(2022春·天津·高一天津二十五中校考期中)Many people love gum(口香糖). Delicious as it is, the dirty waste can be a problem for humans. The main material for gum cannot break down naturally. Lots of gum waste ends up being thrown away into the rivers and grounds each year.
Now thanks to the company, Gumdrop Ltd., there may be a way to deal with this problem. The UK-based company has come up with a clever idea that enables easy disposal of gum waste using pink boxes they’ve produced. Passers-by can simply throw any unwanted gum into the pink boxes set up across London. Once full, they are mailed to the factory where the gum is used to create more pink boxes. The company said that gum waste could be changed into other useful things like shoes as well.
Bullus, who founded the company, said she decided to create the clever boxes after observing the mess caused by gum waste on the streets of London. She had spent many months studying how to use gum waste as a material for the clever boxes. After hundreds of failures, she finally succeeded.
To know whether people would like to throw gum waste into the pink boxes, she did two tests. She set up two boxes inside a men’s restroom at Southampton Airport. Bullus said they had to pick up the full boxes just 5 times a year, an effort that cost the company $300. But airport officials would have spent $4,600 over the same period cleaning up the mess left behind by carelessly thrown gum waste. A similar test at London’s famous Villiers Street resulted in a 40% decrease(减少)in gum waste.
Their success has led to the rapid setting-up of the pink boxes across London. Bullus now hopes the pink boxes can help not only London, but also many other places. One day, for the first time in her life, she picked up one of her grandchild’s paintbrushes and just started putting color on the paper.
Happiness dawned on Chen as she suddenly could paint lovely natural scenery. “I had nothing else to do, so I just picked up the paintbrush and had a try,” Chen said.
After her stroke, Chen completed in-patient therapy(治疗)in Texas. Then she moved to New York to enroll in an experimental robotic-assisted therapy program. Stroke Awareness Oregon had contacted the family to see if it was possible to include some of her paintings in an auction (拍卖) to raise money for awareness and rapid response programs for stroke patients in the state. “They go to a good cause, which is what Mom wants to achieve with stroke of Hope—really putting the word out there that it’s not over once you have a stroke,” said Liana.

In the city I live in, we have a small local national park full of trees. I like that place very much, although I do wish it was bigger.

