On Tuesday, scientists announced that they have discovered the bones of four settlers in Jamestown, Virginia. Jamestown was the first permanent English settlement in what become the United States. The bones were unearthed under the floor of a Jamestown church which was discovered in 2010 and is considered as America’s first Protestant church.
The Jamestown Rediscovery Foundation at Historic Jamestowne and the Smithsonian’s Museum of Natural History announced that the settlers held high leadership positions. The men, Rev.Robert Hunt,Capt. Gabriel Archer,Sir Ferdinando Wainman, and Capt. William West, all played a role in the Jamestown settlement. After being lost to history for more than 400 years, the discovery of their remains provides new clues about their life and the importance of religion in the 1600s.
“This is a very important discovery,” Jamestown Rediscovery Foundation President James Horn said in a statement. “These men were among the first founders of English America."
About 100 people settled along the James River in what would become the first English settlement m 1607. During that time, settlers in Jamestown were faced with famine and disease. The colony was nearly wiped out due to conflict with Native Americans in the area and with other English settlers.
“They lived and died at a hard time in the history of the settlement , when Jamestown almost ended in failure,” Horn said. “The bones of these men help fill in the stories of their lives ”
The Smithsonian and the Rediscovery Foundation found the remains in November of 2013. Scientists used 3-D technology to locate the exact gravesites of the men. The team wanted to identify its findings before announcing the discovery. They identified the men using historical records and studied the chemicals of the bones to learn what the men ate and where they came from.
Findings from the burials will go on display within weeks at Historic Jamestowne. The site also plans to honor
the men and will keep their bones in a safe place for future study.

Dear Customers,
I love slipping into a comfortable chair for a long read—as I relax into the chair, I also relax into the author’s words, stories, and ideas. The physical book is so elegant that it disappears into the background, and what remains is the author’s world.
Today, we AMAZON are excited to announce Mindle, a wireless, portable reading device with instant access to more than 90,000 books, magazines, and newspapers.
We’ve been working on Mindle for more than three years. Our top design objective was for Mindle to disappear in your hands — to get out of the way — so you can enjoy your reading. We also wanted to go beyond the physical book. Mindle is wireless, so whether you’re lying in bed or riding a train, you can think of a book, and have it in less than 60 seconds. No computer is needed — you do your reading directly from the device.
We chose the same wireless technology used in advanced mobile phones. But unlike mobile phones, there are no monthly wireless bills, no service or data plans, and no yearly contracts. There is no software to install. We want you to get lost in your reading and not in the technology.
Mindle uses a new kind of display called electronic paper. Sharp and natural with no strong light, reading on Mindle is nothing like reading from a computer screen. Mindle weighs only 10.3 ounces — less than a paperback — but can carry two hundred books.
Enjoy learning about Mindle and many thanks!

Some films to watch in 2022
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse pioneered its own pop-art visual style, and introduced the film world to the concept of different Spider-Men in different universes—a concept that has since been borrowed by Marvel’s live-action Spider-Mon: No Way Home. It is the first one in a two-part story, which makes it rare in the world of cartoon films.
To be released(发行)internationally on 7 October.
Avatar 2
There are two things we know about James Cameron: he can’t be rushed, and he loves the ocean. Those qualities come together in Avatar 2, the first of a four planned sequels(续集)to his 2009 movie Avatar. The new film returns to the planet of Pandora, where Neytiri and her human husband Jake are now parents, and Earthlings still haven’t solved the climate crisis. Most of the action takes place underwater and was shot in a 900000-gallon tank.
To be released internationally on 16 December.
Top Gun: Maverick
This Top Gun sequel was on our list of films to watch in 2022, and before that it was scheduled to come out in 2020, but we’re still optimistic that lovers of supersonic acrobatics(特技飞行)will finally get what they’ve been waiting for this year. It was back in 1986 that Cruise last played Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, a trainee fighter pilot in the US Navy.
To be released internationally on 27 May.
Elvis
It’s been almost a decade since the release of Baz Luthrmann’s The Great Gatsby, but the Australian writer-director is back at last. Never one to shy away from a big, risky project. Luhrmann has made an Elvis Presley biographic film about the life of The King of Rock and Roll.

