It is easy to get carried away in an argument.
While having a rational conversation with someone who has a different opinion might seem like a challenge, it is possible. One way is to approach the other person with empathy.
The Empathy Challenge is an exercise created by Zoe Chance, senior lecturer at the Yale School of Management. At Yale, Chance teaches a course called “Mastering Influence and Persuasion” where students learn to communicate more effectively.
In her blog, Chance explains that it’s important to listen to people who disagree with you. “As they explain their position, you listen for their underlying values. Finally, you look for common ground as you reflect those values back. That’s it.”
Chance first took this challenge herself before asking her students to try. As she couldn’t understand why many people chose to vote for Donald Trump, she found three Trump’s voters and spoke with them.
Through asking questions, Chance was able to empathize with them and realize they had similar feelings. One man, an Orthodox Jew, explained that he supported Trump because Trump’s daughter and son-in-law are Jewish. The next man was a Russian immigrant passionate about freedom. The third was a lawyer who believed that authenticity (真诚) was important in political leaders.
Although Chance and Chose people had different political beliefs, they were able to relate to the life values of others. And that’s the point of the exercise-to understand others as fellow human beings.

C.Their family background. D.Their childhood experience.
4.What’s the best title for the passage?
A.Respect different perspectives B.Zoe Chance’s empathy

America is a mobile society. Friendships between Americans can be close and real , yet disappear soon if situations change. Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us flower more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending(延伸)sometimes deeply into both families.
Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, and share their holidays and their home life. They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality(好客)easily.
Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they include us warmly in their personal everyday life, they don’t show their politeness to us if it requires a great deal of time. This is usually the opposite of the practice in our country where we may be generous with our time. Sometimes, we, as hosts, will appear at airports even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off to act as guides for our foreign friends. The Americans, however, express their welcome usually at home, but truly can not manage a great deal of time to do with a visitor outside their daily routine. They will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus. And they expect that we will phone them from there. Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real. We will find ourselves treated hospitably.
For the Americans, it is often considered friendlier to invite a friend to their homes than to go to restaurants, except for purely business matters. So accept their hospitality at home!

A recent study by a group of researchers found that there is a link between happiness and a term that the researchers coined called “relational diversity.”
Using public data from sources like the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the World Health Organization, the researchers were able to analyze data sets and survey responses from people who had shared their daily habits, schedules and interactions. They noticed a clear relationship between relational diversity and overall levels of satisfaction.
Hanne Collins, a Harvard Business School doctoral student who co-authored the study, says that relational diversity is composed of two elements: richness and evenness.
Richness measures relationship categories, or how many kinds of people you interact with in a day. That could be your romantic partner, a family member, a neighbor or a stranger. “The more relationship categories they talk to in a day and the more even their conversations are across those categories, the happier they are. And we find this in a large sample across many countries,” Collins said.
Evenness relates to the distribution of conversations among those different relationship categories. Some people may find themselves interacting with colleagues at work more than, say, their family members. “If you have a few conversations with colleagues, a few with friends, a few with a romantic partner or a couple chats with strangers, thats going to be more even across these categories,” Collins explained.
Ultimately, Collins says, the study gives insight to the idea that humans are social creatures at heart. Having a support system is important, but it goes beyond your inner circle. “Its about this mix. Its about connecting with people who are close to you, who are maybe less close to you, who connect you with other people, who provide different kinds of support,” she said. “Essentially, the idea is that the more diverse your social portfolio (社交档案), the happier you are and the higher your well-being.”
Next time you consider striking up a conversation with a stranger in line at the grocery store or while waiting at the coffee shop, keep in mind that it might be beneficial to your well-being.
15.How does the author explain the term “relational diversity”?

D.A person who has ever conversations with many different people.
17.Which of the statements about the study is true?
A.Researchers came up with a new concept.
B.It shows that a support system is not necessary.
C.Researchers collected data by conducting experiments.
D.It was led by a doctoral student from Harvard Business School.
18.What is the writers attitude towards the result of the study?
A.Neutral. B.Skeptical.

