On a Friday evening in December, two weeks before Christmas, I lost my job. I hadn’t seen it coming. I was excited for the weekend, when my daughter, Kristil, then 12, and I planned to get our Christmas tree. Then I listened to my voicemail. “We’re sorry, but your work assignment has ended as of today.” My heart sank.
My paycheck was survival, I did everything I could to give Kristil a good life, but there were some things my love couldn’t fix. The next day as we searched for our tree, I struggled to be cheerful as I eyed the Christmas tree prices. Kristil noticed I was worried and I told her I had lost my job. She wanted to give me the $100 that Grandma gave her, but I refused.
Monday morning, I dropped Kristil at school and set off on my money-making pursuits. I headed to the pawnshop (当铺) with a gold ring my mother had given me, and they gave me $70. Next was the antiques store. I sold six Precious Moments statuettes for $150. I ended the day $220 richer.
Over the next week, I furiously (猛烈地) applied for jobs as my bank account grew smaller. I felt as if the world was closing in on me. On a weekend afternoon, I dropped Kristil in a wealthy gated community for a birthday party. I drove home defeated.
Back at home, I glanced out the window. It had been snowing all morning. I noticed a small woman struggling to open her car door against the wind. As she got out, I realized it was my old professor, Sister Esther. I hadn’t seen her since we’d met for lunch three months ago. I’d first met Sister Esther 10 years earlier, when I was her student at Edgewood College. After I graduated, Sister Esther kept in touch, meeting me for lunch every few months. I had grown to love her like family. I rushed to the front of my building. “What are you doing out in this weather?” I asked as we hugged.
    注意:(1)续写词数应为150左右;
    (2)开头已给出。
Sister Esther said she called my office and knew I wasn’t working there anymore, so she came to see me.

When I was eleven years old, I moved to Tampa, Florida. My parents traveled for a living, so Aunt Emily took care of me while they were away. One rainy morning, there was an old lady who was dressed in a bright orange coat carrying a rubbish bag and a stick. “What’s that old lady doing?” I asked Emily, pointing out of the window to the street in front of the house.
Hearing my question, Emily answered, “She’s picking up rubbish around here for fun.” “Oh,” I answered. “Interesting... Why would someone think picking up rubbish is fun?” For a long time, I often saw that old lady—rain or shine—on my way to school. In the beginning, I thought she was crazy to pick up rubbish. However, I finally smiled and waved at her each time I saw her.
Later, when I moved to college, I’d see rubbish in the grass and feel really angry about it. I’d think, “Why isn’t anyone picking up rubbish? People are so unconcerned!” But shortly after that, I said to myself, “Why do I think picking up rubbish is someone else’s duty?” And I couldn’t walk past trash without feeling guilty (内疚的).
So while walking in the college, I began picking up rubbish and made sure the campus was in better shape than I previously found it. My behavior influenced some students. They started to help me out.
Like me, they also picked up rubbish whenever they noticed it. And our college became more beautiful. Seeing that, I began to think, “If I can pick up rubbish outside the college—in other places of the town, it may make a big difference to the town.”
But picking up rubbish in front of many people outside the college needs courage. It could be embarrassing. But it was the right thing to do. I decided to try it.
    注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
So one day I called up all my courage and collected rubbish on a nearby street.

    3.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was cool and bright and just right for running. I was in the first few miles of a 10-mile race through some hills. Birds were singing on the trees. The soft wind was brushing my cheeks. I felt rested and springy. Despite the hills, I thought it was going to be a fine run.
Ahead was Blake, a student from Burke High School. He was running easily, too, moving along efficiently. The pace felt comfortable, so I decided to stay where he was; why bother concentrating on pace when Blake was such a nice pacesetter for me? I would overtake Blake later on when he used up energy.
So I ran closely behind him. The course headed north for five miles, wandered west for a mile, and then turned south again. The race was getting tougher. With three miles to go, it was beginning to be real hard work. My lungs were on fire, and legs felt like stone.
Blake overtook the boy in front of him. Apparently he knew the boy, for they exchanged a few words. Their brief communication worried me. Runners don’t chat during a race unless they feel really good, and Blake plainly was. There was still a noticeable bounce in his steps, but the springiness I had once possessed was gone.
Still, I was close enough to overtake Blake if he was tired, so I didn’t give up hope completely. We were approaching a hill, a mile from the finish line, so whatever happened on the hill would almost certainly determine who crossed it first.
As I moved up the hill, my attention wandered for a few minutes. When I looked up, Blake was moving away, first five yards, then ten, then more. There was no hope of catching Blake.
    注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
    2. 诮按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Suddenly Blake slowed and sat onto the ground painfully.