Birds can serve as indicator species that help us understand how healthy an ecosystem is. Below are some tips especially helpful to reduce bird deaths and support our feathered friends in daily life.
Keep your cat indoors
Aside from habitat loss, the next biggest cause of direct death for birds is outdoor cats. We have seen people create enclosed patios, so their cats can get outside time without posing a risk to birds. If you want to take your cat out, you can also try using cat leads or cat backpacks to keep them close.
Make your windows more visible to birds
Window collisions kill up to a billion birds every year in the U.S.. A lot of people think that those collisions are occurring at the upper levels of high-rise buildings, but actually most of the collisions are occurring at the lower levels of these high-rise buildings. To make your windows more visible to birds, you can try putting up window film with dots (or lines) or adding a window screen or some kind of netting.
Turn off lights you’re not using
Many birds migrate at night. And as they go, they’re attracted by light. Lights will draw birds close to buildings, and sometimes, they collide. Bird collisions also happen during the daytime, because birds can’t see glass. So one of the things that you can help with, especially during migration, is to turn off any lights that are not used.
We’d love to hear from you. If you have a good lifehack, leave us a voicemail at 202-216-9823 or email us at LifeKit@npr.org. Your tip could appear in an upcoming episode. The broadcast portion of this story was produced by Sylvie Douglis. It was hosted and reported by Audrey Nguyen.

While some customs like setting off fireworks and counting down the last few seconds seem universal, many countries have their own unique New Year’s Eve traditions.
Denmark: Break plates
A Danish tradition is to throw plates and dishes against friend’s and neighbor’s front doors. It’s a bit of a popularity contest as the bigger the pile of broken china is the next morning, the more friends and good luck you’ll have in the coming year.
Germany: Pouring lead
In Germany, people melt small pieces of lead in a spoon over a candle, then pour the liquid into cold water. The shapes from the lead pouring are supposed to reveal what the year ahead will bring. If the lead forms a ball, luck will roll one’s way, while the shape of a crown means wealth; a cross means death and a star will bring happiness.
Spain: Twelve grapes of luck
In Spain, one New Year’s tradition is to eat 12 grapes, one for each month of the coming year, to secure prosperity (繁荣). You need to eat one grape with each bell strike at midnight. The tradition dates from 1909 when farmers in Alicante came up with this idea to sell more grapes after an exceptional harvest.
Philippines: Round food, round clothes, round everything
In the Philippines, the start of the new year is all about the money. The locals believe that surrounding themselves with round things (to represent coins) will bring money or fortune. As a result, clothes with dots are worn and round food is eaten.
1.What is believed to bring good luck for the coming new year in Denmark?
A.A red candle. B.Round food. C.Broken china. D.A lead cross.
2.What inspired the New Year’s tradition of eating grapes?
A.A way to make coins. B.An act to keep power.
C.A desire to be popular. D.An idea to gain profit.
3.Which section of a magazine is the text probably taken from?

Many large plant eaters have been wiped out in the past 50,000 years. Now a study has found that the continents that lost the most of these animals had the biggest increases in wildfires in grasslands.
“There’s evidence today that herbivores (食草动物) can limit wildfires by reducing fuel load,” says Allison Karp at Yale University. “In fact, some advocates of rewilding argue that restoring large herbivores can help reduce wildfires.”
A few studies have already found that there have been more fires in specific regions after the loss of large herbivores during the past 50, 000 years. Karp and her colleagues decided to look at the global picture by analyzing two databases from official websites. One, called HerbiTraits, has information on all herbivores larger than 10 kilograms that have lived in the past 130, 000 years. The other, called the Global Paleofire Database, has records of charcoal (木炭) deposited in lakes from 160 sites worldwide, which show changes in fire activity nearby.
The team found that the biggest increases in fire activity were in the continents, such as South America, which lost the most large herbivores, with lower increases where there were fewer extinctions, such as in Africa.
“The relation between herbivore extinctions and changes in fire activity is really strong,” Karp says.
Karp says her study cannot tell us anything about the effects of this increased fire activity. But other studies suggest that they were dramatic. After humans wiped out Australia’s large herbivores, for instance, increased fire activity led to a great loss of the continent s vegetation.
The reasons for the loss of so many large herbivores around the world during this period are still debated. It’s clear that many were hard hit by climate changes related to the last ice age, but human hunting may have been the killer factors in most cases.
8.What does Allison Karp mainly convey in paragraph 2?
A.Herbivores help to reduce wildfires. B.Most large herbivores are in danger.
C.Rewilding has met many challenges. D.Wildfires are very common worldwide.
9.How did Allison Karp and her colleagues draw their conclusion?
A.By doing experiments in labs. B.By comparing previous studies.
C.By analyzing two existing databases. D.By collecting online questionnaires.
10.Which of the following best explains the word “dramatic” underlined in paragraph 6?
A.Beneficial. B.Tiny. C.Confusing. D.Shocking.
11.From which section of a newspaper is the text most probably found?

