(2022春·广东惠州·高一校考期中)We get it: You’re tired. You’re busy. And your shoes are way over there. Excuses are OK sometimes, but not every day—and especially not today. So put on your sneakers, get up off the couch, and let us kick your excuses to the curb (路牙子).
“I ...dislike...panting (气喘)!”
Being really out of breath may mean you’re trying too much too soon, which will kill your confidence. But you don’t have to be huffing and puffing to get a workout. Active doesn’t have to mean high-intensity (高强度). It’s just about moving.
“I hate exercise.”
It may seem unbearable, but you just have to get started. Exercise releases endorphins (your brain’s own feel-good chemicals), which can be habit forming. What’s the best exercise? The one you’ll do regularly. So you may hate running. Don’t run! Ride your bike or just dance. Even cleaning your room is active. As long as you’re moving and getting your blood pumping, it counts. So get creative.
“I don’t have time.”
You may not have lots of time to spare when you’re busy with schoolwork, but I bet you can find 10 minutes. Bonus: An activity break will send oxygen to your brain, making you super-alert (超级警觉的) and more creative, too. Famous thinkers like Aristotle and Steve Jobs liked “walking meetings”, and you can follow in their footsteps by moving around while you brainstorm about a tough task or memorize your English vocabulary.
“I never see results !”
Even if you train with the help of a professional, you won’t see results right away. But you will feel them almost immediately. Don’t focus on how your body looks -focus on how you feel. Keep a journal of when you exercise (or don’t) and how you feel that day: Stressed? Focused? Tired? When you start noticing the amazing effects of exercise, you’ll have no excuses.
1.The underlined part “huffing and puffing” in Paragraph 2 can be replaced by_______.

C.produces good results D.you can spare time on
3.Steve Jobs is mentioned to prove that doing exercise_______.
A.is good for one’s figure B.is good for one’s health
C.makes one much happier D.makes one more productive
4.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Exercise Excuses We Are Not Buying
B.Benefits of Regular Physical Activity
C.The Best Exercise and Fitness Routines
D.How to Get Started with an Exercise Plan
(2022春·广东惠州·高一校考期中)Before my first hike to the Rocky Mountains, I was a homebody. I had friends to hang out with, several hobbies, and I felt comfortable spending weeks or even months in my hometown without going anywhere. I thought there was no difference between seeing something on TV and seeing something with one’s own eyes.
The situation changed one day when David, my best friend, came to my room. He always got a couple of colorful bugs in his head. He succeeded in talking me into joining him on his trip to the Rocky Mountains.
This was my first time in the mountains, so I was turning my head in all directions. Unluckily, the weather was foggy most of the time, and the higher we climbed the mountains, the less we could see. But I still enjoyed the hike. I walked fast, and because of that I ran out of energy long before we got to the top. David knew how to save energy.
When we finally got to the top, nothing had really changed. The same fog was covering everything. I felt disappointed, as I expected to see the view from above and take some photos. We spent a couple of hours on the top, and decided to turn back. Then the wind suddenly cleared the clouds and the sun came out. It wasn’t until then that I knew how beautiful the mountains looked. And for some moments I couldn’t believe my eyes.
At that moment, I realized that I wouldn’t be able to live a life without visiting the mountains at least twice a year.

C.The author’s attitude towards traveling.
D.The author’s first hike to the Rocky Mountains.