I’m so excited because today I’m graduating from high school, finally! I have many mixed feelings. I’m nervous, happy, but most importantly scared for the future. I still haven’t gotten my college letters to see if I got in or not.
Several days passed and slowly my letters started to arrive, sadly refused. All of my options close to home turned me down, which made me scared because I get very homesick. Then I remembered that a month before in the college adviser’s office I applied to a study abroad program in China. I looked at it as a very last choice but now it was my only hope for going to college next year.
The letter arrived and I was accepted! I was happy to go to college but I couldn’t believe it was in China. We all started crying. My parents are very overprotective, they never let me do anything and always make my decisions for me. I was still unsure whether to go or not.
My parents claimed that I wasn’t ready. I didn’t give in. For the first time I made my own decision. They tried to stop me but my mind was determined. All of my life I never tried anything new and now was the perfect time to be outgoing. I would start fresh, meet new people, and learn about a new place and culture. I packed and my parents drove me to the airport, crying all the way. Finally, I said goodbye and left. Time passed so fast and once I opened my eyes I was in China.
    注意:1. 续写词数应为100左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

    5.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was born in a small village in the mountainous province of Lao Cai in Vietnam. In my poverty-stricken small village, girls hardly had the chance to complete their education. But I was lucky. I was born into a family where my parents supported our education. As one of the very few families that could afford all children to continue to study till high school, my parents faced a lot of negative opinions from our neighbors.
I was not always there for the criticism, however, as I lived in boarding schools for ethnic minority (少数民族) children. There were a lot of girls and boys from different ethnic groups in our schools. In these second homes, I learned from teachers and friends and most importantly, I was trained to live independently and with confidence. And this gave me the motivation to try harder every day.
In 2017, I came to Hanoi, the capital city, as a first-year student at the University of Languages and International Studies. It was a life-changing experience for me. I was thrilled at the fact that the students here were so bright and brilliant. The world became much bigger for me—far different from my small town. “Where are you from? Are you an ethnic minority?” Those were the frequent questions I had from my classmates at the beginning. At first, I was afraid of those questions and then I realized that when I began to talk openly about my culture, I was warmly received.
It goes without saying that confidence grows in a nurturing (滋养的) environment. Again, I found myself lucky. Slowly I started to engage in school activities and after some time, I volunteered for community activities.

I was sorting through old photos with my mother, looking for a specific picture of my father. I’d recently gotten a scanner and was in the process of digitizing our family pictures.
“Where on earth is that picture of Mumpsy and Dad?” I asked. I’d seen the picture in a frame at my grandma Virgie’s house when I was a child. It showed my father as a boy, in a suit, holding his beloved Boston terrier (波士顿狗), Mumpsy. It was one of my favorite pictures of him, and the only one I hadn’t found yet.
“Maybe Jean has it,” said Mom. “We could ask her.”
I looked at Mom as if she had three eyes. She could not be serious!
Grandma Virgie had had two sons, Dad and Uncle Ralph, who was married to Jean. Mom and Jean had always had a difficult relationship. Jean would say mean and unfavorable things to Mom while Mom tried to rise above it. Grandma Virgie wanted to help but there wasn’t much she could do. After Grandma passed away, Uncle Ralph’s family stayed in the house and took care of what Grandma left. My parents bought a new house and we moved out. As Mom and Aunt Jean was not on good terms, they purposely broke contact with each other.
With that, any connection we had with Uncle Ralph and Aunt Jean fell apart, and our big family split in two. Both my dad and my uncle were dead now. Mom and I had no contact with Jean.
Yet here was Mom, proposing to reach out to Jean nearly 30 years later.
“I’m in my eighties,” Mom said with a shrug. “Jean’s just a little younger. Neither of us has many years left. Why not give it a try?”
    I couldn’t argue with that.

