And that's extraordinary. I was driving down Interstate 81, returning from a family reunion in the mountains, when the traffic slammed to a halt. There had been a very serious accident just in front of us.My sister, who is great in a crisis, got out of the car and ran forward while I dug the firstaid kit out of the back and followed. It turned out that a pickup (轻型货车) had crossed the median and hit headon into a Kia sedan on our side of the highway. The Kia driver was killed almost instantly, but the pickup driver remained alive. He was partially under his overturned truck. When I got there, someone was already giving first aid to the injured, along with a pair of friends. A group of bystanders came together to lift the truck enough to get the driver out from under it, and then, as the highway police arrived, started at the officers' request to clear the large bits of debris (碎片) from the road.Lots of people jumped to help, and after the heavy pieces were gone, a couple of folks produced brooms from somewhere and began sweeping the road. The road clearing, however, wasn't to reopen things for traffic, but to enable a medical helicopter could land right next to the wreck. It arrived and soon the injured pickup driver was being flown to a nearby hospital.Accidents like this happen anywhere, which are usually tragic for their victims, so I had an ordinary experience but one that seemed extraordinary in its own way. When it happened, everyone around rushed forward to help immediately. And more people kept drifting up to help from further away, bringing firstaid kits, bottled water, blankets, or whatever they had that looked helpful. The media and officers today only focus on divisions and wounds. But what I witnessed after a terrible traffic accident shows we're better than that.4What happened to the author last week?AHis car hit headon into a Kia sedan.BHe witnessed a terrible traffic accident.CHe and his sister had a serious accident.DHe saved an injured driver with first aid.5How did the author feel about the accident at first?AIt was not a fatal car crash.BIt was an ordinary accident.CIt would draw great attention.DThe victim was lucky to be saved.6What was extraordinary in the accident according to the author?AThe scene of the terrible car crash.BThe awful suffering of the victims.CThe kind help from everyone on the spot.DThe media's response to the accident.7What is the author's main purpose in writing the text?ATo discuss the meaning of our life.BTo introduce an accident to the readers.CTo warn people to be careful while driving.DTo share the kindness he witnessed. C This season, the bushfires in Australia have burned more than 12. 35 million acres of land. At least 25 people have been killed and 2, 000 homes have been destroyed. According to the BBC, this is the most casualties(伤亡) from wildfires in the country since 2009. The University of Sydney estimates that 480 million animals have died in South Wales alone. Zeke Hausfather, an energy system analyst and climate researcher at Berkeley Earth, said warmer temperatures and extreme weather have made Australia more susceptible to fires and increased the length of the fire season. “The drier conditions combined with record high temperatures in 2019 created main conditions for the disastrous fires. Australia’s fires were worsened by the combination of those two. 2019 was the perfect storm for being the warmest year on record for Australia and the driest year on record for Australia, ” Hausfather added on Friday.  Kevin Trenberth, a senior scientist at the US National Center for Atmospheric Research, said warmer ocean temperatures are also contributed to more variable weather around the world. Trenberth believes that global warming contributed to energy imbalances and hot spots in the oceans, which can create a wave in the atmosphere that locks weather patterns in places, causing longer rain events in Indonesia, for example, and at the same time contributing to drought in Australia. He said that once an area experiences drought conditions for two months or more, it increases the risk of fires catching and spreading. Those changing weather patterns due to global warming make drought events longer. Climate experts stress that climate change is not the only factor in the severity of wildfires. How land is managed can also impact the amount of fuel available for fires. Practices like controlled burns and other factors can impact the risk to people and property, such as warning systems and the type of development in a given area. Changing those policies has great potential to limit future damage from wildfires along with changes to how fire management resources are dispatched(派遣). 8. What do the numbers in Paragraph 1 show? A. The causes of Australian fires. B. The results of Australian fires. C. The damaged areas of Australian fires. D. The property destruction of Australian fires. 9. Which of the following best explains “more susceptible to” underlined in the second paragraph? A. Quick to adapt to.    B. Sure to cause. C. Sensitive to.      