Suddenly Irene stepped in a hole, fell over and her foot got injured. “Keep quiet!” She blamed it on the wind. “You've done enough damage already.”The wind swallowed up her words. She sat in the snow in great pain, afraid that she wouldn't be able to go on. For a short second, Irene wondered if she should follow the wind’s warning. But it was her dear mother’s hard work, all those days of measuring, cutting, pinning, stitching ... And the poor duchess! She must be waiting for the gown anxiously. She managed to get to her feet and start moving again.
Eventually she was at the door of the duchess’s house. She knocked the door and was welcomed by cheering servants and the anxious duchess. They couldn’t believe she had come in such a snowstorm, all by herself. They were so deeply moved by her courage that they immediately served her with a good dinner by the fire. The duchess, meanwhile, got into her gown before the guests arrived. What a wonderful ball it was!