    7.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
On a Friday evening in December, two weeks before Christmas, my mother and I got home as usual. We were excited for the coming weekend and planned to get our Christmas tree. Suddenly, my mother got her voice mail: “We’re sorry but your work assignment has ended as of today.” The news cast a cloud of gloom over her face. And my heart sank and anxiety sent me spinning — my mother lost her job.
The following days my mother got up early and set out to look for work, but still hadn’t seen it coming. And I noticed that we were running out of natural gas and bills of electricity and water began to pill up. I knew money was tight. One wrong move could send the family into trouble. My mother also wasn’t easy. She wasn’t just a single parent; she was the only parent. My father had been in prison most of his life and I hadn’t met him for a long time. Nevertheless, I’d grown accustomed to the life. My mother did everything she could to give me a good life.
The next day as we searched for our tree in the shop, I struggled to be cheerful as I eyed each price tag. I handed a note of $100 to my mother, but she refused without hesitation, saying “Absolutely not, that’s what grandma gave to you.” I whispered to her “Mom, I don’t want any gifts. All I need is to be with you. I love you forever!” Then I held her by the hand leaving the shop.
Over the next week, my mother crazily applied for jobs as the bank account grew smaller and smaller. We still needed money for rent, food and other daily expenses.
One night, lying on the bed and lost in thought, I decided that it was time for me to do something. At that, I rose up to dial a telephone number.
    Paragraph 1:
The next morning, just on the day before Christmas, I noticed a familiar car pull up in front of my house.

She came into my life when I was seven years old. My dad found her at work. She was wandering and starving. He took one look at her, and said, “Seems like you could use a good home.” He opened up the door to his truck and she jumped in. Her tail wagged (摇动) all the way.
I was still at school when dad arrived home with the puppy. Mom and dad fed her and gave her a bath. This would be my first pet.
I had always wanted a dog. My parents told me when I was old enough and responsible, I could have one. Well, I guess they figured the time was right.
When I walked back home, a white and black puppy with a red bow stuck to her head greeted me with many many puppy kisses. A wild joy took hold of me and a very special friendship was born that day.
Now she needed a name. My older brother laughed at her and said her tail didn’t wag back and forth like others, but went in a circle. He moved his finger around his ear, and said, “She’s squirrely”. Thus my puppy got her name, Squirrely.

The little country schoolhouse was heated by an old-fashioned, pot-bellied coal stove (火炉). An eight-year-old boy named Glenn Cunningham had the job of coming to school early each day so that he could use kerosene(煤油)to start the fire and warm the room before his teacher and his classmates arrived.
One cold morning, someone mistakenly filled the kerosene container he used with gas, and disaster struck. The class and teacher arrived to find the schoolhouse enveloped in a big fire. Terrified on realizing that Glenn was inside, they rushed in and managed to drag the unconscious(无意识的)little boy out of the flaming building more dead than alive. He had major burns over the lower half of his body and was rushed to a nearby county hospital.
From his bed, the seriously burned, half-conscious little boy faintly heard the doctor talking to his heart-broken mother. The doctor told his mother that her son would surely die-which might be for the best, really-for the terrible fire had ruined the lower half of his body. From the waist down, Glenn had no ability to move at all. His thin, scarred legs just hung there, all but lifeless.
But the brave boy didn’t want to die. Glenn made up his mind that he would survive. And somehow, to the amazement of the physician, he did survive.
Returning home, Glenn was seen either in a wheelchair or in bed. One sunny day his mother wheeled him out into the yard to get some fresh air. Over the grass and the strong white fence bordering their lot, he watched other boys playing joyfully. He couldn’t help looking back on the happy days before the disaster. With his thoughts wandering back to those old golden memories, this brave little boy made up his mind.

