(2022·江苏·扬州中学教育集团树人学校一模)I learned to carry my master on my back and pull a coach. I learned to wear reins (缰绳) and a bit in my mouth. I did not like them but all the horses had to wear them.
My master had two horses. One of them was Ginger. She was not friendly. She bit and kicked people.
Ginger and I pulled a coach together. The coachman’s name was John. Ginger and I worked very hard. We became friends.
Ginger told me about her life when she was young. She told me, “My master was not kind to me. My reins and bit hurt me. My master did not care.”
Squire Gordon and his men felt sorry for Ginger. They were always kind to her. She stopped biting and kicking people. She became a happy horse.

“The bridge is broken in the middle, If you go on to it, you are all going to in the river.”
    “Thank God!” said the Squire.
Then John said, “Black Beauty saved our lives. He knew the bridge was dangerous.”

Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert are brother and sister. They live together at Green Gables on Prince Edward Island, Canada, in a little town called Avonlea. Last year they decided they want to adopt a boy from an orphanage (孤儿院) to help them on their farm. But instead of a boy, Anne Shirley, an eleven-year-old orphan girl, arrived at Avonlea station. Matthew and Marilla soon began to like Anne’s strange ways and affectionate (深情的)character so they decided to bring up her. Over the following year, Anne became best friends with a girl called Diana Barry, but then sworn (宣誓) enemies with a boy called Gilbert Blythe.
Here we meet up with Anne again for more adventures as she grows up.

“Can I visit Diana?” Anne asked. “Diana and I have invented a code (代码). We put a light in the window. Then we make flashes by passing paper in front of it. Five flashes means that something is important.”
“Okay,” Marilla agreed. “But be back in ten minutes.”
Ten minutes later, Anne rushed back into the kitchen.
“Marilla,” Anne said quickly. “Tomorrow is Diana’s birthday. She invited me to a concert, and then for a sleepover (过宿) at her house tomorrow night. Marilla, please let me go,” said Anne.
“No. Now go to bed. It is past eight.” Anne went slowly and sadly up to bed.
The next day, however, Matthew persuaded (劝说) Marilla to change her mind. Anne could go to her first concert. It was great. Anne enjoyed everything at the concert, until Gilbert Blythe recited a poem. Gilbert was her enemy. Last year he called her “carrots” in front of the whole school. And she still hated him.
The house was dark when Anne and Diana got to the Barrys’ house for the sleepover. The girls were sleeping in the spare room near the living room.

(2020·江苏·滨海县教师发展中心一模)For many tests and exams, you are tested on your abilities to communicate successfully. To speak English fluently (流利的), you need to think in English. If you don’t, your speech will be slow and it won’t sound natural. Here are some things you can do to practice thinking in English.
Look at objects around your home and school, and think of what they are called in English. Try to make a direct connection between the object and the English word.
When you are out in a public place, practice describing the things and people you see in your mind. For example, when you see somebody, you may think, “There is a man walking down the street. He’s wearing a suit. I think he is going to work.” Try to think in English first, not in your first language.
When you have to say something in English, think first and ask yourself, “What words and phrases do I know in English that I can use in this situation?” Try not to think in your first language and translate your ideas into English.
Try these tips and you’ll soon find that you are thinking in English.