D. Easy to be protected from. 10. What can we infer from Trenberth’s research? A. Global warming is the root cause of the bushfires. B. Longer dry weather contributes to global warming. C. Warmer ocean temperatures promote fires spreading. D. The imbalanced energy leads to the temperature rising. 11. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph? A. To stress the effects of Australian fires. B. To show the methods for controlling burns. C. To predict the seriousness of Australian fires. D. To provide some advice about reducing damage.  DFor centuries, people have tried to invent a perfect universal written language and Chinese has actually been considered before. Francis Bacon used to think that a language like Chinese and its writing system would have qualified. Chinese doesn’t use an alphabet based on sounds, but symbols indicating meaning. Chinese character has its special relationship between the sign and what it symbolized. Some of them also look like what they represent. For example, a mountain may look just like a mountain with a peak in the middle. And fire resembles some blazing (燃烧的) logs. When you put them together and you get volcano. Isn’t that amazing? While some of them look like what they represent, most of them really don’t. In fact, some of them are incredibly complicated. For instance, “Biang” is the name of a kind of noodle, which has 57 strokes (笔画)It is very hard for people to pronounce or recognize this character, let alone writing it out correctly. Chinese is so complicated that since the 1950s, a simplified system of characters has been used in the mainland of China. But Chinese characters often represent whole works, and there are a lot of them. In the Chinese dictionary there are around sixty four thousand characters. So Chinese characters might not become a universal writing system soon. The trouble is not just inventing one, but getting people to use it. It wouldn’t be easy for the whole world to agree on the same set of meanings. After all, language needs a cultural context. You cannot really just use a universal language as you like. 12What can we learn from Francis Bacon?AHe believed that Chinese writing system was perfect. BHe managed to invent a universal written language. CHe recommended Chinese to use alphabets based on sounds. DHe thought written Chinese language could be used globally. 13How does the author explain the characteristic of Chinese character?ABy analyzing structures of toys. BBy comparing concepts. CBy giving examples. DBy collecting data. 14Why do Chinese people use a simplified system of Chinese characters?AIt is hard to pronounce Chinese characters. BIt is difficult to recognize or write Chinese characters. CIt is fashionable to use simplified Chinese characters. DIt is complicated to look up Chinese characters in the dictionaries. 15What is the passage mainly about?AHow to write simplified Chinese characters. BWhy people need a universal written language. CChinese is a perfect universal written language. DWhether Chinese are suitable to be a world language.   第二节(5小题;每小题2.5分, 满分12.5)阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。The Basic Survival Skills Learning survival skills is an ongoing process that will last for your entire life.Because each situation has its particular requirements, there is always more to learn and experience.   16   FireFire provides warmth, light, and comfort, and keeps away the creatures. I spotted an empty place and walked there. Just as I put my tray down, I felt a bump against my hip. The tray dropped on the table and the soup spilt all over my camp shirt and jeans. “Can't you look where you are going, you clumsy fool” I shouted, glaring at the troublemaker, a tall boy with wild hair.“Sorry! Can't help laughing! You look so funny” said the boy, bending over with laughter. I was too annoyed to respond. The next morning, the same was spotted by the Camp Commandant before he could slide into place. As a punishment for being late, he was made to do a hundred pushups. As I walked past him later, I let out a loud laugh, saying “Sorry. I can't help laughing. You look so funny.”So the war of words continued in the following three days with the wildhaired boy, whose name, I found out, was Ben.A mountain hike marked the last day of the camp. On the way back, I found myself left far behind my team. Soon, they were out of sight. The camp site was a long way away and I was getting anxious as evening fell. I risked taking a shortcut clung to the mountain side, but suddenly, I tripped off the path and slid right down the slope.Fortunately, my fall was stopped by a bunch of bamboo. I saw I was about ten meters below the track. There was no way I could climb up the slope as evidently I had my ankle broken. After making several vain attempts, I waited hopelessly. It got dark and I became afraid.Paragraph 1Then, I saw a faint light, and heard a voice calling out my name.                                                                      Paragraph 2The next day, as we were boarding the buses which would take us back to our own homes,