Chloe was 83 years old and lived by the ocean shore in a big beautiful house. She wished her son Steve would visit her, even if for only a day. Of course, the young man had a family of his own now, a darling little daughter Eva, and a business to take care of. Steve got on video calls with Chloe every other day. However, Chloe thought of her son and granddaughter, wishing she was with them. One day, Chloe heard sounds from the neighboring house. Chloe looked through the window and was delighted to see that she had new neighbors.
One morning, when Chloe woke up and walked along the shore, she heard the sounds of water being splashed and the sound of children laughing wildly. She followed the sound and was concerned on finding the twins from the neighboring house standing knee deep in ocean water. Something didn’t feel right. “Why would anyone leave their kids unattended on the shore?” Chloe thought. She grabbed the kids’ hands and walked them to their home. As Chloe opened the door, she found the young mother lying unconscious on the kitchen floor. Chloe didn’t waste a second in calling 911.
The first responders managed to revive (恢复) her consciousness on the spot. “My boys! Ralph! Ray!” the woman cried out to her kids as the ambulance took her away. Chloe said, “Don’t worry. Everything will be alright. I’ll take care of your sweet boys.” She kept her promise and looked after the kids like a grandmother. She took Ralph and Ray in and let them sleep in the bedroom that was specially made for her granddaughter Eva.
It was during these days that she knew that the boys’ father died of illness. Chloe knew that the neighbor, Phoebe, had been trying to make ends meet by selling sweaters and socks that she knit. Looking at Phoebe’s children eat and drink with such joy, she realized how much she longed to see her little Eva. By the time Phoebe came home from the hospital, the kids had already started calling Chloe “Grandma”.

    11.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I ran after the train, shouting, “Hey mister, can’t you see me?” It was hopeless, as no conductor is going to slow down for a 60-year-old man who got to the station several minutes late. They absolutely didn’t know how important that day, that train ride was to me! I was on my way to an interview for what could have been the opportunity of a lifetime.
I threw both my hat and my art case down in depression, and sat down on the nearest chair, wiping (擦掉)the sweat from my face and breathing heavily. I would have to wait a whole day for the next train, and by then my appointment with the gallery owner would have given up on me. Perhaps it was for the best. It was, after all, the first time in 40 years anyone had shown such an interest in my art. Maybe if the gallery owner had seen all my paintings, he would have changed his mind about offering me space on his walls.
Disappointment filled my soul. Should I dial the gallery and get an interview on a different day? But Pierre Gianni was the owner of the most well-known gallery in New York City. Why would he give a rare second chance to an elderly nobody when he had the newest, coolest young artists to choose from?
Come to think of it, perhaps these insecurities were the very reason I had never been offered a show before. I was too afraid to try. I found countless excuses not to offer my work up to be seen and perhaps criticized. I told myself it would hurt too much if I failed, but the truth was that I had never tried.
Finally, I gathered all my courage to dial the gallery, only to find my antique cell phone had broken down. It was at the very moment that I was in total despair and decided to go home.

“I hate you!” I shouted, as I ran up the stairs to my room. Throwing open my dresser drawers, I pulled out a clean T-shirt and jeans, threw them in my backpack and ran back down the steps. Mom and Dad stood there, looking like they were in shock.
“Where are you going?” Mom asked.
“Anywhere but here,” I shouted as I ran out the door. They weren’t fast enough to hold me, and I disappeared into the night. It was cold, but my hot temper(脾气) warmed me, and I didn’t feel it.
I hit the streets with my thumb(拇指) out. A free ride wasn’t safe, but I didn’t care. Deep down inside, I knew my parents loved me, but it wasn’t enough. I slept on a park bench the first night I took off. It was hard as a rock, and I was surprised to find that I wasn’t alone. Pecking through half-closed eyes, I could see other homeless people just like me, only they looked like they’d been there a long, long time.
By the end of the second day, I’d made my way to another city sixty-five miles away where I found a halfway house for runaways. I was tired, cold and hungry. By the time I got there, the kitchen was closed. All that was left on the table was a cold potato. I lifted it to my lips and bit into the skin. It was dry and stuck in my throat when I tried to eat it up. That night I slept on a small bed in a room with four other runaways. It wasn’t a whole lot better than the park.
Three days later, my dad showed up at the front door of the halfway house. I don’t know how he found out I was there, but part of me was glad he did, though I wouldn’t admit it out loud. After gathering my few things, we drove home in silence. I could see by the look on his face that he felt responsible for all my anger and sadness. I regretted shouting at my parents the night I ran away.