Kumar is ten years old and works with his father in New Delhi. Every morning, while carrying plastic bags on his shoulders, he runs into children walking to school, ashamed at not being in a school uniform like them. Kumar is one of India’s five million school dropouts. These are the children of villagers who moved to New Delhi but end up living in slums (贫民窟). Many of them, like Kumar’s father, can’t afford to send their children to school. Others are not able to provide birth certificates for their children, which are necessary for school admission.
However, two yellow buses -equipped as mobile schools with teaching materials such as books, whiteboard, pens and toys are helping them. They are part of the government’s project which started in 2003. The books and school bags are free. Every morning, the yellow bus mobile schools arrive near selected slums. “If the children can’t go to school, we have to take the school to them, to their doorstep,” said Sharma, a mobile school teacher. Sharma said that at first parents hesitated to send their children to the mobile school because they were afraid that their children would be cheated. It took the teachers a long time to build their confidence.
Financed by the UK Department for International Development (DFID) in India, the mobile schools project has helped reduce the number of dropouts from 25 million to 5 million. The children are proud because the mobile school comes specially for them. It has changed their lives and given them hope. After joining the bus school, eleven -year -old Meena is very happy with her new life. Although she is young, she understands that education is the key to escaping the poverty. Watching his father die without oxygen support while suffering from a heart attack in 2020, Taher Mahmud Tarif, a Bangladeahi boy, made up his mind to build a device to prevent any more such tragic deaths. Afterwards, many COVID-19 patients experienced low oxygen levels in their blood, with demand for oxygen concentrators (浓缩器) among other medical equipment shooting up during the recent sharp rise in cases. Tarif said the situation gave him more driving force to build the device.
With the financial and overall support of Ishwardi UNO office and his educational institution, Tarif's determination and tireless efforts were rewarded with success as the ninth grader of Ishwardi Sara Marwari High School managed to make the concentrator after trying five times for about seven months, mainly using domestic components. He said that a locally made oxygen eoncentrator like his costs approximately $ 760 whereas an imported one does over $2,600.
In June, Tarif gave a detailed account of his invention and manufacture at the UNO office in Ishwardi at 11:00 am on Tuesday. He said it was created from his own thinking and with the addition of local technology generators and electric components. An oxygen concentrator takes in air and removes nitrogen (氮气) from it, leaving oxygen-enriched gas for use by people needing medical oxygen. “About 90 percent oxygen concentration can be generated from my oxygen concentrator machine. This machine can provide high-flow oxygen supply too. It can be very handy in local areas with no scope of getting oxygen support,”Tarif added.
“This is obviously a good invention for oxygen generation. It is capable of producing high-flow oxygen so it
can be used for patients or refilling oxygen bottles,” said an assistant professor of Pabna Medical College Hospital. “Despite more lab and other examinations before using the machine as medical equipment,” the UNO said, “Tarif's invention will probably be a great achievement during this alarming COVID-19 situation.”
8.Why did Tarif build an oxygen concentrator?
A.Because his father needed one.
B.Because his father died of COVID-19.
C.Because COVID-19 patients need oxygen.
D.Because he wants to help save other patients.
9.What can we know about Tarif's invention in Paragraph 2?
A.It mostly consists of local parts. B.It succeeded at the first attempt
C.It was made without others' help. D.It costs more than 2.600 dollars.
10.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Tarif's invention has not been tested yet.
B.Tarif's invention has a promising future.
C.Tarif's invention produces oxygen botles.
D.Tarif 's invention has proved useful for COVID-19.
11.Where is this text most likely from?

