Remember solar roadways, where solar panels were fitted in roads? I thought it was the worst transportation idea ever until Musk’s Boring Company came along — the only place where solar panels were fitted was under my basement floor. Although, now I would say putting solar panels in Musk’s tunnels(隧道) is worse.
However, placing solar panels in roads is available due to the fact that this resource is everywhere in the sun and that there will be a lot of electric cars someday. But there is another kind of road called the railroad that might be a better place for solar panels. And that’s what is happening in Germany, where solar panels are being fitted between the rails.
As estimated, 100 kilowatts of electricity can be generated every one kilometer of railway line. Since the rail network in Germany is over 60,000 kilometers long, the power to be generated is comparable to the output of five nuclear power plants in total.Undoubtedly, the potential could be huge.
Therefore, I think putting solar panels in railways better than roadways. First, trains generally stay on the rails, so there is no need to have solar panels designed to take any serious load. Although there is a serious amount of vibration(振动), the panels wouldn’t shake apart because they are not connected to the tracks. On the other hand, the power from solar panels can be supplied to overhead lines to train stations or to the consumer and buildings alongside the rail lines.
German railways have been trying to show good reasons for using hydrogen-powered trains because it was too expensive to electrify many of their lines, so turning their rail beds into power sources might change the economics. Besides, railways are much wider than the track, and it makes sense to place the panels next to the track, pointing in a suitable direction instead of lying flat.
But still, solar railways make sense in a way solar roadways have never done.

“You’re fired!” Andrew wasn’t joking. At that moment, he wanted his personal care attendant, Christy, out of his life forever. “You’re fired!” He said it again for extra emphasis. Christy didn’t draw back. She needed this job. Hurricane Katrina had damaged her savings along with her house. But the retired PE teacher wasn’t daunted. She was a tough nut.
When eight-year-old Andrew was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome (阿斯伯格综合征), people told his mom, Cindy, to get him on the list for an attendant to provide after-school care. However, in New Orleans, the wait can be years. Cindy chose a program through Volunteers of America. Even so, it was eight years before they were matched with Christy. Meanwhile, Andrew’s family did their best to protect him from life’s difficulties.
There was a lot to worry about. Could Andrew graduate from high school? Would he ever have a job? Could he live independently? “Andrew wouldn’t take a step without his mother’s permission,” Christy says. “So letting him experience failure is the only way he can learn to do things on his own.”
Soon, Cindy would no longer write Andrew’s papers for him. Christy wouldn’t be helping him with homework either. He complained, loudly at times. But then things began to change. Andrew would start on his homework after school. Christy showed him how to get organized. And she coached him on how to deal with disappointment. Once his work was done, Christy offered freedom. She’d take him to the bookstore, the movies, or out to eat his favorite food, sushi.
One step at a time, Andrew gained independence. He graduated from high school and entered community college. And he stopped trying to fire Christy. Last spring, Andrew moved into his own apartment, above the family’s garage. He’s working toward an associate’s degree in video game design. He’s studying to get his learner’s permit to drive. At 25, he says life has never been better. There is no doubt that Andrew and Christy have done it together.

The latest report finds that tiger population may have increased as much as 40% in seven years. There were 3,200 tigers in 2015 and about 4,500 in 2022. That’s the first growth in decades, which is a turning point for an endangered species.
Every few years since 1968, the tiger’s status is reassessed as it continues to be classified as endangered. Since the first assessment in 1998, governments and non-profit groups have focused on conservation steps. Starting in 2010, many governments committed to the Global Tiger Recovery Program. Their goal has been to work to double the number of wild tigers globally-reaching at least 6,000 animals-by 2022, but they can’t achieve it.
With an average of 4,500 tigers, about 3,140 of them are estimated to be adults. South Asia’s tigers account for 76% of the world’s tiger population. The area’s tigers have seen growth, particularly in India and Nepal. In Northeast Asia, population figures are mostly stable in Russia and likely to be increasing along the China border. The worst situation is in Southeast Asia where tiger numbers have dropped in Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam.
Scientists point out it is significant to continue conservation efforts. There was a significant decline in the tiger number in the last century and tigers remain endangered. The Malayan and Sumatran tigers are still listed as critically endangered. This is due to habitat loss and poaching(偷猎)of tigers, with these threats persisting in several parts of the tiger’s range. Besides poaching, tigers are threatened by habitat loss and are killed for their attack to humans.
“While a large amount of protection and funding are still needed before announcing ‘mission accomplished,’ these numbers signal previously incomprehensible stability in the tiger population, and even increases in some protected areas,” said Goodrich, a scientist. “This is nothing short of a turning moment in the protection of tigers, given the overwhelming threats they face at every turn.”
12.What do we know about wild tigers around the world?
A.They are still on the endangered list.
B.They attract more attention than before.