Rushing into the IGA that fall afternoon, I did not know I would get to be a part of something beautiful. In all honesty, I can’t even remember why I was in this grocery store. I can’t remember what was in my cart or what I went in for. But I do remember it was close to Thanksgiving. That is the important part of this story-the when, not the what.
After selecting my items, I proceeded to the checkout line. I noticed a young woman in the line in front of me. Her clothes were raggedy, and she looked so tired. She had a toddler who could not have been more than three and a newborn who was just a few weeks old. Exhausted is how I would describe her. The toddler was running and jumping around just like toddlers do. The baby was crying. My heart went out to her. I had been in her shoes with my own two sons.
She managed to get her groceries on the conveyor belt (传送带) amidst all the chaos of her kids, and the clerk started checking out her items. As I stood behind her, I noticed that she was losing patience with her kids bat didn’t know what to do. She was trying to balance both tasks without causing a huge disturbance. The line behind me continued to snake its way into an aisle (过道).The pressure was growing.
As I watched her, I remembered a time that I had been in a grocery store with a toddler who was running around and a screaming baby. I remembered the ill-tempered, old man behind me and the bad comment he made to me as I checked out. That memory took me away from the IGA line for a moment. When I came back to the present, I realized that the young woman was looking at a few items and trying to decide what she needed to put back. The people in line behind me were getting impatient and frustrated. The dancing toddler and screaming baby just added to the stress of her situation.

Helen was a young girl. Her parents taught her to be kind, and she always was. And she lived a happy life. Unluckily, one day, her mother had an accident. Her right leg was hurt badly and needed an expensive operation.
Her family couldn’t afford to pay for it. Although their friends and relatives all tried their best to offer help but it was far from enough. And they were unsure what to do next.
One day, walking down the street to a bookstore nearby, Helen noticed an old man trying hard to climb the steps to a nearby park. The old man with Alzheimer’s disease (阿尔茨海默氏症)left home days ago and ended up wandering around the streets while his son, Dr. Smith, a doctor of the City Hospital, had been trying to find him but in vain.

“I’m so hungry, ” he murmured. “I want to walk… to the park for… a rest. ” After helping him sit on a park bench, Helen rushed home and returned with some food, only to find the man was lying on the ground, unconscious. “Sir, please wake up!” she cried in anxiety. “‘What should I do?” she wondered.

When I was 13, I climbed my first mountain — a fairly gentle 3,900-foot hilltop near where I live. And later it became my hobby.
I often go climbing with my friend Mel Olsen. Two years ago, on December 30, when I was 16, she and I drove to Oregon to climb 11,240-foot Mount Hood.
That day, we started at 3 a.m. The temperature was about 14 degrees, and we wore thick clothes. Along the way, we met two other climbers, and the four of us continued on together.
After about five hours, we reached Devil’s Kitchen, a place at about 10,000 feet, just before the final push to the top. By this point, the wind conditions were terrible. The other climbers decided to turn back, but Mel and I went ahead.
The track we followed grew narrower and steeper (陡峭的). At around 9 a.m., we reached an ice step. It was about three or four feet tall and very steep. I volunteered to go first. I placed my left foot on the ice step. Confident I was safe, I put my full weight on it. Suddenly, I heard a crack, and a whole sheet of ice broke off the step, right under my foot.
In an instant, I fell backward. I could hear Mel calling my name as I rolled down the mountain as if I were a character in a video game. I remember thinking, This is it. You’re done.
After a few seconds, I came to a stop on a shallow incline (斜面) just above the Devil’s Kitchen. I’d fallen 600 feet. My clothes were shredded (撕碎), my helmet was broken, and my face was bloodied. I was suffering from a sharp, serious pain in my left leg.

Adam, 8, and Peter, 10, played at the seaside with their mom every day. Every single day, they would come across an old man who would sit quietly on a chair, watching the waves.
One day, the brothers approached him. For some reason, the old man who always avoided people started a long conversation with the two boys and introduced himself as Walter Bridgeton. After a while, Peter finally asked the question they had been longing to ask: “Sir, why do you sit out here every day?”
“Well, I have been waiting here for my brother, James, for 10 years. We were in the army together and then were sent to different countries. This happened a long time ago. When we last saw each other, we promised to meet right here, where we used to walk with our mother,” the old man explained.
“How do you know he’s still coming?” Adam asked.
“That’s the thing. I don’t know. They gave me his army dog tags(军籍身份牌), but they never found him. He is still missing,” he said. The old man patted the boys’ heads and said, “Look after your brother, boys.”
The boys enjoyed his company ever since that day, and they were also surprised to know they lived near each other. Deeply moved by Walter’s story, the brothers decided to use social media to spread it, hoping to find his brother. One day, they went to the beach to tell him about what they did, but didn’t find him at his usual spot. “Something must have happened. Let’s go to his house now,” Peter said.

