LONDON- Britain prepares for a vote Thursday that will decide whether it leaves the European Union. The debate has centered on immigration and economic security. Both sides have lowered the tone of their arguments after a three-day suspension(暂停) of campaigning that followed the murder of an anti-Brexit lawmaker, an incident that polls(民意调查) suggest has shocked many previously undecided voters who now say they will vote to remain.
These are uncertain times in a nation whose economy is the second largest in the European Union. The risks are huge. There are warnings that leaving the 28-member group may cause the British pound to lose 15 percent of its value and bring the resignation(辞职) of David Cameron, the country's prime minister; his stay or not depends on whether Britain listens to him and votes to remain.
For months, the Leave campaign has been hitting the streets. Its arguments are based largely on immigration, and the belief that Britain has handed control of its borders(边界) to a European super state: "The U.K. has lost control over migration. We have to accept anyone into this country if they have an EU passport, no matter if they have a criminal record or not. We are not allowed to say 'no' to people and that is damaging for the security of the U.K., but it is also putting pressure on jobs and opportunities for young people," said Tom Harwood, a Brexit campaigner.
The murder of Jo Cox, an anti-Brexit, pro-immigrant lawmaker by a far right extremist(极端分子) with a history of mental problems had a serious effect on both campaigns, and on voters.
Polls since the June 16th murder showed the Leave camp losing ground, but with both sides still very close on a referendum(全民投票) that many believe could change the course of European history.
24.What does the underlined word " Brexit" in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Break the law of the European Union. B.Break away from the European Union.
C.Build the exit to the European Union. D.Ban the immigration into Britain.
25.What is implied from the passage?
A.The immigration has caused great concern in Britain.
B.Brexit will be good for British economy.
C.Both camps have been campaigning and debating on the streets for months.
D.The murder of Jo Cox made many voters determined to vote for the exit.
26.Which of the following statement is true?
A.Britain will leave the European Union after the vote.
B.Anyone with a passport can choose to stay and work in Britain.
C.Whether Cameron will resign depends on the result of the referendum.
D.Jo Cox was murdered by a Brexit campaigner in June 16m.
27.What's the attitude of the report to the event of Brexit?
    A.Positive B.Negative C.Indifferent(漠不关心的) D.Concerned.

Morogoro, Tanzia, British research scientist, Dr. Donna Kean is training 170 rats to be sent into earthquake ruins to do vital work in finding earthquake survivors. The project has trained about seven rats to date, taking around two weeks to get the rescue rats up to speed. These rescue rats are sent into mock(模拟的)earthquake ruins with tiny backpacks that contain microphones, video gears, and location trackers. These tools will allow the rescue teams to communicate with earthquake survivors in real-time.
“I train these clever creatures to save victims trapped in collapsed buildings after earthquakes. We kit them out with a rat backpack, and train them to activate a switch when they find a victim and come back for a tasty treat. ” posted Dr Donna Kean on Twitter on May 26, 2022.
Dr. Kean expressed how the rescue rats are ideal for this type of work saying, “Rats would be able to get into small spaces to get victims buried in rubble. ” The highly swift rats never set off landmines and their natural swiftness makes them ideal for use in hard-to-navigate disaster zones. Their suitability for this work goes further, with rats being good at surviving in different environments and living off of anything. The rescue rats are even being trained to respond to beeps that call them back to their base.
Dr. Kean's team collaborates(合作) with the non-profit organization APOLO for their “Hero Rats” project. These “Hero Rats” are set to start working with a search and rescue team in Turkey, joining earthquake rescue efforts in the high-risk area. The group of 170 rats is being trained for additional projects involving landmines, tuberculosis (肺结核), and even sniffing out Brucellosis, an infectious disease that impacts farm animals. Dr. Kean feels hopeful about her project’s promising results and is excited to be the only organization in this space working with this species.
28.Why are the rescue rats equipped with backpacks?
A.To monitor the rats. B.To locate the survivors.
C.To record the rescue process. D.To keep track of the survivors.
29.According to the passage, what can a trained rescue rat do?
A.Set off landmines accurately. B.Dig out those buried in rubble.
C.Figure out the signal from beeps. D.Complete the task without a reward.
30.What make(s) rats outweigh other animals in this project?
A.Their efforts in training. B.Their nature of rescuing.
C.Their eagerness for survivals. D.Their adaptability to environments.
31.What can be inferred about the “Hero Rats“ project?
A.The results fail to prove the potential. B.The rats have to be trained repeatedly.
C.The project probably pioneers in the space. D.The rats have been widely used in various fields.

