Laughing Matters
Making people laugh connects us to one another. But what are laughing matters related to? For me, they are about personal life stories and experiences. Life will always change, and therefore laughing matters vary accordingly. While we may not have the same experiences, everyone can relate to observations on life, family, and the varieties of behavior we all encounter every day as we go about life.
Laughing matters are dedicated to making laughter a part of daily life and building a healthier and less stressful outlook. It can end tense situations. It always breaks the ice and brings people together. At home, it brings the family closer. A friend once told me how his dad collected jokes in a box and wrote them down on cards so he wouldn’t forget them and then told jokes at the dinner table. I could relate to that. My older brother used to bring home joke books and read them to me when I was 10 or 11 years old, which had a great impact on me.
Great comedians view life in different ways. Some of them can tell a relatable story about life and it will be funny, reminding the audience of similar situations and getting huge laughs. Others will look at a similar observation in life and tell a very different story from a very different angle with a very different delivery. The best of them keep working it out until they find the humor that suits them and strikes the right string and, hopefully, the laughter string of an audience.
People will always relate to the human story with all its challenges. One good thing about life is that it changes and develops. Life itself never gets old and is always feeding a laugh. As a result, comedians are constantly pushing the envelope because what the previous generation found funny becomes foreign to the new generation. As comedy adjusts to life changes, the edge keeps moving as well. That’s what time does to comedy. And now with a whole new generation the challenge is the same. Humorists must keep pushing that envelope, and we will.
1.For the author, what are laughing matters about? (不多于8个单词)
2.How can the best comedians make people laugh? (不多于11个单词)
3.Why does comedy need to change? (不多于13个单词)
4.Based on your personal experience, does humor help you in your life? Why or why not? (单词数不限)

For many people, one of the best examples of creative genius was Albert Einstein, the physicist who came up with the Theory of Relativity (相对论). However, what they don’t know is that Einstein had specific techniques he used to develop his ability to think creatively and freely.
The main approach Einstein took was “possibility thinking”. It means getting away from our familiar thoughts and trying to imagine many other possible things, no matter how unbelievable they might seem. Einstein had a special technique to do this, and he called it “the thought experiment”, which is simply an experiment you do inside your own head. The most famous thought experiment is the one Einstein used to get himself on the path towards the Theory of Relativity. Einstein was interested in light and the speed of light and its relationship to time, and he often imagined himself riding on a line of sunlight. He said using his imagination like this allowed him to understand some of the relationships between light and time.
Basically, how we experience time depends on where we are and what we are doing. Einstein explained it as follows: “When you’re talking to a pretty girl, an hour seems like a minute. If you sit on a hot fire, a minute seems like an hour. That’s relativity.” But in order to make possibility thinking effective, we have to give ourselves opportunities to practice it. Many people say their “thinking time” is when they’re taking a bath, or when they’re on the bus to work or school. But Einstein believed it’s important to devote certain time every day to “creative thinking”: whatever problem or idea it is that interests you, set aside some time every day to thinking about it.
Einstein also believed in thinking about a problem for a long time and not giving up: as he once said, “I think and think for months and years. Ninety-nine times, the conclusion is false. The hundredth time I am right.”
5.How did Einstein get himself on the path towards the Theory of Relativity?
6.According to this passage, what does “the relativity of time” mean?
7.What did Einstein believe in as being important for thinking?
8.What do you think of “creative thinking”? Explain why. (In about 40 words)

We often hear about the negative aspects of anxiety, but could there be any advantages or benefits that come from living with anxiety? Anxiety is a feeling that is often characterized by intense fear and worry.
Many individuals with anxiety describe it as a feeling of nervousness and fear that can be distracting and all-consuming. It is typically experienced on many levels, affecting one’s emotions and leading to uncomfortable physical sensations, and negative thoughts. However, have you ever considered some of the possible positive effects that may come with having anxiety? Scientists have learned that some degree of stress or anxiety isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Good stress, something now referred to as eustress, keeps us motivated and excited about life. It appears that some degree of anxiety may have similar “silver linings”.
Anxiety may be just the warning sign you need to bring awareness to your current situation and make some necessary changes in your life. For example, you may find that you have a friendship that is no longer working, or perhaps your job is causing a great deal of stress. Your anxiety can be difficult to manage, but exploring and coping with your anxiety can be a real opportunity for self-growth.
Anxiety may help you feel more motivated and prepared when faced with challenges. Research has shown that students and athletes who experienced some anxiety actually performed better on tests or in competitive sports. For instance, perhaps your anxiety assists you in putting extra effort into work or personal tasks, making a good impression, or moving towards your goals.
People who have dealt with anxiety may be more sympathetic and understanding to the problems that others face. Having gone through personal struggles yourself, you may be more sensitive, loving, and accepting when friends and family members are dealing with personal challenges.
Even though there can be some potential benefits to experiencing anxiety, it is worthwhile to point that it can also become a real hindrance to many aspects of your life. If anxiety is preventing you from living the life you desire, then it may be time to get professional help.
9.What is anxiety according to the passage?
10.What can eustress do to us?
11.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
Research has shown that students with some anxiety are sure to perform worse on tests.
12.How will you deal with anxiety in your life? (In about 40 words)

