Imagine a world with no more wild animals: no elephants, no giraffes and no lions.
To some people, that thought is too terrible, so they are doing something about it. Being surrounded by wild animals — feeding them and caring for them — is all Tiffany Soechting has ever wanted to do all her life. And that is exactly what she does.
Soechting is the human “mother” to the 500 animals that live on her family’s wildlife farm. On the farm, she cares for creatures from every continent except Antarctica (南极洲).
Visitors get a chance not only to see these creatures there, but also to feed them, And the animals are not against that. For them, people and the special vehicles used on the farm are part of their natural environment. “When you come here, the animals are walking around freely like they would if they were in their native homeland. And you can touch them,” said Soechting. “For the most part, the majority of them were born and grew up here. But even when we bring them in — like if we bring a new male in the rest of the herd (兽群) is comfortable with what is going on.”
Tourists are not the only people to visit the farm. Many schools come for field trips all throughout the year, so it is a place of education as well as conservation. But for Soechting, the farm is simply home, and it has been for many generations.
As the animals walk peacefully around, it is easy to forget that a busy city is just a few minutes away. Tiffany Soechting and the 500 animals do not seem to give it a second thought.
1.What does Tiffany Soechting do?

2.What can visitors do on Soechting’s family farm?

Dear Tom,
I’m writing to you from a small town in South America. I’m involved in a volunteer program here. At an orphanage I’m working with the children of all ages, from small babies of just a few months old, to older children up to the age of about 14. I play with the babies, feed them, bathe them, and generally take care of them. As to the older children I teach them colouring, painting and do art and craft activities with them.
One of the most rewarding things about this experience is being a small part of the children’s lives. I have had the most amazing experiences here, including helping one of the babies learn to walk. She was only crawling when I first arrived and now she can walk by herself. I will never forget the day when she called me “mama”. I was surprised because she was attached to me so quickly.
Every day is a new experience. Every day brings more smiles and teaches me so much about myself as well as the children. The children’s happy faces will stay with me forever.
I would describe my overall experience as absolutely amazing. I really love everything about the programme. It has given me the best experience that I can never get anywhere else. In two years time I hope to do another volunteer work at a center here for people who have HIV/AIDS. Together with other volunteers I hope to share our common love with them.
How are you getting on recently? Do you have any interest in doing some volunteer work? I’m looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours,
Joan

In be United States the most popular form of folk dancing has been square-dancing since the earlier days. In those days, men and women worked in groups to build a house or harvest crops. When the work was done, they usually danced merrily and happily in a store or in a farm kitchen.
Nowadays square-dancing is still performed. A square, which has four sides, is formed by four couples. Each couple stands on one side of the square, the man on the left and the woman on the right. That is to say, one square has eight people and they stand facing the center of the square.
Large or small numbers of people can dance together. Sometimes as many as 800 or 1,000 people may be dancing all at the same time.
Costumes are worn by those who do the square-dancing. This makes the dancing more colorful to watch. Men may have colored shirts and western trousers they wear only on special days. Women often wear full skirts of different colors with a pretty blouse. In some country areas, everyone wears their best clothes.
Today in all parts of the US you will find some schools, clubs, or other groups that are square-dancing for fun. They enjoy it very much.

Everybody gets sad from time to time. If you want to know how to cheer someone up, here are some easy steps to help you.
Listen to them. Usually, sad people aren’t really looking for an answer. They just want to be heard and have a chance to express their feelings. Do you know why they’re sad? Pull up a chair, offer a smile, and give them a shoulder to cry on.
After listening, give them advice if they ask for it. After figuring out just what the problem is, tell them you have an idea to help them out. If you don’t, be honest to yourself and them. Take them to a person who has a better fix for the problem than you have.
Give them a gift. Can you remember a time when someone gave you a gift without a duty to do so? How did you feel inside when it happened? Giving a gift to someone can brighten their whole day.
Make them laugh. Jokes and funny stories are always good ice-breakers after you’ve talked about a problem for a long time. Don’t be afraid to make fun of yourself. Your friend will appreciate the humor.
Change their environment. More often than not, our surroundings determine our moods. If you need to get someone out of his sadness, get them out! Having a different set of environment will encourage new and better ways of thinking.
16.What’s the passage mainly about? (no more than 10 words)

