Before she passed away from cancer, A.J. Walters made her husband Sean and daughter Brittany promise her one thing: Sean would accompany Brittany to the homecoming game where she was in the running for homecoming queen. A.J. was a beloved administrative assistant at Brittany’s high school. It was important to her that her daughter go. Brittany and Sean agreed.

Days later, on the morning of Friday, September 24, A. J. died. Keeping their promise that very afternoon, emotional Brittany walked arm in arm with her father across the football field with the other candidates to wait for the outcome of the voting (投票).

Brittany wasn’t named homecoming queen that day; Nyla Covington was. But, like many in the close-knit community, Nyla had heard about A.J. In an unplanned gesture, moments after receiving the crown (皇冠), Nyla walked over to Brittany, removed the crown from her head, and placed it atop her friend’s. The two hugged, tearfully holding each other for support.

“She’d rather have her mom than a crown,” Nyla told CNN. By handing it to Brittany, “I was telling her that she was her mom’s queen, and that she was loved by many, especially me.”

“I felt so much love from her and I just felt so much love for her,” said Brittany, who showed Nyla the ultimate admiration, telling WDAM News, “I can see my mom through Nyla. They have the same caring giving spirit.”

Nyla was no less regal (帝王的) for lack of a crown, says Tyra Willamor, a friend of the Walters family. She told KTVU News, “There’s a saying that real queens fix each other’s crowns. But the truth is, real queens give up their crowns to let other queens shine.”

    4. What did A J. Walters ask her husband to do?

    A. Look after her daughter Brittany.

    B. Serve as an administrative assistant

    C. Vote for Brittany as the homecoming queen.

    D. Go to the homecoming game with their daughter.

    A. To give up her award. B. To share her happiness.

    C. To express her admiration. D. To show her sincere love.

    6. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?

    A. Brittany was the real queen.

    B. Brittany felt love from Nyla.

    C. Nyla was highly spoken of by others.

    D. Nyla was not regal for lack of a crown.

    7. Which of the following agrees with the author’s view?

    A. A friend in need is a friend indeed.

In 2020 Sarah A1 Amiri, now 35, was appointed chairwoman of the United Arab Emirates Space Agency (UAESA). She was shocked at the honor and the responsibilities that came with it, but she could not have been entirely surprised. Amiri has been fascinated with space since she was 12 years old. However, given that space exploration was still in the hands of just a few of the world’s largest nations, it seemed unlikely to a young Amiri that a country like the U.A.E. would reach space any time soon. So rather than anything directly space-related, Amiri studied computer programming in college. But by the time she graduated in 2009, the first green shoots of an Emirati space program had begun to grow so she applied to join UAESA and was hired at 22 as a software engineer.

The U.A.E. launched its first Earth observation satellite, Dubai SAT, in 2009, followed by Dubai SAT 2 in 2013. Then, in 2014, it set its goal to send a probe to Martian orbit by 2021. Amiri was named deputy project manager and science lead on the mission, which had the ambitious goal of mapping Mars’ entire atmosphere over a whole Martian year. The spacecraft Amiri’s team designed and built for the mission was named Hope that took seven months to reach the Red Planet. Waiting for news of the spacecraft’s arrival on February 9, 2021, was, says Amiri, “the toughest point.” At that time, she was standing outside the Burj Khalifa and celebrating with the crowds who had gathered to mark the moment.

The Hope mission was not just ambitious in terms of its scope (范围), but also in terms of gender (性别) representation. Amiri’s science team included 80% women, an unusual number in the field of space exploration. She has always been determined that gender would not in any way hold her back in her chosen field. “I grew up to be—and continue to be—deaf to the challenges related to gender,’’ she says.

    8. How did Amiri feel when learning about her appointment?

    A. Amazed. B. Worried. C. Confused. D. Delighted.

    9. What inspired Amiri to be a member of UAESA?

    A. Her passion for challenges.

    B. Her major in computer program.

    C. The mission of sending spacecraft to space.

    D. The development of Emirati space program.

    10. What does “the moment” underlined in Paragraph 2 mean?

    A. The U.A.E. launched Dubai SAT.

    B. Mars’ entire atmosphere was mapped.

    C. The U.A.E. spacecraft landed on Mars.

    D. Amiri was named deputy project manager.

    11. Which can be a suitable title for the text?

    A. A Hard Road to Success

    B. A Journey of Space Exploration

    C. The Woman Achieving Great Goals

    D. The Woman Taking the U.A.E. to Mars

    D

The human body gives off many gases. Now, researchers have come up with a system that uses earmuffs (耳罩) to seize gases pointing to serious diseases. Doctors could get the information as patients wear a set of headphones. Results could be ready within minutes, scientists say. Best of all: no needles!

