It was November 20, 2019, and Ousland, the leading polar explorer of his generation, and adventurer Mike Horn had set out two months earlier with an great goal: to ski across the top of the world. They’d been in total isolation(孤立) ever since, making their way, step by step, along the increasingly fragile(易碎的) ice floating over the Arctic Ocean. It was one of the most daring polar journeys in history—and the men were in trouble. The ice was breaking around them, opening in gaping cracks(裂缝), the most critical challenge. Not a single ship or fishing boat was around there. Slowed by the poor conditions, the sleds they pulled were nearly empty of food. Horn’s frostbitten hands, virtually useless in the cold, were dangerously infected.    Now their expedition(探险) manager, Lars Ebbesen, was on the phone from Norway with a lifeline. A passing Norwegian icebreaker happened to be in the sea north of Svalbard and would briefly be in position to serve as a refueling platform for a helicopter(直升机) to reach them. For one day only, they could be rescued. Should he give the OK to start the rescue? Ebbesen, who had worked with Ousland for years, had never heard him so exhausted and “into his resources”. Yet the legendary Arctic strongman, speaking in a weary tone, did not hesitate or consult his partner, “No, we will continue.”    Newspapers actively covered the men’s daring journey across front pages and TV news broadcast regular updates. Ousland’s son was having trouble sleeping and told reporters that at 57 his father was “not as young as he was before”. Ousland’s mother, who had never before felt the need to call Ebbesen and check on her son during expeditions, rang over and over.    But the two chose to continue and luckily enough they finally arrived at north pole and attained enormous precious photos there. After 87 days in Arctic isolation, the two men came back and delivered a television interview. People honoured them as national heroes.4What is a key trouble facing the two men?A. They run out of food and energy. B. Horn’s hands were totally useless.C. Their health was in poor condition. D. Floating ice kept cracking around them.5What would be sent to rescue them if they had agreed?A. A helicopter. B. A rescue team. C. An icebreaker. D. A fishing boat.6How does Ousland’s son feel about the journey?A. Inspired. B. Satisfied. C. Concerned. D. Interested.7Which can be the best title for the text?A. People Have Great Interest in North Pole ExpeditionB. The Exploration Conditions of North Pole Are ToughC. Two Brave Men Made an Exciting Trip to the North PoleD. Two Famous Explorers Were Saved During Their Exploration    On January 17, the “Chinese Bridge” Cultural Experience & Exchange Programme kicked off at Chongqing Bashu Secondary School. International students will attend Humanities, Languages, Cultures Winter Camp online during the next week. “Chinese Bridge” is a large-scale programme for international Chinese language education sponsored by the Centre for Language Education and Cooperation. Since its launching in 2002, “Chinese Bridge” has been serving as a vital platform for Chinese language learning, understanding of China, and Chinese culture experiencing and a bridge connecting Chinese and foreign young people.    Aside from Chinese language courses, the Programme also opens courses on tea culture, Tai Chi, calligraphy, and illustration painting and holds lectures on Bayu culture. Chinese students and international students in Chongqing will be invited to share their studies and life in this city. As a result, they can help promote Chinese culture, assist attendees of the Programme in understanding China’s developments, build friendships with the attendees, and draw more international students to study in the country.    “Chongqing is attracting foreign students to study in China, more than just sending Chinese students to study abroad. It has turned into a cultural pioneer from an inheritor (继承人). Becoming the programme host proves that Chongqing has made remarkable achievements in international cooperation and educational reform,” said Li Bin, Director of International Cooperation and Exchange Division, Chongqing Municipal Education Commission.    At the end of the first day of the winter camp, students shared how they felt. Hellen from Altai State University in Russia said with excitement, “I love the Chinese classical dance and instrument performances! But my favourite is the chorus, which is said to be the theme song of the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games. It is so beautiful, and I will learn to sing it.” Jac, a Chinese language teacher from KCE International School Cambodia, praised the adequate preparation by the Bashu Secondary School, and said it would be a fun and valuable learning experience for students.8What is the function of Paragraph 1?A. To provide the background.B. To introduce the topic.C. To make readers interested.D. To show the importance of the “Chinese bridge”.9What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?A. The ways to attract more international students.B. The popularity of Chinese courses.C. The importance of painting.D. The content and the positive result of the courses.10What does the underlined word “adequate” mean in the last paragraph?A. Enough. B. Terrible. C. Common. D. Original.11In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?A. Entertainment. B. Health. C. Education. D. Science.    “In a close cooperation between several first class chemists, physicists, and biologists, we have developed a very efficient water filter (净水器). It does not need any energy source but sunlight,” said Forró. “Thus our device can supply clean drinking water even at remote places.” The small, adaptable flat-bodied device was designed at Switzerland’s EPFL research institute, by a team led by Prof. László Forró.    