Are you aged between 14 and 19 years old? Do you care about your local environment? Would you like to help make the area you live in better, cleaner, safer and friendlier? If your answers are ‘yes’, ‘yes’ and ‘yes’, then read on! A local organization is carrying out a project, giving money to groups of teenagers who want to become active citizens. Here are a few easy things you could do to get started.
Meeting the neighbors. Everybody needs good neighbors. Knock on people’s doors and find out what they would like to improve in your area. Set a date for a meeting and then make some plans together. If you don’t want to go round to their houses, then you could always put a note through their doors.
Neighborhood watch. It is very popular in the UK. If you go away on holiday and leave your house, it’s very nice to know that a neighbor is keeping an eye on it. It’s a good way to make the area you live in safer.
Lending a hand. There are often elderly people living in the neighborhood who may not be able to do the things that you can. Offer to do their shopping once a week, look after their gardens for them or maybe walk their dogs!
No littering. Nobody likes picking up other people’s rubbish, but a clean street can make all the difference. Go out once or twice a week and see what you can find. You never know, one day you might find something valuable!
Just tell us what you want to do. Then we’ll send you more information.

Aesha Ash spent most of her life ballet (芭蕾舞) dancing and even turned it into a career as a member of the New York City Ballet. As much as she loved to dance, she found the weight of her responsibility heavy because she was often the only African American ballerina (芭蕾舞女演员) in her classes and company.
After retiring (退休) from ballet in 2007, Aesha enjoyed the quiet life for more than ten years before she decided to come back to ballet, but in a completely new way. She started The Swan Dreams Project that helps kids in poor areas get into the world of ballet.
Aesha set up a one-week camp that invited kids to not only learn the basics of ballet, but also get an introduction to French (since she says it is “the language of ballet”).
Her first camp was in 2018 in a poor neighborhood in New York. When she arrived she was greeted by dozens of students, most of whom were African Americans. She wanted to help kids who otherwise might not have ever had the chance to live in the world of ballet.
On the final day of camp, after a week of learning, the students put on a final performance for their family and friends. Before the performance, Aesha said she was nervous that it would be less of a performance and more of a mess, since the campers were all between 8 and 11 years old. Much to her surprise, it turned out to be perfect. She said, “When we went out to our first circle and the kids began counting in French and performing the steps they had just learned, my heart melted.”
Aesha continues to do whatever she can to help kids learn ballet. She found a way to turn that seemingly unbearable weight she once carried around into something good for kids, as well as for the world of ballet.

It was the spring of 2016, and 17-year-old Beatrice De Lavalette was waiting for a flight when she got hit by the explosion at Brussels airport. Along with serious burns and a spinal cord (脊髓) injury, De Lavalette lost both legs below the knee.
The event destroyed her dream of dressage (花样骑术). She began riding at age 3 and by 12, she’d taken up dressage. Riding is a passion not only for De Lavalette but for her family as well.
Unsurprisingly, De Laavlette was disappointed as she tried to come to terms (达成协议) with her injuries, She admitted to crying a lot in the hospital until an unexpected visitor turned things around for her. “My mom had figured out a way to get to the hospital parking lot. I went outside in the rain and as I got closer, DeeDee came towards me and put her head against my chest. That moment made me decide that I wasn’t going to give up life. The reason why I’ve gotten to this level of recovery is my horse,” De Lavalette said.
Getting back in the saddle (马鞍) was a tough thing considering her injuries. “I had no muscle, I was just skin and bones, so being back in the saddle with no sense of balance was really uncomfortable.” De Lavalette said. But she was determined to do so as soon as she was able to. It has taken continuous hard work for her to adjust to her body’s new normal.
As her efforts began to pay off, the Paralympics seemed the perfect way to show her hard-earned skills. After making her first appearance as part of the U.S. Para-Dressage team, De Lavalette appeared at the 2020 Paralympics in Tokyo.
De Lavalette says, “I can’t change what happened, but I can succeed in being me. What’s important is that I’m alive and I feel that I will do something great with my life.”