(2022·江苏无锡·一模)Just the other day, I was in a bookshop and found a book named How to make friends with foreigners. As a Canadian living in China for a year, I was curious to see what kind of advice a Chinese writer giving on this matter.
One piece of advice really caught my attention and, I must say, made me feel quite angry. In the writer’s opinion, foreigners are an “opportunity (机会)” to improve your oral English; whenever you see a foreigner, American or English, you should practise speaking English with him or her. If the foreigner doesn’t want to answer your questions, then he or she is a rude person who you wouldn’t want to spend time with anyway. I think this advice is not only incorrect, but also may harm the relationship between Chinese and foreigners in China.
Like most other “Lao Wai” living in China, I know how lonely one can sometimes feel living in a culture different from our own familiar (熟悉的) ways. However, I simply accept as part of being here. So far my time in China has been rewarding. I have improved my Chinese language skills, learned about one of the fastest developing countries in the world today and made some very close Chinese friends.
However, I have also met many Chinese people who consider me only as an “opportunity” to improve their oral English. I have had people following me from town to my flat to trouble me to teach them English. I have had complete strangers throwing articles or speeches in my face, insisting that I help them with the English translation. I have had people asking me non-stop questions for half an hour at the weekly English Corner ...
Friendship for a lot of foreigners is about spending time with someone whose company (陪伴) they really enjoy. So if there is any advice to give on making and keeping friendships with foreigners, I would say that it is this: Treat foreigners as people, not opportunities. Expect to make friendships step by step, over a period of time, not in a rush. ________ If your only reason for becoming friends with a foreigner is to improve your English, then you will probably find that you don’t have a foreign friend for long.
18.Why is the writer of the passage interested in the book How to make friends with foreigners?
A.Because he wants to have some more close Chinese friends.
B.Because he has greatly improved his Chinese language skills.
C.Because no Chinese people would like to make friends with him.
D.Because he wants to know about the Chinese writer’s advice on this topic.
19.According to the writer of the book “How to make friends with foreigners”, ________.
A.his advice may make foreigners angry
B.it is rude of you to ask a foreigner questions
C.you should choose a good foreigner to practise English with
D.don’t waste time on a foreigner who doesn’t answer your questions
20.In the fourth paragraph, the writer uses “I have had …” three times, because ________.
A.he had no better sentences to express his ideas
B.he wanted to show how he hated to make friends with Chinese
C.he wanted to show how he hated to be treated as an “opportunity”
D.he met Chinese who wanted to make friends with him only three times
21.Which sentence may be the best to fill in the “________” in the last paragraph?
A.True friendships stand (经得起) the test of time.
B.Learn about different cultures to make real friends.
C.Friends are about opportunities or personal advantages.
D.There’s real friendship between people from different countries.

    hoverboard
If you’re looking to buy a gift for your children, why not choose something popular and get the best hoverboard?
    What is a Hoverboard?
A hoverboard is a two-wheeled personal transportation device (设备). It’s electrical and became highly popular in 2015 because of a popular 1980’s movie. Usually, this self-balancing device operates like a powered skateboard. _________
The device may have many designs, but the mechanism itself is simple. Basically, a standard hoverboard includes:
●Battery: stores the electrical power. Almost all hoverboards use a high-watt lithium-ion battery(高瓦锂电池).
●Gyroscope (one for each wheel): allows riders to tilt (倾斜) the hoverboard while keeping balance and changing their direction.
●Motor (one in each wheel): provides the power to the wheels to keep the rider balanced and upright.
●Logic board: uses as the hoverboard brain. It deals with data-your speed, tilt, etc.-and sends information to the motors. This unit controls the power of the board so riders can change their speed.
All the above work together to control the power and tilt of the hoverboards so the rider is balanced, upright and moving at a suitable speed.
Where is a hoverboard legal (合法)?
Although hoverboards are wildly popular, they are still not “street﹣legal”. At present, some places don’t allow anyone under 16 to use these devices, like campus buildings, parks, shopping malls and subway stations. Some places have also put speed limits on the devices and set a limit to their use to bike paths. However, you are free to enjoy in open areas, including your yard.
22.Which of the following is the most suitable title for _________?

    A.on campus B.in parks
C.on bike paths D.in shopping malls
24.What is the main purpose of this passage?
    A.To judge a gift’s quality.
B.To introduce functions of the latest hoverboards.
    C.To compare new hoverboard models.
    D.To recommend a gift choice.
(2022·江苏常州·一模)Violence (暴力) at schools has been widely reported in recent years. Hitting, slapping (打耳光) and burning others with cigarettes-the violence among teenagers has drawn public and government attention. On Nov. 11, the government published a guideline (指导意见) on dealing with school violence.
The guideline stressed that students with serious behaviour problems should be taken to special schools. Or, in more serious cases, they may take criminal responsibility (刑事责任) and be sent to prison.
China has long been considered as too soft on teen offenders (犯事者), according to the People website. Criminal responsibility begins at the age of 14. Offenders under the age of 16 do not face serious punishment unless they do eight types of “serious” crimes such as murder.
This might partly explain why junior middle school students are the most common offenders in school violence cases. It’s reported that they take up 33.96 percent of the total while high school students take up 22.64 percent.
“What also shocked us is how cruel (残忍的) some young offenders can be,” said Shi Weizhong.
In school violence cases in Beijing during the last five years, 14 percent of the offenders not only beat others, but also insulted (侮辱) them. They slapped others, made them kneel down (下跪), and in some cases took off other people’s clothes.
“The common tolerant (容忍的) attitude toward violence should be changed,” wrote Jiaxing Daily. “When teenagers do something wrong, we should tolerate and help them when necessary. But all of this has a limit.”
    25.What is the guideline about?
A.How to deal with school violence. B.How students improve in studies.
C.How students get along with each other. D.How to make students behave well.
    26.Who should be criminally responsible?
    A.An 11-year-old. B.A 12-year-old.
    C.A 13-year-old. D.A 14-year-old.
27.Junior middle school students are the most common offenders in school violence cases possibly because ________.
A.there are not many special schools in China
B.China has been too soft on teen offenders
C.teachers in junior middle schools are not strict with them
D.they know less on laws than high school students do
(2022·江苏常州·一模) ① . The beginnings of life provide scientists with some of the most difficult questions of modern science. Our knowledge of the development of cells, from which all forms of life are made, is not complete because we do not understand very well the conditions on our planet four billion years ago. Why and how did cells first appear? Was this very probable to happen under the conditions then? Might this happen in other places in the universe(宇宙)?
② . A group of scientists at University College London are trying to answer these questions. They started by studying the ways in which the first cells on the Earth might have been formed. Next they will use a powerful new telescope(望远镜) to look at places far away in the universe. The scientists hope that the results will improve our understanding of the development of life on the Earth and help us to find similar conditions for life development on other planets.
③ . Dr Nick Lane, who is in charge of(负责) the University College London team, has suggested that 4 billion years ago warm water springs(泉) on the floor of the Earth’s ocean might have helped to create life. Each spring consists of tiny connected holes that water passes through. The team has created models of these springs with these holes in their lab. They have found that they encourage chemical reactions(反应) between hydrogen(氢) in the liquids(液体) that come out of them and the carbon dioxide(二氧化碳) in the sea water.
④ . These building blocks are not living themselves, but when there are enough of them joined together in the right way, they can make living things. Water in the system of springs moves the building blocks around until there are a lot of them in a small area. Things that look very much like real living cells can be made in this way.
28.About ________ years ago, different forms of life first appeared on the Earth according to the passage.
    A.forty million B.four billion C.five million D.ten billion
29.The scientists search for ________ at places far away in the universe.
A.the same cells found on the Earth B.suitable places for human to live
C.new forms of life unknown on the Earth D.similar conditions for life development
30.What does the underlined phrase “consists of” mean in English?
A.is made up of B.is proud of C.is satisfied with D.is famous for
31.It is better to put “These chemical reactions can create the ‘building blocks’ of life.” in ________.
    A.① B.② C.③ D.④

(2022·江苏徐州·一模)Like all the planets in our solar system, Earth and Mars go around the sun. But Earth is closer to the sun, and therefore revolves along its orbit(轨道) quickly. Earth makes two trips around the Sun in about the same amount of time that Mars takes to make one trip. So sometimes the two planets are on the opposite sides of the Sun, very far apart, and other times, Earth catches up with its neighbor and passes relatively close to it.
Since Mars and the Sun appear on opposite sides of the sky, we say that Mars is in “opposition”. Mars oppositions happen about every 26 months. Every 15 or 17 years, opposition occurs within a few weeks of Mars’ perihelion(近日点).
An opposition can occur anywhere along Mars’ orbit. When it happens while the red planet is closest to the sun (called “perihelic opposition”), Mars is particularly close to Earth. If Earth and Mars both had perfectly stable orbits, then each perihelic opposition would bring the two planets as close as they could be. So, with all these added factors, some bring us closer together than others. The 2003 opposition was the closest approach in almost 60,000 years!
Mars’ orbit is more elliptical(椭圆的) than Earth’s, so the difference between perihelion and aphelion(远日点) is greater, Mars’ orbit has been getting more and more elongated, carrying the planet even nearer to the Sun at perihelion and even farther away at aphelion. So future perihelic oppositions will bring Earth and Mars even closer. Our 2003 record will stand until August 28, 2287!
    44.Mars ________.
A.isn’t one of the planets in our solar system
B.is farther from the sun than the earth
    C.never meets Earth close
D.and Earth have the same orbit around the sun
45.The time Mars takes to go around the sun is ________ that Earth needs.
A.as long as B.not so long as
C.as about two times long as D.as about three times long as
46.Which of the following statements is not right?
A.When Mars is in “opposition”, Mars and the sun are opposite in the sky.
B.Mars oppositions happen about every 15 or 17 years.