London has already hosted the Olympics twice before and the 2021 Olympics will make it the first city in history to have held three Olympic games.
The first London Olympics in 1908
These games were going to be held in Rome but, because of a volcano, Rome wasn’t ready. London agreed to stage the games and the White City Olympic Stadium was built in just 10 months. (2022春·天津·高一校联考期中)A few weeks ago, my teenage daughter failed a test. She was embarrassed, angry, anxious and there were tears in her eyes. This grade might prevent her from qualifying for the next key class she wanted to take.
She took some time to complain to me. Then I saw something interesting. She calmed herself down by making a joke. She expressed thankfulness that she didn’t have bigger problems. Then she made a plan to talk to her teacher to improve her skills. This was a great change from the kid I was watching deal with disappointment a few years ago, the one who once was unwilling to take responsibility and blamed others, which shows she has grown up and understood the good in the bad.
We expect our kids to learn and grow, but many of them will also grow through adversity (逆境), and even thrive (茁壮成长) after trauma (创伤). Psychologists call it post-traumatic growth. Trauma, defined as an emotional response to a terrible event like an accident, attack, natural disaster, or other life-changing happenings, is painful and even can be harmful. Trauma does leave its mark, but the mark may not be all bad and there can also be growth.
In one study, researchers surveyed nearly 385 people who experienced financial adversity during the pandemic lockdown (疫情封锁), even while working full-time. These people are also the parents or primary caregivers or young children who were being homeschooled. And those surveyed had either been sick with COVID-19 or had a loved one with the disease. Despite all of this adversity, 88 percent of the people surveyed said they now have stronger family relationships and a greater appreciation for life. Some said they experienced spiritual growth and 11 percent reported they discovered new opportunities.
Hardship makes us adapt, respond, and find other ways to solve it. When we do, we become not only able to heal the trauma associated with it but also thrive again. We build up confidence and experience that will help us the next time we face adversity.
21.What can we know about the author’s daughter?
A.She lost heart after failing the test.
B.She was very anxious about the coming test.
C.She changed a lot with the help of the author.
D.She may lose the chance of attending an important class.
22.What does the author think of his daughter after the test?
A.She grew up.
B.She should learn to handle disappointment.
C.She suffered severe trauma.
D.She was avoiding responsibility.
23.What can we know from Paragraph 3?
A.Post-traumatic growth is the result of emotional injuries.
B.Traumatic experiences have both advantages and disadvantages.
C.Traumatic experiences hold back kids’ psychological growth.
D.One will not make a positive change without experiencing trauma.
24.What did most surveyed people have in common?
A.They benefited from the adversity.
B.They made a good recovery from COVID-19.
C.They were good at controlling their emotions.
D.They grasped new chances in their career.
25.Which would be the best title for this text?
A.Help children build up confidence B.Trauma leaves a mark on children
C.Uncover the good in the bad D.Avoid the adversity in a positive way
(2022春·天津·高一校联考期中)Turning 18 is a big deal when you are a teenager. It means you are responsible for yourself and don’t need your parents’ permission any more. However, there are lots of opinions about when one becomes an adult. Some are based on science, while others are personal opinions. While currently the age is 18, science supports 25 as a more sensible age for adulthood, and I agree.
While studying the brain of teenagers, scientists have learned that when kids are around 18, their prefrontal cortex(前额皮层) is only halfway developed. The prefrontal-cortex helps people set and achieve goals by receiving signals from different regions of the brain to process information and adapting accordingly. That halfway development means that you still have things to learn and your brains still have time to develop until the age of 25.
Some people think going off to college and living on your own qualify(使...具有资格)you as an adult, while others may believe having a steady income and being able to afford to live on your own are what make you an adult. Not everyone has a fortunate life where they have family that can provide support; there are situations where you are forced to become an “adult” whether you like it or not.
In the foster care(寄养) system, once a child turns 18, he or she is considered an adult and can no longer receive state-sponsored support. These children are forced into a life where they have no family or anyone to support them other than those who were there for them in the system.
Having a quality job will allow you to supply yourself with necessary things to live and help you become a more mature and responsible person. Also, going through difficult times and realizing life isn’t as easy as it seems, should qualify someone as an adult.
26.What is the author’s attitude toward considering 25 as an age for adulthood?
A.Cautious. B.Uncaring. C.Doubtful. D.positive
27.How does the prefrontal cortex work to help people set and achieve goals?
A.By dealing with received signals and responding accordingly.
B.By collecting information from other parts of the body.
C.By sending instructions to different regions of the brain.
D.By transporting sensed emotions and making records.
28.What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3?
A.Give a definition of adulthood.
B.Stress the importance of family support.
C.Prove not everyone lives a fortunate life.
D.Show opinion on becoming an adult is divided.
29.What does the underlined word “them” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A.Families. B.Children in the foster system.
C.Workers in the foster system. D.Adults.
30.What is one standard qualifying you as an adult according to the author?
A.Setting up a family.
B.Being responsible for your study.
C.Accepting and learning from the low moments in life.
D.Buying yourself quality things to live.

