The dazzling beauty of abandoned cinemas

Old and historical cinemas are all around us and yet so unnoticed. A new photobook reveals their often overlooked beauty.

    Loew’s Palace Theatre, Bridgeport, Connecticut

Originally opened as the Poli’s Palace Theatre in 1922 by architect Thomas W. Lamb as one of a double theatre complex along with the nearby Poli’s Majestic Theatre. In 1934, both theatres were taken over by Loew’s and operated as film theatres. In the late 1970s, an attempt to turn the building into a Christian Revival Centre never came to fruition. The theatre is presently vacant and awaiting restoration.

    Metropolitan Opera House, Philadelphia

Originally founded as the Philadelphia Opera House in 1908, it was designed by local architect William H. McElfatrick, who was in charge of the design of 40 theatres in his career. The Philadelphia Opera House was designed for opera impresario Oscar Hammerstein as his ninth opera house. In 1910, it was sold to the Metropolitan Opera of New York City and was renamed the Met. Through the 1920s, it showed silent films in addition to hosting various opera companies. In the late 1930s, it became a ballroom, and in the 1940s a sports area for basketball, wrestling, and boxing events. It finally closed in 1954 and was turned into a church.

    Robin’s Theatre, Warren, Ohio

Opened in 1923, it had 1,500 seats, and was designed by architects I. J. Goldston and Detroit-based CHoward Crane. It was operated by The Robins Theatre Enterprises Co. , a local company founded by Daniel Robins, who was an early partner of Albert Warner of Warner Bros. It closed in 1974 and was vacant until 2018, when it was renovated and reopened as a multipurpose venue in 2020.

    APoli’s Palace Theatre.

Gregory Talley used to sleep in a park or under a bridge. The 50-year-old has been homeless for more than 10 years.

“It is hard. It’s hard to live homeless. You filled every day trying to find cut where you are going to get something to eat. If I hadn’t found wonderful Fairfax County Kennedy Shelter, I wouldn’t know where I would be by now. I might be dead,” Talley said.

The Kennedy Shelter is one of the facilities New Hope Housing provides for homeless people.

Pam Micheli has devoted her life to making the lives of this vulnerable(易受伤的)population better as executive director of the non-profit organization.

“I went to Africa in 1985. And I saw a huge amount of poverty, but I saw so much hope. And I decided that I should try to do something that would bring hope to people,” Michell said.

When Michell began working with New Hope Housing 25 years ago, its three shelters had about 80 beds. Now, it has 350 beds and serves about 1,500 homeless people every year. She has expanded the program beyond just providing beds for the night.

“We do outreach(拓展), we do prevention, we do permanent housing. We do transitional housing. We have an education program with all sorts of different things to move people to end their homelessness,” she said, “Our Out of Poverty program is not just about money. It’s about you could be spiritually poor, you could be relationship poor ... you could be educationally poor. So it is focusing on how you get out of this poverty that has brought you to being homeless. The program tries to teach the shelter residents self-reliance(自立)and work values, and includes courses on planning and personal responsibility.

“I learned I still have opportunities to change it and I can change it,” said shelter resident Lewis Webster. “It is just about going forth in doing necessary work to do it. I mean if you really want better, you would do better and that’s the frame of mind of me now.”

    2022·湖北·高二枣阳一中校联考期中)

David Bennett became the first person to have a heart transplanted successfully into him from a pig. In press material issued three days after the operation, the University of Maryland confirmed Mr Bennett was doing well, and was capable of breathing on his own. While he continues to rely on artificial support to pump blood around his body, the team behind the surgery, led by Bartley Griffith, plan gradually to reduce its use.

This operation is a milestone for xenotransplantation — the transfer of organs from other species to human patients. Doctors say the next few weeks will be a critical to see how Bennett does with the new organ and whether his body begins to reject it.

The operation itself received exceptional authorization from America’s Food and Drug Administration under a provision which lets doctors use experimental treatments as a matter of last resort. Prior to the operation, Mr. Bennett was diagnosed with terminal heart disease, but was judged too ill to qualify for a human transplant. Having spent months in a hospital bed with no improvement to his condition, he gave his agreement to the surgery.

Bennett released a statement through the medical center the day before the operation. In it, he said: “It was either die or do this transplant. I want to live. I know it’s a shot in the dark, but it’s my last choice.”

Past attempts at pig-to-human transplants have failed because of genetic differences that caused organ rejection. To reduce the risk of that happening in this case, scientists removed several genes from the donor pig that are linked with organ rejection. They also removed another gene from the animal in an effort to prevent too much growth of pig heart tissue.