    Chapter 1   Four sisters
“Christmas won’t be Christmas without any presents,” grumbled (嘀咕) Jo, lying on the rug (地毯).
“It’s so awful to be poor!” agreed Meg, looking down at her old dress.
“It’s not right for some girls to have plenty of pretty things, and others to have nothing at all,” added little Amy, with a sad sniff (轻哼).
“We’ve got father and mother, and each other,” said Beth gently.
The four young faces on which the firelight shone brightened at the cheerful words, but darkened again as Jo said sadly, “We haven’t got father, and shall not have him for a long time.” She didn’t say “perhaps never,” but each silently added it, thinking of father far away at the war in the South.
Nobody spoke for a minute; then Meg said, “Mother advised not having any presents this Christmas because it is going to be a hard winter for everyone; and she thinks we shouldn’t spend money for pleasure when our men are suffering (受难) in the army. We can’t do much, but we can make our little effort. But I am afraid I don’t.” Meg shook her head thinking regretfully of all the pretty things she wanted.
“But I don’t think the little we should spend would do any good,” said Jo. “We’ve each got a dollar, and that won’t help the army much. I agree not to expect anything from mother or you. Let’s each buy ourselves what we want, and have a little fun. We work hard to earn it.”
“I do, teaching those tiresome children nearly all day when I really want to enjoy myself at home,” complained Meg.
“You don’t have half such a hard time as I do,” said Jo. “How would you like to be shut up for hours with a nervous, fussy old lady, who is never happy, and worries you till you’re ready to fly out of the window or cry?”
“It’s naughty to fret; but I do think washing dishes and keeping things tidy is the worst work in the world. It makes me cross; and my hands get too stiff to practice my music at all,” Beth looked at her rough hands with a sigh that anyone could hear.

China’s Double 11 online shopping festival is now getting greener. It has become a test field where some companies are trying to make a difference in lower carbon emission (碳排放).
In 2021, Tmall gave out 100 million yuan worth of shopping vouchers (代⾦券 ). The company encouraged people to buy green products with the vouchers. JD.com also joined in the activity. There were more than 150 million green products at the shopping festival. Besides, JD.com said it would choose cleaner transportation to make the world greener.
ZTO Express also took some action to achieve the goal last year. It handed out more than 11 million recyclable bags, taking the place of about 1.l6 billion disposable (⼀次性的) bags. It was helpful in saving our environment. At the same time, Cainiao gave out 7.5 million eggs to people who took part in the box recycling activity. On the one hand, the old bags can be recycled and on the other hand, customers can get something useful in their daily lives.
There are also signs that customers are becoming “greener” in their shopping habits. For example, most people only buy things they really need instead of the things they already have. “During the Double 11, I bought a coffee maker that is much cheaper than on normal days. The activity of getting new ones with old products can help us avoid wasting money,” said Bi Xin, a customer in Shenzhen.