While most spiders hunt alone, there are a few hundred species of social spiders that live in colonies. A.studiosus is one of them. Up to 50 individuals gather together to spin large collective webs, which catch larger prey than each spider could trap on its own.
All the colony members look the same, but they don’t all behave in the same way. The females can be aggressive or docile (温驯的). It’s surprisingly easy to realize their personalities—just put two of them in a small box overnight and check on them the next morning. If they’re both docile, they will have built a joint web in one corner of the box. If one of them is aggressive, the pair will be at opposite corners.
Colin Wright from the University of Pittsburgh has now found that these personality types do different jobs within the web, creating a natural division of labor. They’re a little like ants, where small workers clean and look for food, and big soldiers guard and defend. But unlike these insects, the social spiders don’t have castes (社会阶层) with different builds. Instead, their roles are defined by their personalities.
When Wright’s team first started studying A.studiosus, they couldn’t work out what the docile spiders did. They didn’t seem to repair webs, keep enemies away, or catch prey. But when the researchers checked the fates of colonies in the wild, they found that those with a mix of docile and aggressive members were more likely to survive than those with just a single type. The docile members were clearly doing something important.
It turns out that they act as the colony’s babysitters. They spend most of their time standing watching over the eggs, or directly feeding the youngsters by regurgitating (反刍) food—just like a mother bird might. Meanwhile, the aggressive spiders generally avoid these tasks; instead, they spend most of their time building the web, catching prey, and defending their colonies. Compared to the docile spiders, the aggressive ones are better at those tasks, because the docile females rarely respond to enemies—and when they do respond, they do so slowly.
For now, it’s not clear why the spiders naturally fall into their respective careers, or even what drives their different personalities in the first place. The team are now trying to answer these questions. In the meantime, Wright suggests that biologists should pay more attention to personality types, when trying to understand how animal societies work.
13.According to the passage, what are the two personality types of female A.studiosus?
14.What are the aggressive female spiders mainly responsible for?
15.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
ØIn an A.studiosus colony, the division of labor is based on the different builds of the spiders.
16.Do you think personality traits influence human career choices? Why or why not? (In about 40 words)

How AI Will Impact the Future of Work and Life
AI, or artificial intelligence, seems to be on the tip of everyone’s tongue these days. While I’ve been aware of this major trend in tech development for a while, I’ve noticed AI appearing more and more as one of the most in-demand areas of expertise for job seekers.
I’m sure that for many of us, the term “AI” conjures up sci-fi fantasies or fear about robots taking over the world. The depictions of AI in the media have run the gamut, and while no one can predict exactly how it will evolve in the future, the current trends and developments paint a much different picture of how AI will become part of our lives.
In reality, AI is already at work all around us, impacting everything from our search results, to our online dating prospects, to the way we shop. Data shows that the use of AI in many sectors of business has grown by 270% over the last four years.
But what will AI mean for the future of work? As computers and technology have evolved, this has been one of the most pressing questions. As with many technological developments throughout history, the advancement of artificial intelligence has created fears that human workers will become obsolete.
The reality is probably a lot less dire, but maybe even more complicated.
What is AI?
Before we do a deep dive on the ways in which AI will impact the future of work, it’s important to start simple: what is AI? A straightforward definition from Britannica states that artificial intelligence is “the ability of a digital computer or computer-controlled robot to perform tasks commonly associated with intelligent beings.”
“AI” has become a catchall term to describe any advancements in computing, systems and technology in which computer programs can perform tasks or solve problems that require the kind of reason we associate with human intelligence, even learning from past processes.
This ability to learn is a key component of AI. Algorithms, like the dreaded Facebook algorithm that replaced all our friends with sponsored content, are often associated with AI.
AI will probably not make human workers obsolete, at least not for a long time.
17.According to the passage, what is “AI”?
________________
18.How does AI affect our life?

19.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
No one can predict exactly how AI will develop in the future, and the key component of it has not been found.