Water enters via a tube(管子) in the top, flows through a multilayer composite(复合的) material sandwiched between two sheets of glass, and exits through a tube in the bottom. The composite material is made up of titanium dioxide nanowires (TDN,二氧化钛纳米线) interwoven with carbon nanotubes. When the filter is exposed to sunlight, the UV light(紫外线) causes the composite to produce a group of molecules(分子) known as reactive oxygen species. These molecules are highly effective at killing harmful bacteria and viruses. Its potential challenge when working outdoors is rainy or cloudy days.    The filter has already been successfully tested on water containing E. coli bacteria, with results indicating that it should also have no problem ridding of other harmful bacteria. In fact, it is believed that the technology may also prove effective at ridding of micro- pollutants such as pesticides(杀虫剂) and drug remains. It should be noted that when activated by UV light, titanium dioxide nanowires on their own are capable of killing harmful viruses and bacteria. For that matter, even UV light alone can purify water, if the water is left sitting in the sunlight in a transparent container.    However, Prof. Forró told us that his team’s filter is much more effective—this is due in part to the carbon nanotubes’ ability to absorb heat from the sunlight, making the purification process faster. The present small-scale model can treat 2 liters (0.5 gal) of water per day, although that figure would rise considerably if the technology were to be scaled up.12Why can the new filter work at remote areas?A. It is small and flat-shaped. B. It can be powered by sunlight.C. It’s designed by famous scientists. D. It can be efficient in cleaning water.13Which aspects of filter does Paragraph 2 mainly focus on?A. Working conditions. B. Appearance and possible effects.C. Strengths and weaknesses. D. Structure and working process.14What can we learn from Paragraph 3?A. The filter can get rid of a lot of pesticides.B. The filter can kill all bacteria of the water.C. UV light alone is effective in purifying water.D. TDN can kill viruses without being activated.15What’s the author s purpose of writing the passage?A. To state a new function of UV light.B. To introduce a solar-driven water filter.C. To inform the discovery of a new material.D. To stress the effectiveness of a water filter.二、七选五16    Nose bleeds occur when the inner lining of one’s nose is hurt or dry. _____ If you understand the causes of nose bleeds and know how to handle them, you can better manage your own nose bleeds and prevent future bleeding.    Position your body.    If you do not have a serious issue that led to your nose bleed, you can perform some first aid at home during a nose bleed to help stop it. _____ Then, lean head forward so that the blood flows through the nostrils (鼻孔).    Compress the nose.    With a finger and thumb (拇指), pinch () the lower end of the nose, completely blocking the nostrils. Pinching at this point directly applies pressure at the region where the blood vessels (血管) are damaged. _____ Keep pinching the nose for 10 minutes, then release. While you do this, breathe through the mouth.    _____    Lowering your body temperature can help reduce the blood flow to your nose. To do this, place ice cubes in your mouth. This helps achieve a lower temperature sooner than cooling the external part of the nose. It also will help you remain at the lower temperature for longer. This is more effective than placing a cold compress over the nose.    Use oxymetazoline (羟甲唑啉) nasal sprays (喷剂).    While you have a nose bleed but not on a regular basis, you can try a nose spray if you do not have high blood pressure issues. This medication partly narrows the blood vessels in your nose. _____ Sprays are used only if bleeding does not stop on pinching the nose after the first 10 minutes.A. Keep yourself calm.B. Cool yourself down.C. This sends pressure to the bleeding point and stops the flow of blood.D. Its resulting damage to small blood vessels in the nose causes bleeding.E. To begin, sit down, since it is more comfortable to seat yourself than standing.F. Frequent use of this drug, which is more than 3-4 days at a time, can cause addiction.G. If the bleeding continues after 10 to 15 minutes, repeat spraying the drug 3 times on both sides of the nose.三、完形填空(15空)    About a year ago, as I prepared to leave the house, the telephone rang. Every Sunday morning, I go jogging in this park. As I circle the lake, I notice an elderly woman sitting by the water with a metal cage beside her.    Today, my curiosity made me stop and approach her.    As I took a closer look, I saw that the cage was actually a small metal trap, and there were a few turtles walking around the trap, unharmed. The lady took one of the turtles in her hands and gently rubbed the shell () with a sponge (海绵) brush.    I came over to say hello to her politely. “Good morning,” I said. “I come here for jogging every Sunday morning and I see you sitting here by the lake. Please don’t mind my curiosity and innocence, but I really want to know what you’re doing to the turtles.”    The lady smiled and said, “I am cleaning the turtle’s shell. Turtles gradually get more and more algae (水藻) and other dirt on their shells, which weighs them down and prevents their swimming abilities. It also reduces their ability to absorb heat. Over time, their shells become weak and rot (腐烂) away.”    “Oh wow! That’s really thoughtful of you!” I shouted in shock.    She continued, “Every Sunday morning, I spend a couple of hours by the lake to relax and help out these little guys stay clean. Strange as it sounds, this is my little way to make a difference in the world.”    I thought for a while and said, “But all freshwater turtles have algae and other dirt on their shells. Every little act of kindness counts.    Can I help you clean the turtles?” I asked the lady. “Of course, you can,” she nodded and said with pleasure. She taught me patiently and told me how to make the turtles clean again. “You should rub the shell of them gently, otherwise you will hurt them,” she reminded me. I picked up a little turtle, trying to imitate her and using the sponge brush to clean the shell. With the algae and scum got rid of, the turtle looked relaxed and joyful.