Bennett’s genetically modified pig heart was provided by Revivicor, a regenerative medicine company based in Blacksburg, Virginia. On the morning of the surgery, the transplant team removed the pig’s heart and placed it into a special device to keep it running until the operation.

8Why did Bennett adopt a pig heart transplant?

AGenetic differences may cause organ rejection.

BHe failed to get approval from America’s Food and Drug Administration.

CHe couldn’t manage to find a suitable human heart.

DHis heart disease was too severe to receive a human transplant.

9What’s the meaning of the underlined phrase “a shot in the dark” in Paragraph4?

AA possibility that shoots oneself in the evening.

BA belief that all things will go smoothly.

CA guess that is based on little evidence or information.

    DA challenge someone must face.

10How do scientists prevent the organ rejection?

ABy taking away some of unfavorable genes.

BBy promoting the growth of pig heart issue.

CBy placing the pig’s heart into a special device.

DBy connecting to a heart-lung machine until the operation.

11What’s the best title for the text?

ABennett’s New Life with a Pig Heart

    BFirst Successful Pig-to-Human Transplant

CA New Progress in Life-Saving Transplants

    DPast Attempts at Pig-to-Human Transplants

2022·福建厦门·高二福建省厦门第六中学校考期中)“Your mind is a garden; your thoughts are the seeds. The harvest can either be flowers or weeds,” William Wordsworth wrote. In the above quote, William suggests that the process of gardening mirrors human life. Depending on what we “plant” in our lives, we bloom (生长茂盛) or don’t. Before you start to work in your garden, it’s necessary to have a vision for it. Thinking of what you want to grow in your garden and how to lay it out is a good first step in making your vision a fruitful reality. In life, you should consider what you want to create and what you want to achieve, because your mind-garden is like the white paper and the possibilities are endless.

Regardless of what you choose to plant, poor soil isn’t suitable for growth. This is why gardeners take the time and energy to upgrade the soil before planting. So, creating the right soil is important to the realization of your goals and dreams. Fortunately, there are countless ways to make your personal bedrock better. Getting an education is one of the most effective ways, which can help you enrich your life’s soil.

You don’t have to be an enthusiastic gardener to understand the meaning of “You reap(收获) what you sow.” When a gardener wants tomatoes, they just need to plant tomato seeds. It’s a very clear act that produces an expected result. Each of us has the power to decide which “life seeds” to plant. For example, if you plant ill seeds, it's likely that you’ll experience pain in return. Contrarily, if you plant seeds of kindness and understanding, your life will bloom with happiness and love.

A gardener’s truly arduous work begins after the seeds are in the ground because a garden requires a lot of care and attention. Regular watering and weeding are required for a healthy garden. So, to ensure your dreams take root, you should be devoted, aware, and present. After countless hours and energy spent, the crops have grown well and are finally ready to be harvested.

12What is important before gardeners break ground in their gardens?

    AReceiving some training in planting.

BDrawing up a good plan for their gardens.

CHaving the courage to accept the worst outcome.

DDoing research on the common local garden plants.

13What is compared to getting education by the author?

AImproving the condition of the soil. BGrowing your most favorable plants.

CTaking care of the plants in your garden. DSelecting proper goals in gardening work.

14What does the author want to express in Paragraph 3?

AYour quality of life depends on your positive action.

BYour experience can help you understand plants better.

CYour choice of soil is an important part in your gardening.

DYour knowledge of planting will make you a successful gardener.

15What does the underlined word “arduous” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

    ABeneficial BCreative CBoring. DTough

Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn’t help crying sadly when she thought of the scolding (责骂) from her mother. Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt hungry and wished for something to eat, but it was impossible for her, since she had nothing with her. She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave.

The seller noticed the young girl and asked “Hey, do you want to have the noodles?”

“Oh, yes ... but I don’t have money on me ...” she replied.

“That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,” said the man, “come in.”

The seller brought her a bowl of tasty noodles. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently.

“What is it?” asked the man kindly.

“I was just touched by your kindness!” said Jenny as she wiped her tears, “Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother, drove me out of the house. She is so merciless compared to a stranger!”

Hearing the words, the seller smiled “I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your gratitude to her?”

Jenny sat there, speechless, she remembered mother’s familiar face. “Why did I not think of that? I appreciated a bowl of noodles from a stranger, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me.”

On the way home, Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

    注意:
