    阅读下列短文,从每题所给的ABCD四个选项中选出最佳选项。

    A

Countries around the world ring in the new year with unique folkways (风俗习惯), often carried out at the strike of midnight. We rounded up ways to bring international New Year's Eve experiences to you.

    Japan: Eat toshikoshi soba.

Shiwasu is the end-of-the-year period in Japan, filled by many traditions like traveling to see family and thoroughly cleaning your home. To celebrate New Year's Eve, people eat toshikoshi soba, which can symbolize having a long and lucky life along with a clean break from the year.

    Spain: Eat 12 grapes.

The tradition of eating grapes for good luck began in Spain, but it is now practised around the world. When the clock starts ringing at midnight, eat one grape with each ring. It's even luckier if you're wearing special New Year's Eve underwear while eating your

grapes. A pair of red underwear can bring you a new year of love, while yellow may bring

    joy and good luck.

    Denmark: Jump off a chair.

In Denmark, one does not simply let the new year happen. You go on the offense (讨厌的东西) and jump into it. Just before midnight, stop what you're doing and get on a chair to do the jump like a Dane would. Should you forget to jump, it's said that you'll bring bad luck for the following year, so please, we are begging you-do not forget to jump.

Russia: Burn, then drink, your wishes.

After a year of unrealized dreams and plans, set your sights on a fresh start with this

Russian tradition. Before midnight, write down your wishes for 2023 on a piece of paper,

then light the paper on fire. Once it's stopped burning, sprinkle () the wish-filled ashes

into a glass of wine and drink up after the clock strikes midnight.

    21. What do the four traditions have in common?

    A. They all last for the whole night.

    B. Each is connected to a certain food.

    C. They are to celebrate families' reunion.

    D. They represent wishes for the new year.

    22. Which of the following has spread to other countries?

    A. Eating toshikoshi soba.

    B. Eating 12 grapes.

    C. Jumping off a chair.

    D. Burning and drinking your wishes.

    23. What's the purpose of the passage?

    A. To compare four different New Year's Eve traditions.

    B. To reveal the origins of four New Year's Eve traditions.

    C. To introduce four New Year's Eve traditions to try at home.

    D. To describe the popularity of four New Year's Eve traditions.

    B

The match was nearly over and I was almost on my last legs, when I saw a chance. I picked the ball up from Sally and headed for the German penalty area (罚球区).

"Jess!" I could hear Jules shouting as she ran alongside me. "Pass!"

I looked up and hit the ball forward into space. Jules ran on to it, picked it up and hit the ball into the net. It was just as good as Beckham's last-minute goal against Greece!

Two minutes later, the referee (裁判) blew the whistle for full-time. A draw.

"Penalties," Jules said, with a wide smile on her face.

Although it wasn't usual to finish a friendly with penalties, both sides had decided that it would be a nice idea. Joe came on to the pitch (球场) to give us a quick pep talk. Maybe he wouldn't choose me.

"OK, Jules, you go first," Joe said. "Then Mel, Tina, Hannah and-Jess." I tried not to

look relieved that I was last. With any luck I wouldn't have to take my turn, if the match was decided before that.

The Germans went first and scored. So did Jules. The Germans scored again. So did

Mel. After a third German goal, Tina was looking nervous, but she was lucky because her

shot went in off the post.

My stomach was turning over and over as Hannah stepped up to take our fourth penalty. If Hannah scored, it would be all down to the last German penalty-taker-and me.

Hannah rolled the ball smoothly into the left-hand corner of the net. I tried to take deep

breaths to calm myself down. If the next German player scored, I'd have to take my turn. I closed my eyes, willing her to fail.

A loud roar around the stadium told me that she'd scored. The referee signaled me to come over and with heavy steps I walked over to place the ball on the spot. I was really tired and my legs felt like they were made of lead. Behind me I could hear the girls yelling encouragement.

I made a superhuman effort and ran towards the ball, but even as I hit it, I knew it wasn't right. I groaned as the ball hit the crossbar and bounced away into the crowd.

    24. Why was Jess's kick compared to the one of Beckham's?

    A. They were both penalty kicks.

    B. They both ensured victory of the match.

    C. They were both the only goal scored in the match.

    D. They were both scored in the last minute of the match.

    25. Why was Jess relieved learning that she was the last to take the penalty?

    A. She had confidence in herself.

    B. They already had the game in their hands.

    C. She might not be the one to decide the game.

    D. The Germans were not good at penalty kicks.

    26. How many rounds of penalty did they take in all?

    A. Four.    B.Five.     C.Six.   D. Seven.

    27. How did Jess feel when she was about to take her penalty?

    A. Exhausted and unconfident.

    B. Relieved and delighted.

    C. Relieved but disappointed.

    D. Exhausted but excited.

    C

There's no doubt that one of the greatest human achievements is the exploration of the space. Ever since astronaut Yuri Gagarin became the first person to be sent into the orbit around the moon in 1961, scientists have been pushing the boundaries further and further. But until now the exploration into the unknown has been dominated (主导) by men.

Of course, in the past, women were also included in the space projects and played an active role on the ground and behind the scenes. For example, they worked as seamstresses (女裁缝师) sewing vital spaceflight components. In fact, many of NASA's key works would never have been possible without them. Recently Hollywood produced a movie called Hidden Figures to focus on a group of American female mathematicians, especially the black women, who helped NASA send the first American into space. But this was not women's only contribution. Back in 1963, Soviet astronaut Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman to

be sent into space. However, after that, space flight programs were slow to employ women. In the USA, NASA didn't accept applications from women to become astronauts until 1978.