Across America, libraries used to reach out to readers by sending bookmobiles into school parking lots, street corners and rural byways (侧道). Now, those rolling reading rooms are becoming fewer.
One town in northern New England just lost its bookmobile. The Cobleigh Public Library in Lyndonville, Vt., had managed to keep its van (有蓬货车) rolling until about a month ago, when it died.
If you want to hear first-hand what it’s like to go through a whole month without a single visit from the bookmobile, just ask the preschoolers at a daycare centre.
“We miss the bookmobile,” one child says. “Yeah, we miss the bookmobile until it comes here,” says another.
Now that the bookmobile has broken down, librarians have to bring books in their own cars for story hour. Daycare provider Anneka Bickford says it’s not as exciting as having a big, brightly painted van roll into the driveway and open its doors so the kids can choose their own books.
“It’s getting the children involved with what a library is, how to check out books and how to return books,” Bickford says. “They would do programs with the children; singing, dancing, themes—so it’s the excitement of the library that we can’t give to the children.”
It’s not the first bookmobile to bite the dust. Over the years, Vermont’s large number has reduced to three or four. Lyndonville’s head librarian, Cindy Karasinski, says replacement costs have risen quickly.
“New bookmobiles are expensive; just one of them costs $90,000,” she says, “so that seems not the way we are going to go.” Sadly, Karasinksi says, money that used to support bookmobiles has nearly dried up.
However, not everyone hopes the Cobleigh bookmobile gets a second chance. Some in town feel the bookmobile has served its purpose and become a financial burden (财政负担).
36.What’re bookmobiles? (no more than 5 words)
37.What can kids do with the help of bookmobiles in the opinion of Anneka Bickford? (no more than 15 words) .
38.What does the underlined phrase “bite the dust” in Paragraph 7 most probably mean? (no more than 5 words)
39.What leads to the disappearance of bookmobiles? (no more than 10 words)
40.What’s your own opinion on bookmobiles according to the passage? (no more than 25 words)

Katie always felt there had to be something more to life than just partying, buying clothes and driving a cool car. She finally discovered what she was missing out on when she traveled halfway around the world to help poor kids.
When she was 14, she discovered a club at school called Operation Smile, an organization that supports free operation for facially deformed (面部畸形的) kids in developing countries. At that time, she joined Operation Smile just to satisfy her school’s community service requirement.
After working with Operation Smile for a while, she learned different countries have different deformities. The more she learned about what affects kids around the world, the more she wanted to go abroad with Operation Smile.
At 15, she was chosen to go abroad. Before her trip, she attended a weekend “mission (使命) training”. That’s when she was told she’d be going to the Philippines. Although she was excited, one night during training, she broke down in tears. She felt pity for all those unfortunate kids. After her arrival in the Philippines, she met the kids waiting for operation, and they were running around and happy. It seemed normal. Her job was to play with the kids before their operation to help them feel more relaxed. She also went to nearby schools to hand out toothbrushes and teach students how to brush their teeth.
When their operation was over, the kids were always overjoyed, but their parents were blown away. Sometimes they couldn’t even recognize their kids because their appearances had improved so much. They would cry and hug the doctors and nurses and give them presents — they were so grateful.
41.According to the text, what is “Operation Smile”? (no more than 15 words)
42.What was Katie’s original purpose in joining Operation Smile? (no more than 10 words)
43.Why did Katie break down in tears one night during training? (no more than 10 words)

