Moving to a foreign country is an amazing, life-changing experience. It's an opportunity to meet new people, make yourself completely involved in a different culture and possibly learn another language. However, before embarking on such an adventure, there are some practical decisions that need to be made. One such decision is choosing where to live.
For me, choosing to live with a French family was the best choice I made, and here is why.
Firstly, a family can show you around the city or town and help you settle in, stopping you from feeling lonely. When you're in a new environment with people you don't know and who are speaking a language you're still not fluent in, you might feel lost, tired and homesick—I know I did. However, my host family were wonderful and welcoming;they showed me which buses to take to get to work, cooked dinner for me so we could eat together, and took me with them on trips to the beach, the theatre and even a bullring. These were great opportunities to experience French culture and build relationships, which in turn helped me feel at home and welcome.
Moreover, living with French people has been beneficial to helping me improve my language skills. Being constantly exposed to authentic French conversation has allowed me to learn new phrases, widen my vocabulary and even improve my accent. My host family are happy to answer my questions and correct me when I say things wrong, which makes me a better and more confident French speaker.
Finally, the experience of living abroad is one that you will remember forever, and perhaps the friendships—like the memories—will also last. Your host family might become your friends for life. You might return for their birthdays, weddings, holidays, and many more things. I sincerely hope to remain in contact with my host family long after I leave France because when I was away from my friends and loved ones, they welcomed me and made me part of their family.

Last year, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that 55million people in the U. S. are “gig workers” which are more than 35 percent of the U. S. workforce. That number is projected to jump to 43 percent by 2020.
People are drawn to gig work(零工)because it brings in a little extra income without a major time commitment. And recent technologies like Skype, Slack, and Dropbox have made the gig life a reality, giving you maximum freedom, an ideal worklife balance, and the chance to pursue your passions.
If you're thinking of joining the gig economy it's never been easier. One of the great things about the gig economy is that you don't have a boss breathing down your neck. As a freelancer, you no longer have to cater to a company culture or work schedule that might cause physical or emotional stress.Instead, you get to choose the type of work you do and who you work with. But this degree of freedom requires a corresponding amount of discipline. With no boss to make sure you're on task, it's all on you.
A lot of gig workers start their careers by hopping on a project because the employer is desperate and in need of help. On the employer's end,it's tough to take on people for higher management positions when the pool of talent is full of gig workers who haven't been given an opportunity to improve their skills. Businesses have to evolve to learn how to account for an influx(涌入)of temporary workers. It is harder for gig workers to become skilled and get promoted.
The workforce is becoming more advanced and educated by the day. You have to keep learning and keep up with industry trends to maintain a competitive edge. This is true even for people in traditional office settings, but it's critical if you're your own boss.
8.What made the gig life a reality?
A.An ideal worklife balance.
B.New technologies.
C.A little extra money.
D.Maximum freedom.
9.What does the underlined phrase “breathing down your neck” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Making you unable to breathe freely.
B.Standing very close behind you.
C.Threatening you by saying something.
D.Monitoring you closely.
10.What can we infer from Paragraph 4?
A.Employers should invest in training the temporary workers.
B.Gig workers start their jobs out of passion.
C.It's hard for employers to employ people for higher positions.
D.It's hard for gig workers to develop skills.
11.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.The Strengths and Weaknesses of the Gig Economy
B.The Challenges of the Gig Economy
C.The Increase of the Gig Economy
D.The Reasons for the Gig Economy
D
For Damen Fletcher, chess is much more than a game. This inspiring California man uses chess to coach young people from some of the most disadvantaged neighborhoods in Southern California and beyond to develop self-confidence, and find purpose in their lives.
Why does Fletcher choose chess to help kids and teens make the right moves in life? The answer lies in his own life story. Fletcher, who learned to play this game of strategic skill at the age of 13, grew up in Compton, California. After heading farther to college, he returned home to find his friends struggling. As he explains; "Some of them had fallen into prison. Homeless and unemployed... and I just wondered,‘Why did I have such a different outcome? 'And it was chess.”
So he set about building his own organization“Train of Thought”to help inner city kids find their own king or queen and life goals by learning problem solving, teamwork, and forward planning skills at an early age through chess, while enjoying themselves.
Fletcher highlights in an interview with Fox News that every game of chess is 75 to 100 moves, and every single move that your opponent makes presents a new problem for you to solve, so chess is a game in which the weak can turn out stronger. As Paige Stevenson, a 7th grader and already a keen chess player thanks to Fletcher's enthusiasm, tells the channel,“He has taught me not to give up because you can move and find a way out instead of losing.”
His organization has partnered with more than 100 schools to date and has taught more than50 ,000 students the game of Kings in California, with plans to expand in the US. It is an old proverb that children learn from play, and this is something that Fletcher is keen to stress. And as his website also explains : " If you think chess is just a game, you're not playing it right.”
12. What do we know about Damen Fletcher?
A. He had a rough childhood. B. He likes nothing but chess.
C. He is a positive chess master. D. He is a famous social activist.
13. What inspired Fletcher to found “Train of Thought”?
A. The value of chess. B. The college education.
c. His pursuit for success. D. His friends’ requirement.
14. Why did the author mention Paige Stevenson in paragraph 4?
A. To compare different ideas.
B. To show Paige's enthusiasm.
C. To provide other information.
D. To support Fletcher's opinion.
15. What can be inferred about the game of Kings from the text?
A. It can help kids grow up happily.
B. It may get kids addicted to chess.
C. It will become a required course.
D. It is active in schools in the world.

More than the challenge of fitting into a new culture, there are many benefits that a student can get with an exchange program. These benefits include:
Diverse academic opportunities. It’s not actually the travel that students would love to study abroad. 1 Instead, it will be an offering of diverse opportunities for the student. For example, the student will be able to experience the differences of teaching methods, educational formats and academic program offerings.
2 Studying in another country opens the student to different surroundings, which makes the student know about the country’s customs, people and regions, Knowing other culture also teaches the student how to be open-minded.
Personality development. 3 Thus, the student needs to make decisions on his or her own and suffer the consequences or enjoy the fruits of that decision. With this, the student is taught how real life is, what it means to be responsible, and how being resourceful can help in his or her survival. It’s no wonder that most students who returned after the exchange program were seen with significant improvement on their personal development. 4
So, why not let your child have the benefits of a student exchange program? Exchange programs or study-abroad programs are great investments for the student. 5 Just imagine, by transforming students in a foreign country the society is starting to build a new blood of more mature people who might just be able to create a better tomorrow for the generations to come.
A. Improved protection of social rights.
B. Better awareness of cultural differences.
C. More importantly, it is helpful for the improvement of the society.
D. Most of them are more confident and have better decision-making skills.
E. The hosting school can also benefit by making a student’s dream come true.
F. Although students really love traveling, studying is not a travel-fun activity at all times.
G. Being an exchange student often means living far away from home and parental guidance.
