When I was growing up, I had an old neighbor, Dr. Gibbs. He didn’t look like any doctor I’d ever known. He never invited us to play in his yard, but he was a very kind person. When Dr. Gibbs wasn’t saving lives, he was planting trees. He owned a large field and wanted to make it a forest.
The good doctor had some interesting ideas about planting trees. He never watered his new trees. Once I asked why, he said that watering plants spoiled them, and that if you watered them, each baby tree would grow weaker and weaker, so you had to make things difficult for them and pick out the weaker trees early on. He talked about how watering trees made for shallow (浅的)roots, and how trees that weren’t watered had to grow deep roots in search of water under the earth by themselves. Deep roots were very important. So he never watered his trees. He’d planted an oak and, instead of watering it every morning, he’d beat it with a rolled-up newspaper. I asked him why he did that, and he said it was to get the tree’s attention.
Dr. Gibbs died several years after I left home. Every now and then, I walked by his house and looked at the trees that I watched him plant about twenty-five years ago. They’re very big and strong now. I planted some trees a few years back and carried water to them for a whole summer. After two years of caring too much, whenever a cold wind blows in, they shake a lot.
Every night before I go to bed, I check on my two sons. Mostly I pray (祈祷) that their lives will be easy. But lately I’ve been thinking that it’s time to change my prayer. I know my children are going to face difficulties. There’s always a cold wind blowing somewhere, so what we need to do is to pray for roots that reach deep into the brave heart, so when the rains fall and the winds blow, we could face it strongly and won’t be beaten down.
41.We know from the reading, the doctor ______.
A.didn’t know how to plant trees at all
B.had his own ways of planting trees
C.wasn’t good at his own medical job
D.had nothing to do but plant trees
42.When Dr. Gibbs said “... pick out the weaker trees early on.”, he meant that ______.
A.some weak trees would be easily found out at the beginning
B.he would choose the weak trees to water earlier
C.the weak trees would be sent to his patients later
D.he would not plant weak trees so early anymore
43.The passage tells us that the writer ______.
A.beat all his trees with a rolled-up newspaper
B.often water his trees
C.took too much care of his trees
D.didn’t have a large field
44.The writer wants to change his prayer, hoping that ______.
A.his trees will be stronger than Dr. Gibbs'
B.his trees will not be beaten down
C.his sons will be better at planting trees
D.his sons will be able to face difficulties
45.Which can be the best title of the reading?
A.Watering Trees
B.Growing Roots
C.Doctor and his Neighbor

Travel is good for you
Americans think that travel is good for you. Some even think it can help solve one of the country’s worst problems — crime (犯罪).
Crime worries a lot of people. Every year, the number of crimes goes up and up. And many criminals (罪犯) are young. Most of them — 85 percent are boys. They often come from sad homes, with only one parent or no parents at all. There are problems with alcohol and drugs.
There are many young criminals in prison. But prison doesn’t change them — 60 to 70 percent will go back to crime when they come out of prison.
One man, Bob Burton, thought of a new idea. In the old days, young men had to live a difficult life on the road. They learned to be strong and brave, and to help their friends in time of danger. This helped them to grow into men. So Bob Burton started “Vision Quest”.
He takes young criminals on a long, long journey with horses and wagons 3,000 miles through seven states. They are on the road for more than a year.
The young people on Vision Quest (boys and a few girls) all have bad problems. Most of them have already spent time in prison. This is their last chance.
It’s hard work on the road. The day starts before the sun comes up. The boys and girls have to feed the horses. Some of them have never loved anyone before. But they can love their horses. That love can help them to have a new life.
Not all young people on Vision Quest will leave crime behind them. 30 or 40 percent will one day be in prison again. But that’s a lot better then 60 or 70 percent. Bob Burton is right. Travel can be good for you.
Even today, Americans still say, “Go west, young men.”