Irregular bedtime may influence healthy brain development of young children, according to a study of intelligence and sleeping habits. Going to bed at a different time each night affected girls more than boys, but both got worse on mental tasks than children who had fixed bedtime, researchers found.
The effect was most striking in three-year-olds, where boys and girls scored lower on reading, maths and spatial skill tests than children of the same age who kept to a more strict schedule. Scientists said the lack of routine might weaken early development by disturbing the body clock, or through sleep deprivation (剥夺), which affects the brain’s ability to remember and learn new information.
“If a child is having irregular bedtime at a young age, they’re not synthesizing all the information around them at that age, and they will get a harder job to do when they are older”, said Amanda Sacker, one of the researchers. Irregular bedtime throughout childhood appeared to have accumulative effect, leading to greater problems later on.
Sacker and her colleagues drew on information in the UK Millennium Cohort Study (MCS), a long-term record of UK children who are now in or approaching their early teenage years. They looked at how the children’s performance were on tests at various ages, and whether bedtime had any impact. Parents who took part in the MCS were asked whether their children went to bed at a regular time on weekdays. Those who answered “always” or “usually” were put in the regular bedtime group in Sacker’s study, while those who answered “sometimes” or “never” were put in the irregular bedtime group.
Sacker suggests that irregular bedtime affects the brain’s ability to store and learn new information. Early child development has deep influences on health and wellbeing across the life course. Therefore, reduced sleep, especially if it occurs at key times in development, could have important impacts on health throughout life.
46.Who are influenced more by irregular bedtime between boys and girls? (no more than 2 words)
47.What does the underlined word “striking” mean? (1 words)
48.According to Amanda Sacker, what is the future influence of early irregular bedtime on adults? (No more than 10 words)
49.In their study, how did the researchers group the participants (参与者)? (no more than 15 words)
50.If you are a parent with a young child, what should you do when your child don’t go to bed at a regular time? (no more than 20 words)

Neil Shuttleworth, an 82-year-old English man, was hardly able to walk because of osteoarthritis (骨关节炎) in his right ankle. Problems began for Neil after he accidentally stepped into an unseen hole in a road surface while on holiday in Cyprus several years ago. Thankfully, he received an artificial ankle made from the materials of bulletproof (防弹的) vests.
Neil, who is a retired printing specialist from Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, paid for the operation himself since it is not currently available on the National Health Service (NHS). When he finally chose to have the operation, he said it was because he had just one strong desire: to walk hand-in-hand with Christine, his wife of 34 years. “Actually, I wasn’t expecting to run a marathon. I would like to walk down the Promenade de la Croisette in Cannes with my wife, but without the pain I had lived with for far too long,” Neil said.
The operation uses polyethylene (聚乙烯) materials that are used to make bulletproof vests, but with extra added vitamin (维生素) E. Since the E-poly is made from strong plastic fibers, it is expected to last much longer than current replacements.
Before he was injured, Neil had always led an active lifestyle which involved running and cycling across the UK and Europe. After he stepped into the hole, which was several inches deep, he said he could not walk more than a few hundred yards as the pain in his ankle was so excruciating. Neil is now one of the first patients in the UK to have such an ankle replacement operation.
After wearing a special walker boot for six weeks following his operation, Neil received a strict six-week treatment that adopts special exercises. He is now able to walk a couple of miles, and he uses a running machine in order to build his fitness levels even further. “The results of Neil’s operation are impressive and there is at least an 80 to 90% chance the ankle replacement will survive for 10 to 15years,” said Professor Nick Harris, who performed the operation.
51.Why couldn’t Neil walk? (no more than 10 words)
52.What did Neil expect to do according to Paragraph 2? (no more than 10 words)
53.What does the underlined word probably mean in Paragraph 4? (1 word)
54.What was expressed in Professor Nick Harris’ words? (1word)
55.What should you do when your family members get sick? Please explain.(no more than 20 words)

