I enjoy throwing stuff away. I'd love to go full minimalism (极简主义), but my wife and two teenage kids do not share my dream of a house with almost nothing in it. I have tried. When the kids were litle, I taught them my two favorite games—“Do We Need It?" and “Put It in Its Place"—and made them play every few months. Their enthusiasm never mathed mine.
If I'm going to be honest, my own tidying skills are not as great as I'd like. My “discarded" pile is never quite the trash mountain I want because I make up excuses for why things are useful. I consider this unhealthy. I want to be better at moving on.
So, this time I found help—the classics for people like me: The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, by Marie Kondo. Kondo's commitment to her craft is astonishing. Her philosophy is only to keep things you love. Can I go full Kondo? I will try. One central idea is to clean by category. You start by collecting all clothes and gathering them together for consideration. It makes you rethink how you organize. Next, hold each item and ask if it brings you joy. This way you' re choosing what to keep. And that's how I find myself with all my clothes on my bedroom floor. My wife walks by and gives me a look that says I'm nuts. She's probably not wrong.
Somewhere near the bottom of this chaos is my special jacket. I move through the pile: pants, shirts, suits and shoes. Then my last category: jackets. I haven't worn the thing in about 30 years. Somehow, it has survived. Now that I'm striving to follow Kondo- surely, its time has come?
I hold it in my hand. There is a tear just below the collar that widens as I hold it. It's literally falling apart. Will I ever wear it again? Not a chance. Does it feel good to wear? Does it bring me joy? Actually, yes. At this moment, my daughter walks in. She askss about the jacket. I tell her the story. She thinks I should keep it It's cool and unique and full of memories. She is arguing that nostalgia (怀念) is the very reason.
I'm not entirely convinced by my daughter's arguments. I believe in looking ahead, not backward. Nevertheless, sometimes it's hard to let go. So I gently place the jacket on the “keep” pile.
24. What does the underlined word “discarded” probably mean in Paragraph 2?

Re-entering the workforce after a long absence is often a difficult path. The longer you're out, the harder it can be to get back in. For years, companies like Goldman Sachs have offered return-to- work programs as a way to help workers go back into the workforce after a long break. Returnships,as they are often called, offer training and networking opportunities to workers- usually mothers- who've been out of the workforce for an extended period of time. More recently, there's been growing interest from companies in starting this type of program.
Goldman Sachs' returnship program requires applicants to have been out of the workforce for two years or more. “We knew the interview process would need to look different," said Kelley Berlin, Grubhub's chief human resources officer. “We couldn't view them based on their current technology skills. We had to look at their performance level and potential.' The first week of Goldman Sachs' 12-week program focuses on training, followed by an apprenticeship(学徒期) in one of the bank's divisions. The participants are paired with a manager, a coach and previous returnees. On average, the company gets about 1,000 applications yearly for its program and accepts 25 to 30. Roughly 75% of those who go through the program get extended offers elsewhere to become flltime employees. Participants are paid S40 an hour during the returmship and the salaries of the full-time positions offered after the program are $ 100,000 or above.
The audio storytelling company Audible started its returnship program during the pandemic(疫情).“We felt that starting during the pandemic would be best because we would be able to support many jobless caregivers and their families caused by the pandemic,” said Anne Emi, Audible's Chief People Officer. “Knowing that it was very hard for professionals taking caregiving career breaks to re-enter the workforce, we knew it would be much more diffcult during the pandemic. But we were so impressed with what our program brought to the table. In a year or two, we will be growing the class by three times and bringing in 100 apprentices to join the business.”
28. Why are return-to-work programs organized?
A. To help companies find more qualifed workers.
B. To offer workers chances to re-enter the workforce.
C. To provide workers with further training opportunities.
D. To plan out proper timetables for stay-at- home mothers.
29. What can we know about Goldman Sachs' program?
A. Trainees will be well paid after taking full-timne positions.
B. Trainees need to work in the bank for 12 weeks.
C. Few trainees will get employed ater the program.
D. It is easy to be accepted by the program.
30. What may Anne Emi probably think of Audible's returnship program?
A. Interesting. B. Problematic. C. Risky. D. Successful.
31. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Companies are seriously affected by the pandemic.
B. Workers can get better jobs after training.
C. Returnships offer help for mothers back to work.
D. More jobs have appeared after the pandemic.
D
The term “social distancing” has been at the center of public conversation for a while. But it's not “social" distance we are trying to promote. It's physical separation. In fact, preserving social ties- even at a distance- is essential for both mental and physical health. The results of an analytic review done in 2017 indicate that a lack of social support is on a par with smoking cigarettes as a risk factor for health.
Given this fact, how might we best stay connected to others while maintaining physical distance? Would we be better off e-mailing a friend? Making a phone call? Seting up a video chat? In our study, Nick Epley and I tested whether the media through which people interact afcts their sense of connection- and how expectations about certain technologies impact the communication media they choose to use.
In our experiment, we asked participants to reconnect with someone that they hadn't interacted with recently, either through e-mail or over the phone. Participants first made predictions about what it would be like to get in touch if they reached out in these two ways. They generally believed that they'd feel more connected when interacting via the phone than over e-mail. But they also predicted that talking on the phone could be more uncomfortable than sending an e-mail. Although these participants believed that talking encouraged stronger bonds, most of them said they'd rather send an e-mail than call the person up. Fears about awkwardness, it seems, push individuals toward text-based methods for communicating.
In the next part of the experiment, we had participants actually reconnect using one randomly determined mode of communication and then followed up with them after they had done so. We found that people do form meaningfully stronger bonds when interacting over the phone than over e-mail. Importantly, though, there was no difference in the amount of discomfort when reconnecting on the phone.
The next time you think about how best to connect, consider calling or setting up a video chat. Feelings of social connection are preferably facilitated by voice rather than a keyboard.
32. How does the author support his view on the importance of maintaining social ties?
A. By stating a deep-rooted tradition. B. By sharing public opinions.
C. By citing a published report. D. By presenting oficial documents.
33. What did the author and Epley's study focus on?
A. How social media choices affect feelings of connection.
B. How technologies impact means of communication.
C. Why maintaining social separation is bad for mental health.
D. Why reconnecting with friends over the phone brings awkwardness.
34. What can we infer from the study results?
A. They contradicted participants' predictions partly.
B. They provided insights for future studies.
C. They confirmed researchers' expectations.
D. They changed the research objectives.
35. What can be concluded from the text?
A. Keeping in touch is key to a lasting friendship.
B. For stronger bonds, talk instead of typing.
C. Think before you consider contacting an old friend.
D. Text-based methods for communication cause discomfort.