They show that individuals who live or work in low levels of light overnight can develop clinical depression.
Doctors use the words “clinical depression” to describe severe form of depression. Signs may include loss of interest or pleasure in most activities, low energy levels and thoughts of death or suicide.
In the new study, American investigators designed an experiment that exposed hamsters to different colors. The animals were separated into 4 groups. One group of hamsters was kept in the dark during their nighttime period. Another group was placed in blue light, a third group slept in white light. While a fourth was put in red light. After four weeks, the researchers noted how much sugary water the hamsters drank. They found that the more depressed animals drank the less amount of water.
Randy Nelson, who heads the Department of Neuroscience at Ohio State University, says animals that slept in blue and white light appeared to be the most depressed. “What we saw is these animals didn’t show any sleep disruptions at all but they did have messed up circadian clock genes and they did show sign of depression whereas if they were in the pale red light, they did not.” He says there’s a lot of blue in white light, which explains why the blue light and white light hamsters appear to be more depressed than the hamsters that see red light or darkness.
Mr. Nelson has suggestions for people who work late at night, or those who like to stay up late. “My recommendation is if you are just living a typical mostly active life during the day, mostly inactive at night, you need to limit exposure to TVs which are quite bluish in the light they give off and computer screens and things like that. You can get filtered glass, you can get filters on your computer screen and filters on your e-Readers to put it more in the reddish light.”
8.How did the researchers carry out the study?

The number of weather-related disasters has increased by five times over the past 50 years, the latest report by the World Meteorological(气象)Organization(WMO)said on September 1. However, thanks to improved early warning systems and disaster management, the number of death from these hazards(危险)has been almost three times less.
According to the WMO, from 1970 to 2019, weather, climate and water hazards accounted for 50 percent of all disasters. Among the top 10 hazards that led to the largest loss of human life during this period were droughts,
storms, floods and extreme temperatures. However, deaths fell from over 50,000 in the 1970s to less than 20,000 in the 2010s.
"Weather, climate and water extremes are increasing and will become more frequent and severe in many parts of the world as a result of climate change," says WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas.
"That means more heatwaves, drought and forest fires such as those we have observed recently in Europe and North America. We have more water vapor in the atmosphere, which is worsening extreme rainfall and deadly flooding. The warming of the oceans has affected the frequency and area of existence of the most intense tropical storms."
"Economic losses are increasing as exposure increases. But behind the statistics lies a message of hope. Improved multi-hazard early warning systems have led to a significant reduction in deaths. Quite simply, we are better than ever before at saving lives," Taalas said.
8.What do we know from the first paragraph?

By being able to nail for belle food, cuttlefish showed self-control that's linked to the higher intelligence. It was part of an experiment by Alex Schnell from the University of Cambridge and colleagues. “What surprised me
most was the level of self-control shown by cuttlefish. ” she tells Weekend Edition.
The experiment was essentially a take on the classic “marshmallow” experiment from the1960s. In that experiment, young children were presented with one marshmallow and told that if they can resist eating it for several minutes, they will get two marshmallows. But if they eat it, that's all they get. The children who are able to delay gratification do better on tests and are more successful later in life.
To adapt the experiment for cuttlefish, the researchers first figured out the cuttlefish's favorite food: live grass shrimp; and their second-favorite food: a piece of king prawn. Instead of choosing one or two marshmallows, the cuttlefish had to choose either their favorite food or second-favorite food. Each of the food items were placed in clear chambers within their tank. One chamber would open immediately, while the other chamber would only open after a delay. It essentially tested whether they could resist the temptation (诱惑) of their second preference food and wait for their preferred food.
The cuttlefish learned to wait. “Animals like rats and pigeons find it difficult to resist temptation, only waiting for several seconds, ” Schnell says, “while animals such as chimpanzees and parrots show more advanced self-control and wail up to several minutes. And the cuttlefish in our study waited up to between 50 to 130 seconds. ”
Animals that are able to exercise self-control in this way have advantages. For example, animals can hide food to eat later. In cuttlefish, Schnell thinks the delayed gratification relates to their lifestyle. “Individuals who wait for better-quality prey could find food more efficiently and limit their exposure to predators. ”Schnell writes.
12.Why does the writer mention the experiment conducted in the 1960s?
A.To highlight the intelligence of humans.
B.To offer statistics to the experiment for cuttlefish.
C.To show the differences between humans and animals.
D.To provide supporting background information for the following experiment.
13.What can we learn about the experiment for cuttlefish from the passage?
A.The chamber with cuttlefish's favorite food wouldn’t open instantly.
B.The cuttlefish had to choose between the food they liked and the food they disliked.
C.Cuttlefish could not wait to eat their favourite food immediately.
D.The food were put at the same place for cuttlefish to choose from.
14.What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Cuttlefish is probably born with the ability to resist temptation.
B.It is a disadvantage for animals to exercise too much self-control.
C.Cuttlefish may be less intelligent than Chimpanzees.
D.We must take immediate measures to protect cuttlefish.

