To: Marilyn Sawyer
From: Paul Lebowski
Sent: Tuesday, October 3
Subject: Office rental
Marilyn,
Here's a link to an office rental ad I found online: www.offices. com/10-01.1 think it's worth looking at even though the rent is a bit high. I know it is a good deal more than we are paying now, but look at the size. It's twice as big as our current office, and I'm sure we can use the space.
And it has a kitchen, a bathroom and a reception area just like we have now. Unfortunately it is nowhere near a subway station. That is a convenience I would miss having, but it does have parking, unlike our current office. I'm sure our clients would appreciate that. It would also be good to be in a building with an elevator. I'm really tired of using the stairs. I'd like to see the space as soon as possible. Could you call and make an appointment? Try and get one for tomorrow if you can, because after that I'll be away until next Monday, as you know. Thanks.
Paul

B篇
I saw my first tree today. Dad used to tell me stories about the trees that still existed when he was a boy. There weren’t very many even then, with the urbanization program in full swing.
The O’Brien home was one of the few examples of old-style wooden structures that hadn’t been destroyed in Boston’s urban-renewal campaign. The family had been able to avoid this because of its wealth and political influence, and the house was passed on through generations to the present. Old man O’Brien had no children, so when he died, the Urban Center bought it. Then an official discovered that the house had a backyard-in the yard was a live tree!
When the news of the tree’s discovery leaked out quite a few sightseers stopped by to have a look at it, and the local government, realizing the money-making potential, began charging admission and advertising the place. By now it had become a favorite spot for family trips like ours.
Dad paid the fee and we walked through a doorway hidden in a bookshelf and into the backyard. I just couldn’t help noticing the tree!
It was located at one end of the yard, with a fence around it for protection. It was similar in form to the plastic trees I’d seen, but there was much more. You could see details more delicate than in any artificially made plant. And it was alive. But best of all was the smell-fresh, living smell, unfamiliar to the world outside with metal, plastic, and glass. I wanted to touch the bark, but the fence prevented me from doing so.
On the way back, I read through the brochures. One part said the O’Brien home would be torn down next year to make room for some insurance building, and the tree will have to go, too.
I just sat still, fingering the object in my pocket that I had picked in the O’Brien’s backyard. I think it’s called an acorn (橡子).
5. Why could the tree in the O’Brien’s backyard survive till today?
A. It possessed some special characteristics.
B. It had a very strong fence around to protect it.
C. It was preserved together with the house by its owner.
D. It got the local government’s attention as a tourist attraction.
6. How might the author feel after the trip?
A. Annoyed. B. Calm. C. Excited. D. Upset.
7. Which statement best shows the theme of the passage?
A. Social progress and urbanization come at a cost.
B. Social progress should give way to nature protection.
C. Humans value nature protection over social progress.
D. Urbanization has more advantages than disadvantages.
C篇
The playing field is never even or equal. Your skills and attitude play a major role in the outcome. Knowing what you can do to have an advantage can make the difference between success and failure.
My kids tell me it's unfair to play with the big children. I tell them that's right. Unfairness is a good thing. There is more to be gained by the effort when things seem unfair. It is true that many things in the world are unfair. But unfair things usually can be a boon to you. For example, the early bird catches the worm. It is unfair that the bird that sleeps in misses out on breakfast but it is nice to know that if it gets up early it is sure to get the worm.
I always try to explain to my kids that complaining about how unfair something is will get them nowhere. Instead, make the most out of it and get on the other side of it. Once you do that you are in the advantage. Above all, you have to focus on gaining that unfair advantage and in order to do that, build your inner strength, When you empower (武装) yourself, you are gaining skills or abilities, confidence and self-esteem (自尊).
You should look at your place in the world. Where do you want io be financially, spiritually, emotionally, and physically ? You are creating your own story when you empower yourself.
You can build all the advantages that you need to live the life that you want. If you haven't yet, you need to make a list of all the things you want to experience in your new life. This will help you focus on building advantages so that you never have to say that it's Not Fair. When you do this then you will be able to realize that unfairness is a good thing and you will want to teach those around you to see unfairness in this way too.
8. What docs the underlined word "boon" in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Something that is very terrible. B. Something that is very helpful
C. Something that is very kind D. Something that is very scared
9. What can we infer from the example of the playing field used by the author?
A. The author wants to introduce his topic
B. The author wants to support his opinion
C. He wants tell us that having an advantage is needed
D. He wants to show skills and attitudes are important in playing games
10. What is the best way to deal with unfairness according to the author?
A. Just accept it. B. Thy to change it.
C. Simply ignore it. D. Make good use of it.
11. You are told to look at your place in the world in order to ________.
A. make yourself better B. be proud of yourself
C. have more confidence D. know others' advantages
D篇
In the past few decades, great progress has been made in the field of space exploration, which has enabled mankind to have a deeper understanding of the Solar System, our place in it and in the universe. “We sent probes(探测器) to every planet in the Solar System. This is by far the best one,” said Clayton, vice president of Blue Origin. “Let's focus right now on protecting the Earth environment, and then we'll go from there. Space science and technology should be people-centric and application-centric, and focus on improving human life. We need to have a strong footing on the Earth, learn to solve the day-to-day problems of the society.”
“Space technology can help achieve the 17 sustainable development goals to be achieved by 2030 set by the United Nations. Satellite monitoring can really help with agriculture. ” said Victoria, CEO of a company working on sustainable development, “Through Global Navigation Satellite System, animals' movement information recorded on self-recharging devices can be transmitted to the company server. Farmers can be alerted in real time if anomalies(异常现象)are detected. We can use it to ensure the traceability of the entire meat chain. As a result, it enables consumers to know that the beef they are eating does not come from protected areas or the cattle don't contribute to deforestation. ”
As early as 2007, Michael Griffin, former Administrator of NASA, put forward the concept of the “space economy” in a speech. He is very optimistic about the market prospect of commercial space and said, “According to the latest data, the global space industry could reach $1 trillion in 2040, up from $ 378 billion currently. I believe more business models and space activities will be created in the future to achieve the economic scale of $1 trillion. ”
As an entrepreneur(创业者)herself, Victoria thinks the thriving space market will bring countless opportunities for entrepreneurs. She mentioned future settlements on Mars or on the Moon. “If we are going to develop a new society outside the Earth, we will need all types of applications and all types of startups. But coming back to the Earth, there are so many problems that need to be solved, and space technology can really help with that.”
12. What does the underlined word “This” in Paragraph 1 refer to ?
A. A successful space exploration.
B. A probe sent to other planets.
C. The planet people are living on now.
D. The solar system people are exploring.
13. In Clayton's opinion, what should be the first concern about space technology?
A. Providing more financial support.
B. Improving people's life on earth.
C. Sending more probes in the universe.
D. The development of related technology.
14. How does Victoria support her statement about satellite monitoring in Paragraph 2?
A. By making reasoning.
B. By providing accurate figures.
C. By making comparison.
D. By illustrating from different aspects.
15. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. Necessities of space exploration.
B. Breakthroughs in space exploration.
C. Possible application of space technology.
D. Controversial issues about space technology.