There's one thing everyone must have in common-listening to our bodies. If we don't listen to our bodies, productivity isn't sustainable. 37 They notice signs such as lack of sleep and constantly feeling tired. But, most importantly, they act. When you learn to maximize your time as highly productive people do, maintaining longer periods of efficient work becomes easier.
The benefits of prioritizing downtime can not be understated. Sleep, the ultimate rest, is vital to a productive person's weapon. For example, a study found that when you sleep for four hours or less consistently, your thinking ability declines to the equivalent of adding about eight years in age. Besides, as we know, your body needs time off from work. Think of the famous metaphor: you can't shoot an arrow without first pulling it back. 40

B. You don't need to get anything done.
C. The tools keep your mind in check and focus high.
D. Highly productive people know when they' re burning out.
E. All highly productive people manage their time ffctively.
F. However, useful tools like Convert-Kit extend beyond Trello.

Thin, average, and undisciplined, I was the underdog of the boys' basketball tryouts (选拔赛) in seventh grade. Making the team was very important to me. Although I was extremely nervous, I truly thought I would make the team. But I went in overly optimistic, and quickly faced a cruel reality check.
When on the court, I huffed and puffed like an old man on his last legs; clearly, I was out of shape and having trouble keeping up. When it hit me that this was only the first day, and that there was a second to follow, I realized I would have to step it up in order to gain a spot on the team.
Unfortunately, day two went exactly like day one: I missed shots, passed badly like an out-of-breath fool. Hoping the coach was not watching all my bad moves, I had trouble keeping a positive atitude. Finally, Coach-who at five-foot-four usually seemed small, posted the lists of the Boys A and B Teams. Everybody quickly ran to catch a glimpse of the chosen few.
After scanning the list once, twice, three times, my name was nowhere. Although I had predicted the disaster that had now settled on me, with my head hanging. I slowly walked to the car. This experience definitely had not gone as I planned.
On the way home, I complained “How could that foolish boy is a better choice than me? An...”
“Adam!" my mom cut me off. “Why don't you realize maybe you need a lttle more practice? You'd better go to basketball camps next summer."
Although I did not want to believe her, I knew it was true. Failing to make the team was nobody's fault but mine. Right then and there, in the middle of my anger, I realized I had to get my act together.

第二节
Then I threw myself into as many basketball opportunities as I could find. Every day, I insisted on running 10 kilometers and jumping ropes 1000 times after school to increase my energy level and physical strength. Additionally, I practiced passing, dribbling and shooting with my friends every day to improve my basketball skills. When the summer holidays came, I signed up for a basketball camp, where I got a lot of professional basketball knowledge and training from the coaches. Gradually, I found myself making great progress.
When I took part in the eighth-grade basketball tryouts, I was moderate, swift and strong. When on the court, I kept running without any trouble, dribbling freely and passing the basketball accurately. As long as I got the chance, I would try to shoot. One, two, three... I scored ten goals at last. There was no doubt that I suceeded in becoming a member of the basketball team. It was my determination and efforts that helped me achieve my dream.