“Are you OK, Cassie?” Jonah asked, from the doorway of the Sea Holly Cafe.
Cassie had been sitting on a chair outside for the past 10 minutes, but not really taking in the beauty of the sea.
“Oh, I should be getting back to work.” She rose hurriedly.
“We’re not busy, take your time.” Jonah came with a cappuccino for her. “Thanks.” She accepted the coffee, “Everything’s fine.” Then Jonah nodded, revealing a comforting smile, and went back inside.
He was a great boss, but Cassie didn’t feel like telling him what was wrong.
Cassie had gone to study fine art hopefully but dropped out after only a year due to the unbearable homesickness. Since then, she hadn’t touched her paints for a whole year. Today was doomed to be a sad date, the anniversary of her exciting plans turning to dust. She felt a crushing sense of disappointment. In her painting, she had captured a good likeness of the cloudy sky and the reflection of the dying light upon the water, but the picture did have a sad, dreary (沉闷的) quality.
About 20 minutes later, she was shocked by a voice at her shoulder, “That’s beautiful.”
Cassie turned, and there was a woman wearing a blue coat. The woman eyed it again. “You have talent, but there is much sadness in it, for one so young.” Cassie’s eyes were filled with tears. “My name’s Willow,” the woman said kindly, “Why not try painting the sunrise instead, my dear? You might find it helps.”
With Willow’s words echoing in her brain, Cassie rose an hour earlier the next day, caught a bus to the beach and began to paint again.
When she finished, Jonah was just opening up. He picked the painting up and appreciated it at eye height. “Hey, this is good. It’s really —“For a moment he struggled for the word, then found it and turned to her, beaming, “Optimistic!”
In her picture the sun was powering into the sky, casting a clear, golden pathway across the sea.
32.Which of the following best explains “He was a great boss” underlined in paragraph 5?
A.Jonah offered a coffee to Cassie. B.Jonah ran a successful cafe business.
C.Jonah figured out what was wrong with Cassie. D.Jonah was considerate of Cassie’s emotional upset.
33.What led to Cassie’s low spirits?
A.That her paints were covered with dust. B.That her homesickness was aroused again.
C.That her original plan was abandoned midway. D.That her painting was full of a sorrowful and dull quality.
34.Why did Willow advise Cassie to paint the sunrise?
A.It was more beautiful. B.It might cheer Cassie up.
C.It had artistic inspiration. D.It made a difference to Willow.
35.What can be a suitable title for the passage?
A.The Sun Always Rises B.Every Man Has Its Price
C.Strike While the Iron Is Hot D.A Good Medicine Tastes Bitter

Are you starting to feel a little burnt out by all the texts you’re getting? Set daily times when you’re available.
Make a clear schedule each day for when you check your messages and are available to have a conversation. ____37____ It’s okay to read the texts you get during your leisure time, but don’t respond to them until you’re scheduled. ____39____
Changing your boundaries can be tough, so keep strengthening them. Even though you may still get a lot of text messages, stick to the limits you set for yourself so you don’t stress yourself out or feel the need to reply. Otherwise, if you keep responding when you said you’re unavailable, other people might be confused or get mixed messages.
Silence the person if they don’t respect your boundaries.
Don’t hesitate to cut off communication if they still won’t listen. Some people may not understand your boundaries no matter how often you remind them. If you’re still bombed with messages throughout the day, silence the person or turn off notices from the app they use so you don’t get notified. ____40____

Each time when evenings approached, the children around would crowd into the only house where had a television. We stared at the small screen until the program ended. Parent would make every effort to drag their children to bed when it was getting lately. But now, iPads and smartphones have taken place of televisions. 72.A Labor Experience
As we all know, labor plays an important role in the healthy growth of us students. So I went to work in KFC fast food restaurant last summer vacation.
I had to get up early and kept working to the midnight every day. As a cleaner , the work was hard and boring. I almost gave up halfway. Fortunately, one of my workmates was very humorous. He often told jokes to make me laugh and helped me overcome difficulties. Because of my outstanding work, the manager was very satisfied with me.
Although I was very tired then, it has helped me understand the meaning of labor better than ever. I have been determined to do another part-time job this summer vacation.

