Known today as “Father of the Blood Bank”, Dr. Charles Drew was a key pioneer in developing ways to store and transport blood.
In 1950, at age 45, Drew suffered serious injuries in a car crash in North Carolina. Surgeons at a nearby hospital were unable to save him. His daughter, Charlene Jarvis, was just 8 years old when her father died. Charlene, now 80, and her son Ernest Jarvis, 59, remembered Drew’s legacy (遗产) and his lifelong “drive for excellence” in a recent interview.
Ernest asked his mother how much she knew about the work her father was doing when she was growing up. “I must say that I didn’t know a lot about what my father was doing until he died,” said Charlene. She was in school on the day of her dad’s funeral. “My mother felt that it was better that we didn’t attend the funeral,” she said. Yet Charlene bore witness to how much respect other people had for her father. “When the funeral procession left, it went by my school,” she said. “I saw the cars going by and the cars went by, and they went by. And I was simply astonished that there were so many people who respected him.”
Dr. Drew was appointed director of the American Red Cross’s first blood bank in 1941, which oversaw blood for use by the US Army and Navy. He went on the following year to work at Freedmen’s Hospital in Washington, D.C. — now known as Howard University Hospital — as chief of surgery and as a professor of medicine. Drew was also a famous teaching surgeon who trained many surgeons in his time.
“It’s a great thing to think that he has done so much in such a little bit of time,” Charlene said. “I think I call him Dr. Drew because it is respectful. A man of the ages is not someone who is called ‘Daddy’.”
Charlene, following in her father’s scientific footsteps, became a neuroscientist (神经学家). “Drew’s drive for excellence was something that all of us felt,” she said. Ernest told his mum that he will pass on their conversations about his grandfather’s legacy to his children so that they can tell their children. They will all know that Dr. Drew blazed a path for them.
24. What can we learn from Charlene Jarvis’s description in paragraph 3?
A. The traffic conditions were terrible then.
B. Her father was deeply loved by people.
C. She hoped young people could learn from her father.
D. She regretted about missing her father’s funeral.
25. What does the underlined word “blazed” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Developed. B. Followed. C. Left. D. Took.
26. What do we know about Dr. Charles Drew?
A. He wasn’t widely recognized until recently.
B. He was killed because of serious bleeding.
C. His son was brought up by Charlene Jarvis.
D. His family were greatly influenced by him.
27. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. The Brief History of Blood Banking
B. The Grand Funeral of Charles Drew
C. The Deeds and Influences of Charles Drew
D. The Family Ties and Work of Charles Drew

Do you have frightening dreams while sleeping? According to an email interview by clinical psychologist and sleep expert Dr. Michael Breus, roughly 5 percent of the general population has at least one bad dream per week. Nightmares typically happen during REM sleep, during the middle and later parts of the night.
There is no exact explanation for nightmares, but Breus says it’s possible that they help the brain practise, prepare for and even anticipate difficult or dangerous experiences in waking life. Of course, it’s possible that nightmares, like dreams in general, don’t have a primary function — that they’re a by-product of other activities in the body. But most sleep scientists think that dreams and nightmares exist for some purposes.
One study found the most common nightmare was falling, followed by dreams of being chased, feeling lost, and feeling trapped. Then why do nightmares happen?
“Certain circumstances and characteristics make some people more likely to have nightmares than others,” says sleep medicine specialist Dr. Barry Krakow. He thinks people who’ve been traumatized (使受精神创伤) are certainly at a higher risk of nightmares. Examples are offered of those who have suffered criminal attacks, or who have been in life-threatening accidents. People with some degree of sensitivity in their biological make-up are also more likely to have bad dreams, so they’re more common in people who suffer from anxiety or depression, or who use excess drugs or alcohol.
The traditional belief often has it that nightmares are the result of eating too much rich food before bedtime, but it is still uncertain whether this is true. One study from 2015 did find a link between eating dairy or hot foods before bedtime and having disturbing dreams, but the study authors noted that this couldn’t be proven definitely because the data was self-reported and there were a lot of other factors to consider.
However, research in recent decades has shown that people who suffer from sleep disorders are also more likely to have nightmares.
28. What may Dr. Breus agree with about nightmares?
A. They happen for certain purposes.
B. They are similar to daydreams.
C. They possibly help predict future events.
D. They come true once in a while.
29. Who does Dr. Krakow think tends to suffer nightmares?
A. John who often stays up late. B. Peter who has had terrible experiences.
C. Jack who is sensitive to alcohol. D. Paul who sleeps soundly at night.
30. How does the traditional belief explain nightmares?
A. They are often caused by irregular bedtimes.
B. They are based on disturbing life experiences.
C. They are the consequence of negative feelings.
D. They are related to what is taken before bedtime.
31. From which section of a website is the text probably taken?
A. Mental health. B. Life experiences.
C. Eating habits. D. Popular culture.