“Where’s the rest of my paper?” thundered an angry Papa Bear, storming into the living room. It didn’t take him long to find Brother Bear and the sports section.
“I just borrowed it.“ said Brother. Papa snatched it up and plumped down in his easy chair. Brother wandered into the kitchen looking for sympathy from Mama Bear. “Gee,” he said, “what’s eating him?” “Your father looks forward to his evening paper,” Mama said, “and he has a perfect right to be annoyed when half of it is missing — and furthermore, thank you not to refer to your father as him!”
She stomped out of the kitchen.
“Why not? He’s a him, isn’t he? Gosh,” said Brother, “what’s eating her?”
What was “eating” Mama was Sister Bear. Sister had been on the phone with Lizy Bruin for almost an hour.
“But Mama!” she protested when she was told to say good-bye.
“Don’t But Mama’ me!“ said Mama Bear. “This is not your private phone. You’ve had all day to talk to Lizy at school, and you’ll have all day to talk to her tomorrow. So hang up that phone now!”
Sister did as she was told.
“Phew!” breathed Brother as he fell into the seat beside Cousin Fred on the school bus.
    “Tough morning?” asked Fred.
“You better believe it!” said Sister, taking the seat Lizzy had saved for her.
The four compared notes on the way to school. The children agreed that while there was no doubt that their parents loved them, they were a little difficult to get along with sometimes. They nagged (唠叨); they said no a lot; and they never wanted kids to have any fun.
“Hey,” said Brother as they got off the bus, “what are we going to do for the Parents Night Talent Show?” “Don’t know,” said Lizzy. “Let’s think about it”
When the four searched their brains, Brother snapped his fingers and said, “I’ve got it! Remember what we were talking about just now?” “Sure,” said Fred. “We were saying how grownups can be a big pain.”

“Well,” said Brother, “let’s put on a play about that, and call it...”

Emma was very excited Today was the championship baseball game! The winners would all get trophies(奖杯) and be the number one players in the town. Emma decided to bring home a trophy to put on her shelf. She had never won a trophy before.
She put on her red uniform and pulled her hair through the back of her baseball cap. She picked up her gloves and looked in the mirror. “I hope I get a hit today,” she said to herself.
On the way to the field, Emma felt nervous.
“Are you feeling OK, Emma?” her mother asked.
“I really don’t want to strike out(三击不中出局),” Emma said.
“Just keep your eye on the ball and don’t feel afraid. You can do it,” Emma’s mother said.
Emma was a great hitter in practice, but she had never hit a ball during a game. She always struck out.
When the game started, Emma cheered loudly for her friends. She caught a fly ball in the Outfield, and everyone cheered for her. Emma struck out when it was her turn to hit the ball, but her team was doing well.
The game was tied(平局), and it was her team’s last chance to score. The team’s coach encouraged, “Believe in yourselves, and you are the best.” Frankie was up first, and he hit the ball hard to get on base(垒). Next up was Henry, but he struck out. Thirteen, for me, was a challenging year. I moved to a now town with my father, far from my old family and friends, I was terribly lonely and would cry myself to sleep each night. To ease my sadness, my father purchased an old horse for me at a local auction. I named him Cowboy.
Cowboy was undoubtedly the ugliest horse in the world. But I didn’t care. I loved him beyond all reason.
I joined a riding club and suffered rude comments and mean snickers about Cowboy’s looks. I never let on about how I felt, but deep inside, my heart was breaking. The other members rode beautiful, registered horses.
When Cowboy and I entered the events where the horse is judged on appearance, we were quickly shown the gate. No amount of preparation and love would turn Cowboy into a beauty. My only chance to compete would be in the speed events. I chose the jumping race.
One girl named Becky rode a big brown horse in the race events. She always won the blue ribbons. Needless to say, she didn’t feel threatened when I competed against her at the next show. She didn’t need to. I came in next to last.
The stinging memory of Becky’s smirks(得意的笑) made me determined to beat her. For the whole next month I woke up early every day and rode Cowboy five miles to the arena(竞技场). We practiced running and jumping for hours in the hot sun and then I would walk Cowboy home totally exhausted.
All of our hard work didn’t make me feel confident by the time the show came. I sat at the gate and sweated it out while I watched Becky and her horse charge through the course and finish in first place.

    A Water Boy
It was the longest heat wave anyone could remember, and Sebastian couldn’t wait to cool off at the beach with his dad. Before heading out of town, they stopped at the library down the street to return a few books.
Sebastian noticed several workers on the library roof. “What are they doing?” he asked. Dad watched them for a moment. “Fixing the roof.” He shook his head as they drove away. “Hot day for that. I worked as a roofer for a few years. Hardest job I ever had.”It was then that an idea flashed across Sebastian’s head:I bet they could need some drinking water. But the idea disappeared just quickly from the ten-year-old’s mind, for his thoughts all turned to swimming.
The sea was perfect for swimming, and the light wind cooled the air. But all too soon they were headed home. Sebastian was half listening to the car radio when the DJ gave the weather report. “The record breaking heat will continue throughout the afternoon,”she added. “If you have to be outside, remember to drink enough water.” What the DJ said reminded Sebastian of his just-finished soccer camp. Even with frequent water breaks, it had been terribly hot. His jersey stuck to his skin so stubbornly at the end of each day that he could hardly pull it off. Suddenly, Sebastian remembered the roofers. “What happened to them?”Sebastian thought to himself. He immediately asked his dad to drive to the library.

    参考答案:
    1.          Sister Esther said she called my office and knew I wasn’t working there anymore, so she came to see me. I gave her a warm welcome and led her into my room. Upon arriving, she told me urgently, “Hearing the news that you were fired from the work, I felt greatly worried. I know you are raising a big family and bearing a large life financial pressure. So I come here and give the gifts for you and Kristil.” She said as she kissed me on the cheek. While saying, she handed me a big package and a Christmas card. (71)
When I opened the Christmas card she gave me, I was shocked at an unexpected gift. Into the package placed a doll and a large envelop. Tears of gratitude puddled in my eyes as I picked up the precious gift, which could help me get through the tough time and buy the Christmas tree that I promised to give my daughter. Feeling gratitude, I hugged Sister Esther tightly and thanker her sincerely. (68)

As strange as it might seem, picking up rubbish is kind of fun for me! Gradually, many people realized I was volunteering to help make our town clean. They praised me and thanked me. Then I decided to encourage more students to do this in the town.
I thought if more students took part in the voluntary activity, things would be much better. We bought each student a bright orange coat with words on it: Let’s make our town cleaner! And we took time to not only pick up rubbish but also sort through it and recycle it. Something amazing happened—the strangers around us helped us out too! Most of them were in primary school and learning a foreign language was a luxury for them. I am also proud to be different in my effort to be the better version of myself every day. At this time, I couldn’t help but cry. As she left, my mother opened the Christmas card and an envelope fell. As she opened it, I saw there was money inside. I gasped in shock. Hundred-dollar bills poured onto the table. Tears of gratitude puddled in my eyes as mother counted the money. Grandma had given me $1, 000. I silently thanked grandma in my heart. It has been 13 years since that Christmas, but I have never forgotten what she did for us.

    9.        Instead of sitting there, he threw himself from the wheelchair. Glenn pulled himself across the grass, dragging his legs behind him. He worked his way to the fence. With great effort, he raised himself up on the fence. Then he began dragging himself along the fence, determined that he would walk. He started to do this every day until he wore a smooth path all around the yard beside the fence. There was nothing he wanted more than to develop life in those legs. Ultimately through his daily massages, his iron persistence and his resolute determination, he did develop the ability to stand up, then to walk haltingly(断断续续), then to walk by himself - and then - to run.
Glenn began to run to school. Later in college he made the track team. Still later in Madison Square Garden this young man who was not expected to survive, who would surely never walk, who could never hope to run - this determined young man, Dr. Glenn Cunningham, ran the world’s fastest mile!

Chloe hugged her and said there was no need to feel indebted to her. “Your kids have ended up making room in my old heart. This house is yours as much as it is mine, darling,” Chloe said. That was the beginning of a lifelong friendship between Chloe and Phoebe. Chloe looked after the kids while Phoebe went to a new job she had found, and Phoebe took care of Chloe like her own mother.
One Thanksgiving, when Chloe and the Phoebes were talking, Chloe’s door was knocked. It was her son Steve and her granddaughter, Eva! Steve thought it would come as a surprise for his mother. I wanted to express my heartfelt gratitude to him but words got stuck in my throat. Taking the phone he passed to me, I managed to collect myself and plucked up my courage to dial Pierre. After what seemed like an eternity, the phone was picked up. To my great relief, Pierre agreed to postpone the interview.