(2022春·广东湛江·高一湛江二十一中校考期中)You may not know a lot of people when you start senior high school. Maybe your friends from junior high school are going to a different senior high school. Even if you know other freshmen (一年级学生), you still feel jittery that you don’t know any upperclassmen. How are you going to make friends among this sea of unknown faces?
Most senior high schools hold the freshman orientation (迎新会) before school actually starts. It is helpful because you not only learn your way around the building but also get to meet some of your teachers and fellow freshmen. That way, when you show up on your first day of school, you may already recognize a few familiar faces.
When you talk to people at orientation, you’ll probably find that a lot of them are feeling just like you are. They’re all new to the school and don’t know what to expect. Talking about a common concern with your classmates can help you develop friendships.
The work in senior high school is something freshmen are probably worried about. It builds on what you learned in junior high school, giving you a more advanced (高深的) knowledge of many subjects. So you may find you have more work to do or that it’s a bit more challenging. If you ever find your work too difficult, teachers can give you extra help.
Senior high school also has more after-school activities than junior high school, such as clubs, music and theater groups and sports teams. This is a good time to explore your interests and try new things.
Junior high school taught you the basics of time management and social skills while providing you with a little extra support and guidance. Senior high school gives you the chance to learn how to be more independent and responsible.

(2022春·广东·高一校考期中)Marine cold spells are cold versions of heat waves: periods of exceptionally cold water which are able to hurt or help the ecosystems they hit. Today, the oceans experience just 25% of the cold spell days they did in the 1980s, and cold spells are about 15% less intense (强烈的), according to a new study. Weaker cold spells could mean they’re less likely to cause mass die-off events, but having fewer cold spells also means recovery periods from marine heat waves are disappearing.
“Recently, studies have focused more on heat waves and warm ocean temperature events than on the cold events,” said lead author Yuxin Wang, an ocean and climate scientist. “Because marine cold spells have both positive and negative impacts, understanding when, where and why these spells appear is very important for fisheries’ long-term planning.”
Wang and her colleagues analyzed sea surface temperature data from 1982 to 2020, checking for periods of either terribly hot or cold temperatures. They found that oceans are warming, and sea surface temperatures are becoming variable over time. That variability leads the intensities of marine heat waves and cold spells to change at different rates, making it more difficult for scientists to forecast (预测) each.
Establishing global trends in marine cold spells and their relationship to global warming is an important step, but further studies are needed to control regional and local effects. Those local effects include impacts on fisheries. “Marine cold spells play double roles in influencing ecosystems,” Wang said. ”Cold spells can cause terrible impacts. But they can counteract the impacts of heat waves.”
Extreme (极端的) events affect coastal communities and economies, but members of the public might not be aware of how they’re going to intensify in the future. We need to get the word out.” said Darmaraki, a physical oceanographer. “Information about the underlying physical causes of these extreme events can help improve the forecast. That information can be provided for fisheries. The earlier communities know what to expect, the better they can prepare.”
28.How does the author bring up the topic?
A.By referring to popular views on marine cold spells
B.By describing the bad influence of climate change.
C.By introducing changes in marine cold spells.
D.By comparing cold spells and heat waves.
29.What does Yuxin Wang mention about cold events in Paragraph 2?
A.Previous data on them is useless.
B.They have little impact on ecosystems.
C.They can last longer with human effort.
D.Research into them is of great value.
30.What does the underlined word “counteract” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Strengthen. B.Reduce.
C.Spread. D.Prove.
31.What do Darmaraki’s words mainly suggest?
A.The public’s knowledge of extreme events should be improved.
B.Various threats limit the development of coastal communities.
C.Researchers lack experience in dealing with extreme events
D.Weaker cold spells are beneficial to the fishing industry.