Each year on October 15, Global Handwashing Day is observed to strengthen the health awareness and prevent the spread of infectious diseases. And a hand—shaped robot called “Pepe”, which encourages kids to wash their hands, has helped pupils at a remote Indian primary school to develop habits of personal hygiene (卫生).
Pepe was fixed on the wall above a hand—washing station at Wayanad Government Primary School in Kerala, which has about 100 pupils aged 5 and 10. A small video screen behind the green plastic Pepe acted as a “mouth”, allowing researchers to tele—operate the robot to speak to the pupils and draw their attention to the poster outlining the steps of effective hand—washing. A set of moving “eyes” helped Pepe pay attention to the children’s actions.
The robot helped pupils wash their hands more effectively, increasing their rates of hand—washing by 40 percent. Pupils spent twice as long washing their hands after Pepe’s arrival. And more than 95% of the students could correctly determine when hand—washing with soap has to be done—before a meal and after a visit to the toilet.
Hand—washing is one of the most effective ways against the spread of diarrhea and respiratory infections. Dr. Amol Deshmukh, from the University of Glasgow’s School of Computing Science, led the project in partnership with colleagues from Amrita University. He said, “We were delighted by the success of Pepe’s visit to this primary school. The children were excited to interact with this relatively simple machine, which was clearly good for keeping their hands clean. Dr. Bhavani from Amrita University said,” AMMACHI (Amrita Multi Modal Application and Computer Human Interaction) Labs have taken multi plans to address common challenges facing low—income rural communities in India and worldwide using technology.”
19.Why was “Pepe” fixed at the Primary School?
A.To watch on pupil’ actions. B.To wash children’s hands.
C.To freshen the environment. D.To develop children’s health habits.
20.How did the robot bring changes to the pupils?
A.By playing with pupils. B.By providing knowledge.
C.By offering pupils soap. D.By washing pupils’ hands.
21.What can you learn about Pepe’s visit to the primary school?
A.It was a failure. B.It had no effect.
C.It was a success. D.It was a waste of time.
22.What does the underlined word “address” in the last paragraph mean?
A.deal with. B.write a place on. C.make a speech to. D.speak to.

I grew up with a four-year gap between myself and my younger brother. It was a distance in age to keep us close as we got older, but also an age gap to make sure we lived our own lives in completely different ways. Having a younger brother while I was a girl was a lot of work, for there was a lot of fighting.
However, as we've got older, we've become closer, and I've learned several things in life from my younger brother that I didn't realize I needed before.
My younger brother is one of the most talented and creative souls I've known. He's continually feeding his creativity with new art forms and new instruments. He always seeks to understand and learn more about the world around him. He's helped remind me through his actions and words that giving up on creativity is something a person should never do.
My younger brother has also been through hard times, but he's able to focus on learning from the hard times, unlike me, who tends to hold on to every little thing from my life. It's always been difficult for me to let things go and move on, but my younger brother has been an inspiration for me to try harder at letting go.
My younger brother has always been a more introverted type, and if you speak to him, you're lucky to get over three words out of him at a time. Because of this, he's certainly learned the whole "actions speak louder than words" thing. But, I've realized from my brother that I needn't speak to fill the silence. Sometimes, it's necessary to spend some of your time in silence and reflect in it.

We humans are addicted to sugar. That makes sense. All animals need sugar to live. It’s the fuel that powers our cells. So it’s not surprising that we’re born to want the sweet stuff.
Sugar stores the sun’s energy like a battery. After a meal, your body breaks down foods into their building blocks. It uses some sugar for energy right away. The rest get stored for the body to break down later. It’s a myth that sugar makes you extremely excited, but having a sugary snack can give you a quick burst of energy. That’s because the sugar in sweet foods is easy for your body to turn into fuel. When you eat other kinds of foods, like vegetables, it takes longer for your body to break the sugar down.
These days it’s easy to find sweet snacks. Sodas, candy, cakes and even foods that seem healthy, such as yogurt, can be packed with sugar. Food makers add sugar, because they know that to humans, sweet makes everything taste better. Americans eat about 20 teaspoons of extra sugar every day. That’s more than what is good for us.
Eating too much sugar can cause more than a stomachache. It can make people overweight, decay the teeth and even cause diabetes(糖尿病). However, experts aren’t worried about naturally sweet foods — the problem is added sugar. So go ahead and enjoy sweet apples or even sugarrich carrots that are also full of vitamins and other good stuff.
Even cake is great once in a while, as long as you don’t overdo it. After all, no one wants life to be dull. And your body needs its fuel!

