Researchers at University f Califrnia, Berkley, led three small studies t explre genersity. In ne study, they expsed a grup f healthy adults t a night f 8 hurs f sleep and a night with n sleep. Researchers scanned the participants’ brains after each night. After a sleepless night, areas f the brain invlved in empathy and helping behavir were less active. In fact, when the study participants were sleepless at night, 78% f them demnstrated a reductin in the desire t help thers.
In the next study, researchers tracked 136 peple thrugh nline questinnaires and sleep diaries fr a few days. They wanted t see if nightly variatins in sleep affected their desire t help thers. They fund that, when sleep quality wrsened frm ne night t the next, there was a majr decrease in “helping chices” and vice versa.
The third study lked at hw sleep lss affected genersity n a larger scale. The researchers analyzed data frm ver 3 millin charitable dnatins made in the U.S.. They fcused n dnatins during the transitin t Daylight Saving Time(DST)in spring each year. During the spring time change, we lse an hur f sleep.
Interestingly, researchers fund a 10% drp in dnatins in regins that change their clcks. This drp wasn’t seen in regins that didn’t bserve the time change. It shwed that insufficient sleep triggered by the time change impacted dnatin behavir.
All these results suggest that insufficient sleep makes us less cmpassinate and helpful.