The Flynn Effect
The Flynn effect, first described in the 1980sby researcher James Flynn, refers to the finding that scores on IQ tests have increased in the past century. One research paper, published by psychologist Lisa Trahan and her colleagues, combined the results of other published studies and found that IQ scores have indeed increased since the 1950s.___16__Trahan and her colleagues observed, “The existence of the Flynn effect is rarely disputed.”
____17____One explanation has to do with improvements in health and nutrition. For example, the past century has seen a decrease in smoking and alcohol use in pregnancy, improvements in the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, and improvements in nutrition. As Scott Barry Kaufman writes for Psychology Today, “The Flynn effect serves as a reminder that when we give people more opportunities to prosper, more people do prosper.”
____18____In a TED talk, Flynn explains that the world today is “a world where we've had to develop new mental habits, new habits of mind.” Flynn has found that IQ scores have increased the most rapidly on questions that ask us to find similarities between different things, and more abstract types of problem solving, both of which are things that we need to do more of in the modem world.
Several ideas have been brought up to explain why modern society might lead to higher scores on IQ tests. For example, today, many more of us have demanding, intellectually rigorous jobs. Schools have also changed:whereas a test at school in the early 1900s might have been more focused on memorization, a recent test might be more likely to focus on explaining the reasons for something.____19___Family sizes tend to be smaller, and it has been suggested that this may allow children to pick up on new vocabulary words while interacting with their parents. I's even been suggested that the entertainment we consume is more complex today. ___20___
Therefore, both the education we receive and the society we live in shape our IQ in a way that we cannot imagine.
A. In other words, there is a lot about IQ that we may not know yet.
B. Another explanation for the Flynn effect has to do with societal changes
C. Researchers have put forward several theories to explain the Flynn effect.
D. Trying to understand and anticipate plot points may actually be making us smarter.
E. Although there have been exceptions, IQ scores have generally increased over time.
F. Additionally, more people today are likely to finish high school and go on to college.
G. The Flynn effect shows that human mind is more adaptable than we might have thought.

