My name is Destiny, working at a Psychological Counselling Center. In my teens, there was nothing special about me. My older sister, Antia, is beautiful. My younger brother, Tye, is a talent at the age 13. He completely skipped the sixth grade. How do I compete with that?
My mom and I were home alone one day. I went into the room where she was watching television and I blurted out (脱口而出), “Mom, is there anything special about me?”
She thought about it for a moment and then turned down TV. She took a deep breath, took my hand and exhaled (呼气).
“You have the ability to say just the right thing at just the right time.”
“Really? Is that it, words?” I tried to keep my voice steady (稳定的) but I could hear the anger even as I fought to control it.
“It’s more than words, Destiny,” my mom said. I know my mother meant well but I felt worse than ever. I burst into tears.
The next day is when my whole life changed. I went to school earlier than before and noticed Darwin sitting across the room which was strange because no one ever noticed Darwin. Suddenly, Darwin stood up and threw away all his books, shouting loudly. I could hear screaming and crying but the sounds seemed distant as I focused my full attention on Darwin six feet in front of me. I felt the words swell up in me. “Darwin,” I heard myself say with a calm, steady voice. “I have family and friends with so much talent and potential and I have none. There is nothing special about me.” From the corner of my eye, I could see others staring at me in silence. I continued talking. “You are so smart. You can answer questions that the teacher hasn’t even asked yet. Do you know that everyone in this class is envious (嫉妒的) of you?” Hearing my words, he calmed down and gave me a big hug.
Then the teacher came. Learning about what happened, the teacher smiled, “That was a great job you did, young lady. Superman could not have done a better job than you did here today.” I couldn’t believe that she compared me to Super man. I work at Psychological Counselling Center now. There is a cork board over my desk filed with thank-you cards and letters from people who say they owe their lives, careers, or their families to my words. But tome, they are more than words. They are my super power!

Dear Ms. Smith,
I am writing to apply for the Sales Manager position on the careers page of the King Computers website. Last year King Computers added five new offices, making it the largest computer sales and services company in the state. I understand that one of the company’s aims is to expand outside of the Washington area. I am seeking the opportunity to play an important role in your growing business. As a sales manager with Diamond Computers, I expanded our sales area by 150% in two years. I am confident that my leadership and experience will help King Computers achieve its goals, too.
I have worked in the field of computer sales for over fifteen years. Currently I am a sales manager for Diamond Computers based in Seattle. I am skilled at managing accounts and increasing sales revenue (收益). Last year, my team produced $960,000 in revenue—the highest in the company. Also, I received the Diamond Sales Award for the best sales manager. In addition, I am experienced at planning sales strategies, developing advertising campaigns, and creating sales budgets.
King Computers is well-known for its customer-first philosophy. In my fifteen years in sales, this way of thinking is the most important thing I have learned. A sales strategy should never be just about getting money from customers. I believe it’s important to take the time to listen to each customer—to understand what he or she really needs. Then, we must find the product that best matches those needs. As a sales manager for King Computers, I will be in a great position to do just that.
If you are looking for a skilled sales manager with a history of success, I would be delighted to speak with you.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
Paul Reubens

I have been good at art since I was a kid. When I created my social media account, I got a nice platform to express and showcase my art. Then an idea came to my mind—why not earn money through something I really enjoy doing? So I set up an online art shop and displayed my paintings. In the beginning, I really wanted it to work, but I didn’t really have a belief that people would buy my art. I wanted it to happen but it just seemed impossible. I was just posting my art in my shop. Soon I thought it was not happening and that it wouldn’t happen. I just dropped my idea.
One night before sleeping, I was just wondering how it would actually feel to be receiving mail on my shop e-mail address with someone telling me that he wanted to buy a painting. It would just feel so good because it really meant something to me. It was not just about making money, but it was about me and my art receiving love from people across the world.
Two days later, I happened to check the messages from my online shop. And trust me; I had never, ever checked it before. OMG! There was a message from a fellow asking me about one of my paintings. He was asking whether it was still available. I just got so many butterflies in my stomach! Because that message was sent the day before, I didn’t know whether he’d be still interested. I messaged him and he immediately responded and sent me the money! But the story didn’t end there!
It was my first time that I had shipped my product and it turned out that this guy was from a different state so the courier people (快递员)told me that it would go by air. The charge for the courier was twice more than the cost of my painting. So at the courier’s office, my heart sank. I doubted whether there would be anyone who paid a courier charge that was higher than the price of the product. I believed I had already known his answer, but I still decided to ask him if it was okay with him.
After a moment I received his reply.

A. mixed up混淆;B. fed up厌烦;C. knocked down击倒;D. settled down定居。根据前文“I was running so fast that I bounced off the trunk and 5 on my backside.”以及后文“When that happens, don’t sit in the grass and cry. Just get up and keep on going.”
A. all at once同时,突然;B. in the end最后;C. in either case不论哪种情况;D. as a result因此。根据前文“When that happens, don’t sit in the grass and cry. Just get up and keep on going.”

Several days later, I got a message from him with a picture of my painting hanging in his living room, saying that his family and friends all love it. It made me so happy! It meant so much to me, and I knew my paintings were appreciated by others.
Later, I continued my business. I started to receive more and more orders. Now every art piece I have created gets sold straight away and it gives me the power to create more and more excellent paintings. I just want to tell you to believe in yourself. Your ability is the key to success. Recognize what you are good at and keep going. Then you will definitely get what you truly desire!
