Is fashion important to you?____1____From those who wear trendy ripped jeans and loose-fitting T-shirts to those who wear smart tailored suits and expensive designer outfits, each individual can have their own style.
____2____And what impact can this have on their self-expression?
Arguably, one factor that influences what people wear is the need to impress others. People who dress well and keep up with the latest styles seem to be more noticed than those who are not concerned about their appearance. ____3____In this way they assume an identity which makes them feel they impress. Yet, by copying general looks, people actually can’t show their individuality.
At the same time, fashion is perceived by some as a tool for success and one that represents wealth or respectable social position. For instance, people intentionally try to raise their status by wearing famous brands or expensive clothes which are admired by others.____4____They are just the means to promote a specific image of power and control. In this case, fashion does not express personal individuality but could perhaps be said to give a false impression of appearance for a specific purpose.
That being said, following fashion may not have anything to do with copying current trends but with using them as an inspiration to create outfits expressing individuality.____5____Adding glam here and there, rolling up a pair of trousers or even wearing two different shoes can be considered a form of self-expression demonstrating originality.
Having considered all this, to my way of thinking, fashion can be used as a means of communication and a way to communicate your self-image to people around you. As a famous designer once said, “Fashion is instant language.”
A.Is it a trend we must follow?
B.But why are people following fashion?
C.For most people it is, at least to some extent.
D.For this reason, people wear fashionable clothing.
E.These clothes are not actually giving a personal statement of the wearer.
F.There are always fashion followers, even though fashion is constantly changing.
G.An example of this is reforming fashionable pieces and making small personalized changes.

Good health is one big advantage to playing sports. ____12____ Scientists in Finland discovered that even between twins, the exercising one had more muscle, more energy, and healthier hearts and lungs. The one who did not play any sports had less energy and more fat.
____13____ Another reason is that they want to be social. People who play on a team become friends with their team members and meet players from different teams. Sports games become enjoyable social events, not just competitions.
An additional reason for playing sports is that it makes people feel good. It does this in two interesting ways. First, playing sports makes people feel good about themselves. ____14____ Second, when we exercise, our brains produce chemicals that make us feel good. When people run around for two hours playing a basketball game, they often feel great even if they lose the game.
There are a lot of other reasons why people play sports, but studies show that the biggest reason is enjoyment. When asked why they play sports, most people said they play because it’s fun. ____15____

    Wasted-time worry
The idea that time is our most precious resource can bring with it a sense of time-pressure. We are always told “Time is money and time is running out”, so we must manage it well. We take time-management courses, download the latest productivity app and divide our day into blocks, so our time is never wasted.
______16______ . It tells us we should be doing more with our time or doing something else. We can spend an afternoon regretting for the time we wasted that morning, spoiling hours that would otherwise have been available to us. Sometimes it’s not just the hours we worry about wasting, ______17______ —the countless minutes spent on tiny chores, answering emails, replying to texts, waiting for other people. Often, when we worry about wasting time, we are comparing ourselves to how productive we assume other people are. It makes us feel that everyone is using their time well except ourselves.
We need to shift away from trying to maximize our time and reduce our worry about wasting it. We don’t have to view every moment we don’t spend the way we expected to as a waste. There may be value in those moments too. ______18______ . In a society that emphasizes the productive use of time, we can easily forget that time we enjoyed wasting is not wasted time.
Then how much should we be working? Researchers say on most days, three to four hours of high-quality, focused mental work is about our maximum. ______19______ .
We often encounter empty time, throwing us into boredom, panic or anxiety, or add to our wasted-time worry. ______20______ . For example, we can become more comfortable with empty moments rather than rushing to make the best of every second. We can allow us to pause and think. We can see our commuting time as a chance to let our mind wander rather than checking social media.
A.Working beyond that can be a waste
B.Working to maximum is the secret to success
C.but the scraps of time that get lost in between

G.Yet in our crazy attempts to account for every hour, we fall into wasted-time worry

Tips on How to Study Smarter
Having good study skills is always helpful. And it’s more important in the present situation, where online classes are growing. Students are likely to learn without a teacher or parent watching over. ____21____ Here are some tips to develop good study skills.
    · Practice, practice, practice! Musicians, practice their instruments. Athletes practice sports skills. The same should go for learning. ____22____ In one study, students took practice tests over several weeks. On the final test, they scored better than those who studied in the normal way.
    · Test yourself. Before big tests, you may often cover up the notes, and then try to recall them. This practice can help nearly everyone. You can put questions down on one side of the paper and the answers on the other side. ____23____ Teachers often dig deeper. They don’t just ask shallow questions.
    · Learn from mistakes. A secret of science: Mistakes help understanding. If you don’t find out what the answer is, you’re wasting your time. Checking the answers can make your study time more efficient. Check to see if you are right. You can then focus on what you get wrong. ____24____
·____25____ Students know some good study skills, yet many of you don’t actually do these things. Often you fail to plan ahead. So do make plans. And try to stick to a routine, too. For example, you can have a set time and place where you do schoolwork and study. And get enough sleep—not just the night before the test but for weeks or months on end.
    A.Focus on your plan.
    B.You can add more skills.
C.Make a plan and stick to it.
D.In fact, mistakes are actually a primary key to learning.
E.Try to test yourself in the way the teacher asks questions.
F.So you will have to manage your time and study more on your own.
G.If you want to be able to remember information, the best thing you can do is practice.

