故选D项。

根据第二段中“Under the plan supermarkets will introduce a new ‘Little Blue Fridge’ sign for food which should be kept chilled(冷藏), or benefit from being kept in the fridge to prevent it going off. (根据该计划,超市将推出一个新的‘蓝色小冰箱’标志,用于存放需要冷藏的食物,或存放于冰箱中防止变质的食物。)”可知,本段主要讲超市对政府支持的指导的反应。故选D项。
18.词句猜测题。划线词句后文“I encourage all food businesses, large and small, to use this guidance to help them put the right date mark on food and help to guide people on the freezing products which are crucial(至关重要的)to reducing the amount of edible food thrown away. (我鼓励所有大大小小的食品企业使用这一指南,帮助他们在食品上贴上正确的日期标记,并帮助指导人们使用冷冻产品,这对减少可食用食品的扔掉至关重要。)”说明这样做的目的是减少可食用食品的被扔掉,从而推知划线词句“We know that confusing(难以理解的) labels can lead to food waste by suggesting that edible items need to be thrown away sooner. (我们知道,混淆标签会导致食物浪费,因为它暗示edible商品需要尽快扔掉。)”其中词汇意思应为“可食用的”。故选A项。
根据最后一段中Heather Hancock所说“I think this clear guidance can help deal with food waste, without damaging the safety of food. It will help businesses supply food that is properly described and stored, and safely provided to consumers. New types of iron-based batteries might be up to the task.(处理可再生能源的各种电力生产将需要廉价的存储,一次存储几个小时甚至几天。新型铁基电池或许可以胜任这项任务。)”可知,作者在第一段介绍新能源的目的是为了引入话题,介绍文章的主题“铁基电池”。故选A项。
根据文章第三段“Oregon- based ESS,whose batteries can store energy for between four and twelve hours, launched its first network-scale projects in 2021.Massachusetts-based Form Energy, which raised $ 240 million in 2021,has batteries that store power for up to 100 hours.(总部位于俄勒冈州的ESS的电池可以储存4到12小时的能量,于2021年启动了第一个网络规模的项目。总部位于马萨诸塞州的Form Energy公司于2021年筹集了2.4亿美元,其电池可储存电量长达100小时。)”可知,作者主要是通过举两个例子来说明铁基电池的发展,所以作者是通过举例子来展开第三段的。故选C项。
22.细节理解题。根据文章最后一段“But if iron-based batteries can be applied widely,at a low enough cost, they could help power more of the world with renewable energy.(但如果铁基电池能够以足够低的成本广泛应用,它们可以帮助世界上更多的人使用可再生能源。)”
分析全文内容再根据文章最后一段“There are still challenges to address:iron batteries typically have low efficiency, meaning a good part of the energy that’s put into them can’t be recovered.(目前仍有一些挑战需要解决:铁电池的效率通常很低,这意味着投入其中的很大一部分能量无法回收。)”