(2022春·湖北襄阳·高一宜城市第一中学校联考期中)What you do after studying could have a big effect (影响) on how well you learn and remember. Today on Education Tips, we will explore two no-cost ways that can help you improve your learning: wakeful rest and sleep.
When many students finish studying, they often go straight to another activity. Perhaps they look at their phone or computer. They might even play a video game or watch television. But research suggests that resting after your study may help you remember what you have studied.
The basic idea is this: by stopping your activity after the study, your brain gets a chance to rest. Resting is difficult when you are playing computer games.
While this might sound unusual to you, many studies have explored the benefits (好处) of resting after learning — what is called “wakeful rest”.
A 2019 study found that both young and older adults were able to better remember information they learned after doing wakeful rest.
If you want to give “wakeful rest” a try, here are a few simple things to do. Rest quietly for five to ten minutes. Do not look at your phone, read stories or play games. It is really that easy!
Besides wakeful rest, sleep is also important for learning. The Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School (HMS) notes that sleep helps people to learn in two ways. A report on the school’s website explains that “a sleep-deprived (剥夺) person cannot focus attention well and therefore cannot learn well” . It also says, “Sleep itself helps us to memorize and that memorizing is very important for learning new information.”
The National Sleep Foundation (NSF) suggests that adults between the ages of 20 and 64 get between 7 and 9 hours of sleep per day. Teenagers may need a little bit more, and people over the age of 65 may need a little less.
Try to get some “wakeful rest” after a study. Then try to get a good night’s sleep. That’s it — a simple, no-cost way to help you remember what you learn.
40.According to the research, shortly after studying students are recommended ________
A.To read a newspaper. B.To play a video game.
C.To have a nice sleep at night. D.To take a wakeful rest.
41.How long should teenagers sleep each day according to NSF?

43.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Low - cost Tips on Working

(2022春·重庆·高一重庆八中校考期中)Britain is the sixth fattest country within the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). For more than a decade, the government has declared obesity (肥胖) a national emergency and promised to take action, only to produce disappointing plans that don’t reach what is required.
It should not have taken a disease like COVID-19 to ram home the awful consequences of the UK’s obesity. Obesity, as well as its associated conditions of diabetes (糖尿病) and high blood pressure, is strongly connected with a higher risk of death from COVID-19 and will have undoubtedly been a factor in the UK having the highest COVID-19 death rate in Europe.
As the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson’s experience of catching the virus and being admitted to ICU has reportedly resulted in a complete change in him, who has previously prided himself on his dislike of an over-controlling state. The government is expected to set out a new strategy this week, aimed at reducing obesity levels both in the next few months—ahead of a possible second wave of infections—and the longer term.
This obvious change is welcome, but only if it results in a complete change in the government’s approach, which doesn’t rely on personal responsibility but on much tougher rules, as with tobacco and alcohol.
There is plenty of evidence about what is needed to cut obesity and in recent years, many reports, including from Public Health England and the former chief medical officer, have called for urgent action. Yet these calls were ignored by the government that has seemingly put the food and drink industry’s financial interests over the health of the nation.
54.What has the government done with obesity in the past ten years?
A.It has denied it is a national emergency.
B.It has called for immediate action on it.
C.It has taken effective steps to control it.
D.It has made unsatisfying plans to reduce it.
55.What does the underlined phrase “ram home” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Make people rather tired of. B.Make people highly doubtful of.
C.Make people fully aware of. D.Make people deeply ashamed of.
56.What might the British government do next?
A.Place less stress on financial interests.
B.Carry out a new strategy to cut obesity.
C.Set stricter limits on tobacco and alcohol.
D.Take action to reduce COVID-19 death rate.
57.What’s the best title for the text?
A.UK Suffering from COVID-19
B.UK Ready for a Complete Change
C.Obesity: An Urgent Problem in the UK
D.Obesity: A Cause of Highest COVID-19 Death Rate
(2021春·辽宁沈阳·高一东北育才学校校考期中)If you’re prone to browse through Twitter, or can’t take yet another stressful headline in the news, Oprah Winfrey has some suggestions on what books to read next.
Song of Solomon
By Toni Morrison
American author Toni Morrison was one of Winfrey’s longtime friends. Winfrey described Morison as “a magician with language who understood the power of words” after her death in August 2019. The 1977 novel Song of Solomon tells the story of a fictional man from Michigan named Milkman Dead.
Between the World and Me
By Ta-Nehisi Coates
Winfrey called Ta-Nehisi Coates “a bearer of the torch, who carries on the legacy of our ancestors and is also entirely so original.” This nonfiction book, Between the World and Me, which won the National Book Award in 2015, is formatted as a letter to Coates’ son and grapples with inequality and race in America.
The Soul of America
By Jon Meacham
Winfrey recommends this United States history book, written by Pultizer Prize-winner Jon Meacham, “to guide me and help me understand our current era and reassure that our country can bounce back from dark times.”
This book is especially prescient in light of the upcoming election. “In moments when public life feels unsatisfactory, then, it’s instructive—even necessary—to remember first principles,” writes Meacham.
The Power of Now
By Eckhart Tolle
Winfrey said that The Power of Now by spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle “has changed the way I see life.” The book explores quandaries like: “How do you find peace when everything is in chaos?” Winfrey said.
58.In the eyes of Winfrey, Toni Morrison ______.
A.had excellent command of words
B.was an expert in American History
C.was spiritual mentor of modern people
D.inherit and develop the traditional literature
59.If you feel disappointed with reality, you can gain hope from ______.

