Music for Life
Learning music is important for the educational and personal development of young people!
Learning an instrument: how do pupils choose?
All our teachers are highly qualified and experienced musicians, and pupils can learn to play a wide range of instruments, from the keyboard to the drums(鼓). We have open days when new pupils who are unsure which instrument to choose can come to the centre. They are able to speak to teachers about which instrument might be best for them, and they can also see and hear classes in action.
Who is responsible for buying the instruments?
Parents usually have to provide instruments. But parents of beginners are advised not to buy an instrument until they are told that a place is available. They should also find out from the teacher the most suitable type of instrument to get.
When and where do lessons take place?
Lessons are available in many schools, usually during the day. If there is no lesson available for a particular instrument in a particular school, other arrangements can be made at one of our music centres for lessons on Saturday afternoons or weekday evenings.
How are pupils taught?
Pupils can learn in small groups, in classes or individually, depending on their needs. Small groups of three pupils have lessons that last thirty minutes. Class lessons last forty-five minutes and have at least ten pupils. Individual lessons are offered only to pupils who have some experience.
Starting young: when can pupils begin?
Children are never too young to become interested in music. We have special “Musical Youth” classes for children from the age of 3 to 8. These are designed to encourage young children to enjoy music through a variety of activities including singing, musical games, listening and movement. “Musical Youth” classes take place on Saturday mornings with groups of about 18 children. A parent or other adult must attend each session, and they are encouraged to sit with their children and help them with the activities.

Mary O’Connor and her husband Bobby Hughes had been in Letterkenny for a couple of days, when they decided they would spend the afternoon at Rathmullan beach.
Bobby is a diabetic (糖尿病患者) and needs to take insulin (胰岛素) regularly. On that morning, he had checked his blood sugar levels, which were fine. He ate breakfast without any difficulty. However, an unlucky incident happened. Mary said, “Ten minutes after we were there he just completely went down. It was just scary and it was so sudden. I think the really severe heat was a key factor, but it reflected how quickly things could change. ”
A few moments later, two women from Derry noticed that and rapidly came over. One called Sara who also was a similar patient recognized straight away what was going on. She said, “I had a bottle of glucose gel (葡萄糖凝胶) that I kept for emergencies and I was rubbing it onto Bobby’s gums. ”
Mary said, “Some young lifeguards were able to call an ambulance and another lady called Emma, who was a nurse, stopped by to help us as well. Eventually we got him into the ambulance and I started to shake from the shock of it all. A nice man, Liam McAteer, whose mum owns the pub in Rathmullan, offered to drive me to the hospital and even took me back again to get my car.” Mary said that the staff at the Letterkenny hospital were so brilliant in treating Bobby that he was able to be discharged later that day at 6: 30 pm.

The employees at Helwig Carbon Products in Milwaukee have their own company cafeteria on a site, a rarity it seems more and more these days. But if anyone wants to eat a doughnut (甜甜圈) , it’s going to cost twice as much as what they might pay for the sweet at the local grocery store. That’s because Helwig Carbon Products has a wellness program, and it is one of many local companies trying to show employees how to eat healthier.
“We’re really trying to persuade people to eat healthier,” said Cheryl Brah, human resources director at Helwig Carbon Products. “A pieceof fruit is 25 cents; a doughnut is $ 1.50—and we still have people who buy doughnuts. People complain—but we really try to put our efforts toward the middle-of-the-line people who might lean more toward the wellness side, eventually. ”
This effort isn’t just happening at Helwig Carbon. There has been a city-wide movement of 44 local companies who added or evolved their health and wellness programs to their company culture, and because of it Milwaukee is now nationally recognized for a large number of businesses with wellness programs.
It all started several years ago, when a program called Well City Milwaukee teamed up with 44 local businesses that collectively represent a workforce of 130,000 employees. Well City Milwaukee provided healthy practices guidelines for businesses. In exchange, it surveyed the employees to find out what their health needs and risks were and what activities they found interesting. Well City then set a very high bar for companies to meet a lot of expectations to be considered a top wellness program.
Companies needed a commitment from the CEO; to form a wellness team; to collect information from the employees in surveys and health assessments; to come up with an operating plan; to create a supportive environment; to self-evaluate their efforts; and finally, to choose their best approaches. That meant coming up with activities, better nutrition education, and motivational programs like getting people to quit smoking, getting people in for medical self-care and working on stress management.
8.Why does the company cafeteria charge much more for doughnuts at Helwig Carbon Products?
A.Because it upsets staff’s appetite for doughnuts .
B.Because the doughnuts are fine quality.
C.Because it is more convenient.
D.Because it earns more from the wellness program.
9.What does the underlined words in paragraph 2 refer to ?
A.People who are addicted to sweet food.
B.People who are middle-aged and have health problems.
C.People who are neutral about what to eat.
D.People who are used to cutting in line when buying food.
10.What does a top wellness program of a company mean according to Well City Milwaukee’s
requirements ?
A.Starting related activities based on their employees’ needs.
B.Motivating its employees to cooperate with each other.