“The ear is a good place to monitor” agrees Moamen Elmassry, a microbiologist at Princeton University. The ear’s skin is fairly thin, so gases don’t have to travel far to get out of the blood. Tiny amounts of the gases in the blood leave the body every time you exhale (呼气). Koji Toma, a biomedical engineer, and his team turned to the ears and selected earmuffs to collect these gases. They made two holes in the muff covering one ear. A tube (试管) slowly pumped air in one hole. Another tube pulled air out of the second hole and sent it to a sensor.

The researchers selected three men who had to avoid drinking alcohol for at least three days. Once in the lab, these men wore the earmuffs and sat for 10 minutes as the system recorded normal gas levels. Afterward, the men drunk a big dose of alcohol. 7 minutes later, the earmuff system sniffed out a rise in alcohol leaving the skin. Roughly 50 minutes after that, alcohol levels peaked at about 183 parts per billion in air. Levels continued falling after another 23 minutes until the test was over. Researchers found that they could measure changes in the amount of alcohol sent out from the skin of participants’ ears. It could work much like a Breathalyzer that police use to test people for driving drunk.

To measure other gases, they only need to change out the sensor. They hope their new system will find most of its use elsewhere. With the right sensor, they say, their system could detect diseases. For instance, high levels of acetone in the breath can signal diabetes or liver disease. Elmassry imagines another possible benefit. The new system could help doctors diagnose (诊断) and tell whether a child’s ear infections had been caused by bacteria or a virus. How? Each type of infection gives off different gases. That, in turn, could guide how doctors treat the disease.

    12. What’s the purpose of using earmuffs in the research?

    A. To keep warmth. B. To catch gases.

    C. To keep out dust. D. To protect the skin.

    13. Why did Toma’s team choose the ear to monitor?

    A. The ear is easy to observe.

    B. The ear is suitable to fix the muff.

    C. The ear’s skin is thin for gases to get out

    D. The ear’s infection can be quickly detected.

    14. How long did the whole test last?

    A. 90 minutes. B. 50 minutes.

    C. 23 minutes. D. 10 minutes.

    15. What can we expect of the new system in the future?

    A. It may be used to reduce drunk driving.

    B. It will be applied to curing most diseases.

    C. It will develop into a disease diagnostic tool.

    D. It can help to remove bad gases from the body.

The house was flooded by the fresh aroma (香味) as Jack’s mom took the cookies out of the oven (烤箱). Jack stood by the kitchen table watching as his mouth watered for the fresh cookies. ‘‘You’ll get some cookies after dinner, Jack. You just have to wait till then,” Mom said before cleaning up the kitchen and leaving the room for the hotel where she worked as a clerk in the front desk.

It had been quite some time before Mom made cookies two months ago. She was always busy working, with little time to accompany her kids. Jack knew that the right thing to do would be listen to his mom, but he felt very attracted by the cookies. So when Mom left the kitchen and walked out of the door, he removed the cover from the cookie box and thought, “Mom won’t know if I just take one.” Then he took a deep breath, picked up a cookie and snacked on it, enjoying every last bit.

“Maybe if I take just one more, Mom won’t find out,” he said to himself as he took another one. “Does it matter if I eat one more? OK, just one more. Just one more,” he repeated to himself and took yet another cookie from the box. Then he simply could not stop eating, and kept taking cookies one after another from the box till only one cookie was left. As he realized what he had done, he gasped in panic. “What shall I tell my mom?” Jack stayed in his room, thinking about how to escape this situation.

Soon it was dark. Mom returned home to have dinner with him and his sister Mabel, who just came back from their neighbour’s home. As everyone finished their food, Mom went to fetch the cookies, but to her surprise, there was only one cookie left in the box! “Oh, my God! Where are the cookies?” she asked.

    【答案】Dear Peter,

On behalf of the school English Club, I’m writing to invite you to be the judge of our English Speaking Contest themed Technology and Our Life.

Scheduled on January 12th in the school lecture hall, the contest aims to promote students’ passion for English learning. It’s required that the competitors should finish their speech within 5 minutes. Your presence and comments on their performances are highly expected.

I would appreciate it if you could accept my invitation. Looking forward to your early reply.

    Yours,

    Li Hua

    第二节(满分25)

    47题答案】

    【答案】Possible Version

Hearing Mom’s words, Jack was nervous with his face pale. “It must have been Mabel. I saw her around the kitchen,” Jack lied, blaming his little sister. Hearing this, Mabel was shocked, with her mouth open and eyes widening. She denied, but Mom didn’t scold them and sent them to bed instead. The rest of the night Jack felt regretful for what he had done, tossing and turning in bed, and finally he decided to tell Mom the truth and say sorry to Mabel.

So Jack gathered the courage to go to Mom’s bedroom. “Sorry, Mom. I ate the cookies, not Mabel,” he hung his head in shame. Mom hugged him, saying in a gentle voice, “I had known all along, but I wanted you to have the courage to tell the truth.” Jack then realized that he shouldn’t give in to greed or blame his mistake on others. “I’m proud that you came to me with the truth,” appreciated Mom. Only then did Jack learn that being honest and responsible wasn’t that hard after all.