One of the basic expectations the public have of doctors is honesty. But what would you think if I told you that research has shown that 70 percent of doctors admitted to lying to their patients? It is inexcusable, surely? Extremely unprofessional and uncaring; a clear break of the doctor-patient relationship. Some of the lies told included reassuring patients that their wives or husbands were still alive, when in fact they were dead. This seems unimaginable but, if I am honest, I have told exactly the same lie to several patients whose spouses had died. Mrs. Walton was in her eighties and desperate to see her husband. She’d been in hospital after a fall and was in pain. She called out for him frequently and couldn’t understand why he wasn’t there to comfort her. She was becoming more and more distressed and would try to get up to find him, despite being at risk of falling again.
“He’s on his way, don’t worry,” the nurses would say and this would calm her down. I confess I said the same thing to her. She’d smile and roll her eyes and say how he was always late for things and tell the same story about him being late for their wedding nearly 60 years ago. But he wasn’t on his way. It was a lie. He’d died two years ago. The truth, if I can use that word, is that it is a kindness to lie sometimes.
Part of the natural history of many of the dementias, in particular Alzheimer’s disease which is what Mrs. Walton had, is that the sufferer loses their short-term memory and the memory of recent events, but retains memories from the distant past. Sufferers are trapped forever in a bewildering past that many realise bares little connection to the present, but are at a loss to explain. It is very distressing and tormenting and many of the behavioural difficulties that I have encountered in those with dementia relate to them feeling upset, scared and confused that they are in a strange place, surrounded by strange people, even when they are in their own homes surrounded by their family, because they have returned back to decades ago.
They look at their adult children confused and wonder who they could be because they think their children are still toddlers. How does one deal with this? I have had countless families break down in tears in outpatient clinics or on wards, not knowing what to say or how to react as their loved one moves further and further away from them back into their distant past and they are left behind in the present. And how, as the doctor or nurse caring for these patients, does one manage the anger and outbursts of distress that comes with having no knowledge of your life for the past 10 or 20 years? The lies that doctors, nurses, carers and families tell these patients are not big, elaborate lies — they are brief reassurances intended to calm and allow the subject to be swiftly changed.
Colluding (串通) with them about this false reality they find themselves flung into is not heartless or unprofessional — it is, when done in the right way, kind and tender-hearted. That’s not to say that lying to patients with dementia unnecessarily is right or defensible or that there are not times when of course they have the right to know the truth. But what compassionate person would put another human being through the unimaginable pain of learning, for the first time again and again, repeatedly throughout the day, that their beloved one has died. It would be an unthinkable cruelness.
Sometimes, surely, honesty is simply not the best policy.
21.Write a title for this article.
22.Why do people with dementia feel upset, scared, and confused even when they are in their own homes surrounded by their family?
23.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
The public expect doctors to be honest with their patients and the author also believes that it is heartless and unprofessional to lie to patients.
24.The author says sometimes, surely, honesty is simply not the best policy. Do you agree or disagree? Why? (In about 40 words)

Some of the world’s most important scientists think the idea of people living on Mars will come true one day. Stephen Hawking believed humans must move into space to survive. “Once we spread out into space and establish independent colonies, our future should be safe.” he said. Robert Zubrin, a rocket scientist, agrees and thinks starting with Mars makes the most sense. He thinks sending people to Mars will allow us to learn a lot — for example, about the ability of humans to live in a very different environment.
However, scientists will need to terraform Mars for people to be able to live. Terraforming means changing the environment on a planet so that it is similar to Earth’s. One of the main goals of terraforming Mars is to warm it up because the average temperature there is about -60℃. One idea for warming Mars is to build factories there that produce greenhouse gases. This could take many centuries. However, it should lead to rainfall and the growth of plants, resulting in more air that people can breathe.
Another big concern for scientists is whether humans can move to Mars and still stay healthy in mind and body. As a test, six people lived in a Mars-like environment in Hawaii for a year before “returning to Earth” recently. It was a 1,200-square-foot room that was on the side of a volcano and used the sun for energy. Christiane Heinicke, one of the people who lived there, said that one of the biggest issues was feeling bored. So humans on Mars would always need to keep themselves busy with various activities.
One particular organisation based in Europe is planning to send the first humans to Mars before 2030. The organisation believes that its project is giving people worldwide the chance to be part of the first human crew ever to live on Mars for good. However, many experts think the project’s cost of USS6 billion is too low for it to be successful. The American space agency NASA believes that sending people to Mars would cost about USS100 billion, although this estimate is based on bringing them back to Earth, too. Regardless, it seems that humans living on Mars may well happen a lot sooner than most people believe.
25.What can we learn if we send humans to Mars according to Robert Zubrin?
26.What does “terraforming” mean?
27.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
ØAccording to the test, in order to stay healthy in mind and body on Mars, it is necessary for humans on Mars to stay away from various activities.
28.What should we do now before humans can live on Mars? (In about 40 words)