The scientist who created the world’s first known genetically modified babies, stunning the global scientific community, has been sentenced by a Chinese court to three years in prison, state media reported.
He Jiankui said in November 2018 he had engineered twin girls, offspring of a healthy mother and an HIV-positive father, to be resistant to HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, using a nascent gene-editing technology called Crispr-Cas9. His revelation drew immediate condemnation from bioethicists and fellow scientists in China and beyond, including the inventors of the gene-editing technology. Chinese authorities said in January they were investigating Dr. He, and he was fired from his post as an associate professor at Southern University of Science and Technology, based in the southern city of Shenzhen.
On Monday, a Shenzhen court convicted Dr. He and two others on charges of illegally practicing medicine related to carrying out human-embryo gene-editing intended for reproduction, the official Xinhua News Agency reported. “In order to pursue fame and profit, they deliberately violated the relevant national regulations, and crossed the bottom lines of scientific and medical ethics,” the court said, according to the report. Dr. He also received a lifetime ban from working in the field of reproductive life sciences and from applying for related research grants, Xinhua said, citing local health and science authorities.
Gene editing of embryos is taking place for research purposes in countries including the U. S. and the U.K., in lab settings. Scientists have said they are unaware of any current efforts involving gene editing of embryos for implantation and birth. But policy experts and scientists expect it will happen.
China doesn’t have a law, and although a 2003 guideline prohibited the genetic manipulation of human embryos, it didn’t outline penalties. In February, China’s National Health Commission drafted new rules governing
“high-risk” biotechnology, including gene-editing, that would introduce criminal charges and lifetime research bans if breached, but they have not come into effect. The commission is trying to create suggested guidelines and advice for scientists, clinicians and governments regarding human embryo gene editing. Some countries, Dr. Dzau added, might eventually conclude that human genome editing in embryos is acceptable under certain circumstances such as preventing lethal disease, and move forward. “Then it is up to each country,” he said. “Some decisions may be culture-dependent.”
12.Which of the following about Dr. He is NOT true according to the passage?
A.He was condemned by bioethicists and fellow scientists at home and abroad.
B.He was the first to have created the well-known genetically modified babies.
C.He once worked as an associate professor in Southern University of Science and Technology.
D.He was the only one who was convicted on charges of illegally practicing medicine for reproduction.
13.Why did Dr. He violate the relevant national regulations?
A.China doesn’t have a law to regulate gene editing of embryos
B.He tried to cross the bottom lines of scientific and medical ethics
C.Guidelines governing “high-risk” biotechnology will come into effect.
D.He hoped to pursue fame and profit by commercializing gene editing of embryos.

