    1.(2022年湖北省部分学校高三联考)
    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Lungs nearly bursting, I struggled to lift my head out of the water. Inch by inch, my tired body reached for the end of the pool.
Earlier that week, I had turned in my first job application at a local pool. Overqualified, I was hired on the spot. However, the tasks were boring: helping confused visitors and measuring the height of children before they went down the slide, those sorts of things. I was competent for more.
So a swim test was required, establishing the mere fact that I was not completely helpless in a pool. Midway through, the manager administering the test remarked. “This looks really easy for you. Why aren’t you applying to become a guard? ”
“The thought hadn’t crossed my mind.”
“Well, lifeguarding demands more responsibility, strength and respect. Thus the position pays $2 more per hour. Your swimming skills are strong enough. All you need to do is complete a certification class. ”Inside I was unsure of myself, but his words inspired me — You never know what you are competent to do until you force yourself to do it. Soon I passed the swim test. All left was to practice and learn first aid, CPR (心肺复苏), and procedures for different land and water-based emergencies.
Work started soon. Days, weeks, and months went by without incident; emergencies were rare. The skills and training I had so carefully studied and attained seemed unnecessary.
Today appeared to be another uneventful (平静无事) day. However, shortly after the other guards signaled to the children to exit the pool, I noticed one boy was still in the middle while the others had climbed up.

    【答案】
“Something must have gone wrong with him,” I thought to myself. As it turned out, with a closer look, I found the boy waving his hands and struggling in the water desperately. Without a second thought, I dived into the water, swimming towards the boy at full speed. By the time I reached him, he had nearly sunk to the bottom of the pool, his face pale and his head hanging down, which threw me into great concern and huge panic. I picked the boy up and headed to the poolside with all my strength, keeping his head above the water.
Having the boy on the floor, I put my ear to his mouth and my fingers at his neck. It came as a shock to me that he wasn’t breathing. To make matters worse, I could hardly feel his heartbeat. Every second counted! Without the slightest hesitation I did first aid to him, giving him mouth-to-mouth breathing and doing CPR as I had been trained before. After what seemed a century, I suddenly felt his body moved, a stream of water bursting out of his mouth, and then came the sound of the boy coughing intensely. Seeing the boy come back to life, those surrounding us burst into cheers. Realizing that all my efforts eventually paid off, I breathed a sigh of relief, a smile lighting up my face.

    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
I should have been born with my fingers permanently glued to a keyboard. Since I was five, I’ve known that I want to be a professional writer: a journalist, a novelist, a modernday Shakespeare, maybe. In my freshman year I tried to figure out what A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Tragedy of Julius Caesar were about. Macbeth was much easier to understand in my sophomore year (大二年级).
However, I’m practically addicted to books, whether I’m reading or writing them. I can’t go a single day without writing something. I have made it a rule to pick up a pen and just let my thoughts out every day.
I can be inspired by anything: an expression, a song and a movie. Once I get inspired, it’s like the wheels turning faster and faster as I think out one possible story after another.
My family is so widespread that whenever I meet with a cousin or an aunt I only vaguely (模糊地) remember; I tell him or her I’m a writer because I know it will distinguish me from all the other kids in the family and make me memorable. I told my relatives about the stories I used to write as a child, the projects I’m working on now, and why I’m working so hard to make a breakthrough in the competitive world of publishing. One aunt hugged me and told me, “Just don’t forget about the rest of us when you become the next J. K. Rowling.”
Smiling, I replied, “Don’t worry, I won’t.” I am confident that I will become the next J. K. Rowling. I have the ambition, the means, and the talent. My English and history teachers don’t praise my writing and tell me I have an innate (与生俱来的) writing talent even though they know how passionate I am about writing, and how that passion slips through my fingertips to the paper.
    Paragraph 1:
I don’t really know why I love writing so much.
    ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    Paragraph 2:
Maybe I just want to leave my mark on the world since I can’t sing to create a great work of art.
    ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    【答案】
    Paragraph 1:
I don’t really know why I love writing so much. I just do. I always feel that there is something in my mind about putting a story down on paper for friends across the globe to read and understand, and about finding just the right words to describe what I can see so clearly in my head, which attracts me like a beautiful song. Writing makes me who I am. Through writing I have found true happiness. Through writing I have found the value and meaning of life.
    Paragraph 2:
Maybe I just want to leave my mark on the world since I can’t sing to create a great work of art. Although I am a pretty good actor, acting doesn’t seem like the right path for me. So I’ve chosen writing to make a breakthrough in this world. I am a novelist, journalist and graduate of Columbia University. How nice it sounds! As a professional writer, I have more time and opportunities to create more characters, through which I can express what is going on in my mind. That’s just what I want to leave behind.

    阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Getting to watch surgery should be exciting for any medical student. But in my case, while two doctors were doing the operation, I was checking my phone every 20 seconds to see how much longer it would be until I could leave. I didn’t belong there; I was only pretending to be there. The truth was that, halfway through university, I knew I didn’t want to be a doctor. And I had to decide whether to keep lying to myself, or change my major.
Before university, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. Pd always wanted to study English but my parents didn’t approve, saying there was no money in it. So I figured I’d just pick a career that looked well-paid, satisfying, and would make my parents proud. “Doctor” is the first choice, so I decided to study medicine. I knew all the coursework wouldn’t be easy, but I didn’t expect to find it as hard as I did. I spent many late nights and weekends studying, but still didn’t get good grades. I just couldn’t keep the material in mind. By exam time, my grades were terrible and I felt like a fool. I thought maybe a medical internship (实习医生的工作) would help raise my spirits. Absurdly, my internship was where I realized how little I wanted to be a doctor.
Every day I’d just go into work and do exactly what I was told, go where I was told to go, and watch what I was told to watch. And then I’d go home. It was fun whenever I got to play with expensive microscopes or watch crazy surgery, but the rest of the time I struggled to get through the day. The other interns, however, practically worked so hard. They were so driven. I thought, “Wow, these interns really want to be doctors. I obviously don’t. “It was a sad realization that sadder, scarier question: If I didn’t want to be a doctor, what did I want to do?

    It wasn’t an easy decision.

Eventually, I changed my major to English writing and suddenly I found university enjoyable.
    _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    【答案】
It wasn’t an easy decision. I had two choices—either keep lying to myself or do a different degree. Changing my major would make the past two years of university a waste of time and money. But I realized that though I’d hate myself for quitting, I’d hate myself more if I ended up being a terrible doctor. I was glad to move onto something new, but I had to deal with my parents’ constant disappointment and complaining about my future.
Eventually, I changed my major to English writing and suddenly I found university enjoyable. I was still studying late and through the weekend, but, this time, enjoying the pain. I’d spend hours perfecting a single paragraph until I was satisfied with it. Five hours felt like 20 seconds because I was having so much fun burying myself in writing until good words came out. I started looking for internships that would give me experience in professional writing. Fortunately, I made it as an editorial assistant at a newspaper.

    阅读下面短文, 根据所给情节进行续写, 使之构成一个完整的故事。
Three months later was the Middle School Championship Baseball Game of the spring season! The winners would all get trophies (奖杯), Jonas was determined to bring home a trophy to put on his shelf for he had never won one before.
He insisted on practicing in the stadium with friends every day. Day in and day out, the gloves became worn-out. Jonas thought, “I want a pair of new baseball gloves for better practice!“
Jonas passed by a store and saw a pair of delicate gloves, which cost thirty-five dollars. But when Jonas asked for the new baseball gloves, his mother only sighed. “Your birthday isn’tuntil July, ” she said. “If you want the gloves sooner than that, you will have to buy it yourself. If you want something, earn it by yourself. ”
Jonas thought hard. He was too young to drive to work like Dad, and he couldn’t turn his bedroom into an office to work at home like Mom. He went to his favorite thinking spot to look at the bird feeder in his back yard.
As Jonas was thinking about getting a job, it began to snow. At first there were only a few flakes (雪花), but soon the ground turned white.
“I know!” cried Jonas. “I’ll shovel (铲) the sidewalks on snow days. If I’m fast, I can do a lot of houses and make a lot of money. ”
So Jonas put on his warmest sweater and fastened the button of his winter coat. He also added scarf, gloves and a hat. Then he went into the garage to grab a shovel.
Jonas started next door. He rang the bell and asked Mr. Travers if he would like his sidewalks shoveled. “Yes,” said Mr. Travers. “But you should wait until it stops snowing before you start or you will have to do it twice.”
“I’ll be back!” said Jonas. He went around the block to see who would like their walks shoveled after the storm. He had eight customers by the time he got back to his own house.