D.Conservation steps don’t work well on them.
13.Where can we see an increase in tiger population?
    A.In Russia. B.In Nepal. C.In Cambodia. D.In Vietnam.
14.What is implied in Goodrich’s words in the last paragraph?
A.More protected areas should be set up for tigers.
B.It’s a short way to go before tigers are well protected.
C.There exist some chances every time some threats appear.
D.The increasing population means much to the protection of tigers.
15.What is the best title for the text?
A.Tigers Are Stuck in Different Situations
B.World’s Tigers Are Eager for Conservation
    C.World’s Tiger Population Has Increased
D.Many Things Threaten the Survival of Tigers

It is a tough time to be a tree. Earth has lost a third of its forests over the past 10, 000 years — half of that just since 1900. We logged them for wood. We cut them to make way for farms and cattle. We cleared land to build homes and roads. Although deforestation has decreased globally from its peak in the 1980s, trends vary by region. In Indonesia, which had been cutting down forests for oil palm plantations (棕榈种植园), primary forest loss has declined since 2016. From August 2020 to July 2021, the Brazilian Amazon lost 5,000 square miles of rainforest, a 22 percent increase over the previous year. Since 1990, we’ve cut down more forest globally than there is forest in the United States.
Trees are growing faster as they absorb extra CO2. That “greening” of the planet has so far helped slow climate change. But climate change is killing trees. And what has made forest scientists increasingly uneasy is the quickening pace of extreme events — fire, more powerful storms, and, most notably, severe heat and drought, which can worsen the effects of all the rest, shifting forests that have been around since the last ice age to entirely new states.
Climate change still poses less of a threat to forests than logging and land clearing, but the threat is growing fast. Satellite data show that Earth’s tree-covered area actually expanded from 1982 to 2016 by 7 percent, an area larger than Mexico. But that doesn’t mean forests are doing fine. The data don’t distinguish between natural forests and industrial tree farms, such as the millions of palm, eucalyptus (桉树), and pine trees planted as crops while rainforest is cleared. Also, the data don’t show which forests were lost to chain saws and which were killed by climate-related events.
16.What does the underlined word “deforestation” mean in paragraph 1?
A.The state of forests. B.The growth of trees.
C.The removal of trees. D.The disappearance of forests.

    A.Positive. B.Cautious.
    C.Approving. D.Indifferent.
19.Where does this text probably come from?
A.A history book. B.A science fiction.
C.A science report. D.A health magazine.

Dave was my rock. When I got upset, he stayed calm. When I was worried, he said that everything would be OK. When I wasn’t sure what to do, he helped me figure it out. Like all married couples, we had our ups and downs. Still Dave gave me the experience of being deeply understood, truly supported and completely loved. I thought I’d spend the rest of my life resting my head on his shoulder.
Since Dave passed away, so many people have said to me, “I can’t imagine.” They mean they can’t imagine this happening to them, can’t imagine how I am standing there talking to them rather than curled (蜷缩) up in a ball somewhere. I remember feeling the same way when I saw a colleague back at work after losing a child or a friend buying coffee after being diagnosed (诊断) with cancer. When I was on the other side, my reply became, “I can’t imagine either, but I have no choice.”
I had no choice but to wake up every day. No choice but to get through the shock, the sorrow, the survivor guilt. No choice but to try to move forward and be a good mother at home. No choice but to try to focus and be a good colleague at work.
Loss, sorrow, and disappointment are extremely personal. We all have unique circumstances and reactions to them. Still, the kindness and bravery of those who shared their experiences helped pull me through mine. Some are total strangers who offered wisdom and advice publicly—sometimes even in books with horrible titles. Others are my closest friends who opened their hearts, patient yet insistent that the darkness would pass, but that I would have to help it along. That even in the face of the most shocking misfortune of my life, I could have some control over its impact.