Over the past years, countless studies conducted have shown the positive effects that laughing has on one’s physical and mental health. Are you ready to laugh more? Below you’ll find five ways to bring more laughter into your life.
Smile more. Smiling is not laughing. ____26____ When you smile, happy changes begin to take place naturally, both internally and externally. In addition, you can think of smiling as a warm-up for laughing.
Learn to laugh at yourself. Most of us take ourselves too seriously. ____27____ Learning to laugh at yourself takes some of the pressure off. You can look for the funny side of things. When you’re upset about something, ask yourself “How is this situation funny?” Humor can even turn a negative into a positive.
Share stories from the past. Do you remember one time in high school that you and your best friend wore false hair and matching clothes around your neighborhood? Or, how about when your best friend sat on a painted bench by accident? ____28____
Take up something new. When you try something new — whether it’s to draw or learn to roller skate — your original attempts will likely be clumsy (笨拙的) and even ridiculous (荒谬的). ____29____ So taking up something new is likely to result in laughs.
____30____ We are heavily influenced by the people we are with, so by hanging out with funny people, we can add more laughter into our days. That positive and silly energy will immediately rub off on (感染) us and it can cause us to want to feel happier and sillier throughout our days.
    A.That is funny.
B.It has a lot of benefits.
    C.Follow funny people on Twitter.
    D.Surround yourself with funny people.
E.These reminders can make us feel silly and childlike.
F.For better results, think of a funny moment from the past.
G.So our ability to find the humor in difficult situations can be limited.

    How to love your parents
It is well said that family is the kingdom of father, the world of mother and the paradise (天堂) of children. However, do you really know what each letter of the word “family” stands for? Obviously, F stands for Father; A is and; M means mother; I, L and Y are short for “I Love You”! Now, it’s quite easy for you to be aware how to deal with the tensions between you and your parents. _____31_____ However, loving your parents is a normal and fulfilling part of life. You love them for the fact that they created you, raised you, and are in part, a source of who you are.
Here are some ways to love your parents.
_____32_____ A gentle “good morning” and “I love you” will warm a coldest heart. Remember that they brought you into this world. Without your parents, you might still wander at an unknown corner in an unknown world.
Respect them more and cherish these moments. You can use these moments to learn from them, preparing yourself for when you’re off on your own. It’s OK to get angry but angry actions don’t help you or your parents. Act calmly, cool off, write down your feelings, or talk to a friend. ______33______
Obey their requests. It will make your attitude better and earn you more respect from them. It may seem like you are going through a hard time when you don’t get what you want or you have to clean. However, you had better remember they keep a roof over your head when it’s cold, raining, snowing or too hot. Understand that parents are human beings who will make mistakes as well. ______34______ Since you can forgive your friends, why not forgive your parents?
Keep company with them. Do things with your parents like watching TV, or going somewhere with them. _____35_____ Listen to their old stories, which might help you find they are your tutors in this way or another.

F.Please remember parents are as important as friends.
G.You may think that your parents are mean-spirited at times.

Nearly five years ago, I booked a retreat (僻静处) to work on my book, Tracking Wonder. I knew I worked best with limited distraction, but when I finally was able to carve time away from the world to do this creative work, I found it very difficult to focus. ___36___ Now I know that we need to work on something counter-intuitive (违反直觉的): our ability to be bored.
    ___37___
    Ⅰ. Reboot(重启) your mental health.
Just as our muscles need rest days between workouts to grow stronger, our minds need periods of idleness to process the world around us.
Innovators in times of crisis and adversity actually grant themselves space to be bored and daydream deliberately. This kind of daydreaming can lead to positive mental feelings of hope, renewal, and forward motion, but it requires boredom and space.
    Ⅱ. ___38___
The capacity to be bored and the capacity to be creative go hand in hand. Want to increase your creativity? ___39___ Embrace those periods of boredom that are built into your commute, break time, or meals. Turn off the podcast, stop scrolling through the news feeds, and let your mind lie fallow (休耕的) so that the seeds of your next idea have space to grow.
Ⅲ. Reconnect with what matters to you.
These days, current events—and the resulting analysis, opinions, and Twitter hot takes—come at us so quickly that it’s difficult to process one issue before the next takes its place. ___40___ Rather than reaching for stimulation (刺激) by searching for the next event to be entertained or enraged (激怒) by, boredom gives you space to think through the information you’re gathering and begin to challenge ideas. The next time you find yourself compelled to reach for your phone, I challenge you to try sitting with what matters to you, and letting your idle mind discover surprising connections.
    A.Become more creative.
    B.I completely lacked creativity.
C.Here are three ways to release your creativity.
D.The answer may not be more stimulation, but less.
E.Reach for our phones to check a fact during a conversation.
F.Learning to let yourself be bored can have three surprising benefits.
G.But to truly be an informed citizen, you need to allow time for idleness.