Tired but happy, Jonas looked at the forty dollars earned from his work.
    ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    【答案】
When it stopped snowing, Jonas grabbed his shovel and got to work. Standing on Mr Traver’s sidewalks, initially, Jonas was sort of clumsy, but soon he became so expert that it took only 20 minutes to shovel the snow to the sides of the road. When Mr Travers handed Jonas a 5-dollar bill with satisfaction, his face cracked into a smile. Soaked with sweat, he even took off his winter clothes. Waving goodbye, Jonas headed for the second client’s, doing the work in the same order he talked to his neighbors. 3 hours flashed by before he knew it. With all the work finished, each neighbour gave him a thumb-up, as well as the reward, which added up to 40 dollars.
Tired but happy, Jonas looked at the forty dollars earned from his work. It was enough for the gloves. Hardly had Jonas taken the new baseball gloves in the store when he began to practice. His perfect performance won the opportunity to take part in the championship Baseball Game. Hard practice paid off, he and his friends won the first prize. When he took his trophy home and put it on his shelf, his mother spotted he had become a maturer teenager, who could cope with problems life held in store for him.

Having struggled with financial difficulties for six months and failing to find a way out, I had to close my technology writing business. Fortunately, I found a new job as a salesperson and soon got a client. At the time, I wondered if it was too good to be true.
By the second month, something didn’t seem right, and I developed a bad feeling about the client and the work. When the third month’s check didn’t arrive on time, I sent the client an e-mail to find out what was going on. But there was no reply. Then I sent another e-mail, and another. The check never arrived, and I never heard from the client again. With no hope in sight, I hit rock bottom. Panic replaced cautious optimism along with my last self-confidence.
I hid myself from friends and locked myself in my room. One night, the phone rang. The call was from Eric, a friend of mine from high school. When he was in high school, he told me many times about his parents’ divorce and his loss of confidence in the college entrance examination. During the difficult time, I gave him much comfort and encouragement. Later, he went to college and was always grateful for what I had done.
After the greetings, I told my problems and challenges, hoping my friend would say something comforting. What I didn’t expect was a string of sharp words. “What is wrong with you? You can do anything you want to do,” he said. “You are a writer, so start writing. Write for magazine.” “Write for magazine? Are you out of your mind? I don’t know the first thing about writing for magazine, let alone write things that anyone would want to read. And I have to know where I can send an application form-to what magazine and to what editor,” I shouted at him.

Surprisingly, I felt a little better after the shouting.

On finishing the application form I sent it to the editor.
    _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    【答案】
Surprisingly, I felt a little better after the shouting. After a short silence, Eric replied in a firm voice. “I always remember what you said when I was in trouble. You said ‘No one can get you out of trouble but yourself. ’ ” Hearing that, I was speechless and struck by the fact that it was easier to convince others than to convince myself. Inspired by Eric’s words, I started searching for magazines the next day and finally found one that accepted online contributions with various topics. Then I began to prepare my application form.
On finishing the application form I sent it to the editor. Luckily, two days later I received a positive response and an invitation to write. At first, I only wrote articles I was expert in. Gradually, I began trying new types. One day, much to my amazement, one of my articles appeared on the first page of the magazine! Since then, I have been on my way to becoming an excellent writer. That definitely should be credited to Eric. It was he who enlightened me and helped me regain confidence to face challenges in my life.

Amy is good at making pies, which got her hired at the Good Times restaurant months ago. And she was often regarded as the best worker there. Recently, she became the supervisor at the restaurant. She was kind and friendly to all the other workers and the customers.
One morning, Amy was taking orders when she overheard a conversation. “What you did there was great, Mason! It was hard to carry the old lady safely out of the fire. For a moment, I thought you were gone, my friend,” one man said. To this, the other man replied, “Yeah, it was difficult, but that’s our job. And you were the hero today, Gordon. You carried that girl on your shoulder and her dog in your hand. It’s going to be on the front page tomorrow, I’m telling you.”
From their clothing and conversation, Amy knew they were firefighters. And she quickly realized that they had been talking about the previous night’s fire at the old motel on the other end of the road. Then the man named Gordon continued, “I don’t care about being in the papers. The little girl and her dog reminded me of my own daughter. She’s constantly asking for a dog, too.” Amy was moved by the courage and sincerity of the two men. She wanted to show her appreciation for their selfless service.

“How about helping pay for their meal?” she wondered.

    【答案】
“How about helping pay for their meal?” she wondered. After taking the order, Amy sat down at a table, got out of a pen and a piece of paper and wrote on the paper, “You are my hero; you are the hero of the city. You are always thinking of others, often risking your life to help others. What I can do for you today is nothing compared to what you did last night. I want to express my appreciation to all of you for your heroic conduct.” Having finished writing the note, Amy got up from the table, glancing at the two firefighters with admiration.
Then she went to the cashier and secretly paid for their meal. She asked the cashier not to tell them who had paid for their meal but just give them the note. About half an hour later, the two firefighters finished their meal and went to the cashier to pay for their meal. But they were told that someone had already paid for them. The firefighters looked at the cashier in surprise. The cashier handed them the note. Looking at the note, the firefighters knew what had happened. “Please convey our thanks to this kind person,” said the firefighters. After saying this, they left the restaurant.

    阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
In 1989,fresh out of high school, I had the difficult task of choosing a career path before college started in three months. In those days in Pakistan, there were limited options: becoming a doctor or an engineer or entering the financial world after getting a business degree. I wasn’t interested in engineering, so I was left with medicine or business. I couldn’t decide.
My uncle, an influential person in the family, suggested that I do a placement (实习工作) to experience it for a month in an international company followed by a month in a hospital. After that,I could make a decision. It seemed like a brilliant idea.
I was accepted for a month’s placement at a foreign bank in Karachi. I understood a little about how the world of finance functioned, made new friends, and generally enjoyed the mostly easygoing work surroundings.
The month passed rapidly, and soon I began working at a leading hospital in Karachi. The experience couldn’t have been more different. The hospital had an intense environment. The days started early (at 7:00 am compared to 9:00 am at the bank) and were filled with endless duties, and the night calls! This was crazy, working all day, through the night, and again the next day.
I began thinking about my two experiences. The bank had offered a more relaxing atmosphere, better working hours and less stress. The hospital was full of excitement and unpredictability, but the studying and training was difficult. It seemed that the business option was going to win.
Near the end of my month at the hospital, I was driving home after an especially busy night call.In front of me was a public bus, with college students sitting on the top. As the driver weaved through (traffic, I could see the boys shaking from side to side.

    【答案】
Suddenly,a boy fell off the back of the bus. He hit the road face down and rolled over. He then lay motionless in the middle of the road as the bus sped away. None of the cars behind the bus stopped. In fact,I felt the same urge to keep going, but the urge to stop and help was stronger. Knowing that he could die in a matter of minutes, I stopped my car and carefully examined his body. With the help of some passers-by, I lifted his unconscious body into the car and raced back to the hospital. After his family was contacted, and he was wheeled into emergency surgery, I drove home, exhausted.
The next day, when I went to hospital to see the boy,all his family members got up, with grateful smiles on their faces. The mother held my hands to her face and started weeping. “Son,you are an angel!”she repeated. What a feeling this was, to help save the life of another person! I spent the rest of the day in a state of excitement, the most thrilling mood I had ever experienced. Driving home that evening, I knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Two months of placements could not match what 30 minutes’ helping an accident victim had done for me. We spend a lot of time wondering what path to take in our lives. This experience taught me that at times, these decisions are made for you and that whatever happens is always for the best.

It was spring, and Steve wanted to get a new set (套装) of football, sports shoes, and a really cool backpack. There was only one problem. That great set was too expensive. Steve only saved $10, and that was not even close to what he would need to buy the set.“I could ask mom and dad to give my pocket money in advance,” he thought to himself, “but that would be a big advance!”
That night, Steve told his parents the problem. “Have you ever thought about doing something for the neighborhood to earn some extra money?” asked his dad. “No, it would take me too long to earn the money,” answered Steve, “I need the new set for the school football match in two weeks.”
“Well, if you earn part of the money, I’ll advance you the rest. Is that OK?” suggested his dad. Steve agreed with the offer, went back to his bedroom and thought about what he could do to earn some money.“Billy from next door takes care of Mrs. Smith’s garden, Kelly walks Mr. Frank’s dog, and Tony washes Mr. Lipton’s car. There is nothing that I can do to ear some money,” thought Steve.
The next day after school, Steve went past the store, Sports Time. He loved to lok in the window at all the football equipment and other goods on the shelves. Steve went in and looked at the new football set he wanted.
“Hi, Steve,” said Mrs. Thomas,“what can I do for you today?”
“I want to see if there is a sale on that football set.”
“I am afraid not,” said Mrs. Thomas, “it is sill S60.”
“I only have $10 saved, and my dad said if I could do something for the neighborhood, he would advance me the rest,” said Steve, and he told her about the school football match.