B.We’d better consume sugar from natural sources.
C.Eating too much sugar is bad for our health.
D.Experts are worried about added sugar.
33.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Sugar Is Everywhere B.Sugar Brings Happiness
C.Why Do We Love Sugar? D.Why Does Sugar Make Us Fat?
Think about the last time you did something that you found difficult. Was it working out a puzzle or working hard on your math homework? Can you remember the expression you had on your face? Most people will press their lips together and frown when they are doing something they find difficult. This is normally seen as a sign of effort. Now we’ve found that it can also say more than that.
A recent study at the University of Portsmouth in England suggests that the human expression of effort and frustration is our way of asking others for help. Scientists at the university gave children and chimps an impossible puzzle to work out. When the children couldn’t work out the puzzle, their faces expressed determination and effort. The chimps did not. Humans and chimps, however, have many facial expressions that share the same meaning. A human smile is the same as a chimp showing its teeth in happiness. Scientists believe that over time, humans have evolved (进化) to use this facial expression to ask for help. We have also learned to respond to it by offering help.
According to Dr Albert Mehrabian, a well-known professor of psychology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), only 7% of human communication happens through words and 55% is through body language. Therefore, understanding expressions is second nature to human beings.
With this in mind, next time you see a person with a frustrated expression, listen to your heart and stop to lend them a hand.
34.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A.The occasion. B.The facial expression. C.The puzzle. D.A sign of effort.
35.What do people express through the facial expression of effort or frustration according to the recent study?
A.They need others’ help. B.They can do things themselves.
C.They will give up. D.They want to be alone.
36.What do we know about the chimps in the study?
A.They had no difficulty working out the puzzle.
B.They smiled as they worked out the puzzle.
C.Their faces didn’t show determination or effort.
D.They used other expressions to ask for help.
37.What does Dr Albert Mehrabian say about human communication?
A.It happens more through body language.
B.It doesn’t have to use any word at all.
C.Facial expression hides true feelings.
D.Spoken language is more powerful.
For a long time, comedy has been referred to as a profession for men only. But this has changed in recent years. Many female comics have made themselves outstanding on the stage not by ignoring the issues of gender (性别) inequality, but by bringing them to light.
Yang Li, 28, a stand-up comedy for about three years, focuses on the difficulties females face. For example, recently she bitingly joked about how women are represented in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “In the film, The Avengers, there are six heroes, and only one of them is a woman, whose superpower is the ability to slow down her aging. How exactly can she be designed to save the world by surviving until all the bad guys die?” she said.
Despite getting more important roles, women still face challenges in the comedy industry. “I’ve found that the audience tend to be more judgmental about a female comedian’s appearance,” said Yang Mengqi, an outstanding comic. To avoid unwelcome attention, female comics have to be especially smart in choosing what clothes they wear to perform.
The other challenge is that females are sometimes taken less seriously, despite plenty of evidence of their talent and dedication in the field with males in the majority. Maple Zuo is a comic who performs in both English and Mandarin. “It’s hard to fit in when I’m the only female comedian at a show.” said Zuo, who has toured internationally. “Every time there’s a comedy scene party, they are naturally divided up into two groups: one for the male comics, the other for their girlfriends, she said. “I always end up hanging out with the girlfriends.”
Even so, many Chinese female comics feel optimistic about their future. Yang said, “When people ask what has motivated me to stick with stand-up comedy, my response is simple: I hope to use whatever influence I have to improve gender equality.”
38.Why did Yang Li joke about the role of the woman hero in The Avengers?
A.The woman hero is less brave than male heroes.
B.The woman hero has the power to defend the world.
C.There is only one woman surviving in the world.
D.The role shows the negative image about women.
39.What is the example of Maple Zuo used to show about female comics?
A.They are particular about clothing. B.They are not always valued.
C.They have a talent for acting. D.They are often treated critically.
40.What is Yang Li’s attitude toward the future of female comics?
A.Confused. B.Content. C.Disturbed. D.Hopeful.
41.What is the author’s purpose in writing this text?
A.To introduce the development of the comedy industry
B.To comment on the roles women comics play.
C.To present the challenges that female comics face.
D.To argue for the achievements of female comics.
Feeling good and having humor in our lives can do wonders for our position and productivity, which means that there is definitely a place for some humor on the job. Having a smiling face will help your co-workers and supervisors feel better around you, and you may well end up harvesting rewards by laughing more in the workplace. But you need to know how to apply humour to your work environment.
One of the main rules with humour in the workplace is to avoid argument when you are joking on the job. Stay well away from joking about political affairs, race and religion. Never make fun of other people within your organization, as you are trying to win friends with the people you work with, and not set against them. If you can’t help yourself, please be extremely careful.
Making jokes about the ups and downs of your trade is a safe way to the place of work. You will have the benefit of knowing exactly what your co-workers have to face each day, and it’s much better as it helps to let go of tensions and lower stress levels by getting them to chuckle(低声地笑)about the situations they come across frequently.
The very best time for some humor is when you are not working, but still in the region of the people you work with, such as a coffee or lunch break. You can also make an effort to be funny on the job, but when you are working, it’s a good idea to use jokes much more thinly than you would normally do.
In general, humour in the workplace is a superb area to flex your creative muscles and be a great help to your job.
42.Which of the following best describes the function of humor in the workplace?
A.Special. B.Convincing. C.Rewarding. D.Ordinary.
43.What topic is safe to joke about at work?
A.Politics. B.Work. C.Race. D.Religion.
44.What does the underlined word “thinly” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Humorously. B.Secretly. C.Directly. D.Infrequently.
45.What is the best title for the text?
A.Views on making friends at work
B.Ways of making humour at work
C.Benefits of being humorous at work
D.Attitudes towards making humor at work