The latest TikTok trend has us listening to brown noise. According to TikTok, this has many benefits including helping you relax and quickly fall into a deep sleep. Getting less sleep and insomnia (失眠) are common. So there is no wonder many people are looking for ways to improve their sleep.
But can brown noise help? If so, how? And what is brown noise anyway? Is it like white noise or pink noise? These are fixed noises with the smallest sound variation, highs, lows, and changing speeds, compared with sounds such as music or someone reading aloud. What differs brown noise from white or pink is the frequency. White noise describes sound spread evenly across frequencies. It includes low, mid-range, and high frequencies, and sounds like radio static (静电). Pink noise has more low-frequency sounds and less high-frequency sounds. It is lower and deeper than white noise, similar to steady rainfall. Brown noise contains lower frequencies than both white and pink noise. It sounds deeper, similar to a rushing river or rough surf.
Researchers have not specifically examined the influence of brown noise on sleep. However, there is some limited science about the influence of white or pink noise. Some studies suggest white noise and pink noise help us fall asleep quicker and improve sleep quality, but the credibility of science is low. Few studies proved that using noise benefits daytime mood and functioning. After all, these are the benefits most of us seek from a good sleep.
If you have difficulty falling or remaining asleep, waking too early, and feeling unrefreshed during the day for a long time, your problems should be checked by a medical professional. Your doctor can judge, provide treatment options and offer treatment if needed. Treating sleep problems appropriately with evidence-based treatments and before they develop into a chronic (慢性的) issue, not relying on recommendations on TikTok, will ultimately lead to better sleep in the long term.
32. Why does the author mention TikTok in paragraph 1?
A. To introduce the topic.
B. To serve as an example.
C. To show how popular TikTok is.
D. To explain what is brown noise.
33. What may white noise sound like?
A. Light rain.
B. Steady rainfall.
C. A rushing river.
D. A violent wind.
34. What can we know according to the passage?
A. All the three kinds of noise mentioned have little effect on sleep.
B. Listening to noise when sleeping benefits daytime mood and functioning.
C. No researches have shown brown noise can benefit sleep so far.
D. Brown noise has higher frequencies than both white and pink noise.
35. What is the author’s attitude toward the benefit of brown noise?
A. Negative. B. Doubtful.
C. Supportive. D. Unconcerned.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
According to the American Psychological Association (APA), your self-worth is your evaluation of yourself as a capable and valuable human being deserving of consideration and respect. 36 Here are some strategies that can help you promote your sense of self-worth.
37 Getting good at something and enjoying it can provide positive strengthening and skillful and capable feelings. Having regular reminders of your talents, strengths, and abilities can make you more confident in other areas of your life as well.
Exercise and challenge yourself. Research shows us that physical activity is linked to a greater sense of self-worth. Putting moderate pressure on your body and working towards increasingly advanced goals each time give you exact proof that you are capable of more than you thought. 38
Challenge negative thoughts. 39 In fact, most of the time, they are distortions (扭曲) caused by internalized critics, stress, and situational demands. Next time you have a negative self-thought, think of an alternative positive thought to replace it.
Seek support. You could also see a therapist for self-worth, if you notice that it’s constricting (压缩) the quality of your functioning in your relationships, work, or emotional well-being.
40 Sometimes self-worth with this restriction gets so low that people believe they are not worthy of more. In these cases, the perspective of a trained therapist can be very effective.
A. Do things you enjoy and are good at.
B. Remember that thoughts are not facts.
C. Concentrate on what you’re interested in.
D. It is an internal sense of being worthy of love.
E. People with positive self-worth tend to have greater confidence.
F. Having low self-worth can be like living life through restricted blinders.
G. Exercise also readjusts your mindset and offers both physical and mental benefits.

