In today’s world life is fast. If you don’t slow down to enjoy it, you will definitely miss something. I’ve got two young boys and I have up until recently been an elementary school teacher. Days were busy. Get the boys ready for school and daycare. Work a full day. Pick them up after school. Cook dinner. Do housework. Get the boys into bed and before I knew it, the day was over! Time for me to hit the sack and do it all over again the next day!
Don’t get me wrong. I wouldn’t change anything. The boys are great. Everyone just gets stuck in these daily routines and tends to forget about fun until that one vacation week a year. Everyone needs a break and should have fun all year round. Just set aside one day a week and just go and do something. There are so many fun family things to do that won’t break the bank. You don’t need to head out to that theme park and spend a month’s salary on one day. A nice day at the park or museum can entertain everyone. There are nearby state parks that you can easily run out to and camp in for under $50 for the entire family. How about family movie night? What about family video game night? There are so many ideas that folks seem to forget about. I encourage you to take a look at Modern Frugal Family. You can find all sorts of fun stuff to do with the family and search for all sorts of bargains. I know you will come up with some great ideas. If you do, you can share them with everyone. So get out there and enjoy life!

Studies have shown most people fail to realise how much time they spend on their smartphones each day.
Frank and Amelia’s family were put to a test, using a free app called “Moment-Screen Time Tracker”. The Vascellaros—Frank, Amelia, 14-year-old twins Frankie and Joe, and 17-year-old Sam—all said they did not really know they were spending so much time on their phones each day.
“Honestly, I don’t feel like I’m on my phone a lot,” Amelia Vascellaro said. Amelia was on her phone far less often than Frank, according to the app. While Amelia spent about an hour per day on the phone, Frank spent closer to four hours on his phone, which came as a shock to him. The children’s times varied but they often spent more than a couple of hours on the phone as well.
Minneapolis-based Dr. Kirsten Lind Seal sees phone usage come up lot among families. Lind Seal said many family members’ phone use has become problematic.
“If we hear more than once, ‘Do you have to be on your phone right now? Can you please put your phone down? Did you hear what I said?’ it may be a sign that it is negatively influencing our family relationships and our daily lives,” she said.
Lind Seal said actually paying attention to how much time one spends on the phone is a good first step in deciding when to put it down.
She asks parents to encourage more face-to-face communication for teens and young adults as they continue developing their social and emotional skills. “What we find is that we are really losing out on empathy—the ability to understand other people’s feelings and problems—when we spend a lot of time on our smartphones to communicate with other people,” she said.
28. How did the Vascellaros feel about the test results?
A. Satisfied. B. Doubtful. C. Uninterested. D. Surprised.
29. Why did Lind Seal mention the three questions in Paragraph 5?
A. To encourage people to live simple life.
B. To ask people if they use phones too much.
C. To explain the signs of problematic phone use.
D. To show the importance of close relationships.
30. What is the text mainly about?
A. Too much use of smartphones. B. The influence of apps on teens.
C. Children’s safety on the Internet. D. Problems among family members.
31. From which is the text probably taken?
A. A textbook. B. A journal C. A magazine D. A guidebook

Milo is a rescue dog, adopted (收养) by 20-year-old Makayla Swift. But the beagle (猎犬)is also a rescuer.
One morning in November 2021, Swift opened her front door in Silver Spring, Maryland, and Milo took off running. Milo ran to the house across the street. He seemed unsatisfied with this house, so he ran to the one next door, Swift on his tail. “He started scratching on the front door, ” Swift says, “I’m thinking, ‘Why is he literally trying to break into her house?’”
She felt uneasy. Not everyone wants a strange dog on their house. But as she tried to drag Milo away, she could hear a sound coming through an open upstairs window. It was a voice yelling “Help!”
Hours earlier, around 4 a. m., Sherry Starr had risen from her bed. “All of a sudden, standing there between the toilet and the tub, I slipped,” she says. "I went down—hard— on the tile(瓷砖) floor!" Starr is 85. She was stuck.
“I could not move at all,” says Starr, who was stuck between the toilet and the tub. Starr was scared. “I’m thinking: I’m just going to die here.” she says. Her best bet, she decided, was to listen for the letter carrier in the afternoon and scream at the top of her lungs. For the next few hours, Starr practiced yelling: “Help! Help! Help!”
“Her voice was very weak,” says Swift, “You had to be right at the front door to hear Starr yell for help.” Milo the beagle, apparently heard Starr the instant Swift opened her own front door. Swift called 911. Paramedics (医护人员) thought they’d have to remove the toilet to pull Starr, but they gave one last pull—and out she popped. Though bruised (擦伤), Starr declined a trip to the hospital.
Swift has known her share of distress. Two years ago, her mother died. She says Milo has helped her with her grief. “That dog is a blessing.” she says.
32. Why did Swift feel uneasy?
A. Scratching on a stranger’s door was impolite. B. She was following Milo.
C. Milo had broken into the house. D. She adopted Milo.
33. What did Sherry Starr hope for?
A. She rose from the bed at 5 a. m.
B. She could move slightly.
C. She wished the letter carrier to help her out.
D. Her voice was heard by the letter carrier.
34. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
A. Milo opened the front door himself.
B. The toilet was removed in order to pull Star.
C. Swift was no longer feeling sad about her mother’s death.
D. Milo heard Starr’s voice earlier than he got to her house.
35. What is the main idea of this passage?
A. All dogs are helpful to humans.
B. A rescue dog saves an old woman.
C. The elders should be taken good care of.
D. Waiting for help is the only thing we can do when in danger.

His socks never made it into the hamper(洗衣篮). And he only picked up his toys when Mom threatened to throw them away. Most days,Mom followed Arthur around the house and cleaned up after him. She brushed the crumbs(碎屑) into her hand and threw them away after meals. She picked up his socks and made sure they got washed, dried and folded neatly before going back in the drawer. She often picked up his toys when he left them to do something else.
One day, Mom asked Arthur to pick up his toy trains.“Not right now”Arthur said.He was reading a comic book. The trains had been on the living room floor since the morning.
“You know what, Arthur? I’m not going to ask you again. I’m done cleaning today.” And with that. Mom put her feet up on the sofa and picked up a book to read.
At dinner time,Arthur noticed that there was a big pile of crumbs at his place at the table. Mom’s seat was nice and clean. Arthur didn’t like the crumbs very much. After dinner, Arthur's feet felt cold. He went to his room and opened his drawer(抽屉),but the drawer was empty(空的). “Mom, where are my socks?” Arthur called.
“There weren't any socks in your hamper, so I didn't wash them,”Mom said. Arthur felt unhappy. Now his feet would be cold, unless he wanted to wear dirty socks from the floor. He decided to stay bare (裸露的)foot.