My Favourite Books
Jo Usmar is a writer for Cosmopolitan and co-author of the This Book Will series (系列) of lifestyle books. Here she picks her top reads.
Matilda
Roald Dahl
I once wrote a paper on the influence of fairy tales on Roald Dahl’s writing and it gave me a new appreciation for his strange and delightful worlds. Matilda’s battles with her cruel parents and the bossy headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, are equally funny and frightening, but they’re also aspirational.
After Dark
Haruki Murakami
It’s about two sisters — Eri, a model who either won’t or can’t stop sleeping, and Mari, a young student. In trying to connect to her sister, Mari starts changing her life and discovers a world of diverse “night people” who are hiding secrets.
Gone Girl
Gillian Flynn

Gone Girl
Gillian Flynn
There was a bit of me that didn’t want to love this when everyone else on the planet did, but the horror story is brilliant. There’s tension and anxiety from the beginning as Nick and Amy battle for your trust. It’s a real whodunit and the frustration when you realise what’s going on is horribly enjoyable.
The Stand
Stephen King
This is an excellent fantasy novel from one of the best storytellers around. After a serious flu outbreak wipes out 99.4% of the world’s population, a battle unfolds between good and evil among those left. Randall Flagg is one of the scariest characters ever.

In 2013, Gabby Frost founded Buddy Project when she was 15. At that time her best friend had been diagnosed (诊断) with a mental health condition, and that was the first time she was made aware of what mental illness was. She wanted to learn more and develop a good support system for her.
Mental illness affects tens of millions of people in the United States each year, yet only half receive treatment, according to the National Institutes of Mental Health. Buddy Project’s website says the service is not a substitute for therapy or other types of mental health care, and that it directs people to resources for further help.
Since founding the organization as a high school student, Frost has helped more than 200,000 participants find a new friend. On the day when Buddy Project was launched, she used her powerful social media presence to attract nearly 3,000 participants. “This was around the time when teens really began talking about mental health and found a supportive community online to talk about it,” she said.
One of the biggest social barriers she had to jump over was that people didn’t view her seriously because she was a 15-year-old girl, and even now, she’s still a young woman. “Sometimes it’s frustrating because people don’t think what I do is needed or they don’t think I’m professional,” she said. “Most people are blown away that a 20-year-old girl is running this and that it’s one person doing this but not a whole team. I’m just lucky that I’ve found a support system that has been able to help my mum and me with the project.”
52.Why did Gabby Frost set up Buddy Project?

D.She wasn’t thought well of because of her age.
55.What do the underlined words “blown away” probably mean?