As the winter vacation drew near, my husband Keith, a student at Utah State University, and I felt a growing desire to get together with my parents in Northern California, which is 800 miles away from where we lived here in Utah. Yet, we couldn’t afford the long trip. Then arrived a most unexpected gift in a New Year card: enough money for gas for the drive home. We were so excited. Keith took time off from his part-time job and we packed the car. With a good wish for safety and travelling conditions, we hit the road.
We drove all the way to the west coast of California. Everything went well and we finally made it to my childhood home. As Keith honked the horn to signal our arrival, my family rushed out to greet us, welcoming us with cheer and laughter. We celebrated our get-together for the first time in three years.
All too soon, the time came for us to return. With tears and hugs, we started on our way. Hours later, the weather conditions started worsening. Heavy snow moved wildly and big snowflakes patted against our windshield (挡风玻璃). Keith was having trouble seeing the road, as the headlights seemed not bright. He pulled over, and got out to brush the snow away from them. That was when he found we had only one headlight on.
We had no choice but to head slowly out onto the nearly deserted freeway. Our car bravely struggled through the snowy darkness. We desperately tried to keep our eyes on the white line in the road, but it was disappearing quickly in the piling snow. We seemed to be all alone on that dark stretch of freeway. There was no traffic in either direction, and the visibility was near zero. We knew that our parents were praying us safely through the night. We prayed for help and safety too.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Suddenly, out of nowhere, a semi-truck with bright lights passed by.
With his help, we safely drove out of the snowstorm.

第四部分 写作
第一节
参考范文:
Dear Editor,
I am Li Hua, a senior student in our school. With the 60th anniversary of the school approaching, I can’t wait to deliver my sincere gratitude towards her.
The great impact that the school has had on me can’t be emphasized too much. I can still remember that there was a time when most of my schoolmates and I had trouble in adapting to the new environment. It is the teachers’ care as well as a variety of interesting and constructive activities and classes that gradually made us calm down and be more motivated. Three years’ senior high school life goes by so fast. Not only have I gained sufficient knowledge, but also I have learned how I could solve problems and face the challenging social life wisely.
It is really a great pleasure to have studied here! I do hope our school will cultivate more outstanding talents and get better and better.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
参考范文:
Paragraph 1:
Suddenly, out of nowhere, a semi-truck with bright lights passed by. To our amazement, it pulled into our lane, directly in front of our car. Keith sounded the horn of our car, trying to keep a safe distance behind the semi-truck. We thought the driver would speed ahead. Instead, he slowed down and stayed right with us, lighting our way. Figuring out he tried to guide us, we felt as if the semi-truck driver were the angel protecting us that night.
Paragraph 2:
With his help, we safely drove out of the snowstorm. To signal our gratitude, Keith blinked our one headlight at the semi-truck driver in front of us. Staying with us all the way, this unknown kind man waved goodbye to us through his windshield. I felt so grateful to the semi-truck driver for giving us hope through the dark and snow-filled night. Thanks to his great help, we traveled safely through the massive snowstorm.

Text 10
W: A healthy newborn girl was discovered in Central Park yesterday morning. The baby was abandoned on the top of a rock shortly before dawn after the mother gave birth to her there. The police said that the baby was healthy and weighed 7 pounds. Now they were searching for the mother. A policeman said that they had never had anything like this before. They really didn’t get babies left in the park. But they were just happy the baby was all right. The police rushed the baby to a nearby hospital. Fortunately she was OK. The police believed the baby was born less than half an hour before she was discovered. They also believed judging from the amount of blood found on the rock, that the mother might have given birth there. Detectives were investigating whether the mother was a homeless woman who called a baby rescue hotline early yesterday. The head of Hope Foundation said that his hotline received a call at about 5:30 am from a young homeless woman in Manhattan. The caller asked, “How do I get rid of my baby?” Then she was told to go to either a hospital or a fire station. But the woman was afraid she would be recognized there. The head also said that the woman wouldn’t even tell him where he could possibly meet her since they had two teams that could help with the delivery, if necessary.
