Look at the center circles of Diagram A and Diagram B. Which of the center circles looks larger?
Take a first look and you probably think that the center circle in Diagram A is smaller than that in Diagram B. In fact, they are exactly the same size.
Then look at the picture on the left. What do you see? A vase? Or two faces? Does the picture change quickly from one to the other again and again? Maybe or maybe not, but you can never see them at the same time.
“ What's happening? Is something wrong with my eyes?” You may wonder at what you see. Don't worry. Here is how it goes:
When we look at things, our eyes send messages to our brains and then our brains interpret(解读)the information. However, sometimes our brains interpret the received information in a wrong way. It seems that our eyes are playing a joke on us. This often happens and we call it “visualillusion(视觉错误)”.
Movie makers often make use of illusions. They make the objects around actors much smaller or bigger than usual. This makes us believe that the actors are much larger or smaller than they usually are. Some movies just make use of illusions.

Tears filled my eyes as I stood in our room. I was washing new jeans and a shirt of my 16-year-old stepson, Brett. He drank a lot last night. The clothing was already covered with throw-ups.
I was very tired. The clothes were just one thing. He had already kicked a large hole in his bedroom wall. Many windows were broken because of his breaking in to steal money. Brett came to live with us when he was 12 years old. During those four years I had dealt with Brett as patiently as possible, but inside I was feeling sad.
Later, I gathered strength again and continued parenting Brett. Sill, Brett did not change his behavior.
When Brett was nearly 18, my husband and I decided to send Brett to a boarding school that has very good result with troubled teenagers.
At the graduation ceremony the graduates stood one by one to thank those who had helped them. Each graduate held a rose to give to the person who had meant the most to him or her.
Brett spoke lovingly to me, “You did so much. You were always there, no matter what happened. You always showed me such love. And I want you to know that I love you for it.”

五、任务型阅读(共10分)
Presleigh learned a tough love lesson today. I went to 3 different stores to get that LOL pencil box which is now in the dustbin there. When I surprised her with it this afternoon(thinking she would be excited), she stared at it and threw it into the dustbin and slammed the bedroom door. She yelled, “That's stupid, everyone in my class has one. I don't want it anymore!”
OK. So, by this time there was probably smoke coming out of my ears and I’m trying really hard not to completely lose it on this kid. I have worked so hard to completely make money on my own to make sure she always gets what she needs. I thought I had always taught her to be thankful to know how lucky she was but apparently, she needed a small wakeup call! So before completely going mad on my child, I check myself and say, “Okay, that’s fine, let me go and get the one you’re going to use.” Then I came back with her new pencil box, which is a simple ziploc bag. She lost her mind! Suddenly the LOL pencil box she just trashed was good enough and the ziploc bag was terrible. But it was too late for all that. I told her to get the LOL pencil box out of the dustbin and we would give it to somebody that knows to be thankful. For example, he or she can be somebody whose mommy and daddy don't have money for any school supplies or someone who may not even have a mommy or daddy. I explained to her she was not born with anything special and she didn’t realize how lucky she was.
So, for now she will be using a ziploc bag and give the nice box to another child that knows to be thankful. Maybe I overreact sometimes but I would have done anything to have all the things she does as a child. I truly believe changing your perception and just being thankful can turn around any situation in life.
56. Who did the writer buy the LOL pencil box for?
57. Where did Presleigh throw the LOL pencil box?
58. Which pencil box is better, the LOL pencil box or the ziploc bag?
59. What would they do with that LOL pencil box?
60. What did the writer want Presleigh to know?