    A.They were lacking in imagination.
B.They felt sympathy for the author.
    C.They couldn’t believe Dave’s passing away.
    D.They didn’t understand the author’s response.
25.How did the author get over the sorrow?
A.By reading books with horrible titles.
B.By sharing her experience with others.
C.By waiting for the darkness to pass slowly.
D.By controlling the effects of the misfortune.
26.Which word can best describe the author’s attitude to misfortune?
    A.Positive. B.Cautious.
    C.Doubtful. D.Indifferent.

When Katja Edler noticed tightness around her right shoulder in 2017, she assumed she’d been spending too much time at her desk. The 44-year-old book editor worked from home. About three months later, her symptoms were worse: “I got up one morning in a lot of pain and couldn’t lift my arm.”
Edler met with a surgeon, who took an X-ray and then identified the problem: she had frozen shoulder. The condition affects up to 5% of people and occurs when the connective tissue surrounding the shoulder-joint capsule becomes inflamed (发炎的). Over time, this tissue thickens and hardens, causing pain and restricted movement. Women are four times more likely to have frozen shoulder than men, and people with heart disease are at higher risk. “It’s surprisingly common in people in their 40s to 60s, especially in people over the age of 60, said physiotherapist Karen McCreesh. She said patients typically describe the discomfort as “burning” and it is often worse at night. While it’s rare to have a recurrence (复发) in the same shoulder, about 10 to 15 per cent of patients will develop it on the other side, according to Dr. Rangan.
Early treatment improves the symptoms faster, but identifying the condition can be a challenge, since it’s hard to know how it develops. It’s more likely to happen if your shoulder has been immobile because of a broken arm after a fall. But in most cases, the problem seems to come out of nowhere.
There remains no known way to prevent the condition, which is why an early diagnosis (诊断) is so important. Dr. Rangan suggests “Taking your shoulders through a range of movement every day to make sure they don’t tighten up. If you notice anything, seek help.”
27.What can be inferred from the first two paragraphs?
A.Edler identified the problem by herself.
B.Males take higher risk to have frozen shoulder.
C.Frozen shoulder is caused by restricted movement.
D.The people in their 60s are more likely to have frozen shoulder.
28.Why is it difficult to identify the condition of frozen shoulder?
A.It will not occur again. B.The symptoms will get worse.
C.It will develop on the other side. D.The causes of the symptoms vary.
29.What can be done if something gets wrong with your shoulders?
A.Consult for help. B.Wait for it to heal.
C.Identify the condition. D.Move your shoulders daily.
30.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To offer advice. B.To show concern.
C.To share experience. D.To share information.

Earth is lighted up by bioluminescence(生物发光)but, for many of us,seeing the natural phenomenon is a rare treat:Catching the glow(光)of a firefly or witnessing a dolphin swimming through electric blue waters is a thrill.
Researchers are currently engineering glowing flowers and decorative plants that can cast a green light onto our living rooms. Observing plant’s health via its glow can be a way to instantly measure its health, and the side effect is anybody who wants a healthy glowing plant in their living room can have one.
A study published on Monday in Nature Biotechnology shows that this goal is well on its way to being a reality. The study authors announce they’ve created a method that causes plants to glow much brighter, and for a longer period of time, than previous efforts.Plants adapted by this method should be available for purchase within a few years.
The research was conducted through a teamwork between three scientific institutions and Plant,a biotech startup in Moscow. When this team examined a poisonous mushroom, they discovered that caffeic acid is responsible for its bioluminescence. In this new study, the team employed that information and inserted(嵌入)enzymes(酶) —which are specific to the mushroom —into the DNA of tobacco plants. In turn, the enzymes were able to interact with the caffeic acid in the tobacco plants, and cause them to glow both in the dark and in the daylight.
This method, the scientists claimed, made the plants 10 times brighter than previous efforts and the continuous light production didn’t harm the health of the plants. Interestingly, the light decreased as the leaves aged—but it also increased when the leaves were damaged. In turn, the team suggested this method could also help other researchers monitor plant responses to various pressures and changes in the environment. If a plant is short of water or a hungry sheep is harming a plant, bioluminescence could warn of this damage before it’s too late.
31.How can people quickly identify a decorative flower’s health condition?
A.By monitoring its glow. B.By making it greener.
C.By testing the chemicals in it. D.By putting it in the living room.
32.What can we expect of the adapted glowing plants?
A.They may take the place of lamps. B.They will appear on the market.
C.They can light up a whole living room. D.They glow less bright than previous efforts.
33.What did the team do with the mushroom in the new study?
A.They inserted caffeic acid into it. B.They made it give out brighter light.
C.They grew it on the tobacco plants farm. D.They put its enzymes into the tobacco plants.
34.What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.Warning of potential damage from glowing plants.
B.Increasing light when glowing plants receive damage.
C.Effects of continuous light production on the glowing plants.
D.Benefits of combining specific enzymes with caffeic acid in plants.