But attitudes have changed and leading officials at NASA say that the first person to set foot on Mars should be a woman. The space agency aims to have a sex-balanced workforce but can only achieve that if equal numbers of men and women are trained for science and technology jobs. As Allison McIntryre told the BBC, "My director is a woman. We have female astronauts. We haven't put a woman on the moon yet. And I think that perhaps the first person to step on Mars should be a woman."

    28. What did Yuri Gagarin do in 1961?

    A. He landed on the moon in success.

    B. He discovered many new boundaries.

    C. He led scientists to explore the moon.

    D. He made the first journey into the space.

    29. Why does the author mention the film Hidden Figures?

    A. To prove women can do as well as men in NASA' projects.

    B. To stress that black people have won equal rights in NASA.

    C. To show women are the true heroes of NASA's first launch.

    D. To present women's contributions to NASA's space programs.

    30. What is Allison McIntryre's attitude toward women astronauts?

    A. Uncaring.   B. Disapproving.  C. Supportive.  D. Disappointed.

    31. What is the best title for the text?

A Will the First Person to Step on Mars Be a Woman?

    B. Great Achievements Have Been Made in Space Exploration?

    C. Why Men Played an Important Role in Exploring the Unknown?

    D. Men and Women Have Made Equal Contributions to NASA's Projects?

    D

Getting a fright from a dream is very normal, but our brains don't have a secret plan to shock us with nightmares (噩梦).

In times gone by, many people believed that dreams were a window to another world. People lived two inseparable lives: one in a waking world and the other in a dream world. They believed the dream world contained a mixture of the past and the future, and it might help people find purposes with their lives. Others saw them as a sign from the gods. No wonder some people found dreams frightening!

When scientists first studied dreams around 200 years ago, they thought dreams were a particular type of story that brains told themselves. Scientists thought it was a special language where ideas and feelings were explained using symbols and signs.

Around 100 years ago, French scientists began to study sleep by measuring the electrical activity in the brain. They found that there are two main types of sleep-rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and non-REM sleep. During REM sleep, your brain is active and the eyes roll quickly behind your eyelids. REM sleep is when we are most likely to dream. Non-REM sleep, on the other hand, is often called deep sleep. In this type, people sleep soundly and don't typically report dreaming.

Over the past 50 years, some scientists have started to think that dreaming was a time for the brain to decide what to keep and what to throw away each day. In a sense, it's like cleaning your room.

Lots of people wonder why dreams are frightening. The truth is that we don't know for sure. What we do know is that all people dream, and all people think dreams can be strange, frightening and puzzling at times. We share the ability to dream with all warm-blooded animals, so it probably has an important function in keeping us healthy.

    32. What can be learned from Paragraph 2?

    A. People were sometimes frightened of dreams.

    B. People tended to look outside through dreams.

    C. People mixed up the past and future in dreams.

    D. People succeeded in finding life goals in dreams.

    33. By measuring the electrical activity in the brain, French scientists find that _______________.

    A. people are fully awake during REM sleep.

    B. people don't have dreams during deep sleep.

    C. people usually sleep better during deep sleep.

    D. people are unlikely to dream during REM sleep.

    34. Which of the following do people agree on?

    A. It may be of importance to have dreams.

    B. Dreams are too strange to make sense of.

    C. There's no reason for frightening dreams.

    D. Both people and animals are able to dream.

    35. What does the text mainly tell us?

    A. Brains work hard during sleep.

    B. Brains contain various dreams.

    C. Dreams are nothing to worry about.

    D. Dreams have a bad effect on sleep.

    第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

    阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

How to Reduce Gift Wrap Waste

Wrapping paper may have "paper" in its name, but that doesn't automatically mean it can be recycled. __36__ Try these suggestions for cutting down the amount of wrapping paper you throw away.

Reuse what you have. __37__ It's estimated that the U.S. produces 4.6 million pounds of wrapping paper annually, and 2.3 million pounds of that stays in people's homes, awaiting reuse.

Use different materials. __38__ Select basic brown thick paper that can be made up with a bow, ribbons, leaves, pinecones or markers. Repurpose newspapers, old posters and children's school artworks as wrapping paper. There are plenty of other eco-friendly

alternatives to wrapping paper that are just delightful and celebratory.

__39__ Use baskets, fabric, gift boxes or bags, tea towels, and more to contain and display your presents. Learn the Japanese art of wrapping, using beautiful knots (绳结) to

fasten colorful, reusable fabrics in attractive ways. This way, you'll have no wrapping paper waste to deal with.

Ask for better paper. Shops store what customers want, and recyclability should be a top priority, so let that be known when you're out shopping. As explained by Simon Ellin, CEO of the Recycling Association, a trade body that represents about 90 waste management companies and paper merchants in the United Kingdom, "It's a campaign we've been on all year - do you really need to design a non-paper wrapping paper? Make paper with recycling in mind!" __40__

    A. Try zero waste.

    B. Shop with that in mind, too.

    C. You don't have to choose shining paper to decorate a present.

    D. In fact, many types of wrapping paper cannot due to their materials.

    E. When wrapping paper is rather thin, it has few good quality fibers for recycling.

    F. Wrapping paper can be used many times if care is taken to unwrap it without tearing.

    G. Having a mix of recyclable and non-recyclable papers is a real problem for companies.