(2022春·天津·高一统考期中)It’s school time again! You’re probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad that summer is over. Some kids feel nervous or a little scared on the first day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and even a new school. Luckily, these “new” worries only stick around for a little while. Let’s find out more about going to a new school.
Most teachers kick off the new school year by year introducing themselves and talking about all the stuff you’ll be doing that year. When teachers do the talking on the first day, they often go over classroom rules and school rules, so you’ll know what’s allowed and what’s not. Please pay close attention.
You might already know a lot of people in your classes on the first day, but it’s a great day to make a new friend, so try to say hello to kids you know and new ones that you don’t. Make the first move and you’ll be glad you did, and so will have your new friends!
Seeing friends you haven’t seen for a while can make the first day a good one. You can make the day feel special by wearing clothes that you really like. Maybe you got a great T-shirt on one of your vacations, or a pair of sneakers(运动鞋). (2022春·天津河西·高一统考期中)In choosing a friend, one should be very careful. A good friend can help you study. You can have fun together and make each other happy. Sometimes you will meet fair-weather friends. They will be with you as long as you have money or luck, but when you are down, they will run away. How do I know when I have found a good friend?
In my opinion, understanding is the most important quality in choosing a good friend. A good friend tries to understand how another person is feeling. He is not quick to judge. Instead, he tries to think of ways to be helpful. He is also a good listener.
At the same time, however, a good friend is honest. He does not look for faults in others. He notices their good points. In short, a friend will try to understand me and accept me.
Another quality of a friend is reliability. I can always depend on a good friend. If he tells me he will meet me somewhere at a certain time, I can be sure that he will be there. If I need a favor, he will do his best to help me. If I am in trouble, he will not run away from me.
There is a fourth quality that makes friend special. A special friend is someone with whom we can have fun. We should enjoy our lives, and we would enjoy our friendship. That is why I especially like friends who are fun to be with. A good friend likes the same things I like. We share experiences and learn from each other. A good friend has a sense of humor, too. He likes to laugh with me. That is how we share in the joy of being friends. And I know that he is looking for the same quality in me.
When I meet someone that is reliable, honest, and understanding, I know I’ve found a good friend.
46.In the opinion of the writer, what is the most important in choosing a good friend?
A.A sense of humor. B.Sharing experiences.
C.A good listener. D.Understanding.
47.If you have fair-weather friends, ______.
A.you will be refused when you get into trouble.
B.they will give you all that they have when you need help
C.you will become rich
D.you can be sure that you get real friends
48.Good friends need to ______.
A.have money or luck B.understand each other’s feeling
C.be helped with money D.always point out each other’s mistakes
49.The passage is mainly about ______.
A.how to get along with friends B.where to choose friends
C.the qualities of friends D.the importance of having a friend
50.The underlined word “reliability” means someone that you will ______.
A.rely on B.call on C.go on D.hold on
(2023春·天津武清·高一统考期末)By day, Robert Titterton is a lawyer. In his spare time he goes on stage beside pianist Maria Raspopova—not as a musician but as her page turner. “I’m not a trained musician, but I’ve learnt to read music so I can help Maria in her performance.”
Mr. Titterton is chairman of the Omega Ensemble but has been the group’s official page turner for the past four years. His job is to sit beside the pianist and turn the pages of the score(总谱) so the musician doesn’t have to break the flow of sound by doing it themselves. He said he became just as nervous as those playing instruments on stage.
“It’s a demanding job. A lot of skills are needed for it. You have to make sure you don’t turn two pages at once and make sure you find the repeats in the music when you have to go back to the right spot.” Mr. Titterton explained.
Being a page turner requires plenty of practice. Some pieces of music can go for 40 minutes and require up to 50 page turns, including back turns for repeat passages. Silent onstage communication is key, and each pianist has their own style of “nodding” to indicate a page turn which they need to practise with their page turner.
But like all performances, there are moments when things go wrong. “I was turning the page to get ready for the next page, but the wind from the turn caused the spare pages to fall off the stand.” Mr. Titterton said. “Luckily I was able to catch them and put them back.”
Most page turners are piano students or up-and-coming concert pianists, although Ms Raspopova has once asked her husband to help her out on stage.
“My husband is the worst page turner.” she laughed. “He’s interested in the music, feeling every note, and I have to say: ‘Turn, turn!’ Robert is the best page turner I’ve had in my entire life.”
51.What should Titterton be able to do to be a page turner?
A.Read music. B.Play the piano. C.Sing songs. D.Fix the instruments.
52.The underlined word “demanding” in paragraph 3 probably means ______.
A.boring B.tiring C.challenging D.creative
53.What does Titterton need to practise?
A.Counting the pages.
B.Recognizing the “nodding”.
C.Catching falling objects.
D.Performing in his own style.
54.Why is Ms Raspopova’s husband “the worst page turner”?
A.He has very poor eyesight.
B.He ignores the audience.
C.He has no interest in music.