根据文章首段“900 sq. feet divided into two private offices and comfortable reception area, small kitchen, one bathroom.(900平方英尺分为两个私人办公室和舒适的接待区,小厨房,一个浴室)”可知,这间出租的办公室有900平方英尺。通过下文邮件的第一段“It's twice as big as our current office, and I'm sure we can use the space.(它是我们现在办公室的两倍大,我相信我们可以利用这个空间)”可推知,Marilyn和Paul的办公室是这个要出租的办公室的一半大,即450平方英尺。故选A项。
通过邮件第二段“Unfortunately it is nowhere near a subway station. That is a convenience I would miss having, but it does have parking, unlike our current office.(不幸的是,它离地铁站很远。这是我怀念的便利,但它确实有停车位,不像我们现在的办公室)”可推知,Marilyn和Paul的办公室在地铁站附近。故选A项。
First month's rent and security deposit equal to one month's rent required to move in.(l, 750美元/月。第一个月的租金和押金均等于入住所需的一个月租金)”可推知,Marilyn and Paul在搬进广告中提及的办公室前要交第一个月房租和同等数额的押金,即3500美元。故选D项。
4.推理判断题。通过邮件最后一段“Try and get one for tomorrow if you can(如果可以的话,试着预约明天去看)”以及邮件的发送日期“Sent: Tuesday, October 3(发送日期:10月3日,星期二)”可推知,Paul想要星期三去看看这个办公室。故选C项。

C. It was preserved together with the house by its owner.
D. It got the local government’s attention as a tourist attraction.

7. Which statement best shows the theme of the passage?
A. Social progress and urbanization come at a cost.
B. Social progress should give way to nature protection.
C. Humans value nature protection over social progress.
D. Urbanization has more advantages than disadvantages.
根据第二段中“The O’Brien home was one of the few examples of old-style wooden structures that hadn’t been destroyed in Boston’s urban-renewal campaign. The family had been able to avoid this because of its wealth and political influence, and the house was passed on through generations to the present. …Then an official discovered that the house had a backyard-in the yard was a live tree! (在波士顿的城市重建运动中,奥布莱恩的房子是少数几个没有被摧毁的旧式木结构建筑的例子之一。由于其财富和政治影响力,这个家族得以避免这种情况,这所房子代代相传到现在。……后来一位官员发现这所房子有一个后院——院子里是一棵活的树!)”可知,O’Brien家后院的树能存活到今天是因为它和房子一起被主人保存了下来。故选C项。
6.推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中“One part said the O’Brien home would be torn down next year to make room for some insurance building, and the tree will have to go, too. (其中一部分说O’Brien的房子明年将被拆除,为一些保险大楼腾出空间,那棵树也必须被砍掉。)”和最后一段中“I just sat still, fingering the object in my pocket that I had picked in the O’Brien’s backyard. (我只能静静地坐着,用手摸着我口袋里的东西,它是在O’Brien家后院捡到的。)”可知,作者在这次旅行后会感到沮丧。故选D项。
7.主旨大意题。根据第一段中“Dad used to tell me stories about the trees that still existed when he was a boy. There weren’t very many even then, with the urbanization program in full swing. (爸爸常给我讲他小时候还存在的那些树的故事。即使在当时,随着城市化进程的全面推进,这样的城市也不多。)”和倒数第二段中“One part said the O’Brien home would be torn down next year to make room for some insurance building, and the tree will have to go, too. (其中一部分说O’Brien的房子明年将被拆除,为一些保险大楼腾出空间,那棵树也必须被砍掉。)”以及下文的描述,可知,本文讲述了作者在城市化全面推进的社会里终于见到了第一棵真树,这棵树种在O’Brien家后院,但是因为要为一些保险大楼腾出空间,明年这棵树也要被砍掉,这使作者很沮丧。因此本文的主题选项A“社会进步和城市化是有代价的。”符合题意。故选A项。

故将a改为the。