A European street today may smell like coffee, fresh-baked bread and cigarettes. ___41___? Historians and scientists across Europe have now gotten together with perfumers (香水制造者) and museums for a unique project called “Odeuropa”—to capture what Europe smelled like between the 16th and early 20th centuries.
To successfully finish this three-year-long project, the researchers need to find all the old scents of Europe-and even recreate some of this ancient smellscape. To do this, they will first build artificial intelligence that will be trained to scan historical texts, written in seven different languages, for any descriptions of smells. ___42___.
The “Encyclopedia (百科全书) of Smell Heritage” will include the meaning of certain scents and will trace the stories behind scents, places and olfactory (嗅觉的) practices. ___43___, enabling future generations to access and learn about the scented past.
___44___, such as doctors. In the past, herbs were often used by European doctors to heal the sick. They smell special and their scents should be included in the encyclopedia. But just as history is filled with interesting and pleasant smells, it’s also filled with stinky (非常难闻的) ones.
“I find it particularly interesting to make the audience know about a whole range of scents such as a stinky canal,” said Caro Verbeek, a scent historian and member of the Odeuropa team. “It will make us more aware of how we relate to smell today and how differently smells were appreciated in the past. With current technology, almost every scent can be produced. ___45___. People haven’t always talked or written about them.”
A.It expressed a longing for the countryside life
B.But what did it smell like hundreds of years ago
C.Why is it filled with interesting and pleasant smells
D.It will become a record for the smell heritage of Europe
E.The more difficult part of the project will be to find descriptions of scents
F.The encyclopedia will also include descriptions of people for whom smell was important
G.The team will then use the information to create an encyclopedia of smells from Europe’s past

Do your homework, show up for class on time and keep your schoolwork organized. These will help you turn in assignment (任务) on time. During class, pay attention and ask questions to further your understanding of the material.
Take part in extra-curricular activities you enjoy.
Make your extra-curricular activities a chance for you to relax. Maybe you don’t know what activities are suitable for you. ____49____ You can always find classes at school or beyond. Also, you can use the activities to make your voice heard.

Having a vegetable garden offers many health benefits. Here are reasons why a home vegetable garden beats even the farmers’ market when it comes to your health and well-being.
___51___ Gardening is very physical. What makes gardening better than a gym workout is that it happens outdoors with fresh air and sunshine. Whether you are weeding in the down- ward dog position, or digging bags of soil, a garden delivers the full gym experience, from cardio right down to yoga.
Your garden provides you with a raw diet. Most homegrown crops taste better than store-bought, but no vegetable takes this to the next level like sweet peas. ___52___, but most gardeners find that even a few vines (藤) are worth the space. A handful of freshly-shelled, raw sweet peas bursting into your mouth on a summer morning have few rivals in the food kingdom.
___53___ The average consumer remains at the mercy of the produce buyer at the local market, but once the home gardener discovers the diversity of colors and tastes that can be homegrown, a nutrient-rich vegetable choice opens up. Heirloom (原种的) tomatoes range in color from deep purple and nearly black to golden yellow and pale white. Besides the color, there is another benefit. ___54___ .
Your garden allows you to give. ___55___, but nothing feels as great as when you share food. Imagine how it feels for others to receive fresh homegrown vegetables. A basket of heir- loom cherry tomatoes can disappear faster than a box of donuts deep fried in fat.
    A.It’s nice to receive gifts
B.We know that it feels good to give
C.Your garden lets you eat the rainbow
D.The vegetable garden makes you a chef
E.Growing vegetables helps you take exercise
F.Experts may not recommend sweet peas for small gardens
G.Nutritionists agree that colorful vegetables are rich in nutrition

Congratulations! You’ve gotten to college, and now you never have to read another book in your life! ____56____ Instead of a book being something you have to read, think about college literature classes as your opportunity to get to read. Here are some ways to get the most out of the literature class.
Take a lecture course. ____57____ Even if you haven’t taken other literature courses, specialized lectures can be a great place to start. If you’re considering a literature lecture, consider one on a single author, or a single genre, or a single time period. Even if you don’t come in with a lot of background knowledge, that’s okay, because the topic is narrow enough so that you can launch right into the material without mastering everything under the sun first.
____58____ Don’t just rely on your friends for this; instead, you should turn to people who are juniors and seniors in departments with a lot of literature courses and ask them which professors they’ve had very positive experiences with.
Take a literature class with a book on the syllabus that you’ve read before but hated. You know you should like The Sound and the Fury, which you read in junior year of high school. But somehow, you just couldn’t get into it then. Or you knew that Walt Whitman is supposed to be great, but you’ve never clicked with “I Hear America Singing.” This is your opportunity to re-discover the books and authors that you’ve completely written off. ____59____
In short, don’t be afraid to take a college literature class. ____60____ Instead, give yourself a chance to explore!
A.All the excuses are just getting in the way.
B.But don’t be afraid to take a specialized lecture.
C.You might find something in them that you love after all.
D.But that’s exactly the opposite of what books can do for you in college.
E.Don’t be frightened by the fact that you have nowhere to hide — embrace it!
F.Take a small seminar, even if you’ve never taken a college literature course before.
G.Ask people who are majors in humanities departments to recommend professors to you.