Be Aware of the Anti-climax
Many of us work tirelessly towards our goals, We may spend our lives dreaming of the day we are admitted to our dream university, publish our first book or purchase our first home. However, more than often, when we achieve these things, it doesn’t feel quite as expected. In fact, the achievement of these goals feels anti-climactic, or a bit of a letdown.
“An anti-climax can be an unexpected by-product of a milestone achievement. Usually, the more significant the milestone, the greater the anti-climax may be,” says Rachel Vora, psychotherapist and founder of CYP Wellbeing. “The journey to achieving a milestone can be exciting and all-consuming. Therefore, when this disappears overnight, we can often feel lost and confused.”
In psychology, the belief that we’ll be happier when we achieve our goals even has a fancy scientific name. Psychologists call it “arrival fallacy (悖论)” and it plays a big part in those feelings of emptiness that can follow achieving a goal. “The term describes how fulfilling our goals and achieving our ambitions doesn’t lead to a ‘happily ever after’”, states psychologist Lee Chambers.
If you find yourself currently working toward something big that you suspect may feel like a bit of a letdown, there are steps you can take to manage and even prevent the feeling of anti-climax.
Enjoy the journey
You’d better slow down a little and come to realize that joy comes from the doing, not the completing. So instead of rushing for it to be done, take a moment to enjoy the doing.
Foresee the comedown
If you are aware of a potential upcoming anti-climax, schedule an activity to look forward to soon after the event has finished. Consider planning some time with friends and family, or attending a concert or even a cooking class. This can act as a reminder that other aspects of life can be just as fulfilling.
Normalize the experience
The key is to normalize feelings of low mood, confusion, and self-doubt around anti-climaxes, which are something many people experience. Connecting with others may also be beneficial. It can help to engage with friends and influencers online who share similar experiences to feel less isolated (孤立的) with your own emotions.
29.According to the passage, how do people often feel after they make great achievements?
30.What does “arrival fallacy” refer to?
31.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
To deal with your anti-climax, you’d better stay away from those who share similar experiences with you.
32.Suppose you have just been admitted to your dream university. What will you do to deal with the anti-climax? (In about 40 words)

The Secret to Improving Your Memory
If you want to improve your memory, you need to know how your brain works. You might be surprised to hear that your lifestyle habits might be making it difficult for you to correctly record each piece of information, experience, or learning.
It would appear that the secret to improving your memory is really simple. It’s to take breaks. As a matter of fact, the brain has more limited energy resources than you probably think. Therefore, it tires quickly and its levels of attention begin to drop after about 30 to 45 minutes.
The hippocampus is the area of your brain that’s responsible for consolidating (巩固) your short-term memories in the long term. Furthermore, for this consolidation to be possible, there must be an connection with different regions of the cerebral cortex (大脑皮层). Currently, we know that, for best connectivity, we must rest. Therefore, factors such as tiredness, negative feelings, or stress make it difficult to connect one area to the other.
Michaela Dewar, a researcher at the University of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom, conducted a study with other experts to understand how to improve memory consolidation processes. What they found was that something as simple as taking breaks of between nine and 15 minutes improves memory, both in healthy people and in those with neurological damage.
However, there’s one small detail that’s important. The rest must be real rest. In other words, you should go to a quiet space and not have any distractions (分心的事) around you. This includes not having your cell phone nearby. The secret to improving your memory requires you to rest for between ten and 15 minutes leaving your mind completely empty. In fact, knowing how to rest is decisive for your cognitive function, balancing your emotions, and renewing your energy.
Your lifestyle plays an extremely important role in the way your memory functions. Rest isn’t wasting time. In fact, allowing yourself small breaks is investing in your health and well-being.
33.What is the secret to improve your memory?
34.What factors may influence the connection between different regions of cerebral cortex?
35.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
Taking rests is important for your memory and spending about 15 minutes in playing with your phone will help improve it.
36.In addition to what is mentioned in the passage, what else can you do to improve your memory? (In about 40 words)

A Reflection about Change
Change can be exciting and hard. It is also a fact of life in the world of education. I am a librarian at a high school. I have worked as a librarian for the past eleven years. This year my school is going through a tremendous transition. There is a new school building being constructed with a mid-year move planned. Additionally, due to some restructuring, I am working with a new teaching partner and two new grade levels. This is all incredibly exciting but also brings a level of uncertainty too. I could look at this in a negative way, but instead, I am going to focus on the upside to this transition. So here I share some ways I am embracing this change.
Working with teachers, that I have not had an opportunity to work with before, will allow me to gain new perspectives about the needs of the students in my school. The library program has been something I have worked hard to build over the past nine years. I am very close to it. It will be helpful for someone who has an outside perspective to ask questions about our practices. It will allow me to reflect on why we do certain things and will make the program better moving forward.
As I gain new perspectives from my colleagues, I also have an opportunity to share the mission of the library. It has given me a chance to highlight some of the great lessons and projects I have had the opportunity to be a part of in the past.
Is this a hill I want to die on? This is about recognizing the things that I can change and making those work rather than worrying about things that I have no control over. It is about not sweating the small stuff. If I ask myself this question and the answer is no, then I have to let it go and move on!
One of my wonderful colleagues, Cheri Dobbs, told me to give myself permission for things not to be perfect. Next year will be a year of growth. The library program will not be exactly like what we want it to be. That is OK! As long as we stay true to our goals and support students the best we can, then the rest will come together eventually.
37.What changes are happening to the author this year?
38.What will the author get from someone who has an outside perspective?
39.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
To deal with change, we should work on the things that we can change and try our best to make the things we have no control over under control.
40.Besides the opinions mentioned in the passage, what are your thoughts on change? (In about 40 words)