New Year’s Food Around the World
Hoppin' John, American South
A major New Year's food tradition in the American South, Hoppin' John is a dish of pork-flavored field peas or black-eyed peas (symbolizing coins) and rice, frequently served with collards or other cooked greens (as they're the color of money) and cornbread (the color of gold). The dish is said to bring good luck in the new year.
Different folklore traces the history and the name of this meal, but the current dish has its roots in African and West Indian traditions and was most likely brought over by slaves to North America. A recipe for Hoppin' John appears as early as 1847 in Sarah Rutledge's "The Carolina Housewife" and has been reinterpreted over the
centuries by home and professional chefs.
The dish reportedly got its name in Charleston, South Carolina, and it is a veritable staple of Lowcountry cooking.
Twelve grapes, Spain
The people of Spain traditionally watch a broadcast from Puerta del Sol in Madrid, where revelers gather in front of the square's clock tower to ring in the New Year.
Those out in the square and those watching at home partake in an unusual annual tradition: At the stroke of midnight, they eat one grape for every toll of the clock bell. Some even prep their grapes -- peeling and seeding them -- to make sure they will be as efficient as possible when midnight comes.
The custom began at the turn of the 20th century and was purportedly thought up by grape producers in the southern part of the country with a bumper crop. Since then, the tradition has spread to many Spanish-speaking nations.
Soba noodles, Japan
In Japanese households, families eat buckwheat soba noodles, or toshikoshi soba, at midnight on New Year's Eve to bid farewell to the year gone by and welcome the year to come. The tradition dates back to the 17th century, and the long noodles symbolize longevity and prosperity.
In another custom called mochitsuki, friends and family spend the day before New Year's pounding mochi rice cakes. Sweet, glutinous rice is washed, soaked, steamed and pounded into a smooth mass. Then guests take turns pinching off pieces to make into small buns that are later eaten for dessert.

Chinese scientists have identified a new protein that restricts HIV infection, a discovery that could pave the way for the development of new drugs against the virus. The protein, P-selectin glycoprotein ligand 1 (PSGL-1), which exists in human cells, can inhibit (抑制) the process by which HIV reproduces, according to research published in the science journal Nature Microbiology this month.
However, the study also showed that PSGL-1 can be negatively affected by Vpu-an accessory (附属) protein of HIV-which can neutralize the ability of PSGL-1 to resist HIV. Further research is under way to develop a drug that can inhibit the HIV protein so that PASGL-1 can restrict HIV, according to Tan Xu, a researcher at Tsinghua University's School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, a leading author of the study.
Several other proteins in human cells that could resist HIV have been discovered over the past 10 years, but the virus can also evade (避开) them. PSGL-1 shows particular promise in that it can inhibit the HIV in multiple ways-especially by blocking the infectiousness of virus offspring, Tan said.
“We are starting to research into small molecule (分子) compounds in the hope of finding one that can restore PSGL-1’s anti-HIV function. In this way we can develop a very effective antiviral drug for people with HIV/AIDS,” he said. Tan said it will require at least three to five years for the research to reach the preclinical stage, and more time after that before a clinical trial is possible. The research was conducted by researchers at Tsinghua University in Beijing, Fudan University in Shanghai and George Mason University in the United States.
Existing treatment methods for people with HIV/AIDS, which mostly rely on a combination of different drugs, can prevent the disease from progressing but cannot cure it, and long-term use of drugs can result in drug resistance.
An estimated 37 million people in the world live with HIV, according to the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS. The study provides new leads to developing antiviral drugs, Tsinghua University said in a statement.
12.What can we learn about PSGL-1 from the passage?
A.Both the protein PSGL-1 and the protein Vpu are HIV proteins.
B.PSGL-1 can restrict the function of the protein Vpu.
C.PSGL-1’s molecule compounds have been identified.
D.The protein PSGL-1 functions better than others in resisting HIV.
13.What can we infer from the last three paragraphs?
A.The existing treatment for HIV are far from perfect.
B.It will be a decade before the antiviral drugs is put on the market.
C.American scientists played a leading role in the research.
D.HIV/AIDS will no longer be a deadly disease owing to the new discovery.
14.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.There is a long way to go before curing HIV.
B.More people are faced with the threat of HIV.
C.Chinese scientists are leading the way in curing HIV.
D.A new protein to resist HIV was confirmed by scientists.