The next morning I got to the gallery on time. I was staring at its grandeur when Pierre approached and welcomed me warmly. Several minutes later, with trembling hands I opened my art case and showed him my paintings one by one. Pierre fixed his eyes on my works with interest, listening to me attentively. Time ticking by, I grew more and more confident and excited. He loved my works! They were scheduled to be exhibited one month later! As I stepped inside, she opened her arms wide and I fell into them. Dad was right behind me and put his arms around both of us. Ordinarily, I’d pull away, but this time I didn’t. They both released me a few moments later, and that’s when I saw the tears in Mom’s eyes. I lowered my head and blinked twice really fast, trying to hide my own tears. I made a promise to myself not to hurt them like that again. They were doing the best they could. 15.     As Mel made her way down, I shouted for help, and other climbers came to assist me. They splinted my leg and called for rescue. Mel stayed by my side while I tried not to cry from the pain. I’d been lying on the ice shivering for four hours by the time the rescuers reached me. They strapped me into a sled and pulled me down the mountain. And then I was taken to a hospital, where I stayed for four days. The doctors told me it would be a year before I could climb again, but I was back on the trails within six months.
The fall has made me more careful. One slip on a mountain can change everything. But the experience also made me grow as a person. There was a lot of media attention following the accident; strangers commented on the videos, calling me bad names and saying I’d put others in danger. I think handling all that at such a young age helped me mature. Since the accident, I’ve climbed another 60 mountains. I’m not going to let one fall and its aftermath keep me from doing my favorite thing in the world.

17.“Well” said Brother “let’s put on a play about that, and call it…” “The Trouble with Grownups!” shouted all the others. “Sensational!” said Sister as they slapped hands, delighted with the idea of showing parents how hard it is being cub. Putting on a play is easier said than done. You have to write it, figure out who is going to play the parts, then memorize it. Then you have to worry about costumes and scenery. The cubs did all that. It was hard, but it was fun, and they did it all in secret. The four practiced their parts, and before they knew it, it was time for the big Parents Night Talent Show.
Despite the difficulties in the preparation, especially costumes, their big day came finally. The audience of parents laughed and laughed when they saw how they seemed to their cubs. Mama and Papa laughed until tears rolled down their cheeks. Papa laughed, too, but not as much as Mama.
They both thought the play, which was a big surprise to them, was very well done. They admitted that it helped them understand what it was like being a cub.
Later, when they were going back home, Papa said, “I have a better idea how cubs feel now.” Mama agreed.
“After all, we were cubs once ourselves,” said Mama. “And here’s a thought: You’ll be grownups someday and, each probably have cubs of your own.”
Brother and Sister thought about that for a moment. They looked at each other. Then they looked out into the distance and thought about it. It was something to think about.

    19.       My turn finally came. I put on my hat, rubbed Cowboy’s neck and entered the arena. At the signal, we dashed toward the first fence, jumped it without trouble and raced on to the next one. Cowboy then flew over the second, third and fourth fences like a bird and I turned him toward the finish line.
As we crossed the line the crowd was shocked into silence. Cowboy and I had beaten Becky and her fancy horse by two seconds! I gained much more than a blue ribbon that day. At thirteen, I realized that no matter what the odds, I’d always come out a winner if I wanted something badly enough to work for it.

When they reached there, the roofers were still working in the heat. Seeing them sweating a lot in the hot sun, Sebastian decided to take some drinking water to them. He shared the idea with his dad, who nodded without hesitation. Sebastian collected the bottled water left in the car, then went to the nearby supermarket and bought plenty using his pocket money. After all this was ready, they returned to the library and asked the roofers to have a water break.
The roofers all climbed down happily for a water break. “Thank you for your timely water! Our water boy!” they all said as they passed around the bottles and opened them. “You deserve a big thumbs up,” one worker said between gulps. Hearing the workers’ praises and seeing bright smiles on their faces, Sebastian felt so happy. It was a small thing, but still, it made Sebastian and the people he helped feel good.