C.The Soul of America D.Between the World and Me

(2022春·广东珠海·高一珠海市第二中学校考期中)Researchers say they have translated the meaning of gestures (手势) that wild chimpanzees (黑猩猩) use to communicate. They say wild chimps communicate 19 specific messages to one another with a “vocabulary” of 66 gestures. The scientists discovered this by following and filming groups of chimps in Uganda, and examining more than 5,000 incidents of these meaningful exchanges.
Dr. Catherine Hobaiter, who led the research, said that this was the only form of intentional communication to be recorded in the animal kingdom. Only humans and chimps, she said, had a system of communication where they purposely sent a message to another group member.
“That’s what’s so amazing about chimp gestures,” she said. “They’re the only thing that looks like human language in that respect.”
Although previous research has shown that apes and monkeys can understand complex information from another animal’s call, the animals do not appear to use their voices intentionally to communicate messages. This was a significant difference between calls and gestures, Dr. Hobaiter said.
Chimps will check to see if they have the attention of the animal with which they wish to communicate. In one case, a mother presents her foot to her crying baby, signaling “Climb on me.” The youngster immediately jumps on to its mothers back and they travel off together. “The big message from this study is that there is another species (物种) out there that is meaningful in its communication, so that’s not unique to humans,” said Dr Hobaiter.
Dr. Susanne Shultz, an evolutionary biologist from the University of Manchester, said the study was helpful in seeking to enrich our knowledge of the evolution of human language. But, she added, the results were “a little disappointing”.
“The vagueness (模糊) of the gesture meanings suggests either that the chimps have little to communicate, or we are still missing a lot of the information included in their gestures and actions,” she said. “Moreover, the meanings seem to not go beyond what other animal convey with non-verbal communication. So, it seems the gulf remains.”
61.What do chimps and humans have in common according to Dr. Hobaiter?
A.Memorizing specific words. B.Communicating messages on purpose.
C.Using voices to communicate. D.Understanding complex information.
62.What did Dr. Shultz think of the study?
A.It was well designed but poorly conducted.
B.It was a failure but the methods were admirable.
C.It was inspiring but the evidence was unreliable.
D.It was a good try but the findings were limited.
63.What does the underlined word “gulf” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Balance. B.Difference. C.Conflict. D.Connection.
64.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.Chimpanzee behaviour study achieved a breakthrough
B.Chimpanzees developed specific communication skills
C.Chimpanzees the smartest species in the animal kingdom
D.Chimpanzee language communication gestures translated
(2022春·广东珠海·高一珠海市第二中学校考期中)For quite some time I have had an interest in the situation of the homeless. I have read about it, prayed over it, and have done small things to help. But feeling that I could, and should, do more to make a difference. I concluded that living as a homeless man— at least for a very brief period— was the best way to understand what it’s like to have no place to call home.
I decided that St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church would be my first stop. Since the church opens its basement to homeless people every Friday for a hot meal, St. Vincent’s was symbolically a very good place to start my day as a homeless man.
After praying before the Blessed Sacrament, I hit the subfreezing streets with no money. I got into a line of men, women and children waiting to be admitted into the dining room where a free hot meal is served every day.
From there I walked to Health Care for the Homeless— an organization dedicated to providing free medical care to people who have no permanent residence. Inside were about 75 homeless women and men waiting to be seen by a nurse. There I spoke with an older man who had serious family problems that caused his homelessness.
Next, I stopped at a hotel and fast food restaurant asking if they were hiring. From there I walked the streets of downtown Baltimore, asking people for a little loose change to buy a cup of coffee. I politely approached (接近) approximately 35 people. About 30 of them ignored me, and said they didn’t have any money, or simply said no. But five people did offer me a small donation. I explained what I was doing, and thankfully declined their generosity.
Later that night, as I walked back to my vehicle, I realized that I was a richer person for having lived one day as a homeless man I thought about the homeless men and women I came across, and their problems.
65.Why did the author decide to make a start from the church?
A.It impressed the author in many ways.
B.It opened to the homeless regularly
C.Only it offered the homeless a hot meal
D.Many homeless people were allowed to live in the basement.
66.What did the author do while he was in Health Care for the Homeless?
A.He had a word with a homeless man
B.He realized it was too sad to have no money
C.He helped an older man with family problems
D.He had a hot meal with some women and children
67.What can we infer from the fifth paragraph?
A.The author worked a few hours in the restaurant
B.Very few people looked down upon the homeless
C.No food restaurants agreed to hire a homeless man
D.People in the society cared little about the homeless
68.What would the author most probably do in the future?
A.He would treasure what he had got in life
B.He would spend more time with the homeless
C.He would find a better way to help the homeless
D.He would invite the homeless to his home more often