It’s good to make mistakes, and here is why.
First of all, mistakes are a clear sign that we are trying new things. It’s always good to try new things because when we are trying new things, we are growing. If we never try anything new, how can we improve? How can we expand? The simple answer is “We can’t”. Around us, everything in our physical world is the result of someone trying something new.
Another good thing about mistakes is this: When we are making mistakes, we are learning. Consider this-Edison failed 10,000 times before he perfected the light bulb. When asked how it felt to fail that many times, he said that he had learned 10,000 things that didn’t work.
Finally, when we make a mistake, we are much closer to success. Why? Because when all is said and done, we will have tried some number of things before we succeeded. Every time we make a mistake, we eliminate one of those things and are one step closer.
But all this doesn’t mean that we should go through life without considering the result of a mistake. Quite the contrary, when we try something new, we have to be willing to set some reasonable limits. We shouldn’t do anything blindly. Because we all have limited resources—in the form of time and money, so we must realize that it probably won’t be perfect the first time and arrange these resources appropriately so we can learn, make corrections, and try it again. Only by accepting and using our mistakes in this way can we make significant advances in our lives.
There is an old saying that goes, “If you’re not making mistakes, you’re not trying hard enough.” So go forth and make mistakes. And learn. And grow.
56.From the second paragraph, we can conclude that ______.
A.mistakes are unnecessary for development

58.The underlined word “eliminate” means ______.
A.make up for B.get rid of C.choose D.solve
59.According to the passage, one thing we should pay attention to about making mistakes is ______.

(2022春·天津东丽·高一统考期末)Language is in a constant state of change. British English shows this clearly. Take the word “Cheerio!” for example. It has been a British way to say goodbye for more than a century, but it’s dying out as the English language evolves. These days, many young people simply say “laters”. Or take the word “marvelous”. At one time it was a common British word meaning “wonderful”, but over the last ten years it’s been overtaken by the American word “awesome”.
So how and why do words come into and fall out of fashion? The influence of US culture is only one explanation for why popular words in British English may change or even stop being used over time. “Awesome” is a good example, but also “fortnight”, a term not used in the US, is now falling out of fashion in British English, and in some cases has been replaced by “two weeks”.
New inventions also bring in new words. As old inventions are replaced by new ones, the words which described them also disappear and are replaced. So it’s out with the “Walkman” (a cassette player from the 80s) and in with MP4 players!
Then there’s the influence of social media. Text messages and emails have reduced words for convenience, with something like ICYMI (“in case you missed it”) becoming words in their own right. Where “friend” was once a noun, we now “friend someone on Facebook” and where we used to “love” something, now we’re “loving it”!
61.In what situation do the British use “Cheerio!”?
A.When they give thanks.
B.When they ask for help.
C.When they say goodbye.
D.When they meet new friends.
62.What does the underlined word “evolves” mean?
A.Returns. B.Develops. C.Follows. D.Falls.
63.Which word is falling out of fashion in the UK?
A.Awesome. B.Laters. C.Impressive. D.Fortnight.
64.Why does the writer talk about “Walkman”?
A.To explain how some words are replaced.
B.To show its importance.
C.To talk about its history.
D.To describe how it came into being.
65.What effect is social media having on language?
A.It is changing the way that words are used.
B.It is making meanings clearer.
C.It is bringing in many long words
D.It is making language difficult to learn.

(2023春·天津·高一天津实验中学校考期末)Dogs wag (摇摆) their tails in different directions depending on whether they are excited and wanting to move forward or threatened and thinking of moving back, a study has found.
Researchers in Italy examined the tail wagging behaviour of 30 dogs, catching their responses to a range of stimuli (刺激物) with video cameras. To conduct the study they chose 15 male dogs and 15 female ones aged between one and six years. The dogs were all family pets whose owners had allowed them to take part in the experiment at Bari University. The dogs were placed in a large wooden box with an opening at the front to allow for them to view various stimuli. They were tested one at a time.
The researchers led by Professor Giorgio Vallortigara of the University of Trieste found that when the dogs were shown their owners — a positive experience — their tails wagged energetically to the right side. When they were shown an unfamiliar human they wagged to the right, but with somewhat less enthusiasm. The appearance of a cat again caused a right-hand side wag, although with less intensity again. The appearance of a large unfamiliar dog, similar to a German shepherd, changed the direction of tail wagging to the left. Researchers supposed the dog was thinking of moving back. When the dogs were not shown any stimuli they tended to wag their tails to the left, suggesting they preferred company. While the changes in the tail wagging were not easily noticed without the aid of video, it was thought that the findings could help people judge the mood of dogs. Computer and video systems, for example, could be used by professional dog trainers to determine the mood of dogs that they were required to approach.
71.The video cameras were used to catch the dogs’ responses because ________.
A.it was easier to catch the dogs’ response changes in the tail wagging
B.the dogs were put in the wooden boxes and tested one at a time
C.they enabled the dogs’ owners to know about their dogs’ habit
D.the dogs wagged their tails in different directions when they were in different moods
72.The underlined word “intensity” in the passage means ________.
A.surprise B.worry C.hate D.excitement
73.When there are no stimuli, a dog will ________.
A.wag to the right B.wag to the left
C.not wag at all D.wag to the left and then to the right
74.The underlined word “they” refers to ________.
A.the trainers B.the dogs C.the systems D.the researchers
75.The purpose of doing the experiment is ________.
A.to help people judge the mood of dogs B.to train dogs for their owners
C.to help dogs find company D.to help people choose their pet dogs