No matter how advanced technology gets, it can never be a substitute for good doctors and medical workers. During this year alone, health care professionals from all over the world have been putting themselves in a harmful way to treat COVID-19 patients. In times like this it is more important than ever that everyone has access to a doctor. But, according to statistics from the WHO, China has 19.79 medical doctors per 10,000 people (2017), the US has 26.12, and the UK has 27.86.
However, the rise of telemedicine allows doctors to make better use of their time and provides better health care access, especially for those in rural areas. Telemedicine is the remote delivery of health care services, including online consultations and diagnoses, and remote patient monitoring.
According to the World Economy Forum, nearly every other industry adopted widespread use of conference calls, and more recently, used video chats in order to cooperate remotely, while health care providers and patients both hesitated to adopt these tools to deliver health care. However, COVID-19 could push them to adopt the new approach. Having one of the best health care systems in the world, Switzerland already offers virtual video appointments for private patients, and with cloud computing, this care can go even further.
With patient data being stored in the cloud, medical records can be easily shared and updated by all health care providers when required. With the addition of powerful cloud networks, wearable technology, such as bracelets, can monitor a patient’s key signs from their homes, removing the need for hospital care.
Seema, administrator of Medicare and Medicaid Centre, told the Wall Street Journal, “The arrival of telehealth has been just completely speeded, and it’s taken this crisis to push us to a new frontier.” Indeed, telemedicine will have a huge effect on medical care, allowing for more personalized treatment of patients after COVID-19 has relieved.
56.What service doesn’t telemedicine offer to online patients?

As an English teacher, I found that English slang (俚语) can be more difficult for those who learn English as a second language to understand. It can be confusing too. This became clear when I was talking to one of my students, Cathy, in Japan. “Excuse me, Miss White. I want to go to buy a notebook outside the school.” “It’s bucketing outside,” I said. It is an English slang expression which means “it is raining”. However, she didn’t seem to understand what I said.
The point I’m trying to get across is that being puzzled about English slang in the beginning is rather natural because it is what makes the language special. But learning some slang is a fantastic way of understanding the culture of a country. English does have some interesting slang. Here is some of my favorite slang which is common in Northern Ireland.
To keel over: If someone keels over, it basically means that he/she has fallen over because he/she has passed out or died.
To be in bed with your head: This is used to describe someone who has gone to bed because he/she has a headache.
To upset the apple cart: This means that someone has caused trouble or upset someone’s plans.
Dead on: This means “exactly right”, “perfect”, or shows that someone agrees with what you’ve said.
Slang can be difficult to learn but it’s really impressive when you get it right! Slang also helps you sound friendly, so it’s great for making friends. If you can use some of these English expressions in a conversation, people will be amazed!
60.How did Cathy feel when the author said “It’s bucketing outside”?
A.She was unhappy. B.She was surprised.
C.She was worried. D.She was puzzled.
61.What does the author think of English slang according to Paragraph 2?
A.It tells us the history of a country. B.It is created by language teachers.
C.It reflects the culture of a country. D.It is used to impress foreigners.
62.If someone says “Does the word “lift” mean ‘elevator’?”, what could you say?
A.I keel over. B.You’re dead on.
C.You upset the apple cart. D.I’m in bed with my head.
63.In which part of a newspaper can we read this text?
A.Culture. B.Science. C.Travel. D.Lifestyle.
When was the last time your family sat down together to have a dinner?
The speed at which we live today no longer allows for slow eating habits. Most people work long hours. There is lots of fast food and eating out is now on the increase. Often, food is eaten in front of the television in silence, or a child eats alone in front of the computer.
When I was a child, every evening around the same time, one of the children would be asked to set the table, and then we’d go and wash our hands before the meal. This was the time of day when we would talk about our day at school. But now things have changed a lot.
A family environment plays an important role for children in learning to communicate with others and understanding table manners, such as waiting for others to finish before leaving the table and not speaking with a mouth full of food. Parents’ likes and dislikes of a certain food will also influence a child’s own likes and dislikes. Studies have shown that children who often eat with their families have better results at school than children who eat with their families less than twice a week.
Regular meal times give children the chance to discuss their problems with family members. They can also learn to respect others around the table. Talking to your children over dinner is the best way of having their-trust. Children learn good eating habits from their parents at a very young age. Family meals are important. Prepare them for your children.
64.Some families eat less together because _________.
A.people are busy with their work B.most children live in a school
C.food in the restaurant is better D.table manners change a lot
65.While the writer was young , he_________.

B.he usually left the table before others finish their meals
C.he enjoyed having meals together with his families
D.had meals with his families in the same way as now.
66.Children who often eat with their families _________.
A.prefer to share food with others. B.turn out to do better in their studies.
C.show concerns about families. D.are interested in cooking.
67.Who do you think this passage is written for?
A.children. B.students.
C.parents. D.grandparents.