Whether you are a beginner or already a regular runner, these apps will come in handy for planning routes that avoid busy places on your next run
Strava
Just put in whether you’re running or cycling, how far you’d like to go and whether you’re keen to avoid hills, the app will then suggest a number of routes near you, based on where other runners have been. It is a good way to see running routes you might not have explored.
Komoot
As you plan the route, it’ll work out the distance of your run and give you the option to input your running speed, allowing the app to work out how long the route shall take you.
Map my run
Map my run gives runners the option to plan their own route, or the ability to search through popular running routes near you, which is even more helpful for beginners. The app gives you the option of saving your favourite routes and accessing them on the app if you get lost mid-run.
OS Maps
Another hugely popular map-building platform, OS Maps is pretty high tech when it comes to planning a running route. You’ll need a subscription to get some of the features, but using the free app you can find local running routes. There are almost two million routes stored in the routes database, and many of them are free.

In May, the US Department of Education (DOE) published its findings that the number of homes without access (接入) to internet has been getting smaller, but 14 percent of homes in city areas and 18percent of homes in the countryside still do not have internet connections.
In some states, the problem is much more serious. For example, in the countryside of northern Mississippi, a third of the 294 homes in Maben do not have computers. And close to half have no access to internet whether they can pay for it or not.
Sharon Stidham, a mother in Maben, has to take her four boys to the school library at East Webster High School. Her husband works there, so the children can use the internet for their schoolwork. A signal tower can be seen through the trees from their home, but they could not put aside any money for the internet. Research results from the National Center for Education (NCE) have shown that students with internet at home get much better scores in reading, math and science than the ones who do not. Some teachers call this problem “the homework divide”. Jessica Rosenworcel, an NCE member, said, “The so-called homework divide is the cruelest part of the digital age and it is hurting the poor students and creating a big barrier to their dreams.”
Local communities (社区) have started to help. They made lists of restaurants and other businesses with Wi-Fi places where children are welcome to come and do their homework. And many public libraries have also planned to provide free access to the students next year.
72.What has DOE found out in its survey?
A.Students with internet at home are doing better at school.