    【答案】
Seeing that Steve was eager for the set, Mrs. Thomas came up with an idea. She bent over and winked at the boy, saying that he could help her out at the shop after school for the next two weeks and in exchange he could have the set for $10. At the thought that his dream would come true soon, he was overwhelmed with excitement. In the following two weeks, Steve rushed to the store after school, helping sort out the goods and offer valuable advice to customers, which satisfied Mrs. Thomas a lot. Finally the last day came! Mrs. Thomas announced as she had promised, “Boy, you have done an excellent job. Now go to get your payment.”
With her permission, Steve rushed to the new football set excitedly. Holding the set carefully with both hands, he couldn’t help dreaming about the coming football match. A broad smile spread across his face. To show his gratitude, Steve bowed to Mrs. Thomas, without whose help he couldn’t have afforded the precious set. Then he went back home happily and shared this amazing experience with his parents, who felt so proud and gave him a thumb-up. What Mrs. Thomas and his parents gave him was not only support and sports equipment, but a valuable lesson about independence.

    Appreciation of Hard Work
A young man applied for a managerial position in a big company. In the last interview, the director of the company found that the young man was excellent all the way, from the secondary school until the postgraduate research.
The director asked, “Did you obtain any scholarships in school?”
    The youth answered, “None.”
The director asked, “Was it your father who paid for your school fees?”
The youth answered, “My father passed away when I was one year old. It was my mother who paid for my school fees.”
The director asked, “Where did your mother work?”
The youth answered, “My mother worked as a clothes cleaner.”
The director asked the youth to show his hands. The youth showed his smooth hands.
The director asked, “Have you ever helped your mother wash the clothes before?”
The youth answered, “Never, my mother always asked me to study and read more books. Besides, my mother can wash clothes faster than me.”
The director said, “I have a request. When you go back today, clean your mother’s hands and then see me tomorrow morning.”
When he went back, he happily asked his mother to let him clean her hands. His mother felt strange but happy. The youth cleaned his mother’s hands slowly. His tears fell as he did that. It was the first time he noticed that his mother’s hands were so wrinkled, and there were so many bruises in her hands. Some bruises were so painful that his mother shivered when they were cleaned with water. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
It was my first job, working as a temporary sales girl during the Christmas rush at Richardson’s, the finest jewelry store in our city.
The job was very important to me. Dad had passed away and Mother and I did not have enough to live on in those hard Depression years. I worked in the diamond department. My duties were to arrange the goods, keep them clean, and run errands (跑腿). It was interesting work that I enjoyed thoroughly.
As Christmas drew near, the days became more rushed, but also more exciting. One afternoon, Miss Allan, the head of the department, asked me to get her the diamond ring from the end showcase. I hurried back, with the ring in my hand when I noticed a man on the other side of the row of showcases. He was tall and in his early thirties. But it was the expression on his face that stopped me. He looked bitter, angry and confused. From his well-cut but worn-out suit, I could tell he was one of thousands trained for jobs they could no longer find. He gazed at the beautiful stones with the despair of a man whose right to earn them had been taken away. I had a sudden feeling of sympathy. But I had other things on my mind and soon forgot about him.
A few minutes later Miss Allan called for me again. This time for the clip (夹子) that went with the ring. The clip was at the very front of the window. I got it. But just as I was backing out, my sleeve caught on the corner of a tray (盘子) of diamonds. The tray started to fall, and six magnificent diamond rings rolled across the floor.
Down on my knees, I collected five rings with the greatest speed and put them in the tray. But I couldn’t find the sixth! I thought it must have slipped through the tiny opening between the showcase and the window. I ran around the counter and looked down. It wasn’t there. Just then, out of the corner of my eyes I saw the tall man moving quietly toward the door of the shop, a few yards away. At that moment I knew that he had the ring. He had been standing at the only spot to which it could have rolled. I reached him just as he got to the door.

    Paragraph 1:

    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    Paragraph 2:
“What do you want?” he repeated.
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    【答案】
“Excuse me, please,” I said. He turned, and for a minute neither of us spoke. To drop a tray of rings was bad, but that would be forgiven. To lose a ring was unthinkable. “What do you want?” he asked. He seemed a bit nervous. What should I say? Disaster could come to me from what I was sure he’d done. Yet I felt he hadn’t come into the store planning to steal. Perhaps he had just wanted to get warm.
“What do you want?” he repeated. Suddenly I had the answer. Mother always told me people are generally kind. I didn’t think this man would want to hurt me. “This is my first job,” I said softly. “Jobs are hard to get now.” He searched my face and then smiled gently. “But I’m sure you’ll do very well in yours. May I wish you luck?” He put his hand out and clasped mine. “Good luck to you,” I whispered. He opened the door and disappeared into the crowd. Then I turned and put the sixth diamond in the tray.