The Surprising Benefits of Taking a Cold Shower
You’ll procrastinate(拖延) less.
Putting things off is a habit everyone would love to lose. No one wants to take a cold shower, but the more routinely you bite the bullet and get it over with, the more you’re training your body not to get hung up on those moments of hesitation. As time goes on, this habit will extend to other areas of life.
You’ll be more resistant to stress and depression.
Brief changes in body temperature like a cold shower have been theorized to help brain function and activate beta-endorphin (B-内啡肽) and noradrenaline (去甲肾上腺素) in the brain. Beta-endorphins are “feel-good” molecules that give a sense of well-being. Noradrenaline is an adrenal hormone (肾上腺激素) that helps depressed people feel more “up” naturally. Cold water bathing, meanwhile, also reduces the cortisol hormone (皮质醇激素), which usually kicks into action when stress and anxiety take over.
You’ll get sick far less.
Cold showers lead to higher numbers of white blood cells circulating throughout your body, which is never a
bad thing. Those helpful little cells work hard to protect you from disease and illness.
Your skin and hair will glow.
Cold water tightens your skin that gives a natural glow to the skin. When it comes to your hair, cold showers close and fortify your hair cuticles while adding more strength to them. Moreover, cold water also doesn't harm the natural barrier of your skin and hair.
1.Which of the following can make you less anxious?
A.Noradrenaline. B.Alpha-endorphin.
C.White blood cells. D.The cortisol hormone.
2.How are your skin and hair after cold showers?
A.Tight. B.Strong. C.Natural. D.Shiny.

Amazing and perfectly beautiful, The Midnight Library is everything you’d expect from the genius storyteller, Matt Haig. I picked it up from our readers’ recommendations (we asked our readers to send in some of their favorite recent books) and I can see why it won Best Fiction of 2020 in the Good Reads Choice Awards.
The story follows Nora Seed, a woman who is struggling and feels like nothing in her life has gone according to plan. While the initial chapters of the book are quite sad, Nora finds herself given a chance to start over in the Midnight Library, a magical place full of books of all the different paths her life could have taken. Nora is forced to stay in the library and try out different versions of her life until she finds the life she most wants to live.
I loved the idea that no dream or fork in your road is insignificant, and that they all lead us to become different versions of ourselves. In one life, Nora is an Olympic swimmer. In another, she is a glaciologist living on a boat off the coast of Antarctica. The novel reveals in a beautiful way that the potential we all have within us is impossible to measure, and that we have the possibility to be happy in many different versions of life.
It also discusses how dangerous it can be to live your life with regrets. The Midnight Library revealed to Nora that even if you make very different choices, you may uncover a deeper appreciation for your current home and the people in your life. It is your perspective that matters.
I really loved the fantasy and magical realism in this novel, and I would love for this to be turned into a series where we get to explore The Midnight Library of other characters’ lives as well.

Planet of the Apes
It’s difficult enough for you to make sense of a planet where humans are ruled by talking apes, but when we finally get used to the concept, the ending is really beyond our expectation. Besides, the scene when astronaut George Taylor discovers the remains of the Statue of Liberty in the original 1968 film is really shocking.
The Village
M. Night Shyamalan is one of the few directors who could give us something this clever and wildly imaginative. While it’s common for suspense films to reveal that some fundamental aspect isn’t what it appears to be, in this film set in a 19th century village, basically nothing turns out as it appears.

What do you think of when you hear the word Australia? Kangaroos and beaches? We’ve rounded up some top Aussie travel bloggers who have given us their trips about the best places to visit in Australia.
Blue Mountains
If you’re looking for a dose of nature, the Blue Mountains are for you. Make sure you have time to visit Wentworth Falls. This spot offers walks of varying difficulty with appealing views of the waterfall, and it’s just a short drive from the main event—The Three sisters. These famous rock formations are the highlight of this picturesque (如画的) postcard area. If you head to Echo Point, don’t miss the Science Railway—the steepest passenger railway in the world.

Byron is one of Australia’s top tourist destinations. From countless waterfalls and swimming holes to mountains and bushwalks, this small region hides so much beauty. I would suggest starting with a hike to the
bottom of Minyon Falls for a swim, a hike to the top of Mt Warning for a sunrise, and then a hike to the Natural Arch. These are just some of the most accessible, but there is so much more if you’re willing to explore.
Sunshine Coast
The Sunshine Coast has become one of the most beautiful strips of coastland in Australia, long white beaches lined with health-conscious cafés and boutique clothes shops (精品服装店). When you aren’t absorbing the sunshine on one of the many beaches, you can head out to the hinterland (内陆地区) for a day of mountain hiking or discover the swimming holes and waterfalls with not a soul in sight.