Learning in a classroom with teachers, friends and textbooks is of course one way to learn, but it is not the only way. ____61____ Whether you wander around the streets of Paris or spend a sunny afternoon on the Caribbean beaches, travelling will never fail you as a teacher.
____62____ If you are thinking of some personal development courses, you don’t need to do so. Travelling will change that as things like talking to complete strangers or asking them a favor are not an option but a necessity during your travels. Travel your way to a wonderful place somewhere and you’ll grow much better than through such courses.
Travelling will teach you how to control your fate if you have spent your life always being reactive ____63____ This is even more the case when you travel on your own. There’s no choice but to make decisions and take initiatives completely by yourself as you don’t have anyone to tell you what to do.
As you travel, you can better understand how the cultures around the world vary and where the common ground lies. Differences exist in cuisines, manners and lifestyles across different cultures. But in spite of the differences, you can find so many commonalities like a shared love for art and nature that bind all the different cultures together. ____64____
Perhaps the most important aspect of the education that comes with traveling is what you know about yourself. ____65____ Without travelling, you may even be completely unaware of your real character. If you haven’t really decided what you are going to do or what you want to be in the future, travelling extensively and preferably is one of the best ways to help you make a decision.
A.Travelling forces one to be independent.
B.Independence is a fundamental goal of education.
C.In fact, travelling is one of the best ways to learn things.
D.You may realize what you really enjoy and who you really are.
E.The understanding of diverse cultures plays a vital role in your education.
F.You may be a little shy and find it difficult to take part in social activities.
G.Travelling can be challenging if you are unfamiliar with the native language.

What does the Most Common Hugs Mean?
You’re meeting an old friend for lunch when they enthusiastically greet you with a long, tight hug. As the seconds go by, you’re left wondering if this is a friendly hug, or something else. The duration, body placement, and pressure during a hug can actually tell you if someone is feeling romantic or if they only view you as a friend. ____66____ In this article, we’ll decode what the most common hugs mean and tell you how to copy them so that you can hug like you mean it.
    The Classic Hug
____67____ You typically give and receive this hug when you say goodbye to someone, or are greeting them after a long time. The classic hug is one of the most common hugs, where you and the hugger wrap your arms around each other with your chests touching and heads side by side. Make it a great hug by embracing them tightly and holding the hug for several seconds.
    The Bear Hug
The bear hug is a long, tight hug that signals intimacy (亲密). ____68____ This hug is usually platonic, but means that you are close with the hugger and are sharing a happy moment together. Be careful not to squeeze too tightly during this hug.
    ____69____
A hug with multiple people signifies warmth and togetherness. You might initiate a group hug with close friends or family to show your happiness during a celebration, or strengthen your bonds during a farewell. Simply gather up your friends and form a tight ball, with your arms around everyone.
    The Quick Hug
A short hug is a friendly, social greeting. This is a common hug that doesn’t mean much beyond a polite acknowledgement. Your upper bodies may touch, but your lower does not. You might receive this hug from an old friend, a colleague, or family member. If you receive this hug from someone you’re interested in, they might just be in a hurry to get somewhere. ____70____ Pay attention to how the hug feels if you’re trying to figure out if the hug is friendly or romantic. With a romantic hug, you might feel a spark or chemistry between you.
    A.The Group Hug.
    B.The Patting Hug.
C.This is a warm, intimate hug between friends and family.
D.So knowing the meaning of hugs and how to respond is very important.
E.A long, snuggly hug means they feel comfortable and safe.
F.In this hug, someone wraps their arms all the way around you and squeezes tightly.
G.However, if they avoid eye contact and give a polite smile, they might see you as a friend.

Being self-motivated means being ready for driven, focused discussion and behavior. It also means being sharp and smart enough to be open to positive learning. ____71____. Luckily, you have every tool at your disposal to get started right now. Here we go!
____72____. It’s simple to know what we don’t want. Often it’s harder to pinpoint what exactly would make us happy and what exactly we’re striving for. However, to get anything done, we have to start thinking with positive goals, not negative fears. Instead of “I don’t want to be poor,” a better goal is “I’d like to save X amount of money each month.” See how the latter is much, much more doable? And less scary!
Track your progress. Whether you’re losing weight, working overtime, or studying for college, track what you’re doing! This will give you drive and show you the positive outcomes of your behavior. ____73____. Make sure to track your behaviors and their results. Not only do you need the results to look at and go, “Gee! I am awesome! Look at what I did!” you’ll need the results to see what does and does not work for you.
Keep good company. ____74____. We have that friend that desperately wants us to eat another piece of cheesecake. That person is not good company. To get going on our path to success, everyone needs cheerleaders along the way! Tell your friends and family what you’re trying to stay motivated with.
Use rewards. This is a point to be considered carefully. The last thing you want to do is to associate everything with a Snickers bar. However, rewards can be powerful when used sparingly and efficiently. ____75____.
    A.Get positive
    B.Focus on positive goals
    C.It will give you purpose
D.Being in this state of mind is the challenge
E.Unfortunately, people can also be demotivating
F.If you’ve made progress, you have nothing to be ashamed of
G.When you’ve completed something, be sure to do something you deserve