(2023春·天津河北·高一统考期末)Do you have full confidence in your memory? There has been a discussion about whether it is shi or si in the sentence “Thus when Heaven is about to confer a great office on any man...”
Most people voted si as what they learned at school. However, People’s Education Press, a leading publisher of Chinese textbooks, claimed on Oct 26 that all its textbooks say shi.
Supporters of si feel shocked and say they’ve experienced the “Mandela Effect” — the situation in which a large number of people believe that an event occurred when it didn’t.
Many people believed that former South African president Nelson Mandela died in the 1980s in prison. However, Mandela was alive and well, eventually passing away in 2013. US researcher Fiona Broome created a website to detail her observations of this public phenomenon, coining the term.
Some often joke that our memories have been changed by a strange force. In fact, psychologists have looked into the reasons for the Mandela Effect, as reported on the US-based website Verywell Mind. For example, your mind may fill in gaps missing in your memory to make more sense of it, which is called confabulation (虚构症). However, try not to feel bad — this is not lying, but rather remembering details that never happened.
The Internet may be another reason why we tend to have Mandela Effect events, as the news we read can be false from the beginning. In 2018, Science journal published a study of over 100,000 news stories discussed across Twitter. It showed that false news can spread faster and reach more people than the truth. As a powerful way to spread information, the internet might be the main reason for falsehoods to enter our minds.
86.What is the author’s purpose of mentioning the discussion about a saying?
A.To show our memories can be wrong.
B.To provide a solution to the discussion.
C.To raise readers’ interest in confabulation.
D.To lead up to the topic of the Mandela Effect.
87.The underlined part in Paragraph 4 can be understood as________.
A.borrowing the idiom
B.describing the method
C.inventing the expression
D.correcting the description
88.What can we learn about the “Mandela Effect” from the passage?
A.It refers to people’s different attitudes to a particular event.
B.It can be explained from a psychological perspective.
C.It can be improved by remembering details clearly.
D.It can have a big influence on people’s health.
89.What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.It is harder than ever to spot false news.
B.False news travels faster than true stories.
C.The Internet causes more Mandela Effect events.
D.False information can be avoided from the beginning.
90.What is the best title of the passage?
A.The Mandela Effect and Memory
B.The Role of Psychology in Memory
C.The Impact of the Internet on Memory
D.The importance of Textbooks in Memory
I’ve been writing now for 34 years. It all started when I was just 18 years old.
As a boy growing up, I probably read hundreds of books. I read mysteries, science fiction, thrillers, and just about any other type of book I could find. I had a thirst for knowledge that never seemed to disappear, no matter how many books I read over the years. Then suddenly, I found that I too had ideas of my own that I wanted to write and share. I wanted to share things that were full of goodness, love, joy, and happiness. I tried to ignore my desire at first, but as any writer will tell you, once ideas awaken inside of you, they don’t leave you alone until you write them down. I didn’t have a computer, or even a typewriter, but I grabbed a pen and a notebook and wrote down everything that was burning inside of me.
When I was finally done, I didn’t know how to share my work with the world. There was no internet back then, no smartphones, and no social media. However, I sought out (找到) the editor of my local newspaper and asked if he would like to print what I’d written. He was a good man, full of both wisdom and kindness. He not only printed my first story but agreed to publish anything else I was willing to write.
After that, of course, nothing could stop me. I continued to write new articles each week, which were published in different local papers and later on the internet. Years later, I even self-published two collections of my stories in book form.
Through my writing, I slowly became a better person. Writing allowed me to discover the goodness and light that exist in us all. I also found that we are all writers, whether we put pen to paper or not.
With every choice we make, with every thought we think, and with every action we take, we are writing our own life story.