They are the world’s fittest people. But even Olympic athletes have had their share of difficult, heart-breaking or embarrassing moments.
    1904 Olympics, St Louis, USA
American Fred Lorz crossed the finish line of the Olympic marathon with a time of 3 hours and 13 minutes. He had beaten the second runner by 15 minutes. Lorz looked happy and fresh, and smiled for the photographers. Just before they gave him the gold medal, the race officials arrived and took away the medal, and Lorz was banned from races for a year. Then an official told the truth. He had travelled by car for 11 miles of the marathon!
    1908 Olympics, London, England
The Italian Dorando Pietri was one of the unluckiest marathon runners. When he arrived in the stadium, he was very tired. The people were cheering, but Pietri couldn’t continue. He fell down and got up again four times. Finally, around seven metres from the finish line, he fell down again and didn’t move. Worried officials ran over and picked him up. He crossed the finish line and won the gold medal. But a few hours later the Olympic officials had to take it away from him again. They said he couldn’t be the winner because Olympic officials had helped him cross the line.
    2000 Olympics, Sydney, Australia
Eric Moussambani of Equatorial Guinea became one of the most loved athletes of the 2000 games. His race was the 100-metre freestyle swim. He jumped into the pool and started swimming. After the first 50 metres he was very tired. He went more and more slowly and almost stopped in the middle of the pool. The officials worried that he was drowning. But Moussambani continued and finished the race with a time of 1 minute and 52 seconds, the slowest in the history of the Olympics. Still, Moussambani was happy. He had never swum in a pool of that size before.

C.He fell down after finishing the race.
D.He received help as he crossed the finish line.
40.How did people look at Moussambani?
A.They felt sorry for him. B.They admired him greatly.
C.They showed no interest in him. D.They had mixed feelings about him.

If you have trouble falling asleep, listen up. You might fall asleep 15 minutes earlier and wake up far less during the night if you put on a pair of socks at bedtime.
To understand why, you first need to grasp the relationship between core body temperature and sleep. During daylight hours, the human body has an average temperature of 37℃. But your core body temperature drops as much as 1.2℃ over one night’s sleep. This gradual decrease is a key part of how we sleep. Put simply, the faster you can lower your core body temperature, the faster you will fall asleep.
One way that your body controls its temperature is through blood vessels in the skin. If your body is too hot, your blood vessels widen, pushing the warmer blood nearer the skin’s surface, helping it to cool. If your body is too cold, the opposite happens. Your blood vessels narrow, restricting the flow of blood to the surface.
The palms of your feet are one of your body’s most efficient heat exchangers, since they are hairless and less protected than other skin surfaces. Researchers have shown that warming the feet before going to sleep using a warm foot bath or by wearing socks promotes blood vessel widening, which in turn lowers the body’s core temperature faster than going to sleep with cold, bare feet.
Scientists suspect that socked feet have a sleep-benefiting effect on the brain as well. The warm-sensitive neurons (神经元) in the brain become more active when there’s a temperature difference between the body’s core and the feet. Researchers have found that these neurons become more active as we get sleepy and slow down as we wake up, so that warming up the feet before bedtime may give them an extra drive, making you feel sleepier.
In a small study, researchers found that wearing a pair of special “sleeping socks” not only sped up the coming of sleep, but increased overall sleep time by an average of 30 minutes and cut nighttime waking episodes in half. If you’re worried about becoming too warm, look for socks made of natural fibers.