In February 2019, our beautiful cat, Xena, suddenly lost the use of her back legs. My husband David and I were shocked and had our hearts in our mouths. We immediately took her straight to the hospital.
Doctors said Xena was badly ill and that she might walk again after surgery (外科手术)! Days after surgery, she got some feelings in her back legs again. Later, we took her home, with medicine and instructions for her care. No one could say if Xena would actually get full use of her back legs again. It was largely up to her own efforts and determination. We booked her hydrotherapy (水疗法). Most cats would panic if they were put in the water, but our little cat surprised everyone. She never panicked and she tried to put up with neck-deep water.
Over the next few weeks, she continued with her hydrotherapy. Soon, she could manage the few steps out into our garden, though she still needed some help to walk properly. Her determination was so impressive. Despite probably being in pain, she really wanted to walk again, play, and do all the things that cats can do.
Some cats would refuse to take their medicine, or become upset after having their legs injured but not our Xena. She seemed to be a model patient. A couple of months later, David and I went on a holiday. To be safe we left Xena at the animal hospital’s “Cat Hotel”. After she came home from the “hotel”, her fur and weight grew back, and she became a healthy, happy cat again.
We had thought she might be damaged forever by all that had happened to her. But this courageous, little cat simply brushed it all off its life and got on with living. She met a big challenge. And in the end, she got the better of it. We should learn from our Xena.
56.Why did the author and her husband feel shocked in February 2019? (no more than 8 words)
57.How did the cat react when she stayed in the water? (no more than 5 words)
58.What change did the cat have after she left the “Cat Hotel”? (no more than 8 words)
59.What does the underlined part in the last paragraph probably mean? (no more than 5 words)
60.What can you learn from the cat’s story? (no more than 20 words)
考答案:
1.Being surrounded by wild animals — feeding them and caring for them. 2.Visitors get a chance not only to see these creatures there, but also to feed them and touch them. 3.The animals are not against the visit and feel ease. 4.It is a place of education as well as conservation. 5.The farm is a place where it's easy to forget the hustle and bustle of the city.
【导语】这是一篇记叙文。主要讲述了主人公Soechting是生活在她家野生动物园的500只动物的人类“母亲”。在农场里,她照顾来自除南极洲以外的各大洲的生物。
1.考查细节理解。根据第二段中“Being surrounded by wild animals — feeding them and caring for them —is all Tiffany Soechting has ever wanted to do all her life. And that is exactly what she does.”(被野生动物包围——喂它们、照顾它们——是蒂芙尼一生想做的事情。这正是她所做的。)可知,Tiffany Soechting想做的是被野生动物包围——然后喂它们、照顾它们。故答案为Being surrounded by wild animals — feeding them and caring for them。
2.考查细节理解。根据第四段中“Visitors get a chance not only to see these creatures there, but also to feed them, And the animals are not against that. For them, people and the special vehicles used on the farm are part of their natural environment. ”When you come here, the animals are walking around freely like they would if they were in their native homeland. And you can touch them,“”(游客不仅有机会在那里看到这些生物,还可以喂它们,动物们也不反对这样做。 Visitors get a chance not only to see these creatures there, but also to feed them and touch them。
3.考查推理判断。根据第四段“Visitors get a chance not only to see these creatures there, but also to feed them, And the animals are not against that. For them, people and the special vehicles used on the farm are part of their natural environment. ”When you come here, the animals are walking around freely like they would if they were in their native homeland. And you can touch them,“ said Soechting. ”For the most part, the majority of them were born and grew up here. But even when we bring them in - like if we bring a new male in the rest of the herd is comfortable with what is going on.“”(游客不仅有机会在那里看到这些生物,还可以喂它们,动物们也不反对这样做。 The animals are not against the visit and feel ease。
4.考查细节理解。根据第二段中“Tourists are not the only people to visit the farm.