(2022·江苏·宜兴市树人中学一模)It was last January, when I’d just finished a charity and was on the train back home, that I put down my phone and started writing thank-you notes to people who had helped.
When I got off the train, I felt amazingly good. The next day, I wrote more thank-you notes and the same feeling of happiness hit me again. I suddenly had the idea: Why not keep on doing this for every day of the year?
To keep on task, I decided to pick out a different theme for each month. January was charity.
February would be 2 , I decided. And I thought of a number of names right away: the owner of our local bookstore, who let me and my little son in before the store opened and offered to play his favorite songs; our babysitter, who dropped off a bag of old board games for our kids to play; …
While writing the notes, I realized how often I had spent my time on the phone moving from app to app, appreciating (欣赏) other people’s lives. Writing thank-you notes allowed me the time to do something different, paying more attention to my own life.
In the following months, I wrote to my friends, doctors, teachers and parenting role models. In July, my “food” month, I wrote to Julie, who used to cook at my favorite restaurant. It went like this:
    Dear Julie,
I’ve been finding myself missing you lately. Thank you for hosting and cooking beautiful and thoughtful food. Jake and I will never forget when you sent out biscuits shaped into the number VI for our sixth anniversary ( 周年纪念日). We talk about it every year.
    Thank you. We miss you.
    Love,
    Gina
I was happy to receive a note back from her. Julie replied, “I don’t think I’ve ever received such a touching letter before. I’m going through a hard time right now, and this helps.”
On December 31, I wrote my last card — to Jake, my husband, and our two kids. And I took a picture of us, so I could remember the feeling welling up inside me. Gratitude.
66.How did Julie most probably feel after reading the note from Gina?
A.Shy and surprised. B.Pleased and relaxed.
C.Nervous and excited. D.Moved and encouraged.
67.Which is the most suitable word for 2 ?
    A.friends B.relatives C.neighbours D.strangers
68.What did Gina get by doing her task according to the passage?
A.Many thanks from her neighbors. B.More time to appreciate her own life.
C.More help from people around her. D.Happy moments to be with her friends.
(2022·江苏·徐州市树人初级中学一模)There are over 800 boarding (寄宿) schools in the UK with students from home and foreign countries. Boarding schools started hundreds of years ago in the country. But the earliest boarding schools were set up for white, rich boys only. Now both boys and girls can go to boarding schools from the age of 7 to 18.
    What to do
In the UK, boarding schools have three terms in a school year, with about 13 weeks in each term. Students study and live together. They can’t go outside if they are not allowed to. In some schools, each student has his or her subject plan. Besides the usual classrooms and laboratories, the boarding schools have lots of other facilities for their students, including music rooms, boats, swimming pools, cinemas and theatres. Most boarding schools have a “light out” time. So when it’s time to go to bed, all the lights in the bedrooms are turned off. There are house-masters to take care of students all the time, especially after school hours.
    What to wear
Nearly all students at boarding schools wear a school uniform. Boys usually wear a shirt and a tie, and girls wear a white blouse, sometimes also a tie and a skirt. As students get older, the rules become less strict.

In the UK, boarding schools provide students with delicious food. They can choose to have a full English breakfast or simply bread. They can also choose between a meal with no meat and another meal at lunch and dinner. And there is always self-service for salad (沙拉), other dishes and a dessert. Students can also make themselves something to eat at any time in a kitchen, or drink tea or have a snack between meals.

(2022·江苏省锡山高级中学实验学校一模)Education appears to protect older adults especially women, against memory loss, according to a study by researchers Georgetown University Medical Centre.
The study tested declarative memory (陈述性记忆) in 704 older adults (58-98 years of age). Declarative memory refers to our ability to remember events, facts and words, such as where you put your keys or the name of that new neighbour. The researchers found that their memory performance became worse with aging. However, more years of early-life education countered these losses, especially in women.
For example, the declarative memory abilities of an 80-year-old woman with a bachelor’s degree (学士学位) would be as good as those of a 60-year-old woman with a high school education. So, four extra years of education make up for the memory losses from 20 years of aging.
“Simply said, learning brings about learning,” says the study’s senior researcher, Michael Ullman. “Since learning new information in declarative memory is easier if it is connected with knowledge we already have, more knowledge from more education should result in better memory abilities, even years later.” adds the study’s lead author, Jana Reifegerste.
“Evidence suggests that girls often have better declarative memory than boys, so education may lead to greater knowledge gains in girls,” says Ullman. “Education may bring advantages to memory abilities in women, even years later in old age.”
“These findings may be important, especially considering the rapidly aging population,” Reifegerste says. “The results argue for further efforts to increase chances of receiving education.”
“Education has also been found to slow down the beginning of Alzheimer’s disease,” Ullman says. “We believe that our findings may explain why this happens.”
73.The underlined “counter” in Paragraph 2 probably means ________.
    A.cancel B.change C.produce D.reduce
74.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
    A.New information. B.Declarative memory.
    C.More education. D.Better memory ability.
75.The research findings may help ________.
A.slow down the process of aging B.push for the development of education
C.make progress in the study of Alzheimer disease
D.fight for the equal rights of women’s education
76.The passage mainly talks about that ________.
A.declarative memory abilities fail with aging
B.women should try to get a bachelor’s degree
C.learning often helps improve old adults’ memory
D.early-life education helps prevent memory loss in old age