W: Jack, a Mr. Turner called you just now. He said your suit was ready.
M: Ah, I ordered a suit in his shop last week.
W: Yes, he said he would be waiting for you this afternoon.
M: Oh, dear, I have an important meeting to attend.
W: Don’t worry, I can fetch it for you.
M: Thank you! You are so kind. Oh, this is the order note and here is the money. And the address is on the order note.
    Text7:
W: That’s the first film I’ve seen with a break. I thought they only had them in plays and shows.
M: They sometimes have them in long films like that one. It gave me the chance to try and understand what was going on—there were many characters!
W: It was hard to work out what was happening, and the break made me forget who was who! The soundtrack didn’t really go with the action in the film either.
M: They kept playing the same song, but it added to the atmosphere. I don’t know why people said the film was good though.

    Text8:
W: I met Betty today on the street.
M: What has she been doing?
W: She said she just got back with George from a trip to London.
M: They did? So what did she say about London?
W: Oh, they had a lovely time. She said we’d really enjoy it if we were there too.
M: Did you ask how the weather was?
W: It seems it was rather cool in London, but nice and warm along the coast.
M: Did she say where she stayed?
W: She told me, but I don’t remember.
M: Well, did she say the hotels were crowded?
W: Yes, she said there were always too many travelers at this time of the year. So she recommends we make our plans as soon as possible.
M: Well, we’d better do some checking. Do you still have the guidebook?
W: Yes, here it is. If I remember, it says the cheapest is around $35 a day.
    Text9:
W: Hello, my name is Joanne and I will be your new flatmate.
M: Nice to meet you, Joanne. I’m Carl. So, I hear you’re a college student at West Village University. Is that right?
W: Yes. I’m studying psychology at West Village and I’ll start my first year there.
M: That’s great. I’m also a student at West Village and I’m studying engineering in my second year. What made you want to go to West Village University?
W: Well, I was in between two schools at first—West Village University and Sacred Heart University. I ended up choosing West Village because they offered me a generous scholarship, while my parents thought that Sacred Heart University was near my house. How about you, Carl?
M: I chose West Village University because it was fairly close to my home and my brother had attended the school before me. He said he had a great time in learning business. He gave me all the tips and tricks about which professors to follow and what to avoid.
W: Today is our first meeting. How about having dinner together? We can have a chat about our hobbies and living habits.
M: Sounds lovely. It’s my treat today.
    Text10:
M: Larry Walters is among the relatively few who have actually turned their dreams into reality.
Larry was a driver, but his lifelong dream was to fly. When he graduated from high school, he joined the Air Force in the hope of becoming a pilot. Unfortunately, poor vision disqualified him. So he had to satisfy himself with watching others fly the jets over his backyard.
Then one day, Larry bought a tank of helium and 45 weather balloons. Back in his yard, Larry tied the balloons to his lawn chair. He anchored the chair to his jeep and inflated the balloons with helium. Then he packed some sandwiches and drinks.
When his preparations were complete, Larry sat in his chair and cut the anchoring string. His plan was to lazily float up to a height of about 30 feet above his backyard, where he would enjoy a few hours of flight before coming back down.
When Larry cut the string, he didn’t float lazily up—he shot up! He didn’t level off at 100 feet, nor did he level off at 1,000 feet. He leveled off at 16,000 feet! Eventually, the hanging strings caught in a power line, blacking out a Long Beach neighborhood for 20 minutes. As soon as he hit the ground, he was arrested.
As he was being led away in handcuffs, a television reporter Robert Davies called out to ask, “Why did you do it?” Larry replied, “One can’t just sit around and do nothing!”
Seriously, though ... What are you doing today to make your dreams come true?