Seoul, South Korea — Most weekends, the narrow alleys of Itaewon, the neon-lit nightlife district in South Korea’s capital Seoul, are busy with partygoers and tourists. Now it’s the site of one of the country’s worst disasters.
At least 151 were killed in the crush, with dozens more injured. Authorities have now launched an urgent investigation to find out how what was supposed to be a night of celebration went so horribly wrong, as families across the country mourn and search for missing loved ones.
Here’s what we know so far.
Itaewon has long been a popular place to celebrate Halloween, especially as the holiday became more popular in Asia in recent years. Some even fly into Seoul from other countries in the region for the festivities.
But for the past two years, celebrations were softened by pandemic restrictions (防疫限制措施) on crowd sizes and mask orders.
Saturday night marked the first Halloween since the country lifted these restrictions – lending it particular significance for many eager young people in Seoul, as well as international visitors including foreign residents and tourists.
Hotels and ticketed events in the neighborhood had been booked solid in advance, and large crowds were expected.
Witnesses told that there was very little — if any — crowd control before the mass of people turned deadly.
Videos and photos posted to social media show people crammed together, standing shoulder to shoulder in the narrow street.
After the first emergency calls came in around 10:24 p.m., authorities rushed to the scene — but the large crowd of people made it difficult to reach those who needed help.
The thousands of people in Halloween costumes contributed to the widespread sense of confusion and disorder. One witness described seeing a police officer shouting during the disaster — but some celebrators mistook him for another partygoer.
The cause of the crush is still under investigation, though officials said there were no gas leaks or fires on site.
51.What do we know about the deadly Halloween disaster in Seoul?
A.Rescue and first aid were provided by authorities immediately.
B.As much as 151 were killed, most of whom were foreign residents and tourists.
C.For the past two years, public events have been banned to ensure people safety at Itaewon.
D.Celebrating Halloween is not unusual for Itaewon.
52.Why were the crowds so big on this Saturday night?
A.Because tens of thousands of people flooded into the area to celebrate Halloween.
B.Because there were not any officials trying to limit the number of people entering the area.
C.Because the official was not monitoring crowd amount in real time.
D.Because the country lifted pandemic restrictions.
53.What does the underlined word “ solid ” in paragraph 7 mean?
A.completely hard, not soft B.without any spaces
C.not liquid or gas D.certain or safe
    54.What was the official response?
A.They had sent a large number of police and security forces to this part of Seoul.
B.They still didn’t know how the traditional Halloween celebrations turned into a disaster.

C.They had called an emergency meeting.
    D.They had identified the dead.