Doctors say anger can be an extremely damaging emotion, unless you learn how to deal with it. They warn that anger can lead to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches, emotional problems and possible cancer.
Anger is a normal emotion that we all feel from time to time. Some people express anger openly in a calm reasonable way. Others burst with anger, scream and yell. But other people keep their anger inside. They cannot or will not express it. This is called repressing anger.
For years many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a person’s health than expressing it. They said that when a person is angry, the brain releases the same chemical. They speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure, or sugar into the blood, etc. In general, the person feels excited and ready to act.
Some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe that those who express anger violently may be more likely to develop heart disease, and they believe that those who keep their anger inside may face a greater danger of high blood pressure.
Doctors say the solution is learning how to deal with anger. They say the first step is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, then decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is, they say, “Do not express your anger while angry. Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself calmly and reasonably.”
Doctors say that a good way to deal with anger is to find humor in the situation that has made you angry. They said that laughter is much healthier than anger.

CaoYuan proved he was special at age 14 when he was enrolled in the University of Science and Technology of China’s School of the Gifted Young, which is a special school to nurture (养) teenagers into world-class talents.
But Cao himself didn’t think he was special. He often stressed that he was just an ordinary kid who loved reading about science and doing experiments.
But there is other evidence that Cao is a bit different. On Dec. 19, the now 22-year-old doctoral candidate in physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the US, was named one of the 10 people who mattered this year by the journal Nature. It was for discovering a “magic angle” in graphene sheets that he has opened up a new field of superconductor physics (超导体物理学).
Graphene, first discovered in 2004 is a material made of a single layer of carbon atoms. It’s the thinnest and strongest material in the world. Cao’s work shows that when two layers of graphene are cooled to 1.7 C above absolute zero (-273oC) and rotated (旋转) to a “magic angle” of 1.1 degrees, the upper layer of graphene exhibits nonconducting behaviors.
However, Cao found that these electrons (电子) could flow in the graphene sandwich freely---as if they were travelling through a superconductor when small amounts of electrons were added to the structure.
The discovery is exciting. “One can imagine making a superconducting transistor out of graphene, which you can switch on and off, from superconducting to insulating,” Pablo Jarillo-Herrero, Cao’s professor at MIT, told Science Daily.
But why was Cao able to make the discovery? Both his high school physics teacher Huang Jiatang and Jarillo-Herrero attribute it to Cao’s capacity for independent learning and interest in doing experiments.
Huang said that he remembered that as a young kid Cao had a strong ability to study on his own, a love for hands-on experiments and was unafraid to challenge teachers and ask difficult questions.
Cao seems to be a highly inquisitive young man. Jarillo-Herrero told Nature that Cao’s hobbies include photographing the night sky using homemade cameras. “Every time I go in Cao’ office, it’s a huge mess, with computers taken apart and pieces of telescope all over his desk”, he said.
But even with such convincing proof, Cao still sees himself as an ordinary college student. “After all, we are all humans, with flaws and emotions,” he said.
46.List two factors that lead to Cao’s achievement.
47.Why was Cao Yuan listed “Person of the Year” by the journal Nature?
48.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
Cao Yuan discovered graphene and opened up a new field of superconductor physics.

Emoji and Workplace Communication
In Asia, messaging platforms are growing rapidly, with users in the hundreds of millions, both at work and play. The popularity of these platforms is spreading globally. It’s been reported that 76 percent of employees in some western countries are using emojis at work.
Written communications can often read as cold and dull. Using emojis can add humor and feeling, keeping intention clear. Messages with emojis feel more conversational, encouraging better and more frequent communication.
In any given office, employees can range from age 22 to 70 and beyond, and finding common ground in communication style can be a challenge. An easy way to bring all work generations together is with a chat platform. While the younger generations prefer to communicate visually, for those used to working with traditional tools like email, it may feel like a learning curve (曲线). The good news is that it’s simple to learn and can be worth the effort.
There is also the matter of tone (语气). Who hasn’t received an email so annoying that it ruined an entire day? Even a formal email can seem cold and unfriendly. Emoji can help communication feel friendlier, and even a serious note can be softened with an encouraging smile.
Studies show that friendlier communication leads to a happier workplace and emoji can contribute directly to that positive outcome. And when your employees begin adding smiling emojis to their business communication, you’ll know you have succeeded in improving your work culture.
50.According to the passage, what is the function of using emojis in communication?
51.Please paraphrase the underlined part in your own words.
52.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
➢ An emoji in a formal business email can make it informal.
53.Think of an occasion where you use emojis and explain why. (about 40 words)