Diwali(Deepavali)is a festival of lights observed in October or November each year in Canada. During the festival, various community groups, businesses, schools and associations celebrate it in different ways. Some companies have Diwali dinners and some communities organize gatherings that feature firework displays, dances, street lighting, and plays.
Many women wear fine jewelry and silk outfits to celebrate Diwali. Some women and girls use Mehendi, a dye decoration which can last a limited time, on their palms, and then they will finally get colorful hand paintings. Many homes that celebrate Diwali have various types of sweets, salty and spiced food as well as Diwali herbs (香料). Various lights, candles and sparklers are lit inside and outside homes, particularly in courtyards, on Diwali. Diwali is not a nationwide public holiday in Canada but it is a prevalent festival celebrated in many towns and cities. There may be traffic jams and parking places may be full in areas where events are held to celebrate Diwali. Some Indian businesses may close early on Diwali.
Diwali is called the "Festival of Lights" and is celebrated to honor Rama, a hero who once fought and won a battle against the demons(恶魔). In the past, people lit their houses to celebrate his victory over demons(light over darkness). At the same time, every household did careful and complete cleaning at home in advance. It is believed that the goddess of happiness and good fortune, Lakshmi travels around the Earth on this day and enters the house that is pure, clean, and bright.
Diwali celebrations may vary in different communities but its spiritual meaning is generally "the awareness of the inner light". As the word “Deepavali” means “a row or cluster of light”, the festival symbolizes the victory of righteousness and the lifting of spiritual darkness.

It was the spring of 2016, and 17-year-old Beatrice De Lavalette was waiting for a flight when she got hit by the explosion at Brussels airport. Along with serious burns and a spinal cord (脊髓) injury, De Lavalette lost both legs below the knee.
The event destroyed her dream of dressage She began riding at age 3 and by 12, she’d taken up dressage. Riding is a passion not only for De Lavalette but for her family as well.
Unsurprisingly, De Laavlette was disappointed as she tried to come to terms (达成协议) with her injuries, She admitted to crying a lot in the hospital until an unexpected visitor turned things around for her. “My mom had figured out a way to get to the hospital parking lot. I went outside in the rain and as I got closer, DeeDee came towards me and put her head against my chest. That moment made me decide that I wasn’t going to give up life. The reason why I’ve gotten to this level of recovery is my horse,” De Lavalette said.
Getting back in the saddle (马鞍) was a tough thing considering her injuries. “I had no muscle, I was just skin and bones, so being back in the saddle with no sense of balance was really uncomfortable.” De Lavalette said. But she was determined to do so as soon as she was able to. It has taken continuous hard work for her to adjust to her body’s new normal.
As her efforts began to pay off, the Paralympics seemed the perfect way to show her hard-earned skills. After making her first appearance as part of the U.S. Para-Dressage team, De Lavalette appeared at the 2020 Paralympics in Tokyo.
De Lavalette says, “I can’t change what happened, but I can succeed in being me. What’s important is that I’m alive and I feel that I will do something great with my life.”
56.What happened to De Lavalette when she waited at Brussels airport? (no more than 10 words)
57.Who played an important role in De Lavalette’s recovery? (no more than 5 words)
58.What does the underlined word in Paragraph 4 mean? (1 word)
59.What’s the main idea of Paragraph 5? (no more than 15 words)

1.A
A. forget it 没关系;别介意;B. be careful 小心;C. that's right 不错;就是这样;D. it's terrible 太可怕了。
A.demand 要求;B.devote 奉献;致力于;C.decorate装饰; D.defend防卫;短语devote...to...,意为“把......贡献给/奉献给...”,结合句中 the little strength to helping others,可知,此处指贡献一点力量去帮助别人。故选B。
6.C
7.A
A. effect; effort影响;努力;B. effort; effect努力;影响;C. creativity; punishment创造力;惩罚;D. punishment; creativity惩罚;创造力。分析句子可知,此处为固定短语have an effect on sb.,意为“对… make efforts to do sth. 故选A。
8.B
A.turn into 变成;B.live up to符合;C.break down 出故障;D.keep in touch with保持联系。

A. Another time.下次;B. It’s up to you. How come? Help yourself. 根据“If you think it isn’t of much use, you may throw them out.”可知,“It’s up to you.
A. consisted of由…… 组成(现在分词);D. to be consist of由……
A.quality品质; B.amount 数量;C.quotation 引用;D.aspect方面。
16.D 17.B 18.A 19.C 20.A 21.C 22.D 23.B 24.A 25.C 26.C 27.D 28.A 29.B 30.C 31.D 32.A 33.D 34.C 35.A

根据第二段“He never watered his new trees. Once I asked why, he said that watering plants spoiled them, and that if you watered them, each baby tree would grow weaker and weaker, so you had to make things difficult for them (他从不给他的新树浇水。 所以你必须做一些让他们困难的事)”及“He talked about how watering trees made for shallow (浅的) roots, and how trees that weren’t watered had to grow deep roots in search of water under the earth by themselves. 由此推知,pick out the weaker trees early on表示“一些虚弱的树木在开始时很容易被发现”。故选A。
根据第三段“I planted some trees a few years back and carried water to them for a whole summer. After two years of caring too much, whenever a cold wind blows in, they shake a lot.

