一、阅读单选。
I was born on July 17th, 1995 in Atlanta, Georgia. My story started before that, in May of that year. My mother had a car accident and some people took her to the hospital at once. There the doctors told my mom that I was hurt and there was bleeding in my brain(大脑).
They said I would have strokes(中风). As my mother was still young, the doctors suggested that she should give me up. But my mother didn't want to do so. When I was finally born, the doctors found out that one side of my brain was weak and that there was water in the brain. I also suffered visual(视力的) problems.
After I was born, my parents looked after me day and night. Finally, I got much better. Now I can even see without wearing glasses.
School days passed normally for me and I never really had trouble with anything. I now have many great friends whom I love very much. This fall I will be attending Young Harris College to study English. I love writing. I have written one book already and now I am writing another. I was walking down the street the other day when I suddenly saw a small wallet lying on the ground. I picked it up and opened to see if I could find the owner’s name. There was nothing inside it except some money and an old photo of a woman and a young girl about twelve years old. The girl looked like the woman’s daughter. I put the photo back and took the wallet to the police station. There I gave it to a policeman. Before I left, the policeman took down my name and address so that the owner could write to me and thank me if they found it.
That evening I went for dinner with my aunt and uncle in their home. They also asked a young woman, so there were four people at table. Her face seemed familiar. Maybe I met her before, but where did I meet her? I could not remember. During the talk, the young woman said, “I lost my wallet in the afternoon.” At once I knew she was just the young girl in the photo though she was now much older. She was very surprised, of course, when I was able to tell her what her wallet was like.

We are living a fast life today. It seems that everything has to be fast; fast food, fast Internet, fast roads, fast trains. Every day we try to do everything quickly, but sometimes we also need to slow down and enjoy our lives. We are always busy every day. I have to work eight hours a day or more. When I get home, it is always over seven o’clock, but I really want to find a little time for my hobby—writing. I hardly ever write and work on weekends. Those are my days to try to relax myself. I sleep on the sofa during the day, drink some beer or go out for a picnic if the weather is nice.
What am I try to say is this: if you always put all your heart into your work and never take some time to slow down to enjoy your life, it will be away from you. You can be unhealthy both in mind and body if you don’t take time to relax. So this week, don’t make any plans. Just get up on Saturday morning when your body says it’s time to get up. My dad was a fisherman. He had his own boat, but it was hard to make a living on the sea. He would stay out until he caught enough to feed the family.
He was a big and strong man. When you got close to him, he smelled like the sea.
Sometimes he would drive me to school in his old truck. It was older than he was. You could hear it coming from blocks away. On the way, I would shrink down into the seat hoping to disappear. He would pull right up in front of the school. Then he would give me a big kiss on the cheek. It was making me feel uncomfortable!
One day I decided I was too old for a goodbye kiss. When we got to school, he had his usual big smile. He started to lean to me, but I put my hand up and said, “No, Dad.” It was the first time I had ever talked to him that way. “Dad, I’m too old for a goodbye kiss.”
My dad looked at me for the longest time, and his eyes started to tear up. I had never seen him cry. He turned and looked out. “You’re right,” he said. “You are a big boy ... a man.” It wasn’t long before my dad went to sea and never came back. It was the day when most of the boats stayed in, but not dad.
I wish that my dad would give me just one more kiss ... to feel his old face ... to smell the sea on him.
I wish I had been a man then. If I had been a man, I would never have told my dad I was too old for a goodbye kiss.

Science Night
It’s almost time for Science Night.
I need a partner. Who should I ask?
I have three friends who all want to help.
How can I choose just one for the task?
My best friend Jule is fun to be around.
But she’s as chatty as a bird.
When she start to talk-just watch out!
I can’t get in a single word.
Still, that might work for Science Night;
She’d show our project to the crowd.
Jule’s voice would boom out like a drum.
I wouldn’t mind if she were extra loud!
And then there’s Dan, who’s really shy
But wise as an owl-he’s so smart?
He’d help with the thinking for the job.
He wouldn’t talk, but he’d do his part.
But what about Shel, who’s good at art?
He paints and draws and sculpts so well.
Our project would look great no doubt!
I’m sure I should be asking Shel.
How can I choose just one from three?
I need them all! I’m feeling sick.
I’m as dizzy as a spinning top.
When trying to choose. I just can’t pick!
But wait-why not ask them all to help?
A group of four is better than one.
I’d love to work with all my friends.
In such a group, we’d have such fun!
The work could be shared by four of us.
Be me and Shel and Dan and Jule.
We’d fit together like puzzle pieces.
And take the grand prize in the school!

My grandfather did not live with us because he was a very busy man, helping the poor in a small town. But as the holidays drew near,he would take the train to visit his grandchildren for a few days during the winter vacation. My favorite part of the holiday was the trip my grandfather and I would make together every year on December 24. I love him for that.
Grandfather was the first one to own a radio in his town, a large box made of wood. He kept it in the Outer House, where he saw his patients and chatted with friends. My grandfather’s radio became the only way to learn the news of the Second World War.
He was also the first one to send a daughter(my mother)to college, an act that made the whole village surprised. For this reason, he was the person I could ask about anything. He knew
everything-----from the capital of France to how fish were able to breathe(呼吸)under the water.
This December 24, my grandfather andI walked together to Firpo’s. We discussed what to buy at Firpo’s as we walked. We ended up buying the fruitcake, the same as last year. Grandfather got me a cookie to eat on the way back. I asked grandfather a question that I 'd been thinking over for some time now. Why was Christmas called the Big day?
Grandfather was silent for a whole minute and when he finally spoke, his voice was slow. Christmas----the birthday of a very special soul, it was a day to grow big, he said.
“And how do you grow big in your heart, Grandfather?” I asked him.
He answered slowly and softly, as though I were the same age as he,”By doing something you think will make them happy. Something you don’t have to do, by putting their needs before yours at least once a day. It’s a good start for trying to live a big life.

Yesterday, Danny ate lunch at a restaurant with his family. Later that night, he had food poisoning(中毒). He wanted to know how it happened.
Danny learned about a few reasons(理由)for food poisoning(中毒).
The first reason is bacteria in the food. Bacteria live in a lot of food and they live in meat, eggs and seafood most often. If you cook the food in a right way, you can make the bacteria die in it.
Another way to get food poisoning is from parasites(寄生虫). They often live in meat, but could live on vegetables, too. If you don’t cook the food in a right way, these parasites may start living in your body.
The third way that you can get food poisoning is by eating the food with toxins(毒素)in it. Sometimes the food gets toxins naturally, and sometimes the toxins come from insect spray(喷雾杀虫剂). So you must wash the food carefully before you eat or cook it.
The last way that people get food poisoning is from allergens(过敏原). Some people are just allergic to some food, and they may feel very uncomfortable after eating it.
Danny decided he would choose food carefully and cook it in a right way before he ate it in the future. That was important. He never wanted to feel this way again.
