Some people were inside a hotel during the terrible rainstorm earlier this week. A 21- year-old worker was regarded as their hero. He was a college student who worked part-time there.
Satchel Smith was supposed to work at the front desk in the hotel. After his father drove him for work on Wednesday, he expected to work for eight hours before going home later that evening.
The terrible storm spread through the area and flooded many of the roads and highways. Satchel was now the only worker who was serving the hotel with 90 guests trapped(陷入困境)inside and he faced the challenge bravely.
Angela Chandler was one of the guests staying at the hotel under Satchel’s care. She took a photo of Satchel and posted it on Facebook to praise him for his hard work.
“Satchel has been here all night,” She wrote. “His co-workers couldn’t show up until the storm stopped. He answers each of our questions patiently. He makes sure we have had a hot cup of coffee or tea, and helps serve us a hot breakfast. He has dealt with this work with kindness. The smile he wears brings us warmth and our worries gradually disappear.”
For 36 hours, Satchel was the hotel manager and cook. Luckily, he was not completely alone in his work. The guests pulled together to help him serve the meals and wash the dishes. Other guests even volunteered to help and bring clean water and food to the truck drivers trapped nearby.

One day last January, 15 of my students prepared to lock their smart phones in a box and stop all Internet use for the next two weeks. This marked the start of a course I taught. During the rest of the school year, I teach high school chemistry, but this mini-course gave my students and me a chance to study the role of technology in our lives.
Over the next few days, most students felt anxious. Without their phones, they weren’t sure what to do when there was nothing to do. That’s when it hit me: I long for(渴望)the kind of time alone with my thoughts that my students feared. I use these moments to replay a difficult conversation until I know where it went wrong, imagine myself living in another country, and consider how I will feel when my parents pass away. I look at a person sitting nearby and invent the story of her life.
As we closed in on the final days of the course, I noticed all the kids changed a lot. They were no longer anxious and began to talk about the beauty of time slowing down. They went for walks, created music, and played games with younger sisters and brothers. They experienced life in the moment.
On the last day, when I returned the phones, I expected the kids to turn on their phones immediately and go straight to social media. Instead, many of them left the classroom with screens still dark, saying they wanted to see how long they could wait.
I know the pull of smart phones and the Internet is strong, but I’m hoping the short break from social media has shown my students that they have a choice in what to do in their downtime, while they’re waiting in line for coffee or walking home. I hope they use the valuable chance to daydream.

Sometimes we fall in love with something at once and sometimes it takes long. The same is true with poems. If we’re lucky enough, we open a book and find a poem that attracts us at once. But usually we need to spend a little time or make a little effort to truly understand a poem. 36
Reading a poem repeatedly will deepen your understanding of it. 37
And sometimes you’re just not in the right mood the first time you read a poem, but later it touches your heart.
38 . Poets like to use unusual words. Instead of skipping over(略过;跳过)these words or trying to guess their meanings, look them up.
39 . Reading aloud will make the poem’s rhythm(节奏;韵律)clear. Besides, a poet’s reading is very helpful before we can understand the poem’s meanings from where the poet places emphasis(重音)or pauses.
After you finish reading a poem, take a few moments to think about what it is saying. Sometimes its meanings are better understood through repeated reading. 40 .
It is hard to say whether there’s a right or wrong way to read poems, but reading practices will enrich your experience, increase your enjoyment, and deepen your understanding of any poem.
    根据材料内容﹐从下面五个选项中选出能填人文中空缺处的最佳选项,使文章意思通顺,内容完整。

How to Make Our Summer Vacation More Meaningful
Life in our summer vacation is an important part of our daily life. How can we make our summer vacation more meaningful? Here are some of my suggestions.
First of all, summer vacation is a great time for family to get together. It’s good to help our parents do some housework. That can help understand each other better and show our love for them. Secondly, we should spend time developing our interests and hobbies in our summer vacation. For example, I would like to choose some books to read and communicate with others after reading. Thirdly, we can take part in volunteering activities, like visiting the old people’s home or doing some cleaning in public places. Last but not least, to make ourselves healthier, taking exercise is a good choice.
In short, let’s make good use of our time in summer vacation.