Like many who share their homes with a cat, I often talk to the miniature predator (小型掠食者)who sleeps on my pillow. Mostly, I ask Ophelia whether she wants food or snuggles (依偎). I know she hears me—her oversize ears rotate (转动 ) like furry satellite dishes in my direction as soon as I open my mouth. What’s less clear is whether she is aware I am addressing her.
A new study in Animal Cognition shows that she probably does.
Charlotte de Mouzon, fellow cat lover and ethologist—a scientist who studies animal behavior—has devoted her career to understanding the cat-human bond from the kitty’s perspective.
De Mouzon designed a series of experiments to test how pet cats of various breeds(品种) responded to hearing recordings of their owners and of strangers talking to them.
She first recorded the owners speaking specific phrases, such as “Do you want to play?”, “Do you want a treat?”, and “See you later.” Their voices were recorded twice: once as if they were talking to their cat, and once as if they were speaking to a person.
Recordings in hand, De Mouzon conducted the next stage of the experiments in the cats’ homes, where the animals were comfortable and would respond naturally. At each home, she played audio recordings of both the cat’s owner and strangers speaking the same phrases, while video recording the cat’s responses.
The cats responded when they heard their owners using cat-directed speech, but not human-to-human speech. They also did not show a response when they heard a stranger’s voice, whether using cat talk or adult talk. This indicated that the cats could recognize when their owners were talking to them, de Mouzon says.
“This really important,” says Marsha Reijgwart, an ethologist at Purr Doctors, an educational research facility in the Netherlands, who wasn’t involved in the study.
“It’s an indication that cats really can distinguish that the sound they’re hearing is relevant to them.”
And de Mouzon said her research should give cat owners confidence that their pets are likely listening to them.
“Even knowing cats aren’t human babies,” she says, “we can still talk to them in a way they’re sensitive to and that can reinforce (加固) our bond.”
55.According to the writer, can the cat recognize its owner’s voice?
    A.Yes. B.No. C.Seldom. D.Doubtfully.
56.Which of the following statements is True?
A.When the owner of the cat says “See you later.”, his cat will respond.
B.When a guest says “See you later.”, the host’s cat will respond.
C.When the owner of the cat says “See you later.” as if he were talking to his cat, his cat will respond.
D.When the owner of the cat says “See you later.” as if he were talking to his guest, his cat will respond.
57.How did De Mouzon draw the conclusion that the cats are sensitive to their owners voice?
A.She makes friends with the writer.
B.She carries out a series of experiments.
C.She makes friends with some cats.
D.She records the owners speaking specific phrases.
58.What is the best title for the text?
A.Your cat can recognize your voice. B.Cat – a kind of smart pet
C.Can you speak cat-directed langue? D.Your cat can understand you.

35.细节理解题。根据文章What is an advance train ticket?部分的“Advance train tickets are fares that go on sale well before the day of travel. They’re only available as single tickets and are non-refundable(不可退款的). (火车票预售是指在出发前一天就开始销售的车票。它们只能作为单程票购买,并且不可退款。)”可知火车票预售票只能作为单程票购买,所以选项A不对;根据Why book train tickets in advance?部分的“Although not all train services will let you reserve a seat, you’ll stand a better chance of getting one when booking in advance.(虽然不是所有的火车服务都让你预订座位,但提前预订会有更好的机会。)”可知火车票预售票不能保证持票人一定会有座位,所以选项B不对;根据“When do advance train tickets become available?部分的“Only a limited number of tickets will be available,(门票数量有限,)”可知火车票预售票在发布时并不容易获得,所以C项不对,根据文章第一段“Do you know that you can save money by planning well ahead and booking an advance train ticket? Plus, we’d recommend booking travel before you get to the station, as this will shorten your time spent there.(你知道提前计划并提前预订火车票可以省钱吗?另外,我们建议你在到达车站之前预订行程,因为这将缩短你在车站停留的时间。)”以及Why book train tickets in advance?部分的“Booking train tickets in advance on our app can help you save time at the station.(在我们的应用程序上提前预订火车票可以帮助你节省在车站的时间。)”可知火车票预售票既省时又有效,所以D项正确。故选D项。
36.推理判断题。根据文章第一段“Do you know that you can save money by planning well ahead and booking an advance train ticket? Plus, we’d recommend booking travel before you get to the station, as this will shorten your time spent there. 43.推理判断题。根据文章第五段最后一句“Researchers have found that these neurons become more active as we get sleepy and slow down as we wake up, so that warming up the feet before bedtime may give them an extra drive, making you feel sleepier.(研究人员发现,当我们困倦时,这些神经元会变得更加活跃,而当我们醒来时,这些神经元就会变慢,所以睡前给脚热身可能会给它们额外的动力,让你感觉更困。)”可推知,大脑对温度敏感的神经元被激活时,可能会引起睡意,这样就可以帮助我们睡眠。故选B项。
44.细节理解题。根据文章最后一段第一句“In a small study, researchers found that wearing a pair of special “sleeping socks” not only sped up the coming of sleep, but increased overall sleep time by an average of 30 minutes and cut nighttime waking episodes in half.(在一项小型研究中,研究人员发现,穿一双特殊的“睡眠袜”不仅能加快入睡的速度,还能平均增加30分钟的整体睡眠时间,并将夜间醒着的次数减少一半。)”可知,穿袜子有助于人们睡得更久,醒得更少。故选D项。