根据第二段“Deep roots were very important. (深根是非常重要的)”及最后一段“But lately I’ve been thinking that it’s time to change my prayer. I know my children are going to face difficulties.

There are problems with alcohol and drugs.
根据第四段“One man, Bob Burton, thought of a new idea. In the old days, young men had to live a difficult life on the road. They learned to be strong and brave, and to help their friends in time of danger. This helped them to grow into men. So Bob Burton started “Vision Quest”. 因此,Bob Burton开办了“Vision Quest”)”及第六段“The young people on Vision Quest (boys and a few girls) all have bad problems. Most of them have already spent time in prison. This is their last chance.

根据第一段中“During the festival, various community groups, businesses, schools and associations celebrate it in different ways. 以及第二段中“Diwali is not a nationwide public holiday in Canada but it is a prevalent festival celebrated in many towns and cities.
根据第二段中划线词句前一句“Various lights, candles and sparklers are lit inside and outside homes, particularly in courtyards, on Diwali.( 在排灯节上,各种各样的灯、蜡烛和火花在室内外被点燃,特别是在庭院里。)”可知,排灯节时,到处都是灯火,再根据划线词句“Diwali is not a nationwide public holiday in Canada but it is a prevalent festival celebrated in many towns and cities.
根据第三段中“At the same time, every household did careful and complete cleaning at home in advance. It is believed that the goddess of happiness and good fortune, Lakshmi travels around the Earth on this day and enters the house that is pure, clean, and bright.(与此同时,家家户户都提前在家里做了细致彻底的大扫除。
根据最后一段中“As the word ‘Deepavali’ means ‘a row or cluster of light’, the festival symbolizes the victory of righteousness and the lifting of spiritual darkness.
通读全文,根据第一段中“Diwali(Deepavali)is a festival of lights observed in October or November each year in Canada.

根据文章第一段“It was the spring of 2016, and 17-year-old Beatrice De Lavalette was waiting for a flight when she got hit by the explosion at Brussels airport. Along with serious burns and a spinal cord injury, De Lavalette lost both legs below the knee.(那是2016年的春天,17岁的比阿特丽斯·德·拉瓦莱特在布鲁塞尔机场等待航班时被爆炸击中。 She got hit by the explosion and lost both legs./She met with the explosion and was injured seriously.
根据文章第三段““My mom had figured out a way to get to the hospital parking lot. I went outside in the rain and as I got closer, DeeDee came towards me and put her head against my chest. That moment made me decide that I wasn’t going to give up life. The reason why I’ve gotten to this level of recovery is my horse,” De Lavalette said.(“我妈妈找到了一条去医院停车场的路。 Her horse (DeeDee).
根据文章第四段“Getting back in the saddle was a tough thing considering her injuries. “I had no muscle, I was just skin and bones, so being back in the saddle with no sense of balance was really uncomfortable.” 以及“It has taken continuous hard work for her to adjust to her body’s new normal.(她经过不断的努力才适应身体的新常态。)” Difficult/Hard.
根据文章第五段“As her efforts began to pay off, the Paralympics seemed the perfect way to show her hard-earned skills. After making her first appearance as part of the U.S. Para-Dressage team, De Lavalette appeared at the 2020 Paralympics in Tokyo.(当她的努力开始有了回报时,残奥会似乎是她展示来之不易技能的完美方式。 She took part in the Paralympics and her efforts paid off.
根据文章最后一段“De Lavalette says, “I can’t change what happened, but I can succeed in being me. What’s important is that I’m alive and I feel that I will do something great with my life.”(De Lavalette说:“我不能改变已经发生的事情,但我可以成功地做我自己。 Attitude makes a difference. Because I think although we can’t change what happened, we can still achieve our dreams with positive attitude.