In many people’s eyes, plants are quiet and passive. They can’t talk. They can’t walk. ____76____.
Or can they? A new BBC documentary series, The Green Planet, gives us a new look at plants. Released on January 10 on Bilibili, it uncovers the wonderful and dramatic ways that plants behave.
Plants compete against each other to live. Each species has its own ways of defense. In rainforests, different kinds of plants race for sunlight. The forest floor is described as a “battlefield” in the series as only two percent of the sunlight filters (透过) through it. ____77____. But they are caught up in a vine (藤蔓) that tries to take a ride. Finally, they are both overtaken by a fast-growing balsa tree. As the balsa’s leaves are smooth, the vine can’t get a hold. Similarly, some trees make poisonous sap (毒汁) to protect themselves.
____78____. In deserts, the roots of Euphrates poplar are connected. If a tree finds water, it will share it with others through the roots. Studies also show that plants use fungus (真菌) in the soil as a way to “talk” to each other. It’s kind of like how Wi-Fi works. ____79____.

1.上文“Is fashion important to you?”(时尚对你重要吗?)提出了一个关于时尚的问题,下文“From those who wear trendy ripped jeans and loose-fitting T-shirts to those who wear smart tailored suits and expensive designer outfits, each individual can have their own style.(从穿时髦的破洞牛仔裤和宽松的T恤,到穿时髦的定制西装和昂贵的设计师套装,每个人都有自己的风格。)”
2.下文“And what impact can this have on their self-expression?(这对他们的自我表达有什么影响?)” Arguably, one factor that influences what people wear is the need to impress others.(可以说,影响人们穿着的一个因素是需要给别人留下深刻印象。)”
3.上文“Arguably, one factor that influences what people wear is the need to impress others. People who dress well and keep up with the latest styles seem to be more noticed than those who are not concerned about their appearance.(可以说,影响人们着装的一个因素是为了给别人留下深刻印象。穿着得体并紧跟最新时尚的人似乎比那些不注重外表的人更受关注。)”讲述穿着得体时尚会给人留下更深刻的印象,更受关注,下文“In this way they assume an identity which makes them feel they impress. Yet, by copying general looks, people actually can’t show their individuality.(通过这种方式,他们假设了一种身份,让他们觉得自己给人留下了深刻的印象。然而,通过模仿一般的外表,人们实际上无法展示自己的个性。)”讲述人们用这种方式想要给人留下深刻印象。因此空处应是说明一种方式,且与上文一致,故D项“For this reason, people wear fashionable clothing.(因此,人们穿时髦的衣服。)”
4.上文“At the same time, fashion is perceived by some as a tool for success and one that represents wealth or respectable social position. For instance, people intentionally try to raise their status by wearing famous brands or expensive clothes which are admired by others.(与此同时,时尚被一些人视为成功的工具,代表着财富或受人尊敬的社会地位。例如,人们故意通过穿名牌或昂贵的衣服来提高自己的地位。)”通过举例说明人们通过穿时尚的,昂贵的名牌来提高自己的地位,E项中的these clothes呼应上文的famous brands or expensive clothes,故E项“这些衣服实际上并不是对穿着者的个人陈述。”符合语境,承接上文,与下文“They are just the means to promote a specific image of power and control. (它们只是宣传权力和控制的特定形象的手段。)”是顺承关系。解释说明上文内容。故选E。
5.上文“That being said, following fashion may not have anything to do with copying current trends but with using them as an inspiration to create outfits expressing individuality.(话虽如此,追随时尚可能与复制当前的趋势无关,而是将其作为一种灵感来设计表达个性的服装。)” 符合语境,举例说明有些人只是进行个性化的改变,从而引出下文“Adding glam here and there, rolling up a pair of trousers or even wearing two different shoes can be considered a form of self-expression demonstrating originality.(在这里或那里增加魅力,卷起一条裤子,甚至穿两只不同的鞋子都可以被认为是一种展示创意的自我表达形式。)”

D“The answer may not be more stimulation, but less.(答案可能不是增加刺激,而是减少刺激。)”
40.根据前文“These days, current events—and the resulting analysis, opinions, and Twitter hot takes—come at us so quickly that it’s difficult to process one issue before the next takes its place.(如今,时事——以及由此产生的分析、观点和Twitter热议——来得如此之快,以至于我们很难在下一个问题出现之前处理好一个问题。)”提及无暇顾及加工处理问题,后文“Rather than reaching for stimulation by searching for the next event to be entertained or enraged by, boredom gives you space to think through the information you’re gathering and begin to challenge ideas.(无聊不是通过寻找下一个让你开心或愤怒的事件来寻求刺激,而是给你空间来思考你收集的信息,并开始挑战想法。)” G“But to truly be an informed citizen, you need to allow time for idleness.(但要真正成为一个有见识的公民,你需要留出空闲的时间。)”