One cool April 22 morning, people started the day as usual. Yet it was not a normal day. What’s so special about April 22? The answer is simple. It is Earth Day. People all over the world celebrate this important day. The idea of having a special day to celebrate Earth began in the 1960s. Life was very different then. Few people talked or even thought about the environment. Most people had no idea how dirty our air and water were.
On April 22, 1970, twenty million Americans joined the first Earth Day activities. They showed that people really did want to do something about the environment. Since then laws have been passed to protect the air, water, land and animals.
The vehicles such as cars and buses you ride in must pass tests to make sure they don’t cause too much pollution. Thanks to this law, cars today release about half as many bad chemicals as cars did back in 1970. As a result, the air we breathe is cleaner than it once was.
Rivers and lakes are also cleaner today than they were in the 1970s. It’s a good thing because they needed a lot of help. The Cuyahoga River in Ohio was so polluted that rubbish and oil on the river even caught fire! Today, the river is cleaner. It no longer burns. It’s healthy enough for birds, fish and other animals.
Now the celebration has spread to other countries. More than 175 countries take part each year.
In 2007, people in China paid much attention to a big problem. People were throwing away 27 million plastic bags a day! People had “Bye-Bye Throwaway Culture Week”. They wanted everyone to see how polluted it was to throw away so many plastic bags. In 2008, China passed new laws against them.
Every April 22, millions get together to clean and protect Earth. They also celebrate how far we have come. Our job is to put this knowledge to work. You can help keep our planet healthy too!

“What is the most enjoyable part of your senior high school life? ” when asked this question, many students replied that club activities interested them most in school life. They enjoyed being with the club members who shared the same hobby with them.
In most of the schools, students are free to choose the clubs they are particularly interested in. Some students join one club, and some join two or more. Only a very few do not take part at all. The students run all the clubs themselves without the help of teachers. There are a number of sports and arts clubs that students may join. Sports clubs include football, volleyball, basketball, handball, hockey, tennis, badminton, gymnastics, judo and kendo(剑道). They take place in the school gym or the school playing fields. There are also arts activities such as the painting and calligraphy club, dance club, the school orchestra and the school choir(合唱团). The clubs meet two to four times a week after school. Sports coaches and club leaders are often school graduates who come back to help.
Club activities after class play an important part in students' school life. Young people spend a lot of time together in club activities and they often become true friends. These friendships often last a long time after graduation. Some become life-long friends. There is a popular belief that true friends are people who have had similar life experiences. For the past few years, Jennifer and Tim Hegseth of Northfield, Minnesota, wanted to correct the course of their family’s lifestyle, but they didn’t know how to change.
Jennifer, 46, is an airline pilot who is on the road three days a week. When she’s gone, her 47-year-old husband, Tim, who works full time, ferries their children, Sam, 11, and Ella, 7, to all their after-school activities including various sports.
In the past, Tim often grabbed fast-food meals or whipped up quick frozen dinners for himself and the kids. He has a sedentary(久坐的)job and rarely found time to exercise. Jennifer tried to go to the hotel gyms when she was away from home, but it wasn’t enough physical activity to keep her weight in check.
By late December, the couple felt out of shape and wanted to make some changes. “I want my family to get moving.” Jennifer said.
So the Hegseths volunteered to participate in this year’s Family Fitness Challenge. The ongoing project is being produced in partnership with USA Weekend and “The Doctors” TV show.
More than 400 families applied to take part in the challenge. Six families were chosen, and they were paired with a fitness expert from the American College of Sports Medicine and a registered dietitian from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The families have been working with their professionals since early January.
The Hegseths are now walking a couple miles at the local high school. “Sam and I go every Friday. We talk about his week at school. It’s a bonding time,” she said.