Electronic sensors built into paper could be used in a range of ways from information storage to touch screens and more.
Electronic sensors built into cartons (纸盒) may make it easier to tell when it’s time to throw out rotten milk or orange juice. And that’s just the start. At least that’s the goal for researchers working on putting electronics into paper. They’re trying to figure out how to combine the flexibility, low-cost and recyclability of paper with the information-carrying ability of electronics.
Daniel Torbjork, a physics graduate student in Finland, has been working on the problem. He’s published a review of the field in the journal Advanced Materials.
Much research has been focused in this area. While most electronic applications require patterned conducting structures, conductive paper could be used in applications such as energy storage devices, sensors, electric heaters and others, according to Torbjork.
“You could even have some interactive functions in magazines,” Torbjork said, “You could put a simple game in a package. If you want a touch screen, press a button and then something happen. Sensors in paper could tell us when something has gone bad. ”
Additional applications, such as information storage and security paper, have been suggested for magnetic papers containing magnetite. In Massachusetts, researchers have figured out how to post a video of such a device put into a paper airplane.
German researchers have also put electronic chips in paper bank notes to defend counter-feiters (造伪币者). Paper is a good material but printing electronics also requires low-cost manufacturing. As many US and European paper makers lose market share to cheaper paper from
China, these big paper companies are looking for added value products. That’s where electronic paper devices could make a difference.
“The major obstacles are paper’s large surface roughness and chemical impurities.” Torbjork says. But others in the field think that electronic sensors in paper are still far from the consumer marketplace.
“I don’t think it’s going to happen.” said Roy Horgan. “You need a conductive surface. It could be 10 years out. What we are looking for are solutions that you can commercialize to-day.”
Solar Print is partnering with Italian automaker Fiat to develop a unique auto-glass with tiny photostatic cells(光电) that can capture electricity from the sun. In the meantime, using paper to conduct electricity is still a “blue-sky” project.
“I would love to see someone prove me wrong, because that means that it’s actually happening.” Horgan said. “If someone comes up with conductive paper, then that’s a very interesting technology.”
12.What are the goal of the researchers working on putting electronics into paper?
A.To cut the cost and impurity of paper.
B.To invent flexible conductive structure.
C.To combine the advantages of paper and electronics.
D.To help consume rotten milk or orange juice
13.What are the challenges for western paper makers to produce electronic paper devices?
A.Low-cost manufacturing.
B.Paper’s large surface roughness and chemical impurities.
C.Big consumer marketplace.
D.Better paper from China.
14.What does the author want to show about the conductive paper from Paragraphs 4 to 7 ?
A.To give example of practical uses.
B.To explain the theories.
C.To arouse readers’ curiosity.
D.To attract readers’ attention.
15.What is Roy Horgan’s attitude about this new technology?
A.He showed much interest in Solar Print industry.
B.He is not confident about the conductive paper.
C.He started a “blue-sky” project to study paper.
D.He has a burning desire to make a great profit.

How to Choose Your Purpose-Filled Career
When you think about choosing a career, you often do it in the following two ways.
Think about what you like to do. If you like writing or doing crafts, you might consider these things. This is not a bad way to go, of course, but you can’t always make money doing things you like (like video games or drinking beer). 16
Think about a well-paid job that you can do and doesn’t sound so bad. 17 Or maybe that’s out of your educational reach, so you choose office or retail worker. These are all great choices. But often they are not something you’re really passionate about. It’s kind of like just doing something because it’s there——not very inspired.
18 Try to do something to serve a community or make the world better. For example, taking care of children, because you really want to help children get a great start in life, or blossom into who they want to be or getting into government or social work to improve the conditions of the community you live in or becoming a scientist to help ease the environmental crisis or find a cure for a terrible disease. 19 And if you choose one of them for that purpose, you will serve in that work feeling a sense of purpose each day.
20 The point isn’t how you serve the world, but just serving the world in some way will help you feel filled with purpose. If you choose a purposeful and enjoyable job, you’re always further along than most people.
A.However, there’s another way that is perhaps better.
B.It’s essential not to concentrate on interests and good payment.
C.Each of these is just one of many possibilities filled with purpose.
D.Maybe a doctor, engineer or lawyer?
E.You are dreaming of a well-paid job which you like best.
F.And sometimes things you like are better as a hobby or side passion.
G.There are endless ways to do that.

In a small village, a little boy lived with his father and mother. He was the only son. The parents of the little boy were very depressed due to his bad temper. The boy used to get angry very soon and taunt others with his words. His bad temper made him use words that hurt others. He scolded kids, neighbours and even his friends due to anger. At the same time, he felt even more depressed and far too often flew into fury. His friends and neighbours avoided him, and his parents were really worried about him.
His mother and father advised him many times to control his anger and develop kindness. Unfortunately, all their attempts failed. Finally, the boy’s father came up with an idea.
One day, his father gave him a huge bag of nails. He asked his son to hammer one nail to the fence every time he became angry and lost his temper. The little boy found it amusing and accepted the task.
Every time he lost his temper, he ran to the fence and hammered a nail. His anger drove him to hammer nails on the fence 30 times on the first day! After the next few days, the number of nails hammered on the fence was reduced to half. However, the whole fence was all covered with nails soon. The little boy found it very difficult to hammer the nails and decided to control his temper.
Gradually, the number of nails hammered to the fence was reduced and the day arrived when no nail was hammered! The boy did not lose his temper at all that day. For the next several days, he did not lose his temper, and so did not hammer any nail. Meanwhile, the boy began to feel enjoyable to hang out with his pals. There was seemingly little trouble to annoy the parents.

47.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
答案:
Now, his father told him to remove the nails each time the boy controlled his anger. Several days passed and the boy was able to pull out most of the nails from the fence, However, there remained a few nails that he could not pull out. The boy told his father about it. The father appreciated him for his progress. Pointing to holes, he asked the boy what he could see. The boy responded that there were a lot of holes left by the nails that he had hammered into the fence.
The father looked into the eyes of the boy thoughtfully for a little while. He told the boy, “The nails were your bad temper and they were hammered on people. You can remove the nails but the holes in the fence will remain. The fence will never look the same. It has scars all over. Some nails cannot even be pulled out. You can stab a man with a knife, and say sorry later, but the wound will remain there forever. Your bad temper and angry words were like that! Words are more painful than physical abuse! Use words for good purposes. Use them to grow relationships. Use then to show the love and kindness in your heart!”