41.根据空前“A European street today may smell like coffee, fresh-baked bread and cigarettes.(如今,欧洲的大街上可能弥漫着咖啡、刚烤好的面包和香烟的味道。)”可知今天的欧洲街头有着浓郁的面包、咖啡和香烟的味道,根据空后“Historians and scientists across Europe have now gotten together with perfumers (香水制造者) and museums for a unique project called “Odeuropa”—to capture what Europe smelled like between the 16th and early 20th centuries.(欧洲的历史学家和科学家们现在与香水商和博物馆一起开展了一个名为“Odeuropa”的独特项目——捕捉16世纪到20世纪初欧洲的气味。)” But what did it smell like hundreds of years ago?(但是几百年前它是什么味道呢?)
42.根据上文“To successfully finish this three-year-long project, the researchers need to find all the old scents of Europe-and even recreate some of this ancient smellscape. To do this, they will first build artificial intelligence that will be trained to scan historical texts, written in seven different languages, for any descriptions of smells.(为了成功地完成这个为期三年的项目,研究人员需要找到欧洲所有古老的气味,甚至重建一些古老的气味景观。为此,他们将首先建立人工智能,训练其扫描用七种不同语言编写的历史文本,以获取对气味的任何描述。)”可知为了搜寻几百年前欧洲的味道,科学家们会利用人工智能来扫描历史文献,寻找与气味有关的描述,根据下一段首句“The “Encyclopedia (百科全书) of Smell Heritage” will include the meaning of certain scents and will trace the stories behind scents, places and olfactory (嗅觉的) practices.(《嗅觉遗产百科全书》将包括特定气味的意义,并将追溯气味、地点、嗅觉实践背后的故事。)” The team will then use the information to create an encyclopedia of smells from Europe’s past.(然后这个团队会利用这些信息来创建一个关于欧洲过去的气味的百科全书。)

44.根据空后“such as doctors. In the past, herbs were often used by European doctors to heal the sick.(比如医生。在过去,草药经常被欧洲的医生用来治疗病人。)”可知在过去草药经常被医生用来救人,所以空处内容应该提到了某些人,F项The encyclopedia will also include descriptions of people for whom smell was important .(这一百科全书也会包括对一些人的描述,对这些人来说,气味很重要。)
45.根据空前“With current technology, almost every scent can be produced.(运用目前的技术,几乎每一种香味都可以生产出来。)”可知运用现代科技,几乎任何气味都能被制造出来,根据空后“People haven’t always talked or written about them.(人们并不总是谈论或描述他们。)” The more difficult part of the project will be to find descriptions of scents.(这个项目更困难的部分将是找到气味的描述。)

Whether you are weeding in the down- ward dog position, or digging bags of soil, a garden delivers the full gym experience, from cardio right down to yoga.(园艺是非常需要体力劳动的。
52.空前说“Most homegrown crops taste better than store-bought, but no vegetable takes this to the next level like sweet peas.(大多数自家种植的作物都比商店买的好吃,但没有一种蔬菜能像甜豌豆那样达到更高的水平。)”,空后说“but most gardeners find that even a few vines (藤) are worth the space. A handful of freshly-shelled, raw sweet peas bursting into your mouth on a summer morning have few rivals in the food kingdom.(但大多数园丁发现,即使只有几株藤蔓,也值得拥有这样的空间。在夏日的早晨,一把新鲜的、生的甜豌豆涌进你的嘴里,在美食王国里没有什么能与之匹敌的了。)”,因此空格处应该说到和甜豌豆相关的内容,F选项“Experts may not recommend sweet peas for small gardens(专家可能不建议小花园种植甜豌豆)”说明的是和甜豌豆相关的内容,因此承上启下,符合语境,故选F。
53.空格处是本段主题句,由空后的“The average consumer remains at the mercy of the produce buyer at the local market, but once the home gardener discovers the diversity of colors and tastes that can be homegrown, a nutrient-rich vegetable choice opens up. Heirloom (原种的) tomatoes range in color from deep purple and nearly black to golden yellow and pale white.(普通消费者仍然受当地市场上农产品买家的摆布,但一旦家庭园丁发现了可以自己种植的颜色和口味的多样性,营养丰富的蔬菜就有了选择。原种番茄的颜色从深紫色、接近黑色到金黄色和淡白色不等。)”可知,家庭菜园能带来各种颜色,C选项“Your garden lets you eat the rainbow(你的花园让你吃彩虹(般颜色的蔬菜))”概括了本段内容,可作为主题句,故选C。

    【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了一些充分利用文学课程的方法。
56.根据空格前句“You’ve gotten to college, and now you never have to read another book in your life! (你已经上大学了,现在你这辈子再也不用读一本书了)”可知,此处提到不需要再阅读书籍。空后句“Instead of a book being something you have to read, think about college literature classes as your opportunity to get to read, (不是把一本书看作是你必须读的东西,而是把大学文学课当做你阅读的机会)”可知,大学文学课是你阅读的机会。 因此应选择D选项“But that’s exactly the opposite of what books can do for you in college.(但这与书籍在大学里对你的作用恰恰相反)”承上启下,符合语境,故选D项。
57.根据空前句“Take a lecture course. (选择一门讲座课程)”和空后句“Even if you haven’t taken other literature courses, specialized lectures can be a great place to start. (即使你没有学过其他文学课程,专业讲座也是一个很好的入门课)”提到选择专门的讲座课程是一个好的选择,可知空处应是提及选择一门专门的讲座课程。因此应选择B选项“But don’t be afraid to take a specialized lecture.(但是不要害怕参加一个专门的讲座)”承上启下,符合语境,故选B项。
58.根据空后句“Don’t just rely on your friends for this, instead, you should turn to people who are juniors and seniors in departments with a lot of literature courses and ask them which professors they’ve had very positive experiences with. (在这方面不要只依赖你的朋友,相反,你应该向那些有很多文学课程的院系的大三和大四学生求助,问问他们哪些教授的课程反响不错)”可知,该处提到多向大三和高年级学生咨询关于教授的相关信息。因此空格处应选择G选项“Ask people who are majors in humanities departments to recommend professors to you.(请人文学科院系专业的同学向你推荐教授)”符合语境,故选G项。
59.根据空前句“This is your opportunity to re-discover the books and authors that you’ve completely written off. (这是一个机会,让你重新发现那些被你完全遗忘的书籍和作者)”可知,重读之前的一些作品,会让你重新认识那些曾不屑一顾的书籍和作者的价值,空处应是提及你的新发现。因此应选择C选项“You might find something in them that you love after all.(你可能会在书籍和作者身上找到你的确喜欢的东西)”符合语境,故选C项。