A.He wanted to try writing thrillers.
B.He wanted to express his own ideas.

92.What can we know about the author’s writing career?
A.It was lucky but short.
B.It was busy and lonely.
C.He like writing but he gave it up.
D.He pushed forward with his writing.
93.After publishing his works, the author________.
A.felt writing had improved him
B.encouraged others to put pen to paper
C.often thought about the choices he made
D.used social media to spread his influence
94.What can we know from the last paragraph?
A.We will think twice before writing and action.
B.We will make wise choice by writing articles.
C.We will become a better person by writing.
D.We are all the authors of our own lives.
95.Which of the following can best describe the author?
A.Hardworking. B.Cooperative.
C.Humorous. D.Outgoing.
(2018春·天津·高一校联考期末)She was sitting up at four months, walking at eight months and completing 100-piece jigsaw puzzles (拼图玩具) at 15 months. So it is no surprise that Abigail Wilson, 15, from Connecticut, USA, recently made history when she became the youngest black girl ever accepted into an American university! “I’m proud of myself for getting in, but I usually find it hard to get excited. It’s pretty cool, I guess,” said Abigail.
Her mother, Nancy, said that Abigail was a quiet baby. She didn’t speak her first words until she was 22 months old! Her parents thought something must be wrong, but when she started to talk, her speech was perfect. She already knew colors, letters and was able to read. Her parents read her normal bedtime stories and they didn’t know she was learning all of it.
Abigail has always been the youngest person in her class. At six she was in the fourth grade, at ten she took her first high school class in Maths. She has studied several languages, including Spanish, French, Chinese, Russian, Arabic and German.
Abigail says that she doesn’t usually plan when she studies, she calls herself scatterbrained (浮躁的) and she always delays things up to the last minute. This gives her the motivation to really do something.
In her free time, Abigail plays basketball, surfs the Internet, reads, cooks and hangs out with her friends. She has also studied music. Her mother says that Abigail’s music lessons helped her to be a normal teen. She believed that Abigail needed to be in a situation where she had to fail in order to learn. “She found playing the piano very difficult, but it made her learn better,” said Nancy. “She can’t always be successful, she won’t be able to learn anything! People always learn more from their failures than from their successes.”
96.Why is it not surprising that Abigail went to university at 15?
A.Because she was hard-working.
B.Because she was always ahead of other kids.

97.What can we learn about Abigail?
A.She is crazy about sports. B.She has a gift for language.
C.Her favorite subject is math. D.Her success is due to good habits.
98.When it comes to studies, Abigail _________.