Today, technological advances are rapidly making it possible to automate much of the work currently carried out by humans. This applies to both blue-collar jobs, through robotics and the Internet of Things, and white-collar work, through artificial intelligence. The wide applicability of these technologies has led to broad concern about the destruction of jobs. Indeed, according to a 2014 Oxford study, 47% of jobs in the US could be replaced by automated processes in the next two decades.
Of course, as many have noted, while technology has always removed the need for some types of jobs, it also creates new ones. Technology is a set of tools that we use in different ways to increase efficiency. The Industrial Revolution destroyed some jobs but created many more. It also increased the total wealth of society and began to create a middle class who could enjoy health, education and other benefits that previously had been available only to the wealthiest. It can be challenging to predict the kinds of jobs that this new revolution will create and in what quantities, which makes the situation seem worse than it actually is. But nine of the top ten most in-demand jobs of 2012 did not exist in 2003, suggesting that this latest revolution is creating new employment opportunities.
For many, this picture is overly optimistic. The new jobs require a completely different skills set – you can’t turn an assembly plant worker into a data scientist overnight, if at all. Others are concerned that we are facing a permanent reduction in the need for human labour. Science fiction has long imagined a future where we no longer have to work and can spend our time on more noble pursuits. Could it be that we are reaching that inflection point in human history? If we are, neither our social norms nor our economic systems are ready for it. Today, self-worth is inherently tied up with jobs, professions, careers and trades.
69.How is white-collar work automated by technology?

Home alone: Are you ready?
Do you know that in the US almost half of all kids aged 6 to 13 are home alone for part of the day? The boys in the Home Alone movies certainly have fun, but the whole experience can be freaky sometimes. These days, even a lot of adults are scared to be alone in the house! It’s totally understandable if you or someone you know are nervous about being home alone.
Take Jessi and her brother Joey as an example. For over five years now, they’ve been taking care of themselves until their mum comes home from work. Jessi says that the worst thing about it is when she or her brother is locked out. Then they have to wait on the porch until the other gets home! Sometimes, both of them get locked out! Fortunately, they each have a cellphone so they can call their mum when that happens.
Your parents think you’re ready, but do you?
At first it sounds cool to be home alone, right? Think of the freedom you’d have around the house! There’s nobody to stop you from playing video games or watching your favourite TV show!
Joey admits that he likes being able to watch TV shows or listen to music he likes. “ It’s more freedom, ” he says, “ but it’s also more responsibility. ”
So there you are listening to that CD your parents hate. Then what’s that? You hear a noise outside. It sounds like it could be a person on the front doorstep, and there’s been a string of robberies in the area lately. Suddenly, your unsupervised (没人监管的) freedom doesn’t feel so safe anymore.
It’s a normal feeling and it doesn’t mean you’re a “baby”. There’s always stuff going on in the world to shake our feelings of security. You might feel totally fine about being alone when you’re 10. Then, two years later, something happens that makes you feel different about it. Every person and every home environment is unique.
If you have worries about being home alone, it’s really important to speak out about them, even though it may cost money to get a sitter or your parent has to rearrange his or her schedule.
72.What will Jessi and Joey do if both of them get locked out? ( no more than 6 words )
73.What’s the main idea of Paragraph 4? ( no more than 6 words )

Is it possible to improve your brain function? The answer is “yes”.
Information in your brain is collected, stored and recalled by neural pathways. These pathways are responsible for your abilities to solve problems, remember familiar faces and tasks, without paying a ton of efforts. Millions of these neural pathways begin developing from the time when you are growing into a baby. To keep our memory healthy, we need to create new pathways continually.
As we age, our lifestyles often change, stopping those pathways from being developed. Two frequent changes are a decrease in exercise and less attention to our diet, which have a negative effect on our brain and memory. Our brain requires consistent stimulation, regardless of our age, and looking for ways to excite the production of new pathways is critical. Just like your physical muscles need to be used in different ways to make them stronger, our brain needs change to help challenge its abilities.
One simple way to stimulate the production of new pathways is trying something new.
Challenge your brain with puzzles, a new language or learning how to play an instrument. Anything different and new can stimulate your brain and memory. The best activities are the ones outside of your comfort zone. They push you as you develop new neural pathways. The effort involved in learning and committing to memory a new skill, with new terms and language, is a great way to exercise your brain.
Another way to stimulate the production of new pathways is doing exercise. When you exercise your body, you are also working out your mind, because regular activity helps to improve the chemicals in your brain and to protect brain cells.
76.According to the passage, what can negatively affect our brain and memory?
77.Why are the best activities the ones outside of your comfort zone?
78.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
The two ways mentioned in the passage to help create new pathways are trying something new and exercising your brain by challenging your brain with different tasks.
79.What else can you do to improve your brain function? (In about 40 words)