61.第一段首句“Learning in a classroom with teachers, friends and textbooks is of course one way to learn, but it is not the only way.”(在教室里与老师、朋友和课本一起学习当然是一种学习方式,但不是唯一的方式)是为了引出本文主题句:“In fact, travelling is one of the best ways to learn things.”(事实上,旅行是学习东西最好的方法之一)所以C项符合题意。故选C项。
根据下文“Travelling will change that as things like talking to complete strangers or asking them a favor are not an option but a necessity during your travels.”(旅行将改变这种情况,因为在旅行中,与完全陌生的人交谈或请求他们帮忙不是一种选择,而是一种需求)可知,该句中的that指代的是F项“You may be a little shy and find it difficult to take part in social activities.”(你可能有点害羞,很难参与社交活动),本段主要是阐述旅行可以增强你的社交能力。
63.根据第三段第一句“Travelling will teach you how to control your fate.”(旅行会教会你如何掌控你的命运)可知,旅行可以提高自己的独立做决定的能力,对应A项“Travelling forces one to be independent.”(旅行会促使一个人变得独立),而下文“This is even more the case when you travel on your own. There’s no choice but to make decisions and take initiatives completely by yourself as you don’t have anyone to tell you what to do.”(当你独自旅行的时候尤为如此,因为你身边没有人告诉你该怎么做,你没有别的选择,只能完全由自己做决定,自己去采取行动)是对设空处的进一步说明。 故选A项。
64.第四段首句“As you travel, you can better understand how the cultures around the world vary and where the common ground lies.”(旅行的时候你能够更好地了解世界各地的文化异同)主要说明了旅行可以帮助你了解世界各地的文化。设空处在本段的段尾,是对本段内容的总结,则E项“The understanding of diverse cultures plays a vital role in your education.”(了解多元文化对自身教育起到重要作用)能够总结该段,符合题意。故选E项。
65.第五段首句“Perhaps the most important aspect of the education that comes with traveling is what you know about yourself.”(旅行所带来的教育中最重要的方面是加深你对自己的了解),D项“You may realize what you really enjoy and who you really are.”(你会了解到你真正喜欢的是什么,了解到一个真正的自己)从正面阐述旅行对于了解自己的作用,下文“Without travelling, you may even be completely unaware of your real character.”(不去旅行,你甚至可能完全不知道自己的真实性格)是从反面阐述旅行对于了解自己的作用,所以D项符合题意。