根据第一段“Many people love gum(口香糖). Delicious as it is, the dirty waste can be a problem for humans. The main material for gum cannot break down naturally. Lots of gum waste ends up being thrown away into the rivers and grounds each year.(许多人喜欢口香糖。虽然它很美味,但这脏的垃圾对人类来说可能是一个问题。口香糖的主要原料不能自然分解。每年都有大量的口香糖垃圾被丢弃到河里和地上。)”以及第二段第一句“Now thanks to the company, Gumdrop Ltd., there may be a way to deal with this problem. (现在多亏了Gumdrop有限公司,也许有办法解决这个问题。)”可知第一段介绍口香糖是为了说明口香糖所带来的问题,口香糖垃圾不能分解,会造成环境污染。故选B。
2.细节理解题。根据第二段最后两句“Once full, they are mailed to the factory where the gum is used to create more pink boxes. The company said that gum waste could be changed into other useful things like shoes as well.(一旦满了,它们就会被邮寄到工厂,在那里,口香糖被用来制造更多的粉色盒子。该公司表示,口香糖垃圾也可以变成其他有用的东西,比如鞋子。)”可知,粉红色盒子被用来回收利用口香糖垃圾,故选C。
3.推理判断题。根据第三段“Bullus, who founded the company, said she decided to create the clever boxes after observing the mess caused by gum waste on the streets of London. She had spent many months studying how to use gum waste as a material for the clever boxes. After hundreds of failures, she finally succeeded.(创立这家公司的Bullus说,她在伦敦街头观察到口香糖垃圾造成的脏乱后,决定制作这种精巧的盒子。她花了好几个月的时间研究如何将口香糖垃圾用作制作精巧盒子的材料。经过数百次失败,她终于成功了。)”可知 Bullus有创造力且工作努力。故选A。
根据第四段中“She set up two boxes inside a men’s restroom at Southampton Airport. Bullus said they had to pick up the full boxes just 5 times a year, an effort that cost the company $300. But airport officials would have spent $4,600 over the same period cleaning up the mess left behind by carelessly thrown gum waste. A similar test at London’s famous Villiers Street resulted in a 40% decrease(减少)in gum waste.(她在Southampton机场的一个男洗手间里放了两个箱子。Bullus说,他们一年只需要捡5次装满的盒子,这项工作花费了该公司300美元。但在同一时期,机场官员将花费4600美元清理不小心扔掉的口香糖垃圾留下的烂摊子。在伦敦著名的Villiers Street进行的一次类似测试使口香糖垃圾减少40%。)”可知这两次测试中粉红色的盒子存在可以减轻处理口香糖垃圾的压力,故选D。
5.推理判断题。根据最后一段第二句“Bullus now hopes the pink boxes can help not only London, but also many other places.(Bullus现在希望这些粉色盒子不仅能帮助伦敦,还能帮助许多其他地方。) ”可知Bullus未来计划是把粉红盒子应用到其他城市。故选A。

根据“New inventions also bring in new words. As old inventions are replaced by new ones, the words which described them also disappear and are replaced. So it’s out with the “Walkman” (a cassette player from the 80s) and in with MP4 players! (新发明也会带来新词汇。随着旧发明被新发明所取代,描述它们的词语也随之消失并被取代。因此,“随身听”(80年代的盒式磁带播放器)过时了,MP4播放器入世了!)”可知,这一段提到Walkman是为了表明一些旧词汇随着新发明的出现也会随着消失。故选A。
根据最后一段“Then there’s the influence of social media. Text messages and emails have reduced words for convenience, with something like ICYMI (“in case you missed it”) becoming words in their own right. (还有社交媒体的影响。为了方便起见,短信和电子邮件减少了单词,像ICYMI(“万一你错过了”)这样的词本身就变成了单词。“朋友”曾经是一个名词,我们现在是“Facebook上交朋友”,我们过去“爱”某件事,现在我们“爱它”了!)”可知,社交媒体改变了我们对一些单词的使用方式。故选A。

由第二段中的“Researchers in Italy examined the tail wagging behavior of 30 dogs, catching their responses to a range of stimuli (刺激物) with video cameras. (意大利的研究人员研究了30只狗的摇尾行为,用摄像机捕捉它们对一系列刺激的反应)”和最后一段中的“While the changes in the tail wagging were not easily noticed without the aid of video, it was thought that the findings could help people judge the mood of dogs. (虽然没有视频的帮助,摇尾巴的变化不容易被注意到,但人们认为这些发现可以帮助人们判断狗的情绪)”可知,没有摄像机的帮助,人们很难发现狗的摇尾变化,所以在狗摇动尾巴时,摄像机更容易捕捉到狗的反应变化。故选A项。
由第三段中的“The researchers led by Professor Giorgio Vallortigara of the University of Trieste found that when the dogs were shown their owners—a positive experience—their tails wagged energetically to the right side. When they were shown an unfamiliar human they wagged to the right, but with somewhat less enthusiasm. The appearance of a cat again caused a right-hand side wag, although with less intensity again.

由最后一段中的“While the changes in the tail wagging were not easily noticed without the aid of video, it was thought that the findings could help people judge the mood of dogs. Computer and video systems, for example, could be used by professional dog trainers to determine the mood of dogs that they were required to approach. (虽然没有视频的帮助,摇尾巴的变化不容易被注意到,但人们认为这些发现可以帮助人们判断狗的情绪。例如,计算机和视频系统可以被专业的训狗师用来确定他们需要接近的狗的情绪)”可知,此实验能帮助人们判断狗的情绪,因此做这个实验的目的是帮助人们判断狗的情绪。故选A。