It was the spring of 2016, and 17-year-old Beatrice De Lavalette was waiting for a flight when she got hit by the explosion at Brussels airport. Along with serious burns and a spinal cord (脊髓) injury, De Lavalette lost both legs below the knee.
The event destroyed her dream of dressage (花样骑术). She began riding at age 3 and by 12, she’d taken up dressage. Riding is a passion not only for De Lavalette but for her family as well.
Unsurprisingly, De Laavlette was disappointed as she tried to come to terms (达成协议) with her injuries, She admitted to crying a lot in the hospital until an unexpected visitor turned things around for her. “My mom had figured out a way to get to the hospital parking lot. I went outside in the rain and as I got closer, DeeDee came towards me and put her head against my chest. That moment made me decide that I wasn’t going to give up life. The reason why I’ve gotten to this level of recovery is my horse,” De Lavalette said.
Getting back in the saddle (马鞍) was a tough thing considering her injuries. “I had no muscle, I was just skin and bones, so being back in the saddle with no sense of balance was really uncomfortable.” De Lavalette said. But she was determined to do so as soon as she was able to. It has taken continuous hard work for her to adjust to her body’s new normal.
As her efforts began to pay off, the Paralympics seemed the perfect way to show her hard-earned skills. After making her first appearance as part of the U.S. Para-Dressage team, De Lavalette appeared at the 2020 Paralympics in Tokyo.

He thinks sending people to Mars will allow us to learn a lot—for example, about the ability of humans to live in a very different environment.(火箭科学家罗伯特·祖布林对此表示赞同,并认为从火星开始研究是最有意义的。他认为,将人类送上火星将让我们了解到很多东西,例如,人类在一个完全不同的环境中生活的能力。)”可知,将人类送上火星可以让我们了解到很多东西,如人类在一个完全不同的环境中生活的能力。故答案为According to Robert Zubrin, sending people to Mars will allow us to learn a lot — for example, about the ability of humans to live in a very different environment.
26.考查词义猜测。根据文章第二段“One of the main goals of terraforming Mars is to warm it up because the average temperature there is about -60℃. One idea for warming Mars is to build factories there that produce greenhouse gases. This could take many centuries. However, it should lead to rainfall and the growth of plants, resulting in more air that people can breathe.(火星terraforming的主要目标之一是使其升温,因为那里的平均温度约为-60度。使火星升温的一个想法是在那里建造制造温室气体的工厂。这可能需要几个世纪。然而,它应该会导致降雨和植物的生长,导致更多的空气,让人们可以呼吸)”可知,在火星上建制造温室气体的工厂是为了让火星升温,这样可以降雨,植物可以生长,进而产生让人呼吸的空气,所以可知,所做的这一切都是为了能够让火星和地球环境更相似,这样人类才可以在上面生存,所以terraforming的意思就是“让火星更像地球”。故答案为Terraforming means make Mars more like Earth.
27.考查细节理解。根据文章第三段最后两句话“Christiane Heinicke, one of the people who lived there, said that one of the biggest issues was feeling bored. So humans on Mars would always need to keep themselves busy with various activities.(住在那里的克里斯蒂安·海尼克说,最大的问题之一是感到无聊。所以火星上的人类总是需要让自己忙于各种活动。)”可知,在火星上的最大问题之一是无聊,因此,为了要保持身体和精神上的健康,人类需要让自己忙于各种活动,错误部分为to stay away from various activities。故答案为According to the test, in order to stay healthy in mind and body on Mars, it is necessary for humans on Mars to stay away from various activities. According to Christiane Heinicke, one of the people who lived there, one of the biggest issues was feeling bored. So humans on Mars would always need to keep themselves busy with various activities.
28.考查细节理解。根据文章第二段第一句话“However, scientists will need to terraform Mars for people to be able to live. (然而,科学家需要改造火星,使人们能够生活。地球化是指改变一个星球的环境,使其与地球环境相似。地球化火星的主要目标之一是使其升温,因为那里的平均温度约为-60℃。让火星变暖的一个想法是在那里建立工厂,生产温室气体。这可能需要几个世纪的时间。然而,它应该会导致降雨和植物的生长,导致人们可以呼吸更多的空气。)”可知,在人类能去火星居住前,需要改造火星的环境,使其升温,能让人类在火星上居住;还要在火星建立工厂,导致降雨和植物生长,产生空气;根据文章第三段“Another big concern for scientists is whether humans can move to Mars and still stay healthy in mind and body. So humans on Mars would always need to keep themselves busy with various activities.(科学家们担心的另一个大问题是,人类能否搬到火星上,同时仍然保持身心健康。作为一项测试,六个人在夏威夷的类火星环境中生活了一年,最近才“返回地球”。这是一个1200平方英尺的房间,位于一座火山的一侧,利用太阳能发电。住在那里的克里斯蒂安·海尼克说,最大的问题之一是感到无聊。所以火星上的人类总是需要让自己忙于各种活动。)”可知,在火星上会很无聊,所以为了保证身体和精神健康,人类需要忙于各种活动。故答案为First of all, we need to terraform Mars to warm it up so that people will be able to live there. Second, build factories there that produce greenhouse gases. Third, keep busy with various activities so that we won’t feel bored there.