66.上文“The duration, body placement, and pressure during a hug can actually tell you if someone is feeling romantic or if they only view you as a friend. (拥抱的持续时间、身体位置和压力实际上可以告诉你,对方是对你很浪漫,还是只把你当作朋友)”提出通过拥抱可以知晓别人的态度,并结合下文“In this article, we’ll decode what the most common hugs mean and tell you how to copy them so that you can hug like you mean it.(在这篇文章中,我们将解读最常见的拥抱的含义,并告诉你如何模仿它们,这样你就可以真诚地拥抱了)”引出文章的主题:解读最常见的拥抱的含义。D项“So knowing the meaning of hugs and how to respond is very important.(所以了解拥抱的含义以及如何回应是非常重要的)”承上启下,通过拥抱可以知晓别人的态度,所以了解拥抱的含义就非常重要,从而引入文章主题,同时句中“knowing the meaning of hugs ”与下文中“decode what the most common hugs mean”相照应。
67.根据下文“You typically give and receive this hug when you say goodbye to someone, or are greeting them after a long time. The classic hug is one of the most common hugs, where you and the hugger wrap your arms around each other with your chests touching and heads side by side. Make it a great hug by embracing them tightly and holding the hug for several seconds.(这种拥抱通常是在你和某人说再见时,或者在很长一段时间后问候他们时给予和接受的。经典的拥抱是最常见的拥抱之一,你和拥抱者互相搂住对方的手臂,胸部接触,头并排。紧紧地拥抱他们,并保持几秒钟,让这个拥抱成为一个很棒的拥抱)”中“say goodbye to someone, or are greeting them after a long time”和“one of the most common hugs”可推知,Classic Hug是朋友或家人之间的亲密拥抱,所以C项“This is a warm, intimate hug between friends and family.(这是朋友和家人之间温暖、亲密的拥抱)”符合题意。故选C项。
68.根据下文“This hug is usually platonic, but means that you are close with the hugger and are sharing a happy moment together. Be careful not to squeeze too tightly during this hug.(这种拥抱通常是柏拉图式的,但意味着你和拥抱者很亲密,一起分享快乐的时刻。在拥抱的过程中要注意不要挤得太紧)”可知,Bear Hug表明两人之间的关系非常亲密,F项“In this hug, someone wraps their arms all the way around you and squeezes tightly.(在这种拥抱中,有人会把胳膊一直搂着你,紧紧地挤在一起)”中“wraps their arms all the way around you and squeezes tightly”表达这种亲密的关系,句中“squeezes tightly”与下文中“squeeze too tightly”相照应。
69.设空句是小标题,根据下文“A hug with multiple people signifies warmth and togetherness. You might initiate a group hug with close friends or family to show your happiness during a celebration, or strengthen your bonds during a farewell. Simply gather up your friends and form a tight ball, with your arms around everyone.(与多人拥抱意味着温暖和团聚。在庆祝活动中,你可能会主动与亲密的朋友或家人拥抱,以表达你的快乐,或者在告别时加强你们的联系。只要把你的朋友们聚集起来,搂着每个人,组成一个紧密的球)”可知本段介绍的是很多人一起的拥抱方式,故选A项“The Group Hug”。故选A项。
70.上文“A short hug is a friendly, social greeting. This is a common hug that doesn’t mean much beyond a polite acknowledgement. Your upper bodies may touch, but your lower does not. You might receive this hug from an old friend, a colleague, or family member. If you receive this hug from someone you’re interested in, they might just be in a hurry to get somewhere.(一个简短的拥抱是一种友好的社交问候。

It also means being sharp and smart enough to be open to positive learning.(自我激励意味着准备好进行有动力的、集中的讨论和行动。这也意味着要足够敏锐和聪明,能够积极地学习)”以及后文“Luckily, you have every tool at your disposal to get started right now.
72.根据后文“It’s simple to know what we don’t want. And less scary!(知道我们不想要什么很简单。通常很难确定到底什么会让我们快乐,我们到底在为什么而奋斗。然而,为了完成任何事情,我们必须开始以积极的目标来思考,而不是消极的恐惧。而不是“我不想变穷”,一个更好的目标是“我想每个月存X笔钱”。看到后一种方法更可行了吗?而且不那么可怕!)”可知,本段的主旨是说明专注于积极的目标。故B选项“专注于积极的目标”符合语境,故选B。
73.根据上文“Track your progress. Whether you’re losing weight, working overtime, or studying for college, track what you’re doing! This will give you drive and show you the positive outcomes of your behavior.(记录你的进步。不管你是在减肥,加班,还是在上大学,记录下你在做什么!这会给你动力,让你看到你行为的积极结果)”以及后文“Make sure to track your behaviors and their results. Not only do you need the results to look at and go, “Gee! I am awesome! Look at what I did!” you’ll need the results to see what does and does not work for you.(一定要跟踪你的行为和结果。你不仅需要看到结果,然后说:“哇!我很棒!看看我做了什么!”你需要结果来看看什么对你有用,什么对你没用)”可知,本段的主旨是记录进步,看到你行为的积极结果,故F选项“如果你取得了进步,你就没有什么好羞愧的”符合语境,故选F。
74.根据上文“Keep good company.(交个好朋友)”以及后文“We have that friend that desperately wants us to eat another piece of cheesecake. That person is not good company. To get going on our path to success, everyone needs cheerleaders along the way! Tell your friends and family what you’re trying to stay motivated with.(我们有一个朋友拼命地想让我们再吃一块芝士蛋糕。那个人不是好伙伴。在通往成功的道路上,每个人都需要一路的拉拉队!告诉你的朋友和家人你在努力保持动力)”可知,后文提到了朋友拖后腿,阻止完成目标的情况。故E选项“不幸的是,人们也会让人失去动力”符合语境,故选E。
75.根据上文“Use rewards. This is a point to be considered carefully. The last thing you want to do is to associate everything with a Snickers bar. However, rewards can be powerful when used sparingly and efficiently.(使用奖励。这一点需要仔细考虑。你最不想做的就是把所有东西都和士力架联系起来。然而,如果适当而有效地使用奖励,它将具有强大的威力)”可知,上文提到了奖励具有强大的威力,本句为本段最后一句,应说明其威力是什么:它会给你目标。故C选项“它会给你目标”符合语境,故选C。

    76.根据上文“They can’t talk. They can’t walk.”(它们不能说话。 故选A项。
77.根据空前“The forest floor is described as a “battlefield” in the series as only two percent of the sunlight filters (透过) through it.”(森林地面被描述为一个“战场”,因为只有百分之二的阳光通过它)及空后“But they are caught up in a vine (藤蔓) that tries to take a ride.”(但它们被一条试图搭车的藤蔓缠住了)可知,空处要描写一些植物是如何努力获取阳光的。
In deserts, the roots of Euphrates poplar are connected. If a tree finds water, it will share it with others through the roots.