Very, very long ago, dogs didn’t exist. There were just wolves of different kinds. “Dogor”, an 18,000-year-old puppy, was found frozen in the permafrost in Siberia near Yakutsk. Permafrost is a layer of ground in Arctic and Antarctic areas that remains frozen. Recently, areas of permafrost are thawing (解冻) as the world has warmed, and uncovering secrets long buried and frozen.
Dogor came out of the ground covered with mud and ice, but scientists carefully cleaned him. His head, including his nose, hair, eyelashes, and a mouth full of young teeth, is still very much like it was when he died. Scientists from Sweden have tested him carefully. Their tests showed that the puppy lived 18,000 years ago, that it was a male, and that it was about two months old when it died.
But even though the scientists ran two DNA tests to discover whether Dogor was a dog or a wolf, they didn’t get what they wanted. The scientists say that normally it’s fairly “easy to tell the difference”. They now plan on doing a third DNA test. In any case, the results will teach scientists a lot about the history of dogs and when they began to separate from wolves. “We can’t wait to get results from further tests,” said Sergey Fedorov, of the
Mammoth Museum of North-Eastern Federal University.
Some people believe we may soon get even more information about very old animals. Due to the climate change, the world’s temperature has gone up by 1℃, which has led to heat waves, record dry periods, wildfires, record rains, and more strong hurricanes. Since the permafrost in Siberia and other areas is thawing, it’s possible that even more animals will be found, which could help scientists learn more about early history.

At just 19 years old, Akiša Peters teaches at the Sisseton Wahpeton Tribal College. He specializes in a language that is thousands of years old, the Dakota language, spoken by the Dakota people.
“The Dakota language is 'the most important aspect' of Dakota culture. Without it, our Dakota culture would
no longer exist.” Peters claimed. “I was lucky to grow up around many first-language Dakota speakers. But now the elderly continually passed away and at the end of their lives, they just wanted to know their families would continue to have the language. One of the problems our people have is finding ways to get at-length and consistent exposure to the language.”
Aside from instructing at the college level, Peters uses social media to share videos that integrate humor, culture, and basic-level conversation to help teach Dakota. In his free time, he visits Dakota elders. He also started an online group of youth to converse and share the knowledge of the language in a safe and supportive space.
Akiša Peters wants to tell the youth that if they want to learn their own language, sit with their elders and learn from them. Endless vocabulary sheets could discourage them from learning. Standards created by non-speakers could also do that. “Within the next decade, I assume, me, my colleagues, and other Dakota-learning relatives will have children and start a new generation of Dakota. I also hope my brothers and sisters will take the path we laid out for them and continue to learn and speak Dakota On my reservation there are numerous young people working on the comeback of the language. I'm hopeful because I'm definitely not alone.” Akiša Peters told Teenvogue.

Gone are the days when humans covered themselves with blankets to keep warm. It’s now the time to put glaciers under blankets to keep them cool because at the rate climate is changing, this seems like a good idea to keep them from melting.
A ski resort in the Swiss Alps, Switzerland uses blankets to protect the glacier from the warm climate. Gian Darms, who handles snow conditions at the ski resort told about this unique procedure and said, “We lay the fleece over the glacier like a natural protective shield.” The blankets are being used to cover the top of the 10, 623-foot Mount Titlis whose glacier has already melted in the last few decades and it is expected to disappear completely in the next 50 years due to global warming.
To diminish the effect of climate change, resort employees have taken it upon themselves to protect the glacier from the heat and for this process, they spend about five to six weeks every summer covering parts of the glacier with protective polyester fleece. This helps to reflect the sun’s energy back into the atmosphere and prevent the glacier from melting, while also preserving the already fallen snow on the glacier in the previous winter season. After the season passes, the employees remove the coating and use the collected snow to fill in any gaps in the glacier’s surface.
This practice has been going on for a while and the amount of the glaciers covered has increased to almost 100 ,000 square meters now. “We’ve been covering more and more glaciers in the last few years. Almost 30, 000 square meters more this year alone. We will have to cover more glaciers in reaction to the climate change,” said
Darms.
The ski resort’s actions show the intense effect of climate change on glaciers which have been melting at rapid rates in the past few years. Many different resorts have also started covering their glaciers because if there are no more glaciers, then there is no more business for these ski resorts.

C.Climate change is becoming more serious. D.There is a better solution to global warming.
11.From which is the text most probably taken?
A.A travel brochure. B.An advertisement.
C.A news report. D.A geography text book.
